Q: How to restore as much detail as possible to a scanned image of an inkjet-printed page?

Nathan OsmanI have a photograph printed with an inkjet printer on a piece of paper. Unfortunately, I do not have access to the original file. Here's a small sample of what I'm stuck with: Is there any way to make this image look less like a printed sheet of paper and more like an actual photograph? The ho...

@Serg I'll reply here since I don't really want to expose that discussion, which is a mere argument. I don't even want to make a case about that user, the fact that I disagree with him doesn't entitle me to do that at all. IMO that's just a nonsense but since there seems to be agreement I think it's worth to set the thing straight (again).

Hello everyone,

@kos: Is a memory fault or I heard that you are IT consultant? I don't know.

Please help me. My intel nuc runs into a problem that says Fast TSC calibration failed
What can I do?

kos
@Helio No, not at all :D I had troubles with an hacked website once and I discussed it here, but I'm definetly not a consultant

@kos: My only trouble is of ethics also. Could I talk in a private room or something?
@kos: Niw I'm busy. See you later.

9:43 AM
@Helio I don't think I'm qualified to answer, i'm not an IT expert. If you want a mere advice of a technology enthusiast which had fiddled with some websites sure, no problem, but I don't think it will be particularily helpful. If you want feel free to take a room, ping me and I'll try to help
Looks like some people are recovering from friday night.

@A.B.: Do you have any idea about this by the way? :)

@ParanoidPanda - It was probably during a "site cleanup". We used to have these things where everyone went around and answered all the questions they could, and we voted to resolve answers that were good enough to get our unanswered count down. If a question was stale, low vote, and the OP didn't respond to a comment - closed as too localized. So, it was probably during one of those sessions.

Q: Linux - Log What Username and Password Was Tried

stefI'm using Ubuntu Server and I'm curious if there's anyway to log what username and password a potential attacker has tried. I can grep the /var/log/auth.log and see all the failed attempts but I'd like to see what username and passwords they are trying.

2:52 PM
@hbdgaf they fixed this a while ago, as the flags are cleared you get them added back to your quota.

@Seth - good to know. How long ago was it fixed, if you are allowed to tell me.

@hbdgaf I'm not sure on an exact date.. but before I became a moderator anyway.

Putting that data out publicly might help with the spam problem too. It would be a lot like saying "Waves don't work any more. Sorry :)"

user136984
I am glad that the spam situation has quietened down bit, well, actually, completely! :D

I'm not asking you to tell me. I'm saying that if it came out on the SE blog, we could drop comments during waves that link to the blog. Eventually they'ld get the idea.

user136984
2:58 PM
@Seth: At what level of rep is one able to see and vote to delete posts flagged as spam or offensive? Or do only moderators get that queue?

@ParanoidPanda The last one, there was an eye of the storm. I'm not yet convinced this one is over yet.

user136984
@hbdgaf: But it's not like they could even really make money out of it... They were just causing the site grief... But why?

@ParanoidPanda 20k users can vote to delete answers scored -1 or lower. 10k users can vote to delete closed posts. Spam/offensive flags are a delete vote in their own right however, 6 of them on 1 post will have community delete it.

@ParanoidPanda They might be stupid and think they can make money at it.

@Seth ik. The reviews say that the trackpad is utter crap and the display is really not that good

@ParanoidPanda No it hasn't subsided completely! You're still posting in the chat! :D

@Fabby I'm not sure I know what you mean, but I know I missed a joke.

@hbdgaf I meant: @ParanoidPanda's blabbering here in the chat room is like SPAM to me... (and that's why I added the :D because that is his answer to me needling him a bit in about 95% of cases .)

So, I should ignore chat for a while or it's actually a problem with the panda?

@hbdgaf Hmmm, I seem to not be clear today... Yes! @ParanoidPanda is the problem!
;-)

Thanks for that. I had him on ignore until the spam wave I think.

(remember yesterday: when he left the room, the spam wave hit. When he came back, it subsided... Ergo, he's the spammer!) ;-)
@hbdgaf :D

user136984
@hbdgaf: What? You had me ignore?! :P :D

3:19 PM
I have plenty of people on ignore. Don't feel special. It's part of how I am.

