Jin
12:38 AM
hi, anyone here?

1 hour later…
1:47 AM
@Jin hi! I'm here.

Jin
1:58 AM
@JorgeCastro hey jorge
I'm creating an ad banner for askubuntu, very much like the one you posted.

man, these ads are going to be great

Jin
but i know nothing about ubuntu... is there a worthy opensource ubuntu project/game you think is suitable for the ad?

well, right now the focus is on unity
so if you just want to replace the one we whipped up with that, that would be swell
also, we have a community event coming up if you want to make an ad for that instead

Jin
no i think the idea is to have multiple ones.

Jin
2:00 AM
so people can vote on it.

an appdeveloper week one would be great
let me dig some more up

Jin
i'm not suggesting whatever I create will be THE ONE. i'm just seeding that thread.

/me nods
I have a tons of things we're doing, let me dig them up
there's another event "Ubuntu Global Jam"

Jin
when does the event expire?
ah that's coming up soon. i wonder what we should do about time sensitive ads...
i think jeff prefers something that's a bit more permanent. like the promotion of a project, product etc.

Jin
2:04 AM
but you feel free to post an ad for the event though.
i think more ads, the better.

yeah, I've already sent a few mails to people since the thread went up
I can ask around tomorrow to get people started

Jin
ok. i'm only making an ad to seed the thread. but if we get more entries tomorrow then i don't have to do it :)

that one can be one

Jin
ok.

banshee would be great too, as it's more of an end-user app
I'm just going through the ones we ship by default. :)
@Jin oooh, this one: yorba.org/shotwell
that one is awesome because I convinced the authors to follow the tag on AU.
So I think they would really get a kick out of that

Jin
2:09 AM
nice. so that's a ubuntu specific software?

well, other linuxes ship it but we feature it and ship it by default

Jin
so ubuntu users have it by default?

yep
they have shotwell, gwibber, and banshee by default

Jin
hmm then why advertise it if everyone has it?

well, I was thinking for getting contributors, something like "hack on shotwell"
but that's a good point

Jin
2:11 AM
wouldn't it be like advertising wordpad for windows users?

heh yeah

Jin
i think banshee.fm looks good.
i'll do that.

k, I should have more traction from other people by tomorrow

Jin
btw when i'm on wiki.ubuntu.com i think i'm on askubuntu because of the UI. I keep looking for the questions link..

I never get confused because the wiki is so slow compared to AU. :)

Jin
2:13 AM
Mat did a good job designing AU.

I moved a few pages from the wiki to AU because we were getting sick of it
17
Q: Keyboard shortcuts in Unity?

htorqueIn Compiz-based Unity, are there any pre-defined keyboard shortcuts, e.g. to open the dash or unhide the launcher?

for example the guys just update this page now instead of having it on the wiki
and I just made a forward from the wiki to AU

Jin
hmm i should restyle the <kbd> for AU site..
they don't look too good now.

yeah some of us want the apple.se ones
but some people like the old school ones
but if you were to update them I won't tell anyone. whistles

Jin
well i won't format it to look like Apple's, but i think it can use some polish.

that would be swell

Jin
2:16 AM
it's great more people use css3 capable browsers now. so I can do a bit more, especially for a techie site.

these look a little too much like 1980 IBM keyboard keys

Jin
i'll add coffee gunk on them to look them even more retro..

@Jin ok packing up from the coffee shop, I'll get the word out tomorrow about the ads.
cheers!

Jin
thanks!

5 hours later…
6:53 AM
I asked a question, maybe you guys can help

Q: Flasp player stops working in Firefox

AlinFirst of all please be merciful as I am a 2 days ubuntu user. I've only used Windows OSs before. Hardware configuration -Quad Core Q6600 CPU -4 GB RAM -Geforce 8800GT 512 MB RAM -Seagate 320GB Harddisk I installed ubuntu x64 and everything went smooth. I had Adoble flash pla...

