@AmithKK do you see @RolandTaylor around?

@Gui Yeah
appears
@Gui no

Gui
Okay... I mentioned something and it pissed him off... I was wondering if you logged off or just blocked me..

mfg
hey all, I was just wondering if I should have asked my mysql question on here, or unix, or maybe superuser/stackoverflow; any ideas?

Q: MySQL stop/waiting issues; "can't connect ... through socket"

mfgSo first time putting up a LAMP stack on a Bodhi machine (previously experience with WAMP, and LAMP on 10.04); I got Apache going, and a Drupal install begun, then I go to create a new database and when I log in to phpmyadmin ... I get a 'cannot connect error'. Tracing this back, I am running int...

I wasnt really sure where to begin with the diagnostic, but wanted to at least eliminate the ubu/nix side of the equation

Gui
@mfg probably not here unless it has something to do directly with Ubuntu... but if if is an issue with MySQL then there are probably better places to ask...
You might find this of some help though

4:39 PM
that should go on unix/linux or SF, we don't do bodhi here

mfg
yeah, I tried the ubuntuforums answers, to no avail
yeah, I was curious about how ubu remixes are handled
can i put in a migrate request to unix/linux here?
or should i drop on meta

BBT
Good Night

mfg
Righto, I flagged it for review, thanks for the help @gui / @jorge

5:16 PM
So, in just less than 10 minutes using Unity from 12.10 it has completely crashed already twice! Changing locale settings (regional format) BOOM back to login screen. In "Disks", adding a partition on an Extended partition. BOOM back to login screen. WTF? Is this supposed to be this unstable?
(both reproducible)

5:39 PM
hey guys

@mfg probably faster to copy and paste the source onto U/L and then flag it for closure on AU

@Seth, when you edit a link, is it really useful to shorten it to "here"? I'd prefer something like "help.ubuntu.com/community/MATLAB" - but maybe its just me :-)
not trying to "second guess" you of course :-))

@guntbert link?
Ah, I remember.
IMO links in the middle of a sentence or paragraph just make it hard to read.

Q: Should posts be edited to have readable links?

Lewis GoddardWhen reading, i find it infuriating to see links posted http://www.example.com/ rather than Example. Should questions and answers be edited to make links more readable, or is this not really seen as productive?

Why do we have exactly three moderator positions available for the next election? Any reason for it not to be any other number? (askubuntu.com/election/3)

@gertvdijk its just always three.
Are you going to run?

5:53 PM
@Seth Thanks for the reply the other day.
I'll get to fixing the restore button in cursor.
@gertvdijk I dont see any problem in the number being 3.
It is the standard maximum slots available. But it can be lesser depending on the site's need.

@Seth true, but in teaching HTML I've always maintained that "here" is to be avoided in favour of something meaningful - especially when we are thinking of visually handicapped people.

@Seth Yeah, I know it's always three. but why? :P I don't know about participating. I will have a lot less time available for this later this year.
@jokerdino You mean "standard" for SE?

@gertvdijk I am sure I am.
There are instances of 1 and 2 slots but 3 is always the maximum.

@guntbert Well, IMO it's better than a link just "thrown" in there.

I was told if we need more than 3, we would have election in a fairly shorter interval.

5:56 PM
@jokerdino Glad it helped :)

Thanks :)

@Seth Definitely! I'd advocate for something meaningful though - maybe I ask the question about people using screen readers in meta - later.

If you would ask my opinion, I would always prefer a more descriptive link than "here"

aaaahhhggg AGAIN... a user removing his question while I was providing an answer. :( This time I don't have the tab open anymore and not any reference to the user/question anymore...

patting @gertvdijk, "poor boy" :-))

Q: Can I create and maintain a tag to support unity-tweak-tool?

jokerdinoUnity Tweak tool is a configuration tool meant for Ubuntu that I and some of my friends are working on. ^-- this is sad.
For me it is like this all day, while I have plenty of Q&A to edit from the "Active" list.

hey, I don't even have access to the close and reopen queues yet :(
I just reviewed an answer "Just move to Windows, Linux is just awful"

6:37 PM
Why is the bottom 2/3 of my picture greyed out?

