00:00 - 23:0023:00 - 00:00

12:00 AM
sup @fossfreedom - long time no speak.

@hbdgaf :) ... just doing a bit of tidying. Otherwise, just keeping out of trouble.

@fossfreedom heh. trouble knows where I am most of the time. for now it's just the radical advancement MO on the day job. if you can double-fist careers, you may as well just do it right?

yep - work hard - play hard.

exactly so foss.

12:03 AM
anyway - midnight here. sleep time for me. night all.

night buddy.

12:57 AM
@hbdgaf So I just saw. Thanks :)

It is what it is.

1:36 AM
wooooooooooooooooo!!
got a working feed search.
scope contest here we come
the problem was that the json was nested two levels

ah. json parsing can be a pain :P
(knows from personal experience >.>)

let me get a screen :)

@Mateo Woohoo!

so, now a long list of improvements... but it a real scope!
v.0000001 of the RSS Feeds Scope!

\o/
Good job!

1:50 AM
:D

so, next item is adding the search by a feed address

2:35 AM
I don't know what to do...

I think @KasiyA holds the record for the fastest to reach 5k
and she bounties a lot.
holy god.

@TheX then you probably want to go with 'Y'.
Unless you know why the file was created / modified in the first place, better to just let the new version overwrite it.
You can always make a backup copy of the file if it makes you feel better.

To late... I went with the default (n)... hope it doesn't explode

Me too.

rcS?
you should most likely be okay...

2:46 AM
I always pick Y unless I remember explicitly setting it up and I've always been fine.

@Anyone, who is running XFCE and xfce-appsearch?
@Seth, don't you run XFCE?

@Whaaaaaat nope, I run Unity.

awe
now I have to go download a 1.1GB ISO on a 3mB/s internet connection.

3MBPS?

3 megabit per second.

2:56 AM
Capital B is generally taken to mean bytes, not bits ;)

so. around 300KB/s

3 MBps is faster than my internet connection, and mine isn't bad ;P

there. i always get bits/bytes confused.
i just know that ISPs advertise in bits just because they hate you.

I don't mean to nitpick, but now you changed it to millibytes per second.

that's closer to my internet...

2:58 AM
@Whaaaaaat yep..

Fine. 3 Mb/s
it's one of those.

that's right :D
feeling for you :/

If I could hack into this antenna on my roof, I'd get 30Mb/s
If the password is on the top-10 list, I'm giving up on hope that humanity can figure out how internet security works.

<--- has 1 Mbps (128 KB/s)

I feel you.
I had DIAL-UP in 2008.
DIAL-UP

3:06 AM
@Whaaaaaat: Could you tell if you connected by listening? ;p

mhm,
But, my current ISP is 5GHz high-powered WiFi relays. As a result, my ping sucks.
Does ksuperkey need KDE libraries?
It doesn't look like it does.
/me goes forking KSuperKey to be more XFCE-compatible

@Whaaaaaat Me too. I had dial-up that year too.

3:39 AM
Speaking of speed, check out Amazon:
> "A single datacenter has up to 102 Tb/sec of bandwidth allocated to come into it..."

can i go steal amazon's internet?

I kinda wish I lived in Austin right now.
they have google fiber

I have 20/20 (international sites) 100/100 (local)
best I can buy is gigabit, though there's commercial 10gbe options around that supposedly use the same infrastructure
fibre is awesome even without speed
that latency!

my latency is 400ms on a good clear day.

3:49 AM
Despite my slow speed, my connection has very low latency. I'm thankful for that.
Usually, it's <100ms.

4ms from my desktop
and that's passing through 2 routers and a switch

4:03 AM
journeyman, this is why i don't like you

I have 3/1 on most days :-( sometimes 5/1

@JourneymanGeek Your dog looks miserable in your profile pic.

4:30 AM
@JourneymanGeek Would this be on - topic on your site? askubuntu.com/questions/552995/shipping-canon-pixma-printer

4:42 AM
@Whaaaaaat: plus.google.com/u/0/photos/106187684082000485043/albums/… he had his revenge on the hat.
@Seth: not reaaaaallllyyyy

Nice, Mr. Mohan.
Nice.

That is to say, if it was asked on SU, I wouldn't close it outright.
@Whaaaaaat: I'm not Mr Mohan ;p

dammit.
Display name?

