Hey guys. I'm considering upgrading to 14.10. However, I haven't been able to back up my stuffs because of a weird issue my laptop has communicating w. my external HDD.
I've done upgrades without backups before without any trouble, but I'm wondering if it's really a good idea to go ahead?
I would wait and manually back up everything, but my sources have all apparently been changed to 14.10 sources and so running sudo apt-get upgrade would basically upgrade my distro to 14.10
And yeah.
:P
I had to terminate the do-release-upgrade command prematurely (had just changed all of the sources AFAIK) because I didn't have the time to get it going properly that I thought I had

@Whaaaaaat - why did you make that edit? askubuntu.com/posts/115071/revisions you made it LESS clear not more. When you use letters to refer to /dev/xdyz you can say "Where x is h or s depending on the disk type. y is a letter representing which disk it is in alphabetical order and z is a number representing the order in the partition table" when you changed it to d* that was in my opinion a bad edit.
correction why did you approve that edit
scratch that it was just formatting... my bad.. haven't had my coffee yet.

8:04 AM
@hbdgaf So, I'm NOT in trouble?

8:21 AM
@Whaaaaaat no. i reacted while my body was still in pre-coffee torpor. i need a coffecup sensor that makes my keyboard not work until the cup is empty.

@hbdgaf Arduino!!

Coffee, you Basterds!

@hbdgaf LMAO!

@Whaaaaaat ^^

Luís de SousaI was able to accept this answer, but I am unable to up vote or comment on it. When I click the Add comment button I get the following message: User does not have permission to comment on this post But I am reported as logged on (as so in various other SE sites). What is wrong?

I reformatted a drive, and had to re-input its UUID in the fstab file, but the computer wont boot now.
it will only boot if i shut it down with the power switch, and then wait for that menu that asks for recovery mode
and boot from the first option there
im not sure what to do.

I told you yesterday... ask a question on site.

anyone know good media center programs?

Q: Is there a good media center program with these specs?

MewI'm planning on turning an old laptop into a media center for our home. However, I need some pretty specific features: Netflix integration Hulu integration YouTube integration XBOX controller support (Using 360 Wireless for this project) Possibly Steam integration for gaming. Possibly a web bro...

Kalamalka KidGreetings I am running Ubuntu 12.04. Recently formatted and renamed an eternal HD that mounted normally each start-up, but after formatting now when I reboot the machine the boot sequence starts then the boot eventually hangs up on a black screen. At that point I simply hold the power button down...

Hey fellas, I'm having a weird issue with my WiFi connectivity.
I can't connect to my home WiFi network, but I can connect to my Portable Hotspot created by my phone
When I try to connect, it will correctly ask me for a password, but then try to connect for a long time and then give up
I can't see any error messages, and it seemed to happen right after I installed the latest updates and restarted.

@MadaraUchiha I'm assuming they use a different encryption from each other?
Either way, lsusb or lspci (depending on what the wifi card is, you might need to check both). Get the product code and google away with your encryption type (eg ralink 1234 wpa2 ubuntu)

2 hours later…
12:20 PM
@Oli I don't think they are.
No, this one is WPA/WPA2 as well

1:13 PM
@hbdgaf pls :(

1:41 PM
Does anyone know the Meizu Ubuntu Touch - exact - release date, not late 2014, but an actual date: e.g. 20/12/2014.

Oli
I'm sure some people do. Hard to say if any are in here though.
If you can't find it with Google, it's probably not public information yet.

Awh. The price of the meizu? Also not known yet?

1:58 PM
So many js libraries to add to my website, just to get HTML5/CSS3 features to work correctly! ugh

Oli

Like what? Drop IE8 support. They're only around 3% and they need to stop cluttering up the internet with their non-updated XP installs.
<!--[if lt IE 9]>
    <script src="https://oss.maxcdn.com/libs/html5shiv/3.7.0/html5shiv.js"></script>
    <script src="https://oss.maxcdn.com/libs/respond.js/1.4.2/respond.min.js"></script>
<![endif]-->
That's all I did toward IE8 support in my latest build.

2:46 PM
may i ask a simple python question here?
Hi Rinz..

3:01 PM
hey @AvinashRaj and sure you can :=)

3:17 PM
yep, now i figured it out...

3:55 PM
That always happens, doesn't it? ;P
@RPiAwesomeness I can't speak for you and your setup, but I upgraded yesterday and, probably for the first time since I started using Ubuntu, nothing whatsoever broke after the upgrade. It was as if nothing happened.
Which is almost sad :/

4:10 PM
Try whacking it with a wrench. That fixes stuff that's broken and breaks stuff that ain't. Think of it as a modulator.

4:24 PM
@Seth confirmed: no changes in 14.10

haha

Q: how to know who created the tag?

devGeekIs there any way we can know that what tag is created by which user. I mean that who is the creator of the tag, is it the one who first created it while questioning? or the one who suggested an edit for the tag and is approved? or is it the one who approved the edit?

Anyone know of any good resources/tutorials/books/whatever for using Qt in Python? I think I'd rather use it over Gtk, but Gtk appears to be better documented in the Python category. I'd prefer to convert C --> Python as little as possible so..

