o/ @Fabby

o/
Don't ping me to say hi, please?
:P
Totally off-topic

@Fabby Voted

TY

@Fabby death by Hammer confirmed.

:D

8:15 PM
@chili555 Ethernet question: askubuntu.com/questions/842146/…

mac. Didn't read any further.

Yo Fabby!

:)
Wie geht es dir?
My German is coming back: the other day I had someone say that for someone who hasn't spoken German for a long time, it's pretty good!

Oh, I'm fine.
Nice job.
Speaking much English with people from all over the world. Indians, Serbians, Croatians, etc.

:)
Good for you! Learning a lot? (Except English)

8:24 PM
One from Egypt...
Dunno, too many people :D
Yeah, I do.

Any science? Computer skills?

Building web apps (backend) with Java.

:O Cool!

So no science, just code.

Java is good for that kind of stuff.
What's the OS of the backend?

8:26 PM
Still training, but I was allowed to join a real customer project this week and write my first "real" lines of code.
We're developing on Windows, but they also have some Unix servers somewhere, so not sure where it will run in production.

Thoughts?

Q: Changing canonical questions

Android DevSo I think we can all agree that this has become a canonical question: How to install Android Studio on Ubuntu? I would like to create my own, better version. If I were to do so, would the community be okay with changing which question we use for dupes of installing Android Studio? Here's wh...

It'll probably be CentOS, or Debian if you're lucky!

However, as my desktop OS is Windows, I've put the SysAdmin's phone number on speed dial. :D

:D :D :D

They even have some Ubuntu servers IIRC.

8:29 PM
I'm not using my professional laptop to connect here! (also Windows)

Dunno, maybe I'll be able to get my hands at them once when I may train as sysadmin once within the next years.
Oh, and I'm at home now, so that's my private notebook, of course.

:) I'm also home... I work from home! ;)
Need to give some science advice. BRB

Yo Launchpad. Ever heard of ignoring things you don't understand???

8:35 PM
:D

Git import is so fragile.

yessssssssss my Bluetooth works

Ugh, I had trouble with Git in the office today.
Hopefully I can find someone to help me fix it tomorrow.

@AndroidDev I'm on it, my friend!

8:37 PM
@AndroidDev moved to comments

@ThomasWard TY

@AndroidDev I think I'll try to write an answer, but it will just be my opinion...

@Zacharee1 It's a dupe

8:52 PM
Upgraded my Mac Mini to Sierra and it decided (without asking me) that it would go to sleep after a few minutes, disconnecting it from the CI server.
Nice. Thanks, Apple.

9:07 PM
hey @Rinzwind, I'm in the lead :D
so i had the most wonderful dream last night.
Preformatted messages posted in chat had a nice orange tint behind them.

damn now there's actually a meta post about how clueless I am

linky?

well now it's immortalized
i thought the rule was to never touch commands, no matter how wrong they seem?

o.O surely not

9:13 PM
that might just be a rule i made up, but i could have sworn that was somewhere?
like as in, unless you're 1000% certain without a doubt that the command is completely wrong and you know exactly what was intended, you don't touch it.

there would be people all over Ubuntuland in big trouble if @edwinksl wasn't around to edit the fatal typos out of commands in my answers...

@KazWolfe fixing is okay (if it does not mean substantial changes). If the edit is major, it should be a comment instead.

dude, he put ar instead of tar. I was 100% sure it was wrong, but I was WRONG

(That's what I believe is the rule, at least)

well ar vs tar is by no means a major edit, but it's really bloody significant.
like i can see doing rm -rf ~/ tmp and fixing it to rm -rf ~/tmp but that's sorta... really really bad if done otherwise.
i wonder if those tech support scammers are hiring.
because then i can go do a long con and actually offer legit help to people.

9:21 PM
Anyway, good night. It's late enough again.

9:34 PM
@ThomasWard all, including meta and unix site. I'm suspecting recent update to chrome either briked something, or its my side having issues. I do have large text enabled from accessibility options in my phone, but it was working without issues in the past.

@Serg I can't replicate on any android device, even a 4-inch WVGA emulation
just sayin :P

i think I'll remove the report for now. I think it's chrome issue and not site specifically

leave it
in case someone else has the issue
if they can't reproduce it'll status-norepro eventually

k
also, holly balls ,i was preparing for this exam and still feel like I got my butt kicked
gosh i don't wanna go to 3rd lecture

@Zanna Double-check when editing the posts of giants like @NathanOsman...
(or ping them in chat first)
;)

9:41 PM
@Fabby Weird, that didn't ping me...

well, I looked two places today, one is a mixed frat in a good location, cheap, BUT has no garage for my motorcycle. The other is the same price I pay here, has a place for my bike, all cool, except I might have to deal with some jealous boyfriend because a girl about my age lives there

@ThomasWard: I disagree that you left the dumb answer in and took the balanced one out. askubuntu.com/q/842065/344926

@Fabby he was here in chat :)

try again @NathanOsman ...
It's the three dots
that one should have pinged you.