(Mohan is my dad's name. Thanks to the disconnect between naming systems, proper way to refer to me might be Mr Ravi)

Fine then... Mr. Ravi, your anonymity online is over.
I want one...

4:48 AM
@Whaaaaaat: Actually, people around here know my real name since the SF elections

I really ****** *************** ******** ************* hate ebay
random asterisks ftw

@JourneymanGeek OK I'll leave it here than.

@Seth Can I flag for closing without actually closevoting?

@Whaaaaaat only with a custom flag.

But that annoys the mods.

4:59 AM
Why would you want to do that then anyway?

Say I'm unsure about a closevote

You ask a mod here ;p

Also, can we have a "very low quality" close reason?

flags are for exceptional circumstances

which is why i try not to use them.
because i do not like annoying mods.

5:01 AM
@Whaaaaaat I'm on a cheap tablet right now, can't really give a good reply to that right now.

okay, wtf
128GB of space on something SMALLER THAN MY THUMBNAIL?
I'm scared of technology right now.
and there are 512GB sd cards.
i want to make a SD card RAID hard drive now.

hello
we are quiet today

I see. I am on arch right now
I tried adding Fedora to my system it wiped/corrupted my efi so I did an Arch install :)

I'm distracted
Mentally psyching myself for a job interview ;p

I like Arch so far. I need to get virtualbox working though too
What kind?

Job interview ;p
Linux support at a vfx studio
(and momma said Linux wouldn't pay the bills ;p)

5:56 AM
heh Do they compile with linux or something?

@NoTime: Naw, they run linux almost exclusively
some macs

ah ok, yeah I had a friend who did graphic stuff and he would compile videos a lot, that is pretty cool
he did mac exclusively

(Guy comes on the mailing list complaining he can't find people who know linux at his company... Well, I need a job ;p)

I wish I knew enough to be an admin for linux..

@NoTime: I learnt everything the hard way

5:59 AM
@JourneymanGeek I am pretty newbish, but I have learned a lot by screwing my systems

s/screwing/screwing up

i don't know regex
I screwed em.. not even up

that's why they stopped working..

I've used linux for... I donno, 2007?
4 distros in that time (suse, mandriva, ubuntu and fedora)

6:01 AM
I had it in 2008/9 I believe.. but couldn't get my nics to work and was bouncing back and forth between windows
I have used.. arch debian ubuntu, and very little fedora
qt5 is backwards compatible with qt4?

I don't think so
Oh, and I ran KDE3 for a bit after KDE4 came out ;p

You are correct :) I tried qt5 with virtualbox (didn't have qt4) and it didn't work. I got it up now though

They use entirely different base libraries

I have only really used gnome3.. I dabbled a little with KDE4, and XFCE.. very little LXDE.. and of course unity was main thing I used.

and I don't think it was a 'simple' matter of recompiling
I'm mostly LXDE XFCE or KDE

6:09 AM
I feel like I am going to mess my system up fast.

I really like gnome, just from using a keyboard standpoint

Backup!

@JourneymanGeek Does markdown here support tables?

not as far as I know
You could probably make a ASCII table and pop it as code/fixed font

6:10 AM
I need to learn other partition programs.. without worrying about destroying my system..
last time I re-partitioned with info on my disk I killed system (I don't know where any of my flashdrives are)
So I would backup on a different partition if I could.. even though I know that is a horrible practice

ugliest table ever:

@NoTime: I recommend doing experiments in virtualbox, or better yet KVM
I don't touch stable systems
I can tear down and rebuilt a system with almost no fuss with this setup
and its not to painful to do occationally with rsync. Heck, you could even use git or some VCS ;p

@JourneymanGeek So, what are you on now, Journeyman?
but why KVM?
virtualbox is so much simpler

@Whaaaaaat: KVM is nicer for 'persistant' VMs
I use vbox on windows, KVM/virtmanager on fedora

but vbox is so much simpler imo

lol
not IMO, but you get the idea

I think I aced my interview today ^^

If you get to the table, that's over half the battle. I've only ever made it to the table and not won once.

lol
@hbdgaf: I've had one phone interview, one hangout, and this.
ALso ~20 applications no one read I think ;p

Seems like you're doing it right.

Applications are like cannon fodder. Companies want you to spend hours tweaking your resume to match their niche competencies, then throw most everything away out of the gate. I don't waste my time on that as much any more.