5:54 PM
Happy Halloween for you out there!

@Lucio Nice forever alone stone in the back.

@RPiAwesomeness that might get intresting

@Lucio hah love that one.
@Seth The books haven't been written for pyqt5. There's a decent one for pyqt4 and the qt/pyqt examples are super easy to read. Let me see if I can find it laying around and give you the name.
Here It got good reviews on Amazon... and it seems like I read it. Can't find my copy at the moment though.

A: how to fix the hard-drive Bad Sector

Melc10 has an issue in bad sector. in that case install windows on your system and remove all the linux portions to ntfs. then do the fresh install.no need to change the hdd. i have dual os. my windows and bios Lenovo test tools never say bad sector.but ubuntu shows 1252 bad sectors. it happens beca...

@Whaaaaaat It just went to -3... doesn't community vote on it too after three?

@hbdgaf I just downvoted it as well.
I can't even begin to list what's wrong with that answer.

I think you mean the answer...

Problem solved. But, what the what? "bad sectors are caused by linux"

8:58 PM
It was just someone being obtuse. What they meant was it doesn't automatically zero the drive before it installs.

Zeroing the drive does not fix bad sectors, IIRC
@hbdgaf He doesn't say anything about zeroing the drive, either.
TBH, I really thought that was an audit. Shocked that it wasn't...

I read that in to "doesn't properly format". It's the only thing I can imagine that bit meaning. It may or may not fix a particular sector that is reacting a little too slowly by forcing it all the way to one end of charge. It won't "fix" it for long though. Marking with badblocks is really the solution. Is that included on the bootrepair iso? If it's not, it should be.

oh well. it'll get nuked for sure.

Q: 🎃 Which side of the Atlantic does the jack-o-lantern come from?

OreotrephesThere is an often-repeated 'fact' that although the pumpkin is an American plant, the Jack-o-Lantern tradition is an older Irish tradition (e.g., in today's Washington Post) in which turnips were carved rather than pumpkins. I was surprised that the Wikipedia article seems to treat this as a pop...

I now want to use emoticons in my questions.
@hbdgaf You'd need to have a base with four pins. On your coffee cup, there should be four terminals, (A) (B) (C) and (D). Terminals (A) and (C) are connected with a wire in the coffee cup. Terminals (B) and (D) are exposed on the base of the cup (liquid sensor)

@Whaaaaaat Or, I could just use a scale and tare it out to my coffee cup empty...

Pasta time!

9:12 PM
This coffee cup base will have a mini relay and two usb ports. When (AC) is CLOSED and (BD) is OPEN [cup is empty but in cradle], your keyboard works. When (AC) is CLOSED and (BD) is also CLOSED [cup is full in cradle], your keyboard don't work. When (AC) is OPEN, (BD)'s state doesn't matter, your keyboard does not work.

@Mateo I'm a carb whore. I love pasta.

Found a pasta machine at goodwill for 4 bucks, now we are making it fresh :)

@Mateo No penguin. It's a stock image.
Or is that @NathanOsman's thing?

Noice. (my best australian accent there...) You find stuff like that a lot more in bigger cities. I was amazed when I lived in a really huge city the first time the types of shops I could find just walking around different cultural neighborhoods. The italian and polish neighborhoods were pretty similar in what they carried, oddly enough.

omfg. it's going to rain at home here :D

9:18 PM
It snowed here

Brief aside. This is like porn for anyone that lives in a camper or RV dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2602924/…

@hbdgaf Want.
Mobile command unit here we come.

If there is anyone that doesn't want it, there is something wrong with said person.
My camper functions well enough for me though...
Now, if I could just get in to satellite and 4g hacking - I'ld be golden ;)

Yep. Mobile server room :D

I don't want to be a google-trailer or anything. Just a "This is my locus of control. And it can move. KTHXBAI."

9:30 PM
Or no, video broadcasting/production/living/server room trailer

That's why I'm taking out the queen sized bed with under bed storage and putting in a short throw projector and a nice futon.
The bunk beds are also coming out to make a micro-office and a rack behind the wall you put your back against.
I need to put it in blender to show people how I have it planned out. It would be awesomesauce... and achievable.

I don't get it. For a 4 year old?!?
@hbdgaf Make sure there are no power buttons on that server rack.

Behind a wall that folds out if you remove the chair.
That way you can cool it separately.
@Whaaaaaat Dad's are awesome. You'll get it when you're older.

That tent is becoming a high-power cell antenna.

Oli
@Mateo $4!? So jealous.
Eek, wrong @

9:39 PM
Mmmm

@Whaaaaaat Who is this?
lol
You CAN reply/ping yourself.

Oli
@Whaaaaaat Yeah but please do it in the privacy of your own chatroom. Nobody wants to watch you pinging yourself.

@Oli Well, now we know. I won't actively do it.
Or even passively. Too much work.

Still no Nexus 6 devices on sale outside the US.

Hi @NathanOsman

9:48 PM
This may go down in history as the worst product launch of all time.

They said they sold them really fast

They did.

And the were holding out for contract sales...

They sold out in less than a minute. Some people were refreshing at 5 second intervals and it sold out between refreshes.