@Alin this is Ubuntu 10.10 - 64bit, yes?
It's always very helpful to include your version of ubuntu. If you're not sure, you can go to System → About Ubuntu

7:18 AM
Good morning all

morning takkat :)

1 hour later…
8:25 AM
morning all

morning @htorque

8:41 AM
morning

@OctavianDamiean morning

morning @OctavianDamiean

9:01 AM
I'm definitely not a designer...
any opinions? (preferably criticism)

it isn't bad but you lack white dots

I do indeed, just don't know how to make the white dots look nice with the huge text

Maybe through in a gradient or texture in there, instead of the flat uniform orange?

look at the Ask a question button

ono :O

9:04 AM
@YiJiang gradients are bad ... texture with dots is good

I pressed ctrl+Z a bunch of times, now it's gone :O

@StefanoPalazzo oh lol

@OctavianDamiean Subtle, that's the key

@YiJiang yea well the point is Ubuntu prefers flat colors
but a diagonal stripes pattern like the Ubuntu header has is nice too

with dots, still doesn't look right to me

9:07 AM
@StefanoPalazzo No no no, that doesn't look good at all

oh no
more

@StefanoPalazzo :O

I'm close to giving up (: I should stick to code

here is a good resource for design regarding Ubuntu design.canonical.com

@StefanoPalazzo You're working with GIMP?

9:08 AM
@StefanoPalazzo back to the drawing board, now!

@YiJiang yes
Anyone know how to give attribution when I use someone else's work for an Ad?

@StefanoPalazzo I suggest in the EXIF, and in the page where the ad is featured.

@StefanoPalazzo depends on where and how you'll use it

9:37 AM
anyone knows a good python exif library?
requirement: It should work

@ManishSinha that requirement is awesome :D

Has anyone here used IntelliJ CE ?

@KaustubhP yes. was a big PITA for me

@OctavianDamiean THank god, and I thought I was inept :p

@ManishSinha doesn't PIL do exif?
> exifdata = im._getexif()
where im is an Image()

9:52 AM
@OctavianDamiean that is required as most of the libraries dont wory
@StefanoPalazzo sadly I had tried the exif library.. didnt work
I heard libexiv2 is the new library for this work
but python-libexixv2 as usual is broken for images.. :(

As usual? this sounds very strange

@OctavianDamiean Spent the last 3 hours configuring IJ CE.
to work with scala.

18
Q: Exif manipulation library for python

oo_olo_ooI'm looking for good exif (Exchangeable image file format) manipulation library for python. I prefer flexibility (e.g., ability to retrieve providers' proprietary tags) than processing speed. What would you suggest?

I presume you've seen this?

I guess I should stick with eclipse. But Scala content assist sucks b4lls. @OctavianDamiean

@StefanoPalazzo Will try it out when I go back home. I think I had checked it
I wanted it since novacut is written in python

9:56 AM
@KaustubhP don't know about Scala but I know that Android development on IntelliJ is a PITA ...
I'll never try it again

If that is the state with Android, a language like Scala is going to be PITAx2!

use Eclipse :P
/me hides

this seems to be the best I can come up with

@StefanoPalazzo fragmentation isnt good. keep the complete BG, make "Qucikly" and the box white.
and "show me how in orange" or another color that suits it.

Not sure I understand what you mean :)

10:04 AM
@StefanoPalazzo white patches dont look good.

@KaustubhP Agreed

so keep the complete background, w/o patches. change the color of "Quickly" to White. Change color of orange "show me" button to anyother.
and the text inside the button to white.

which background should I use, the orange one with white dots?

the on that is current. the one with the code script.
In fact this one also looks good:
just add a "show me how" button to it.
so it reads:
**QUICKLY**

Start deve.. apps today

[show me how]

mh. the button is kind of difficult. It's either grey, which doesn't suit the colours at all, or the orange colour from the last image

Oli
10:14 AM
How on earth does Imgur sustain itself? Surely they're using terabytes of data per month and must have similar storage demands... And they seem to ask for nothing in return.

@StefanoPalazzo @KaustubhP what is this Quickly book?
I know about Quickly
but who is writing this book?

Hi gang! :P

@ManishSinha there is an Ubuntu developers manual in the works

I've been thinking, how is xubuntu 11.X going to be? is unity installed there or is there going to be the usual desktop?

