Hmm....
I can't SSH to the Pi.
Putting in the password isn't working ...
:P

Isn't that something you need to enable with raspiconfig

@Mateo Umm...it's always worked in the past...
Hm
ARGH!

@ByteCommander Having troubles with SSH & my Pi :P

12:19 AM
I never had a Pi nor did I use SSH... But that is one reason why I prefer Raspberry Pie to the version without "e"! ;D

Dear good gravy am I stupid
That moment when you try to SSH to your own desktop when trying to SSH to your Pi and can't figure out why it's not working
/me:

@RPiAwesomeness lol
I remember once I was setting up the firewall on my server and I ran sudo ufw default deny and then sudo ufw reload and then realized my mistake.

Oh noes :D
And I'm guessing you don't have Physical access :D

No, I did.
But I had to go hunt down a monitor and waste lots of time.

Ah :)
I'm probably gonna be taking some real IT classes this next school year.
It's actually going to be a mixture of 4 classes in one day, I just go between them.
Sadly, the programming one is in C# :P and the server software management thingy one is using Microsoft servers.
Game design/3D and the networking/physical server management/build & fix PCs part should be interesting.
Okay. So it's not the adapter, it's the Pi/raspbian itself that's having the issues with the adapter.
Curse you Pi/Raspbian

12:31 AM
hey guys
so i installed cmatrix

but i dont know how to enable it

you mean as a screensaver?

yeah

I was wondering that too.

12:34 AM
someone was talking about it a while ago on this chat
Earlier today

yeah I saw it.

Oh...Youtube remembers where you were in a video now?
That's cool...ish...I guess...

Thats been there for a while lol

Shows how much I watch long Youtube videos :D

Q: cmatrix to turn on after a certain amount of inactivity

ToroidalI have got the console screensaver cmatrix, and I was wondering if there is anyway of getting it to turn on after a certain amount of inactivity in the console you are in? OS Information: Description: Ubuntu 14.10 Release: 14.10 Package Information: cmatrix: Installed: 1.2a-5 Candi...

He was wondering the same, so star that question

Downloading LibreOffice for Pi 2 testing...

Maybe they will find an answer
@pingOfDoom but to use it normal type cmatrix in the terminal

This is cool...

1:10 AM
Boo. It looks like I'm not going to get to go to the 150th Appomattox reenactment after all :'(

1:40 AM
Ah! RPi 2! Love the things.
It's nice that they're powerful enough that you can do some medium-sized project development with tmux, valgrind, gdb, etc.
If I recall correctly, then the Pi 1 Model B wasn't really up to the task of anything larger than a dozen-file project (or so).
Or, rather, it was difficult to develop larger projects with it due to the single-core ARM11 processor.
Not impossible.

Argh! I can't get VNC to work on desktop at all
Grrrrr
Every time I try to connect to or from my desktop I get this:
Well. There we go!
Just a thing to note - the Pi 2 cannot run full Minecraft AFAIK.
Just wanted to make that clear :)

Q: hauppauge PCI cards /dev/video0 no longer showing up after hard disk replacement

CarlI had a working MythTV DVR a couple years ago. The hard disk failed, so it sat in the corner for a couple years. Recently, I pulled it out, put a new hard disk in it, and installed the latest Mythubuntu (14.04 amd 64) on it. However, the video cards no longer seems to show up in /dev anymore (...

@Seth Just finished the "We Are Anonymous" book you mentioned a while back. Quite a cool book, really. I very much enjoyed it :D
I can see why you would find that book depressing, people can be really awful under the guise of a virtual identity. Really gosh awful. :P
Now....to become a 133t H4xz0r...
:)

@RPiAwesomeness Yes, yes they can.
You must be able to read pretty fast if you finished that book so quickly :)

Anybody got experience with the Event Manger WordPress Plugin?
Need some help with it

@blade19899 the last program I used with the acronym WP was WordPerfect.

@Rinzwind Crap :(

8:31 AM
lol

@Rinzwind Was asked to modified it, and me and a co-worker said, yes. He's gone, and i don't have enough experience with WordPress or Event Manager, to modify its php code.

There you go with the 3 letter swearing >:-D

Oli
@karel Yeah that's still an answer to the question - it should be in the answers section.

Q: When asking for advice, How can I make my questions more clear?

LiverianI have asked a few questions already, and I get at least 1 comment saying that I was unclear, or didn't provide enough information. I'm very new to ubuntu, and I'm hoping to learn and get better, and I understand most Linux users are more advanced and don't want to deal with people who don't know...