It did.

9:43 PM
@Fabby flags queue handling, not active squishing of everything in a question.

The dots threw it off, I guess.

and this does not? @NathanOsman...

@Fabby handle each answer as a 'separate thing' :P

Nope. No ping.

(I have a lot of different things on my radar)

9:44 PM
I understand. Now undo what you did! :P

I'll keep it as is, neither are answers.

Damn power.

@Zanna as long as the edits were done in good faith, i don't see any problems. people (in this case, you and rinzwind) will occasionally make mistakes, but we can correct them easily. i am not sure why there is a fuss about this.

'cause i just messed with the other one too, @Fabby
F5 is your friend
brb food run

@edwinksl fuss? no fuss :) I'm just amused by @Rinzwind immortalising an embarrassing cock-up hahaha
2

9:49 PM
@ThomasWard Hah! well, in that case: new balanced answer (Now, how do I write-protect an answer from the mod's hammer again???)
@Zanna Starred!

@Zanna i was referring to kaz questioning your well-intentioned but wrong edit

@edwinksl oh I see, in that case, I agree :)
thanks for your support :)
<3
@Fabby hahaha who knew that one little t would cause so much trouble for me?

;)
Weird... I've posted in chat that I've posted a new answer and I didn't get any upvotes in the last 10 seconds...
The public has indeed changed... :D

gosh . . . should ditch 3rd lecture and go home ?
I'd love to get my sleep back

If you go to sleep when you go home: yes.

9:59 PM
or maybe i can go to library and code some C. or do something with indicators

(Shall I ask you to be banned from chat for 24h again?)
:D

meh, it won't help

:D :D :D

HOLY WOLVES

Smoke! BRB.

10:00 PM
APPLE IS DOING SOMETHING RIGHT! :O

@KazWolfe What?
@KazWolfe NO! Apple hasn't done anything right since the good Steve left the company!!!

Apple is finally killing Vim!

dafuq ?
Apple how dare you !

New MacBook won't have physical ESC key. Or any F keys for that matter.

@KazWolfe Apple uses Vim?
@KazWolfe That is so utterly stupid

10:01 PM
somebody resurect Steve Jobs, those idiots are fscking shz up

No, it's "courageous"

oh right, sorry

Apple has both nano and vim

@Serg No, someone should get Steve Wozniak back!

Apple has useful stuff?

10:02 PM
And now vim is dead. yay!

well, I guess not anymore...

Long live nano!
(Until Apple kills off the Ctrl key)

@Fabby oh, he's still alive...

nano isn't as powerful, end of story

@KazWolfe next year

10:03 PM
seriously, rip Vim touch typing on Mac tho.

The MacBook in 2018 will just be a power button

vim can be used to touch too
There's versions for Android

not the same touch typing.

lol

@Zacharee1 yes he is:
Stephen (or Stephan) Gary "Steve" Wozniak (/ˈwɒzniæk/, born August 11, 1950), nicknamed "Woz", is an American inventor, electronics engineer, programmer, and technology entrepreneur who co-founded Apple Inc. He is known as a pioneer of the personal computer revolution of the 1970s and 1980s, along with Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. Wozniak single-handedly developed the 1976 Apple I, which was the computer that launched Apple. He primarily designed the 1977 Apple II, while Jobs oversaw the development of its unusual case and Rod Holt developed the unique power supply. == Early life == Steve Wozniak...

10:04 PM
@Fabby that's what I said. I was surprised

Apple is going to sell a USB-C "F-key Dock" for $79.99

Why were you surprised he's still alive?

And then you choose between function keys or charging your computer every 30 minutes.

Bill Gates is worth $82b?????!

Or you can buy a splitter for $84.99

10:04 PM
@Fabby everyone's been dying lately
@KazWolfe lol

@KazWolfe Starred!

sigh . . . what kind of crack are Apple people on ?

@Serg Probably crack snorted through thousand-dollar bills.

@Serg They grind up old iPhones and snort them.
For that oh-so-coveted Lithium-ion high

That would be deadly.

10:06 PM
combination of those two probably ^

They specifically snort the lockdowned bootloader chips.
Because that causes their brains to go into "lockdown everything" mode

@Fabby And you think Apple isn't dying?