Oli
Just noticed their "pro" account. Still doesn't seem like a business plan to me.

10:18 AM
@StefanoPalazzo oh yeah. I know Rick Spencer was working on it
but never knew it would be released as a book like this

Because I've been using unity in 10.04 netbook and it was great, but in 10.10 netbook it sucked, and now I just want a normal dekstop, so is there going to be a normal desktop realease??? (of ubuntu)!

I thought it would be written and then posted in developer.ubuntu.com

@ManishSinha im sorry, i ddnt get you.

@KaustubhP I was asking about this book cover
is this going to be a book kind of thing
or hosted at developer.ubuntu.com?

@ManishSinha the one @StefanoPalazzo is making?

Oli
10:19 AM
@Alvar Unity is still a Gnome-based application. AFAIK it wouldn't work straight off on a XFCE desktop.

I dont know :)

or both?

@Alvar Xubuntu will not use unity

@StefanoPalazzo cool :D

Just he was asking for suggestions! Theres something about people asking suggestions that gets me :D

10:20 AM
@KaustubhP never knew @StefanoPalazzo is making one

I'm not :D

can you choose which unity version you want to use? beacuse I LOVED the one in 10.04

@Alvar you will still have an option of using old gnome-panel

@ManishSinha ok! :D

in login screen

10:21 AM
@ManishSinha I'm just playing around, thinking about designing an Advert to appear on AskUbuntu.com

choose "Ubuntu Classic"
instead of "Ubuntu Desktop"

this has nothing to do with the developer manual

@ManishSinha aha, but can you choose when you install it? so you don't get software you don't want?

@Alvar you can remove unity
but dont worry
its size is very small
@StefanoPalazzo wow. great. Go ahead :)

@ManishSinha hehe, well we'll see...

10:22 AM
@Alvar and 10.10's Unity sucked
because it used Mutter as WM which was not so mature that time

I'm confused @Alvar @ManishSinha, If you install Xubuntu, you will have XFCE and that's it, the Unity desktop won't be installed

@ManishSinha It was mor elike a joke...

newer 11.04 Unity used Compiz
@StefanoPalazzo yeah does XUbuntu has its own shell?

@ManishSinha I first thought a microsfot guy had been developling the 10.10 unity..

@Alvar lol

10:23 AM
@ManishSinha so waht is natty going to use? :D

Xubuntu uses the XFCE desktop environment, which is a "shell" and some apps

@Alvar Unity
I tried Unity from Natty ALpha 3

@ManishSinha A apple fan, @octavian can agree on that :D

in Virtualbox

cool

10:24 AM
@Alvar in VB it is fast

so? is it like 10.04?

when you say natty, you can mean Ubuntu 11.04, which uses Unity by default, or Kubuntu, which uses KDE instead of Unity, or Xubuntu, which uses XFCE, I hope I'm not doing too bad of a job of explaining this, hehe (:

In virtualbox I gave it 768MB RAM limit

@ManishSinha hmmm, then i might just go with that instead of an desktop ;)

10:25 AM
it performed faster than gnome-shell

@ManishSinha cooooooooooooooool :P

but it still has rough edges
normal thing

@ManishSinha well nothing is really perfect...

the dev started in oct mid

2010?

10:26 AM
@Alvar so in 4-5 months we have so many features
yes
oct 2010

wow, that is amazing... and a bit scary...
around my birthday then..
was it the 14?

oct 14? :D

@StefanoPalazzo what is the shell used by XFCE. KDE uses plasma . Right?

xfwm afaik

10:33 AM
Something like that, I don't remember. But it's part of XFCE in any case
whereas Unity uses a bunch of things from gnome, the Unity shell, the nux toolkit, and so on.
the term Shell isn't very well defined, it means something like "applications that help you move about through your data and things, integrated into the desktop"

yay, i broke the negative streak:
:D

@StefanoPalazzo defining a shell is the toughest thing
if anyone asks me what is Unity
i say shell, I get confused when they ask "What is a shell"
pretty tough to explain

@htorque lol, i dreamt last night, that I reached 2000 rep. I edited Mark Shuttleworth's answer. He then proceed by disabling all the Ubuntus i touched, something like the midas touch. Worst dream ever.

technically speaking, Unity is a desktop-awesomiser, It increases the awesomeness of your desktop, which is proportional to the amount of Unity you have
(not to scale)

@StefanoPalazzo LOL
only if that graph represented what you just said :)

10:48 AM
corrected :)

@StefanoPalazzo heh

so what is the best shell we have right now? for gnome?