Oli
@blade19899 It has a "Support" tab on that page. That's probably the best place to get support for it.

8:41 AM
@Oli They don't provide support when you edit their php code. Not in there "Support Policy" :(

Oli
That's not a universal policy. Many plugin authors I've worked with in the past have been more than happy to help... Sounds like your co-worker needs somebody who knows PHP.

@Oli My co-worker doesn't work here anymore, and i bin left with this task. Even though i said i'm novice in php. And i already talked to the author of the plugin. He said, " ...not in our Support Policy..."

Oli
@blade19899 Okay, so you need somebody who knows enough PHP to get what you want accomplished. It sounds like a poor candidate for StackOverflow and only tangentially within the remit of WebApps... You either need to go on an 80s-style training montage, have it uploaded into your brain, or hire somebody. Lots of freelancers out there who do little jobs like this - just make sure they have references.

9:15 AM
@reversiblean mtp is just full of bugs - especially the android implementation of the protocol. libmtp is the library linux uses for mtp sources - looking at the code there are lots of workaround to get around android issues. 14.04 & 14.10 use a relatively older version of libmtp. You could try a newer version ... or just workaround it as you have noted by copying stuff to your hard-disk

@Oli Posted on Stackoveflow, and don't have time to hire a developer. Plus, I'm the new developer they hired...
Meaning id just pissed them off if i say hire another developer.

Pay someone to work with you on weekends, like hiring your own teacher?

Oli
I don't mean as an ongoing engagement, I mean hire somebody to do this task, nothing else. PeoplePerHour, Freelance.com, etc...

@Oli payperminute >:)

@Oli @Rinzwind never heard of those. Let me check them out. Thanks!

Q: How can I install the latest version of libmtp?

coversnailIn the latest version of the libmtp library there are fixes for my Android device so I would like to install the latest version I'm just not sure how! I would assume that this would pushed into the official repositories at some point, so the smart advice would probably be just to wait, but I woul...

@Rinzwind I saw that. just wondering if there is ppa or something for ease of installtion

see the 2nd answer @reversiblean
it has a link to webupd8.org/2012/12/…
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/unstable
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install go-mtpfs

@Rinzwind go-mtpfs does not have a package for utopic

But that might be the one you are already using(?)
@reversiblean that might mean there have not been changes for utopic.
or it got dropped :X
But I would start with the accepted answer; its not that difficult ;)

@Fabby: Я могу говорить по-русски, просто моя клавиатура плохо работает и это значит, что я не могу много писать.

@edwardtorvalds please test your answers before posting. Especially if they use rm. Find's -size does not apply to directories.

4:17 PM
@terdon weird
co z directory is also a file

@edwardtorvalds Yes, but it does not contain the contents of the files in the directory.
It is, essentially, an empty file.

ok so since all directories are empty than it will delete all dirs

Actually, I played around with it a bit and find does seem to report different sizes for different directories for some reason. No idea why, but in any case, those sizes do not reflect the sizes of the files the directories contain.

thanks
thannks man, nice observation
i should delete that answer right?
or any corrections?

@edwardtorvalds Can't really do it with find. You would have to first find directories, then run du on them and then delete depending on size.

4:22 PM
i see

Something like find . -type d -print0 | while IFS= read -r -d '' dir; do [ "$(du -s "$dir" | cut -f1)" -le 1000 ] && rm -r "$dir"; done

are you sure, coz If you dont mind I will copy-paste this command or you give a new answer
@terdon

@edwardtorvalds Well, that will have other issues. For example, what if you have foo/bar/, and foo/baz. Say that baz and bar together are >100M but neither of them alone passes the threshold. That command will check foo first, find it to be >100 and leave it, then it will delete foo/bar and foo/baz leaving foo now empty and <100.
The OP should clarify how they want to deal with cases like that.
But yes, that command (which is very similar to one already posted) will serve as a naive solution.

@terdon you mean it will not delete foo but bar, baz?

@edwardtorvalds Exactly. It will delete both foo/bar and foo/baz but not foo because when it checked foo (which happens before checking its subdirectories) it was big enough. After running the command, running it again will also delete foo.

4:38 PM
@terdon please take a look at this question please..... :)

@edwardtorvalds I have. I was about to write an answer when I realized that the OP hasn't explained what they want in such nested cases.
Basically, the OP hasn't considered just how complex the problem is.

(you are talking about the former q ?)