I don't see anything..
what browser are you using? Are you using Gravatar or the custom upload?

Firefox. Custom upload.
It's under the Ask Ubuntu General Room.
Not really important.
I am new to AskUbuntu and wondered if there was some policy against pictures other than your face.
:)

hmm, it might be a bug in the new custom upload.
I'd try using Gravatar and seeing if it goes away.
(if you want)

Thanks.

=)

6:41 PM
@Seth Do a google images search on KDE desktop and KDE netbook desktop. And you'll see what I mean.
The desktop he's using is designed for small displays.

@gertvdijk I have. Plus I have installed both.
Its not the same.

@Seth I highly doubt that!

you running kde right now?

yes. I don't have this widget. Only via the netbook package

@gertvdijk Where have you looked? Its a custom setting.

6:43 PM
@Seth in a vm I installed the kde netbook package and instantly got this very same desktop

including the bar at the top?

No. but that's not what the Q is about

Once I finish killing xfce I'll try for myself.
downloading right now.

6:59 PM
that's just the default for search and launch in Kubuntu-Desktop

@Seth what? how do you get there? I see this:
(small window)

@gertvdijk Alt + S
then change "Layout" to "Search and Launch"

@Seth ahhh... that. yeah, just don't do that if you don't like it.
it's not a nice layout for large screens

eh? That's not what is causing the problem.

then I don't get the problem in the first place. you don't have to use a search layout if you don't like it

7:14 PM
@gertvdijk No, no, no. Its not caused my search layout. It's KDE in general.
What graphics card do you have?

what? KDE does not look like that by default. It should look like this after install:
graphics card is totally irrelevant, but I have nvidia with nvidia closed-source drivers.

@gertvdijk Actually, graphics card is important.
@gertvdijk yeah, I had the default for search and launch
I kinda think we're thinking about different things...

the Q was about how spacious Unity is vs KDE, right?

sorta.

then it's not a good thing to compare a netbook interface of KDE with a regular Unity desktop, on a large screen.

7:21 PM
My understanding of it is "In KDE everything is huge, while in Unity it is smaller"
@gertvdijk it's not the netbook interface. Similar, but different.

Oh and Alt+S does not have anything assigned in my Kubuntu install.
@Seth well, I call it the netbook interface as the netbook package just makes this setting the default

oh what ever.
@gertvdijk It was either Alt-D or Alt-S iirc

jrg
7:37 PM

ah, I see.

jrg
so, what it comes down to is this: Will @jokerdino and the rest of the UTT team treat it like dustin kirkland treats the ecryptfs tag?

idk

7:42 PM
since when has the close-for-duplicate dialog changed?

I don't see whats the matter with that tag either @jrg

I just noticed it today
must have been today

ah okay, then I'm not getting crazy :)

oh wow
oops. wrong.

It's slower but I like it
it forces you to read the master question
I've messed up in the past where I just dupe it based on title
which can be bad

jrg
7:45 PM
i've had that happen like, twice.

@jrg yeah, I had that yesterday. 4 others just closed it with the same mistake

that's the problem with the review queue.

while I just must have made a simple copy/paste error

people don't read.

jrg
So, I was trying to add our work printers to a windows 8 box. WHERE IS THE ADVANCED OPTIONS FOR PRINTING?
oh man, the default vagrant boxes don't have byobu installed? cringe
and they aren't on 12.04.1 yet. ew.

8:05 PM
you mean the new ubuntu vagrant images?
byobu should be on there, just not on by default iirc

jrg
no, the the precise32 box that vagrant published.
0
A: Can I create and maintain a tag to support unity-tweak-tool?

jrgAs long as you're going to maintain it, just do it.

@jokerdino

@jrg we're now publishing official vagrant images if you wanna give them a shot

jrg
oh sweet, found the link. thanks.

if they are not awesome lmk
vagrant images will be first class supported from now on
well, not now now, it's in beta
but you get the idea

8:22 PM
How can you be sure you are not duplicating a question?

Anyone else unable to close vote when the dupe has no answer?

