People on Super User don't seem to vote a lot...

500 first posts? wow, am I just not usually here at this time or is something new

Something new.

@Seth - we were excluding locked posts via a p.ParentId In (...), when ParentId is null on questions, so it needed a simple IsNull(p.ParentId, 0) In (...) instead is all. — Nick Craver 42 secs ago

ah something fixed, cool.

Yep :)
Well I burned 40 reviews on Super User... I'm gonna go make dinner. I'll be sorta hanging around though. Ping me if you need something.
I don't know why you would need anything... anyway.

12:51 AM
What is it with people just posting a report of what's wrong instead of actually asking, I dunno, how to fix it, perhaps? ...

1:08 AM
@Zingd if you're still struggling with "SPAM" it's a not tasty meat with an exceedingly long shelf life typically eaten by the poor or during hard times (like during world war 2) when shelf life and cheap were more important than tasty. You get a lot of it in one can if you're just the one person eating it. Just a couple of details to add on there.

@AbrahamVanHelpsing So this spam would be something like a cheap meat or dehydrated meat. Thanks for this explanation. I got very curious about this word, because I just started reading the Python Tutorial, and this word is used a lot of times during the explanations.

Heh. It doesn't mean anything in the python tutorials. It's just a random noun.
It could be caboose or chair for all it matters.

1:46 AM
I am genuinely curious as to where you found such a confusing use of spam and python.
Ah, nvm ... It's one of those inside-jokes in python tutorials ...
What's wrong with Foobar, for god's sake? >.<

It has to do with the naming choice of the language.. The guy who invented named it after "Monty Python and the holy grail"..

@Seth I know about that. I just find the use of a Spam sketch reference a little over-the-top.

I kinda wondered that you didn't know... ;)
@FEichinger Probably is... But it's mighty refreshing to hear "Ni, Knights, spam, eggs" instead of "foo, foobar, etc"

2:15 AM
Thanks for getting that bitcoin edit @seth
This stackoverflow.com/questions/how-to-ask should be linked in the FAQ IMO

@FEichinger heh. I figured that I missed it.
I'm not seeing it linked off of askubuntu.com/faq#howtoask

Q: Has the "First Post" Review section broken?

DoogfarI have seen the "First Post" review section grown from the normal 1-3 posts to a whopping 430+ and the reviews are like two days old? Is this a bug or do they do a massive release of "Re-Reviews" occasionally? Sorry I tagged it as discussion as I saw nothing else that fitted.

@Rinzwind I have seen that. Mark Shuttleworth had proposed providing newer version of softwares only for LTS releases. He didn't say anything about it for interim releases. So, we still wouldn't get newer version of softwares in interim releases (13.04 once it gets released).

Would someone mind taking a look?

yes - was just looking at this... think I'll delete all, except one and add a comment to each of the others to link back to his one answer.

@JenniferWilson that answer i provided is valid for 12.04 and earlier. from 12.10 onwards, they switched from gconf to gsettings. So, it needs to be updated accounting that change. A: command line for hiding and unhiding unity panel

jokerdinoFor 12.10 As Rinzwind mentioned in the comments, Ubuntu has migrated its settings from gconf to gsettings. @jokerdino - so I'm almost done with that setting synchronization over U1 thing

nice! i am interested in your progress. do you hoist it somewhere?

It's sort of integrated into an app I'm working on. When the setting sync part is done, I'll put that part of the directory tree on github with a usage example.

@AmithKK The Arduino proposal is in commit now.

@Seth nice. I have an uno and an ethernet shield to play with...and a raspi maker kit. I need to get a minimal pay app done first though. Reading some Android books, namely this one: amazon.com/Android-Recipes-A-Problem-Solution-Approach/dp/… and I like how it's put together so far.

Oh that's cool.
Thinking about android dev then?

I'm looking at doing all the work in python/C then just changing the user interfaces across platforms

Hmm.
What platforms do you plan to cover?

Lin/Win/Android. iOS and Mac are maybe's if the other three work out since there's a developer tax for those platforms
I'm counting Ubu-phone in Lin (it should work similarly, but I need a VM to play with)

4:08 PM
Oh OK.
Stupid question: I don't need an SSH server to use SSH on right?

openssh?

I think I have openssh..
I have the client...

you would need the keys

Something so simple shouldn't be so hard :S
> Secondly, you need to install an SSH server on your Linux machine. Since you're using Ubuntu, follow this guide on how to install OpenSSH.
Okay, so maybe I do need a server....

server on the server side

Makes sense.
All the help on the web wasn't very clear though.

apt-get it and generate keys. check firewalled ports. done. that's why it's not step by step. it's too straightforward.

Q: Multimonitor in login screen vs. lock screen

ruda.almeidaI have a multiple monitor setup with two screens on Ubuntu 12.04. The login screen uses dual monitor mode, but the lock screen (CTRL + ALT + L) uses only a single monitor and disables the other. Is there a way to change that?

@LuisAlvarado Thx for posting that. But I recommend editing it. People are not creating repositories on dropbox. My understanding (from using dropbox personally) is that it is not possible to do this, because URL's of files on dropbox have random strings of letters as part of them (to prevent unauthorized people from accessing them). Consequently files in someone's personal dropbox space cannot have URL's named properly to be recognized as part of an APT software repository.
The only APT software repository that is hosted on dropbox.com is the repository for the dropbox software itself.

@ruda.almeida Good grief. You already have an off-topic vote...
What up with all the weird off-topic and too localized votes?

@Seth Sorry about that. Where's a better place to post this question?

maybe my bot needs to be fixed? :)

4:42 PM
@Seth I don't know. It is weird though.
@ruda.almeida Your question is fine. It's not off-topic. It's the off-topic vote that is wrong.

@EliahKagan OK

@ruda.almeida Yeah, nothing wrong with your question.
We are having a problem with lots of wrong votes...

@ruda, do you want the login screen on both monitors?
the question seems vague. needs more idiot proofing.

@jokerdino Better fix it soon >:D
@ruda.almeida Much better now. At first I didn't understand the pictures..

so, you want a lock screen on both the monitors.

4:47 PM
@jokerdino Added a very, very specific phrase
Although so many idiots are idot-proof-proof...
4

that would be me, thank you.
:(

whistles Super User already killed off their first posts...

@jokerdino Or a single lock screen that extends to both monitors

BBT

@AmithKK Night

4:52 PM
@ruda.almeida what difference?
also, you might need to add info on graphic card, etc

@jokerdino one dialog box on each screen, vs. a dialog box on a screen and just the wallpaper on the other screen. the 2nd is a bit more like the login screen
@jokerdino How do I find it out? lspci? System settings?

eh, no idea.

@ruda.almeida - that was requested on the improving multi-monitor experience blog post comments. seems like it's a feature-request-bug

lspci | grep VGA

4:56 PM

Unicode input is the insertion of a specific Unicode character on a computer by a user. Unicode characters can be inserted in three ways: from the screen by means of an applet from which one can select the character, by pasting from the clipboard or by certain key sequence on the keyboard. Many systems provide support for Unicode input in some form. A Unicode input system should provide a large repertoire of characters, ideally, all valid Unicode code points. This is different from a keyboard layout which defines keys and their combinations only for a limited number of characters approp...

Its on April 27th the event