I made sure the graph shows that even without unity, your desktop is still fairly awesome

gnome-shell, unity or gnome-panel ?

gnome-panel
most mature project

10:49 AM
gnome-panel isn't really a shell

yeah

gnome-panel+metacity :P

I know, but it fits in the same category of unity or gs
for end users that is what they see

@htorque to be frank my work on development like applets and integration with gnome-panel was nightmarish
there i think I just created a new term - nightmarish :P

10:51 AM
What's the best T-Shirt to wear?
I mean, In every case, for everyone all the time :P

any t-shirt with a justin bieber snap in front suffices

a "don't hassel the hoff" shirt :P

@StefanoPalazzo unless you wanna be lynched :P

@Alaukik I had to reject your edit-suggestion, we have "sort of" a standard of linking to packages.ubuntu.com in these apt-links. See meta.askubuntu.com/questions/548/…

@Alvar: I said I'd let you know:

11:01 AM
@StefanoPalazzo something with Ubuntu

@OctavianDamiean not when you're applying for an internship at Microsoft :P

@StefanoPalazzo even then
just to show them that they suck :D

there was a Microsoft security researcher the last chaos communication congress, said he's using ubuntu if he can
got booed for it as well, for some reason :P
(they are old-school gentoo emacs people at ccc), all in good humour of course

have you seen datenwolf vs. lennart? :D

of course!
that was just brilliant theatre :D Nerd-tastic

11:05 AM
that's why you should prepare a talk :D

I would've expected more of an upstanding response from a scientist though, to be brutally frank

oh god I hate software prototyping ... my code looks just ugly when I'm in a hurry

@oKtosiTe but this is wi-fi on my asus 1201n netbook

awesome! :D

now I got ping 12 ms! ;D
best result today! :D everybody went to class :D
@htorque why did you blur the pic?

11:20 AM
cause i'm a big mystery
:D

lol

@htorque right....

your ISP would sue you for posting these results :D

i should sue my ISP for getting these results

hha only in the us! :D
true
The funny thing about my school is that their computers are very old pc:s and they can't use more than 1-3 mbit/s then that the house is wired with 100mbit/s wires is just awesome!!
And they have wifif that supports it, :D
btw, my school is the poorest in the whole community, but the internet is the best LOL

11:39 AM
is there a limit in google chrome on how many tabs you can have open?
does this make a difference on the performance?

@Alvar each tab is a new process, so technically the laws that apply to opening new applications are the same that apply to opening new tabs.

@KaustubhP ok...

12:12 PM
@Alvar actually not really. You can really sue your ISP if you don't get what you pay for. ;)
after all both parties signed a contract

Oli
@OctavianDamiean I don't think there's an ISP on the planet that doesn't cover themselves on advertised speeds by putting in an "up to x Mbps" where they can clearly deliver anything below x

@Oli oh well of course they do but they hate bad press and still don't like getting sued ;)
I know that because I have worked at one of Austrias biggest ISPs a few years ago

1:11 PM
@htorque if you happen to attend the UDS please with this suit :D

1:32 PM
ah I'm just loving it ... fix one bug and introduce two new ones that is exactly the way it should work ...

1:50 PM
↑ look, I'm advertising an advert :P

Awesome!

@StefanoPalazzo nice
@StefanoPalazzo may I help you with it this evening? I mean I'd like to show you what I meant with the dots if you don't mind.

Q: How I can send e-mail with my "@ ubuntu.com" in Evolution?

user12135When I send an e-mail with Evolution to anyone, reads, from mypopmail@noubuntu.com reply to mymail@ubuntu.com I want to look from mymail@ubuntu.com reply to mymail@ubuntu.com How I can change this?

