12:00 AM
Nothing?

OK, y'all. Other sports beckon. See you again soon!

@chili555 Go play some sports!
Good for ya! ;-)

LOL! Bye!

Hi all

You don't get unemployment any more, but you can get some other something. Food stamps or welfare or whatever. I never made it that long. I just took sucky jobs first.

12:00 AM
@chili555 (and thanks for dropping by)

@hbdgaf on a day-by-day?

@Lucio Yes, daily 3.5 hour each way commute.

omg

@hbdgaf What are food stamps? (heard of them before, but..)

@Lucio I slept on the train.

12:01 AM
lol ok

@Fabby I think they call it EBT now, but it's basically limited to specific food products money on what looks like a credit card but isn't.

Oh! That's where Chicago is...
@hbdgaf So if you own your own house, you can still buy food, but no (let's say:) cigarettes?

@Fabby so, uh - he came back askubuntu.com/questions/645294/…

@Fabby Nope. You're not allowed to be on assistance and have any assets.

@Mateo yup! I told him to ask another question

12:03 AM
The thought train is "sell your house, rent an apartment, and get back on your feet."

as his previous one will help others...

@hbdgaf what is that water in the middle btw? looks like a lake

lol, not even sure what he is trying to say on that one...

@Lucio It is.

sorry for the ping spam
cool
that first month should have be worth it.

12:05 AM
@Lucio a big lake ;) I like going to the sand dunes up in indiana/michigan and there are waves like the ocean front there

wow, that sounds awesome

@Lucio it was sort of. made there in one month what i make here in six... but everything there is horribly expensive.
okay, nap-time so i'm awake for a chat later

i wont, so take care!

oo, I have a pic on my wall

Do someone around runs Ubuntu on her/his phone?

12:08 AM
@Mateo answering now...
@Lucio me... on a BQ Aquaris...

what is it?
the same lake?

See those two dots on the right, that is my sister and I

you are kidding

that is lake michigan

12:10 AM
that looks amazing, just like a painting
@Fabby does it run on with android side-by-side?

@Lucio No! You can overwrite the Ubuntu Touch firmware with an Android firmware, but I haven't tried that yet...

You better don't, Ubuntu OS looks nice there :-)
how does it works for you?

it probably wouldn't look like that now, wow - nps.gov/indu/planyourvisit/mt-baldy.htm

@Mateo Looks like a scene from a Science fiction movie!

I didn't knew you can have a beach on a lake! That's sick

12:19 AM
@Lucio It's definitely for early adopters...

right

BlueTooth FT doesn't work...

@Fabby the dune even tries to eat kids - nbcnews.com/news/other/…

but is cool to start developing apps with it

Bluetooth car pairing doesn't work
@Lucio That's for who it is currently...

12:20 AM
whatever gets first gets a big part of the cake ;)

Though I'm no developer (any more)
@Lucio yup!!!

QA?

@Lucio Huh?

no idea what do you do nowadays
sorry

@Mateo flesh-eating dunes!
Sounds like a very cheap copy of Plan 9 from outer space! ;-)
Question answered if you're interested! ;-)

12:23 AM
so yeah, quick sand can happen with dry sand and air - I think they said that there were old houses down there that collapsed to create the sink holes

@Mateo O_O
I've only ever seen sink holes in Australia...
(and they were in rocks, not sand)

As you're a reputation 1 user: If this answer helped you, don't forget to click the grey ☑ at the left of this text, which means Yes, this answer is valid! ;-)Fabby 8 mins ago
I see what you did there emoji >.<
BTW, so anyone can erase your phone data?

basically, because users forget and we can't have that happen...

@Lucio What??? Anyone can erase data when they have physical access???
Yes! That's why we keep servers locked up in dungeons....
(with dragons guarding them!)
(Dragons are a.k.a. "SysEngs")
:D

@Fabby I meant that fast
how much? 5 clicks

12:29 AM
@Lucio ever heard of dd???

lol

A.k.a. Disk Destroyer???

I thought we were talking about phones

I was going to do a @Terdon and actually type the dd command!

on mac's you were able to just change the password with any system disk...

12:31 AM
From 2 days ago "wiping all of someone's data" is now officially known as "doing an @Terdon"
7
(can someone star that ---^

poor terdon, he doesn't need to be mentioned here

so easy, that the teachers thought the administrator password was allays admin

@Lucio yeah, and it runs Ubuntu... Lemme check whether dd is build-in...
@Mateo :D :D :D

it was named that way so you can remember ;o

@Lucio Yup! dd comes standard on Ubuntu Touch!!!
>:)

12:33 AM
ouch
I saw a bug

@Lucio But to get to it you need to:
1/ install the terminal

oo, that and dreamweaver could launch programs without the users restrictions - by adding them as "browsers"

2/ type your root password
3/ type a correct dd command

then i guess it doesn't have users

@Mateo Ubuntu touch???