@hbdgaf when I remember correctly you were interested in "booting from iso" - right ? :)

May I ask someone to enlighten me on what the heck is going on with my bash ?
I use mksh most of the time, so this behavior is kinda weird
In mksh set gives me just the environmental variables, but bash gives that and also some weird functions

@Serg If no options or arguments are supplied, set displays the names and values of all shell variables and functions, sorted according to the current locale, in a format that may be reused as input for setting or resetting the currently-set variables. Hey, I have a Python CLI app (which involves a couple of scripts, not just a script), and I can't get to package it to a deb. Anyone can help me figure out how to debug?
I added a setup.py (github.com/awalGarg/nginx-lm/commit/…) and it works fine when installing via python3 setup.py install but I need a portable DEB package for my VMs.
The wiki.debian.org/Python/Packaging doc is pretty unreadable and doesn't cater for python3, and askubuntu.com/questions/399552/… doesn't work for multiple scripts' package

@terdon @Seth So . . .this question , my idea is to block that specific IP address, how hard could that be, right ? I've been trying different variations of iptables commands , and my facebook still pops up
( rephrasing : I am testing iptables rule on facebook )

kos
@terdon Don't go through many troubles using the phone to help me on this though, it's not important. When you have time if you want to look at this paste.ubuntu.com/12738176. Apparently there's no way to tell Perl to not interpret ? as a ternary or a ? ... ? operator

@kos you can't pass such constructs to-F

I am getting the HTML of an element from a jquery call and putting it into the variable htmlText.

@RPiAwesomeness okay?

@565656 I didn't get your point, however ok. See ya

Then I've got this: var curText = htmlText.slice(0,2);. Shouldn't that set curText to equal the first 3 characters of the htmlText string?

@kos because it is point blank

kos
@565656 Ah I see what you're doing there

@Serg Later

@RPiAwesomeness no, 2 is the item to stop at. So that would include 0 and 1, but not 2.

6:07 PM
If you want 0, 1, and 2 you would need .slice(0,3)

Well, it's not returning anything

that's probably because .slice() is for arrays and whatever you are operating on isn't an array.
(but I can't know without seeing where htmlText is set)

@Seth Wait, I thought slice was for strings & splice was for arrays?
Anyone here have Python/Javascript code on GitHub (preferably Python) I can work on some feature or bug fix for?

@RPiAwesomeness no, slice is an array function.

@Seth: That's just a contributing factor, not the reason, the reason is that it is identical in all senses other than one to the other answer, that being that it does not give as much detail, so I think that it should go as the other answer covers everything it covers and more, so there is no point of it being there, and it was posted after the other answer suggesting that they posted it knowing that someone had basically said the exact same thing.

user136984
I mean, both of them staying isn't going to help a future reader. Is it?

I don't see a reason to one either. Maybe the author will edit it into something better.

user136984
If there are two identical answers to a question, both answers remaining is just silly, like if I went to lots of questions, took half of an already made answer, and just posted it as an answer, I wouldn't expect for my answer to be kept, and how do you decide which to keep? Well, probably which is better.

@Seth pho?

@Seth not a big fan of tofu, but . . . what the heck, I'll go for it :D
@blade19899 pho is a vietnamese noodle soup in beef broth

@Serg you can't go wrong with the prefrozen kind anyway! (that's what they usually use in pho)

@Serg ah

8:45 PM
typically served with a side of bean sprouts, basil, jalapenos, and lime

(I don't eat much meat so sometimes I forget that other people don't get these dishes with tofu xD)
@Serg ooh, that's Thai Basil.

I usually just put beansprouts in my pho, occasionally - limes. Jalapenos and basil ? Meh . . .

yeah, same here xD

virtual hi-five, place hand on the screen somewhere around this comment

Goodnight! :)

Bye, panda ! sleep well

9:38 PM
@A.B. and @cl-netbox - you're not on ignore. Might have been at one time for a week or so, but you're not now.
@Serg I need to try pho, just like I need to try REAL ramen. I heard you can use spaghetti + baking soda to "make it more like real ramen" and the toppings.