Apple's new motto: "No ESC from our product ecosystem!"

HUEHUEHUE

Soon, no Apple product will work unless you have the entire product line on your Apple account.
Meaning, you need an iPhone, iWatch, iMac, MacBook Pro, Apple TV, and everything else just for one device to work.

10:07 PM
if this graph is true, iPhones sell strangely well in Q1 statista.com/statistics/263401/…

looks like the average is going down a bit though

@Fabby Best. Ad. Campaign. Ever.

I think I know exactly how @KazWolfe will use his new blender

I don't support BlendTec.

10:09 PM
gasp

Their EEPROM controllers aren't running Libre code.

wut
you don't want to buy a blender because it's closed source?

I prefer the FOSS BlendPi system, because it's fully open source in both hardware and software.

...

Oh, sorry.
GNU/BlendPi

10:10 PM
....

The downside is the power cord only plugs into open-source outlets.
So I had to rewire my entire house.
But GNU/PowerOutlet things mark the power source as "tainted" if the wiring isn't GNU/Copper.

are we having fun?

SMOKE!

So I had to rewire my entire house.

@Fabby nooooooooo

10:12 PM
smoking right meow

@Serg noooooooo

And then GNU/Copper didn't deliver power correctly because my power company didn't provide GNU/Electricity, so there was a lot of loss.

@KazWolfe GNU/shutyofaec

Therefore, I had to get GNU/SolarPanel product and hook them up to my FOSS GNU/Inverter and GNU/BatteryPack to get everything working right.

@Zacharee1 if i pass this damn exam, I'll quit, i swear

10:13 PM
@Serg I feel like you'd be more likely to pass the exam if you quit

It turns out, though that my electric water heater doesn't accept GNU/Power, so I needed to get a GNU/WaterHeater.
But because GNU/WaterHeater only accepts open-source pipes, i had to redo all of my house's plumbing with GNU/Pipe and GNU/Faucet.

i don't have my book so can't prep for quiz in next lecture anyway . . .
i should just go home and sleep

@Serg You should try vaping at least. It's not exactly safe (don't use flavors, they aren't approved for breathing, just eating), but it's way safer than traditional smoking

Then GNU/BlendPi updated and then it complained that I didn't have a GNU/House, and I couldn't run at full RPM to protect me.
So I had to build a completely new GNU/House, which means I needed a GNU/Well installed too.

@KazWolfe this sounds like some sort of Minecraft modpack
But the GNU/well was incompatible with the ground water

10:15 PM
@Zacharee1 I've a friend/coworker who offered me try out some of the vape stuff at her shop

so you blew up Earth and got a GNU/Earth

But GNU/House requires a gnu to be present.
But it has to be a free and open source GNU/Gnu. So I had to compile one of those because GNU/Apt doesn't have a package.

@Serg seriously, try it.
@KazWolfe ewww

But now, I have a GNU/Life.

@KazWolfe I think you mean NO/life

10:16 PM
And this is why I don't call it GNU/Linux.

good night

Also I opened a bug with the GNU/Window project a long time ago because there's a draft, and it's still in the "New" state.

shutdown /s /t 1

anybody wanna edit my answer ? i am error prone on mobile

How much are you paying?

10:20 PM
3 unicorns per edit

sorry, we only take candy corns

dangit. . . .how about weed ? there's plenty of it in CO

Can't we all just be friends, stop arguing, and agree that Internet Explorer has been, is, and will forever be the best browser?
@Serg it's hardball illegal in PA
even medically

IE ? best browser ? hold me someone, imma die laughing

@Serg The problem with IE wasn't so much the browser itself but the lengthy time between releases.
IE6 truly was the best browser on the market. In 2001.

10:23 PM
@NathanOsman Yeah, and IE11 was the best browser on the market, if it was 2001

The problem is that IE7 took like 6 years to come along.

o_O
also how IE insisted on ActiveX or whatever
and how IE needs to have separate stylesheets and HTML for everything

IE had Flash.
But we all know the problems with Flash.

The problem with Flash is Flash
3

@Zacharee1 IE6 was more standards-compliant than its competitors at the time of release.

10:25 PM
Just like the problem with Windows is Windows
@NathanOsman and it stayed compliant, to those same standards :D

@Zacharee1 See? The problem was the release cycle, not the browser.

So what you're saying is that the new versions are really just rebranded IE6?

Flash Sucks™

@Zacharee1 No, we have Edge now.

Thank God for HTML5
@NathanOsman Edgy

10:26 PM
Sorry I have been busy building Windows 10 RS2

@Zacharee1 Demoted from dev position.