The basic case where you only have one level of subdirectories can be solved with the command I gave above. More complex dir strauctures will require more complex approaches.
@edwardtorvalds Ah, yes, sorry. Were you asking about another one?

i can understand now, thanks for your wit

Q: why specific sequence of the option matters for tar command

edward torvaldsI was trying out tar command to make archive with .tar extension. please have a look at the following series of commands I tried: edward@computer:~/Downloads/Untitled Folder$ ls abc.jpg hello.jpg xjf.jpg edward@computer:~/Downloads/Untitled Folder$ tar -cfv test.tar *.jpg tar: test.tar: Canno...

this q

Ugh, tar. OK, let me see :)

4:40 PM
please take a careful look at the command i have show

@edwardtorvalds It's quite simple. The order of the options is not important but remember that some option take arguments.
The -f flag of tar is to give it an archive name.
Hang on, I'll just post an answer. Give me a minute

ok
please explain thouroughly
@terdon someone else took the credit :)

@edwardtorvalds I saw. I posted an answer anyway since I had started but you may as well accept the other one. They need the rep more than I do :)

haha
hey please give answer to the former q
and also mention the condition as a NOTE

5:00 PM
@edwardtorvalds Done

:-)
why did you remove -r option from read? its safe to use it

@edwardtorvalds I didn't.

for first one you did, but not for second one

I just gave the simple version first. That will work for most cases.
I like to give both since it's less scary that way.

ok
do you have any expirience with nvidia ?

5:12 PM
@edwardtorvalds More than I'd like but I'm not an expert. My "experience" is with trying to get the damn thing to work.

ok
in my nvidia control panel i can find any option for vsync
i am using 340v on ubuntu 14.04

5:38 PM
@edwardtorvalds I am on an ATI system (or AMD or whatever they're called today) at the moment so I can't check. I do remember seeing those options in nvidia-xconfig but I don't remember where,.
Another option is to create an /etc/X11/corg.conf file and put them there instead.

Q: How to Perform operations on files or directories with dashes or hyphens?

DevXMy question is that I was trying to rename a file named 12F-XYZ.pdf to 13F-XYX_ABX.pdf now the problem that rises is that both of hyphen the original and the required names have hyphens I know that for spaces we use \ to overcome the problem but what can we do in the case of hyphen or any...

is someone available to respond please

@DevX Your problem is unclear. As David pointed out in a comment hyphens should not interfere with renaming files.

@DevX Just so you know, pasting your question into the chat room just after posting it is considered rude. That said, you don't explain what your actual problem is. Hyphens shouldn't be an issue.
Just do mv old-hyphenated-file new-hyphenated_underscored-file

6:30 PM
Check the markdown view.

I fixed up the formatting and he undid it.
Now it's syntax-highlighting the command output instead of just the code sample.

fixed ;)

Generally using HTML is frowned on.
So that's probably what he was fixing up.

I looked closer and saw that he also combined the command with the output.
I'm afraid using <pre> is the only way to skip syntax-highlighting when it is automatically enabled for a question.

6:35 PM
Check my revision :)

Oh... cool!

You can use embedded HTML comments to manually control syntax-highlighting.

Though... those are HTML comments :P

True :P
I think the reason people (including myself) don't like HTML in posts is because it makes editing harder. There is a reason you're not supposed to use HTML to style things..
Actually, I just realized that.. It's quite disgusting that people are in the habit of using HTML to style something.. Yuck.

Welcome to the web before CSS was born :P

6:40 PM
Thanks! It's quite flashy in here...

When I first started working with HTML waaay back in (I guess) 2002, I wasn't even using stylesheets at all.
We used tag attributes to specify colors, layout, etc.

Luckily I missed most of that ;)

This will make your eyes bleed:
<TABLE CELLSPACING="4"><TR><TD COLOR="RED">Test</TD></TR></TABLE>
(Yes, it was customary to use uppercase letters for tags.)

Ughh, yeah, and you had to use tables for layout too.

Oh yes. We did.
Thankfully you could often be spared the pain of writing that by using something like Netscape Composer.

:P

user136984
No, really, I'm serious, we should.

What for?

because Klingon is an offical language

Who says?

Says everyone who speaks it. I mean it has its own Dictionary

6:58 PM
Just because someone else had enough time to waste writing a dictionary, doesn't mean I have that kind of time to waste writing a language pack.

buts its supported
....
and required for Federation Officers

user136984
@NathanOsman Don't insult the Klingon Empire like that!

and its seriously a Officially recognized Language.
No BS