@hbdgaf no clue about ramen, since I am mostly hanging around chinese/vietnamese kitchens. While being a 5th wheel on my friend's date, we went to one ramen place, but i haven't saved an address, so . . .no clue how to revisit that
That was pretty good in general, i'd say

@Serg :D

@Fabby ^_^ hallo

my hand is bigger then my (phone) screen...
is a thumbsup good enough???

@Fabby trust me I know the pains of having a small phone screen . . . but yes, a thumbsup will do :)

9:47 PM
i'm bored at a dance group's party... (being the designated driver)
and the au app only shows one screen of questions....

Ah, the fun of missing out on all the intoxicated debauchery , right ?
I'm at work, technically supposed to be studying but as always I am procrastinating. Kind of don't have any desire to do my java homework
Meanwhile, I am thinking what should I add to my amazon shopping cart

yeah and that everyone keeps forgetting i'm still out of a job so splitting the restaurant bill equally is not an option fir me... :(
:D i like buying stuff in a shop better...

Holly cow, @Fabby , no one has hired you yet ? I mean, there has to be at least one company in a need of a professional with your experience !

i got called back by google the other day that the hiring manager wasn't interested in even seeing me after 2 successful interviews...

O_O

9:54 PM
Weird hiring system they've got...
like everything ele google: Different...

I would buy stuff from a shop, but pretty unique stuff, like PS/2 to USB converter is hard to find nearby . . .or printed circuit boards for prototyping. I wanna make two variable power supplies for my electronics lab assignments. We don't go anywhere above 15 volts, so I'm using two 9v batteries to give input of 18 V and then LM317 voltage regulator with variable resistor to get the voltage i need. @HeatherBrown would know what I'm talking about, right ;)
@Fabby well, google is a big big company, they can make up their own rules, that's granted

but at least not as weird as. Blizzard's..
@Serg i drew my first motherboard with a wax pen.... (2 actually)

@hbdgaf ;)

i know something about electronics... ;)

:D
I . . . don't . . ..kinda . . .even though I am electrical engineering major in college; kinda trying to get up to speed

10:01 PM
Back at the time when circuits on a circuit board were 0.5 mm thick...
and dinosaurs still roamed the face of this planet...
;)

I remember in one of my classes the professor showed us a circuit board with all the chips that had all the digital logic gates, NAND and whatever . . . It's seriously astonishing how technology has leaped so far ahead

i know enough to get into trouble, but not enough to sort it out... ;)
chips?

The 7400 series of transistor–transistor logic (TTL) integrated circuits are the most popular family of TTL integrated circuit logic. Quickly replacing diode–transistor logic, it was used to build the mini and mainframe computers of the 1960s and 1970s. Several generations of pin-compatible descendants of the original family have since become de facto standard electronic components. == Overview == The 7400 series contains hundreds of devices that provide everything from basic logic gates, flip-flops, and counters, to special purpose bus transceivers and arithmetic logic units (ALU). Speci...

I've seen them with actual TRANSISTORS...
Yup. You should ask this prof to show you one with diodes
1 NAND gate = 1 cm^2

It's crazy . . . Though I can't complain about modern technology - packing thousands of those gates in a single CPU is quite . . .convenient ^_^
My coworker is amazing. Every saturday she just comes here and works on her homework for hours straight . . .
I dont get how she has so much focus

10:18 PM
I'm really good at concentrating on - hey look, a squirrel!

@NathanOsman hello , my friend ! How are your advances in PHP ?

Hopefully they're done. Hopefully forever :P
I finally got that plugin published: wordpress.org/plugins/hectane

Hectane ? I thought you were working on that cannonball thingy ? In any case, sounds cool

It's the same app - I changed the name :)

Sneaky, sneaky :)

10:27 PM
It let me grab this Twitter username:
@hectane
Lightweight SMTP client written in Go.
3 tweets, 1 followers, following 1 users
Much easier for people to remember.

@hbdgaf pho is pretty awesome.
@NathanOsman Do all your projects really need twitter accounts? :P

Sigh . . . maybe one day I'll be developing apps for wordpress or whatever ,too . . . .

@Seth No, but the important ones do.
And what is this?
I've only ever added one web address to one page over a month ago.

10:46 PM
@NathanOsman might wanna wait it out. I've heard facebook customer service is . . . kinda non-existent ? not sure how true is that