@TheXed Funny you should mention "Windows"...

Edge is so fast, it can't stop crashing.

hm. i need 40 more points today.

I still prefer Firefox or Chrome though.
And the way Firefox is going, looks like Chrome for a while.

10:27 PM
@NathanOsman Oh?

@NathanOsman who doesn't besides the people who don't know how to switch

Older machines can't run Chrome, so there's that.

@TheXed Firefox likes to make scrolling really jittery and also crash on any webpage that involves Flash
@NathanOsman Thankfully, we have Chromium and Torch (Windows)

Laptops with 3 GB of RAM circa 2007 tend to work fine with Firefox. Chrome... not so much.

@Zacharee1 crashing on pages that use flash is a security feature.

10:28 PM
@KazWolfe lol
byebye Forbes

@KazWolfe ...or a security exploit...

@NathanOsman It's not a bug, it's a feature!

@KazWolfe buzz buzz

Sidenote: I can still run Flash on Android with enough hacks.
Sidenote #2: I don't use it very often.

Look at all these features!

10:30 PM
Wow!

I'm keeping my eye on Brave too... the Android app is pretty cool.
Loads pages in the background for you.

@NathanOsman Oh yeah, that's possible... Need Firefox but yeah

brave is chill

@Zacharee1 It's handy for live broadcasts that are still using Flash.

I used to install that on every Android I could use
but now, I haven't touched it in a year

10:31 PM
or the really good old newgrounds games that are still in Flash.

Flash games, that brings back memories.

there are a few really good ones.

They should convert to WebGL.

that is sometimes very hard
also i have a weird glitch with webgl
it's like my screen is breaking up where polys interact. so i see artifacts and textures flickering with each ohter
it's annoying

This library was responsible for a lot of 3D Flash games.
Now a relic of ancient history.

10:36 PM
i really want to find out why my card is doing that ;-;

@Zacharee1 stop using Flash...
So whats with the dirty cow?

@TheXed Root for every Android device
at the complete cost of security

@Zacharee1 looks like it effects more then android devices...

@TheXed any Linux using kernel 2.6.22 or later
This thing's 9 years old

nathan, you have to reboot.
bloody race conditions are terrible.

10:38 PM
wat

@KazWolfe reboot?

@Zacharee1 how do I know what kernel I am using?

your record server
@TheXed uname -a

@KazWolfe Lol. I already rebooted it a while back.

16
Q: How to make sure that my operating system is not affected by CVE-2016-5195 (Dirty COW)?

MukI am running following version of Linux operating system. Distributor ID: Debian Description: Debian GNU/Linux 7.2 (wheezy) Release: 7.2 Codename: wheezy I am not sure whether this version is affected by CVE-2016-5195 Can some one help me out to clear my doubt? Update : After...

10:39 PM
And my new server has livepatching.

damnit

Just use Windows. — StackOverflowed yesterday
^--- lol!

so what you're saying is find an exploit to target your server that will only reboot it.

@NathanOsman trudat
guyth
CVs plas

no.
those are boring.

10:45 PM
gosh i hope i'm gonna pass Control Systems. I better have, cuz i don't wanna see my professor 3rd time. I've had enough of him already
although he's not so bad if you do homework . . . second time around

so i need to use Dirty CoW to write a virus called Happy CoW
Replace all pictures on someone's hard drive with a photo of a happy cow.

@KazWolfe totally legal.

@NathanOsman there are no laws against it...
so @NathanOsman, I'm going to try to get a job with tech support scammers.

Against malicious entry into a remote system?

And then actually help people for real and for free.

10:55 PM
guys, I was looking at the inspect element of the navigation bar on AskUbuntu, for some reason I can't find any entry making the bar orange
the bar where there's a Ask Ubuntu logo, Questions, Tags, Badges

@IanC background image
#header {
    background: transparent url(img/bg-top-bar.png?v=51825ccd845b) repeat-x center top;
}
which in turn is this image:

@KazWolfe oh, just found it, thanks! I was looking at the wrong div

I was just reading this: recantha.co.uk/blog/?p=15741
I don't understand.

update your kernel basically

Pi == vulnerable

10:58 PM
Everything Linux == vulnerable
Just get a new kernel and you're good

FreeBSD FTW.

Hmmm, i'm curious though - somebody in comments pointed out that the vulnerability requires physical access to the device, so . . . it's not remote ?

correct
you need to be able to run commands

I think it means you need a shell.
Which of course can be done remotely.

so ssh is okay, but you need a shell or some way of running an arbitrary executable