12:35 AM
see you people!

nah, I was talking about mac's

02.35 am here...

bye

later

@Mateo ah! :D
I havent't touched an Apple since Steve The Good One left Apple...
They should get him back...
... on active duty.

12:37 AM
I just used it to play chess before class back when

(He is still officially an employee)
Does anyone know what computer program has the lowest ROI?
It's a calculator: It turns a 500+$ machine into a 2$ machine!
>:)
With that, I'm off to bed!
G'night @all...
;-)

night

12:55 AM
@Mateo Oh my.
That's mildly terrifying

1:06 AM
I think I found a bug in Qt.

Eek!
Speaking of which...I still haven't received a response from the Gtk devs on my bug...

Q: WHY I'M SWITCHING TO UBUNTU FORUMS

thebluesquirelSo, I've been using askubuntu for a while now, but the whole the is rigged against the average user. So the same thing happens every time I have a problem on my computer and I go here for an answer First off I'm asking the question and I can't use pictures to describe my problem because I need "...

1:28 AM
The bug only seems to manifest itself on Windows...
And the Qt bug tracker is an incredibly large page to load.

Wifi and all Fn functions don't work on my laptop with Ubuntu 15.04. Any ideas?

Did WiFi work on a previous release?

2:20 AM
I tried 14.04, but no luck

1 hour later…
3:26 AM
Oh my... this bug is nasty.
You know you're in trouble when commenting out debug statements causes side-effects.

1 hour later…
4:38 AM
Morning guys

4:59 AM
@Fabby we need words of wisdom :) askubuntu.com/q/645279/367165

5:21 AM
I'm baaaaack!
And it's 11:30... Sleepy.

I find the one guy having the same problem as me and there's nothing posted afterwards.

Q: install php7 alongside php5 on ubuntu

Rookie CoderI have installed php 5 as my main version on ubuntu 15.04 which i use to develop my current projects. I want to install php 7 alongside php 5 is there a way to install both??

1 hour later…
7:07 AM
[ SmokeDetector ] Manually reported question: There is a person what he eats and his brain by Hahu Mome on askubuntu.com

That was weird.
My wireless mouse just randomly stopped working. The battery was fine, the signal was fine, Windows just decided for some reason that the USB receiver was no longer attached.
(For the curious, I've got Windows running in order to debug a nasty issue I've been having with a library I was working on. I really, really miss Ubuntu, don't worry.)

I don't worry... the more we are forced to use Windows the more we will miss Ubuntu.

7:42 AM
@Takkat :-)

Every time I used Windows I am 500% happy that we do things differently.

@A.B. reading...

@Fabby what? :)
Ah, the question

1 hour later…
9:06 AM
English question: Is it deinstall or uninstall or neither of them?

9:26 AM
@Fabby Well, I only had it in the second year of my senior classes and only in the advanced course... And also it was more or less only the basics. We did not really explain Schroedinger, for example ;)

Oli
@ByteCommander uninstall

@NathanOsman Ouch!

Oli
Though I don't think it's English as much as computer jargon made canon through popular usage.

9:43 AM
@Oli It seems to be no proper English, at least my Firefox spell-checker does not recognize it...

9:54 AM
@ByteCommander But anyone in the industry will understand! Just add "uninstall" to the dictionary... ;-)

I can do that?
I never thought of that...

"remove" would be better English, but no one uses that!
It's like saying "excrement" when you can use "shit"
no one uses the first except not to get banned from chat; same with "uninstall"
@ByteCommander Right-click, "add to dictionary"
@ByteCommander :D

@Fabby I'm so tempted to star that! xD

@ByteCommander :P

Ah, there it is.
I never really noticed that button...

9:57 AM
@ByteCommander If you do, hold up your left hand and count on your fingers how old you are!
;-)

I can do that.
Binary.
:D

:D So you never added "Desoxyribonukleinsäure" to your German dictionary???
Well, you live and you learn...

Nope.

I look up a word once in the dictionary and then just add it to my personal one so I never have to look it up again!
(starting with my name, which for some or other reason isn't in there! :D)

Oli
@ByteCommander That's odd. "uninstall" is in my en-GB dictionary but it doesn't like "Uninstall".
Or have I added it to my personal dict?

10:02 AM
I use the US dict.