My brother went to 100+ applications. 2 interviews.
I'm at 25. And the three that I got to an interview? Someone told me to apply for it from within the company ;p

11:27 AM
That would be how it works.

I'm sure there should be a point to applying for jobs
Unless its a huge HR conspiracy

Example: Current opening in my day job management tree. It's my opinion they know who they want in the position shortly after they open the req unless there's nobody willing to take it. Then you have to get transfers from other places that will take on a bigger problem than anyone local is willing to take on.

I've applied for everything from library assistant, to security consultant.

You'll nail something down. I interviewed for cashier, because it's the only req they could get clearance to open at the time. If I turn it down, and I say give me a job, then which one of us is an asshole. And I said that to my interviewer. I was a department manager before I was out of my temp period, and it looks like a last rung before salaried a year later.

Yeah
this specific job looks awesome
Great kit, very relaxed athmosphere

11:33 AM
Well hopefully it works out. I'm taking the "pain" jobs to do the rapid advancement thing. So, my approach is a little different. Get in the door. Grab all the pain positions and make them work at least better than they did. It's one strategy.

Yeah, hopefully it does ;p

The downside is getting pigeon holed because you can do a particular thing that nobody else seems able to do.

11:49 AM
@fossfreedom ok, thanks for investigating that!

@Rinzwind To bad. Would have been a nice feature to have.

What about escaping the string in javascript?
You'd get "%"+charcodes

@Rinzwind Hhhmm. Go one. And example code, please :)

Anyone up for a lil experiment?

@AwalGarg Maybe. What's the experiment about.

2:25 PM
It seems to be not working in 14.04
looks like some kernel incompatibility

the really cool part will be if you can add any feed to it

heh, I guess so

and you can pull that area to refresh

nice UX
@Mateo so, right now it is hard-coded :P

this is the "search and discovery" part, so type in something and it finds a feed for you

ahhh

default search is "linux" so far, I think I'll change it to Ubuntu probally

haha, you should
Have you enjoyed the development so far?

4:43 PM
so the next part is making a second area the will take an address of an rss and display the articles in that feed
@Lucio It was rough getting started, but there is a lot of tutorials and stuff to go through so pretty good experience

I guess there isn't one-full-source but several sites where other devs share experiences
You should have a blog Mateo!

I'm thinking about making one, or at least doing something on the g+ i never use ;)

g+ will not be enough for you. You have great content and taste in design that will be lost there

I'm not sure why you're getting that error... We fully support Python 3.4.

7:39 PM
i broke ebay

@NathanOsman For real? I was not sure because the issue is still open github.com/2buntu/2buntu-Django-Blog/issues/69

Though I must confess, we haven't tested it in production on Python 3.4.

xD

There may still be bugs.

that was my initial though, lack of test

7:41 PM
That's still strange though. It worked locally for me.

if python/django was relatively simple to install, I'd help with development

yep

every time I try installing and configuring django, I want to punch a hole through my screen.

i already have a webserver
and it can't be dedicated.

it's hell.
oh yeah
and perl

well, that's not bad
I mean, you have bash too :p
@NathanOsman I would love to setup a date when you and I have time to test it together

@Lucio Yeah, I'll see what I can do.

7:53 PM
also, why does it need a few image libraries?

It needs to read image dimensions.

interesting

Also, the Ubuntu Touch screenshot generator uses it.

hey @hbdgaf how goes it

okay-ish. just got the "i know this particular position opened up and you put in for it. are you actually interested in that position or is it a just to move up move?". "it's a just to move up move." "people that do that, generally aren't successful in the long term. i think you'ld be better at this other one when it comes open... and i'm hoping it comes open for you." "point taken." conversation
@Mateo how goes it with you?

hm, intresting
good, I got the scope going

yeah, i saw you post some broad strokes. are you whittling away at features?

here is the latest
so the second catagory lists posts in a feed

So you can have buttons in scopes now?

10:54 PM
they expand into another page

I meant the search configure and star buttons. Are those stock and common to every, or configurable?

the gear goes to settings
and the star is for the whole scope
you can do just about what you want in settings
have selectable lists, put in input, have a switch button

hrm. well settings is helpful i guess. still no separate configurable/clickable buttons inside the scope results list etc though?

maybe... I know the soundcloud had a music bar with a play button, and you can launch to youtube from the youtube one
that is the only setting I have so far, since it was something you could specify on the url