@JohnRambo you just look around on the site. Under tags you might use, etc.
don't worry too much if you can't find it and someone else does though.

8:40 PM
@TomBrossman let me check
@TomBrossman what's the original question?
err, the one you think is the dupe I mean

@JorgeCastro Hmm, I closed it in review. I'll try to find it again

oh ok
I guess I can't check then, heh

Q: Are we doing anything differently with duplicates when there is no answer?

Tom BrossmanIn review, I'm seeing a couple subtle changes. First, the wording on the first popup changed to 'This question has been asked before and already has an answer.'(emphasis mine) The next dialogue is 'Where has this question been asked and answered?' I never give any consideration to whether a...

@JorgeCastro When I say I closed it in review, I mean I closed the browser window. The question remains open with no close-votes.

hmm interesting
I'll pay attention when I review

8:49 PM
Hopefully just a bug or I'm doing something wrong?

I can see why they wouldn't want duplicates to unanswered questions
so who knows
but from my perspective, piling all the people with the same unanswered question in the same boat is better
2

Yes, either the question is a dupe or it isn't. An answer is nice but is a separate issue. I just tried the review again and same thing. It looks like it shows 4 close votes, but my button is greyed-out. Strange. Tried in Firefox & Chrome, same thing.

9:06 PM
the queue is getting busier and busier
I used to be able to do the queue and then some
now I can barely do the queue with one day's votes

9:19 PM
@JorgeCastro yes indeed. we need more close votes per day! it's a huge amount of those closeable questions and we only have a few users being actual janitors here.

once the review landed our slide in accept rate stopped
so I think the "rate" of closing/reviewing is spot on
but the problem is this huge backlog

9:44 PM
@JorgeCastro Is review new then? I haven't seen this site without it

I want to say about 6 months?
before review
we did everything by hand
so if you wanted to close a question, you had to find people
2

ah okay. I'm a newbie here then. :)

oli even made a custom app to help with it: cleanup.thepcspy.com
so like, if you wanted to close a question
and it wasn't on the front page
you literally had to find other high rep users

good grief.

now it's easy, I know if I find a closeable question I can just stick it in the queue and the community will do the right thing

9:47 PM
@JorgeCastro Do you mean the new review system is about 6 months old?

Q: Ask Ubuntu Review Tasks (beta)

MitchI think that the new Review Tasks is an excellent idea to clean the system of duplicates, dead questions, low quality, etc. I have noticed while reviewing, that some answers have already been recommended for deletion by other users, but are still showing up. Is there a reason for that, because ...

so at one point we were like absolutely the worst in the network for accept rate
then we did a huge cleanup

Before that, there was another review system, but it was less powerful and not very good at getting questions closed.

which got us back into the high 80's
so what would happen is we'd stay in the high 80's or low 90's
then a new ubuntu came out and we got crushed
and we would spend all cycle to get back

but with the new system when a question is terrible it's relatively easy to close
so since ... I wanna say 12.04 or 12.10, maintaining has been pretty easy
but before then
we would lose at least a percentage point every few weeks on the accept rate of questions because there was just no way to coordinate closing
so we had like, a specific chat channel for them and do clean up weeks

9:50 PM
@jrg: If you can see a green color on the screen, that means the DisplayLink module has detected the device and initialized it.
Actually integrating it into the X server is something else.

but now it's relatively easy, if I flag something and I hit the queue I know by the time I go to bed and wake up it'll be resolved

Last time I tried, I had to switch the entire desktop to 16-bit color and turn on Xinerama. (And if I remember correctly, that disabled hardware acceleration or something.)

@gertvdijk the problem now is, all the old questions sit there instead of being resolved quickly, which is why I did using the datasets to find old easy low hanging fruit

@JorgeCastro okay :)

meta.askubuntu.com/a/1341/235 has some real easy ones
but I always run out of votes, heh
so I try to do it towards the end of the day

9:55 PM
there are those as well, the old no votes/answers

I am convinced that if we ran an old school "Clean up week" with the review queue that it would be awesome

with merchandise and everything, would be awesome.

look!
it has an accepted answer!

emm... I'd ask on MSO then.

it does have an answer in this case... bug!

yes