@ByteCommander Wrong dictionary! Outside of the US everyone uses UK...

Oli
Yeah it's in my personal dict...

(as that's the English you get in school)
Colour, perambulator, anti-clockwise, ...

US has less weird words than UK...

Oli
*fewer

10:06 AM
Okay? Thanks.

Oli
And "burglarize" would beg to differ

Just that this was definitely not worth a star.

Not me!

When does one use less and fewer then correctly?

Is Paranoid Panda around?

10:07 AM
Nope.

less than me
fewer items

less only with "than"?

I would say "fewer than" is wrong...
(but I'm not a native speaker...)
@Oli ??? -----^

Oli
@ByteCommander There is certainly some ambiguity but broadly speaking if you're talking about one thing being smaller, or a unit quantity, you use "less", and if you're talking about a quantity of things, it's fewer.

Okay, I'll keep with this rule until somebody else corrects me again ;)
Thanks!

10:10 AM
:) Thanks²!!! :D

Oli
Use less ketchup!
We have three fewer bottles of ketchup than we did yesterday
These new bottles hold 100ml less ketchup than the old ones

ambiguous indeed!
back to jobs!

Oli
The ambiguity comes when you can argue that the less refers to the number, famously (here) "10 items or less" at a supermarket checkout.
But enough of that, here's our puppy having his first swim!

Erm, refers to the number... But I got it...
@Oli :D no hesitation!

Aww, what a cutie... :)

10:32 AM
Erm - why does an edit need more than one reviewers to get approved? I could have done the edit myself without any approval, so where's the difference?
And I am thinking about writing an F-Request on MSE about showing edits one has approved but are not double-approved yet instead of the unedited question... Any feedback from here about that?
Btw this is it: approve please

Oli
Bit weird, I'll admit. Perhaps it's to stop people robo-reviewing their way through the suggested edits list and make sure edits are as good as they should be.

@Oli Good Morning

Oli
Morning!

Can I ask for your help Here

@Oli Okay, but if I'm not in the review queue but at the question itself? I don't "robo-review" by walking through all questions... They could at least change it there or make the edit at least visible for me after I approved it.

Oli
10:40 AM
@ByteCommander Next time, see what happens if you click the "Accept and improve" box and push a few extra improvements.

Hmm... okay. Not really The Right Wayâ„¢, but a dirty hack, but if it works...

It is awful that smokey does never care whether somebody is speaking or not... He just shouts in.
Sometimes I even feel like he waits for somebody to talk so that he can interrupt him.

how rude

12:10 PM
@ByteCommander And this guy never checks spelling or grammar: only formatting... Whereas the spelling and grammar is the most difficult bit...

Better a better formatting than no improvement at all...
I was too lazy to recheck the whole thing.

I reject and improve his edits now...

Q: Ubuntu 14.04: not booting after kernel startup

MaxxerI already posted on askUbuntu, but I'd like to reach a broader audience since this problem is getting more complicated. atrun

@Fabby The command is at
You have to install it first.
But I could not figure out myself how to get it o work even without any sudo experiments...

@RPiAwesomeness If you edit the sudoers file, yes...

Q: Strange see-through pane on top of everything

Paranoid PandaI have just suddenly noticed that there is a strange see-through pane that goes on top of everything, there is not way to move it, close it, or move anything in front of it, it looks like this: So, what is it, and how do I get rid of it as it is rather annoying? And seems to have just appeared...

user136984
:)

which desktop or which window manager
and what compositor, compiz compton
@ParanoidPanda try changing blur settings: bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/781450

user136984
@Mateo: I'll have a look at those, I've got the Unity desktop, what do you mean by window manager?

Yes, but since I did a fresh install recently, no...

user136984
@Mateo It looks like that...

user136984
But not happening at the same time as how they say to reproduce that one...

3:32 PM
@A.B. Looks like he is missing stuff in that answer. What you did seemed to work fine.

@A.B. You're trying to get a rep 1 user to do a make?

I belive, he need sudo apt-get install cmake-data
@Fabby yes o_O
He drives me crazy

that's like trying to tell someone who's never used DOS to compile and link an executable
:D

@A.B. I think you're correct on that one.
@Fabby LOL

I wouldn't even start answering him: too much effort for too little rep!

3:35 PM
@Fabby I know

There! Sympathy vote!

@A.B. you got mine. +1

Thx

Yes, this is relevant, as they are all running Ubuntu :p

4:58 PM
@NathanOsman do you think that you might have had power failures last night? I know that some BIOSes default to power on after power failures.

No power failures.