@OctavianDamiean yes of course! I was about to ask for some help :)

just to make sure he doesn't really mean a real @ubuntu.com mail address right?

heh, I was just thinking, too bad that an Ubuntu member doesn't care to create an account on AU

2:00 PM
Any natty devs here?

well my edit should be valid anyway as this is the best example of where one should apply abstraction
@Madscientist I'm not a Natty developer but whats up?

What can I do if compiz crashes.I usually do unity --replace but

@OctavianDamiean It sort of implies control over the domain, but since you've answered it correctly that doesn't matter :)

i cant alt tab if it crashes,so if am not in terminal I screwed
.
Anyidea?

@Madscientist that is pretty much all you can do as far as I know
@Madscientist Alt + F2 and restart it from there

2:03 PM
you can do the replace thing on a tty

alt f2 doesnt work.
wait or does it?
Its supposed to enable the dash in some special way right? doesnt work for me

@Madscientist sorry I meant Ctrl + Alt + F2
and then this
23 hours ago, by htorque
@YiJiang should be DISPLAY=:0.0 compiz --replace

17
Q: Keyboard shortcuts in Unity?

htorqueIn Compiz-based Unity, are there any pre-defined keyboard shortcuts, e.g. to open the dash or unhide the launcher?

@Madscientist you can do export DISPLAY=:0.0 and then compiz --replace
ah too slow

in a tty right?
Thanx.

2:06 PM
yeah this is on a tty, i.e. after pressing Ctrl + Alt +F1...6

@Madscientist yup

That'll save me a LOT of time.

likes the new Chromium logo

/me always wondered the difference between Chrome and Chromium

is anyone in here that took any LPIC exam?

2:09 PM
@Madscientist alt-f2 doesn't work
it'll work on thursday ish
I put that note in the answer

Today is thursday in my time zone.So its next week or...

@Madscientist Google Chrome is based on the open source Chromium

@OctavianDamiean how did do the "like " thing.

you mean italic text?

the pencil in front

2:12 PM
just wrap your text inside of either underscores or asterisks

@Madscientist sometime in the next 24 horus
oh yeah, today is thursday, how about that

_ is an underscore and * is an asterisk; just if you wonder what I'm talking about ;)

@JorgeCastro Look at the luck.
I've been trying to talk to you for a long time,and the chance i get,i have to leave.
_ is not that much of a noob _
* he is

@Madscientist given that fact that @JorgeCastro is addicted to AskUbuntu chances are high that you can catch him almost every day in here ;)

I tried at irc. wanted to start with bitesize.
Anyway,thanx for the help. I got to go now. AFK.

2:17 PM
@Madscientist try that again without as space in between the underscore and the preceding and the succeeding text
today is a good day ... I'm in a help-ish mood :D

A: Trying Network Manager's replacement ConnMan

OliYou're thinking of ConnMan. For those that don't know, it was created by Intel and Nokia for Moblin and then Meego. My understanding was it provides slightly fewer options and at slightly better performance. However, I can't see any plans for Ubuntu to replace Network Manager with it. There's an...

@Oli not thread. Question. :)

2:45 PM
I am SO digging the new OOS ads on the side

I know
@MarcoCeppi I wanted to do some ads for some community events like the global jam, release parties, etc. but Jin thinks that Jeff wants to keep them software related. Can you ask for some clarification at the next mod meeting?
I have to coordinate community events anyway so it's no problem for me to curate them, etc.

@JorgeCastro Yeah, I'll ask today around 11 AM

@JorgeCastro uh interesting. The questions text states cool events or conferences.

oh it does?

and of course that too anything else your community would genuinely be interested in

2:50 PM
oh, well in that case!

yea
I was already wondering why there is no UDS ad yet

Ahhhh! The chat CSS died

@StefanoPalazzo I'll ping you in a few minutes when I'm at home so we can get that Quickly ad dotified :D

@OctavianDamiean I suck at making them
if someone were to make a UDS ad that would be awesome

@JorgeCastro what dots or ads?
it should be possible to get Gimp to create them automatically, I'll have to take a look
@JorgeCastro I'll give it a try. Lets see if I can come up with something clean and nice :)

2:59 PM
Oh man, this is bad news for me