@NathanOsman Ubuntu Edge.

9:49 PM
And none were available up here in penguin land (Canada).

@NathanOsman You want me to buy you one and mail it to you or something?

I've got a script on my Raspberry Pi monitoring the product pages for inventory.
@hbdgaf thanks, but the US version is different.
I need to get the international version.

Yeah. CDMA only, no GSM or some such probably...

@Whaaaaaat that failed on purpose as a plubicity stunt

@Mateo what.
I WANT EDGE

9:56 PM
@Mateo It was a relatively absurd funding goal. I would have laughed quite heartily if they had made it though...
I'm just waiting patiently for the forthcoming touchscreen kit from the raspi foundation.

Yeah, I remember something about the date it was started

Touchscreen kit?

I was reading this and found this when it turned out the product is available but not still in production.
So, raspi tablet would be smeksi.
It would bring my modular tablet theoretical design that much closer to completion anyway....

10:12 PM
Ah, here it is
Mariner 1 was the first spacecraft of the American Mariner program. A range safety officer ordered its destructive abort at 09:26:16 UT, 294.5 seconds after it was launched on July 22, 1962 as a Venus flyby mission. According to NASA's current account for the public: The booster had performed satisfactorily until an unscheduled yaw-lift (northeast) maneuver was detected by the range safety officer. Faulty application of the guidance commands made steering impossible and were directing the spacecraft towards a crash, possibly in the North Atlantic shipping lanes or in an inhabited area. The destruct...
I sensed a space theme going from the begning.

Two surfaces meet doesn't point to a watch. It's simply saying a touch surface and the conventional screen imo. And the whole calling the thing Unity being about convergence across delivery devices. I didn't get the reason behind Unity at first, but I did later - and it made me hate it less.
@NathanOsman So you see why I like the touch kit for raspi?
o/ @Lucio

hi there
the mariner caught my attention

anything else interesting floating about in your brain?

I. could. not. hold. the. laugh. at. that.
I was just thinking how sweet it is to learn new things every single day

Just make the rest of the tablet around that, maybe even phone with that size

10:24 PM
The compute module idea is super nice. I like that they are exploring all angles including:

World of things interactive devices

and

I just need a cluster of low horsepower devices.

Frankly, I haven't done the math on whether it's THAT much cheaper to use compute modules as opposed to just a horde of individually usable raspis. From a convenience perspective, the trade-off would have to be significant.

e.g. - I'ld rather have a hobby tablet the thickness of an rj45 adapter that is both easy to put together at home and readily source-able because - well, because I can. it's also horrifyingly versatile. conversely, if you want to be competitive as a consumer device you have to be super-thin. a totally different kind of awesome. I don't need it to fit in my pocket. I just want to be able to source parts, tell people about my build, and have it be able to be reproduced.

@Mateo i like their new site

Q: Problem installing software from Ubuntu software-center

user76196Whenever I try to install anything from the Ubuntu software-center, I can't because an error get's in my way. How I can fix it? Also when I do this in a terminal. It doesn't fix my problem: $ sudo apt-get install --reinstall software-center error : in heder : Requires installation of untruste...

also, i have to work tomorrow... but i get a 3day weekend next week. so it sort of evens out if you don't count all the house maintenance and laundry getting squished in to one day and not having a real day off for two weeks. at least i made an extra 500 bucks this week.
i needed it though. i was behind on my savings plan.

@hbdgaf that reminded me about Ramen

10:37 PM
ramen isn't actually that cheap for the calories you get. it just makes you feel full. and i need real calories to do my job.
you're better off getting a huge tub of peanut butter and eating it with a spoon, then drinking a gallon of water.

absolutely
It is interesting, but I got the best academic results when I was hungry

that's part of my current problem. i'm a sort of control freak. and i got my life bits ratcheted down so hard that i'm pretty much in control. now i'm not hungry - metaphorically - and i'm soooooo lazy.
at points in my life, i had someone to point me at problems and say - with weight in my head - "it would be good if you fixed this" and i did. but i can't get that weight artificially. i have to want to do something.
so, it gets really complicated.
wow.... those chat flags disappeared REALLY fast.

did I missed something ?

if you blinked in the last 30 seconds and didn't see two chat flags bump in, then yes.

yep
I go upstairs to put snickers. It is getting colder

10:45 PM
It is.

Today I saw a BS CV.
it is kinda feat

lol
three new worlds learned :)

Flamethrower can!

10:54 PM
Nice. The problem with doing it that way is that if you don't make sure it is all run off or evaporated, you get ice. I'ld rather walk through 6 inches of snow than an eighth of an inch of ice. Just saying
@Lucio I just like to know the right stuff. The problem is knowing the right stuff happens harder than knowing the right stuff 6 months later...

yep

like A LOT harder

you need to know make-that-stuff-work. Later you will find the right stuff
at least that is how it happened to me with angular
btw, learncodethehardway.org

fair enough. i don't plan on using a quarter of the random stuff i know... but it was all relevant "the right stuff" at some point. it's not that i want to be ahead of it. i just sort of need to be ahead of it for personal purposes.

I will never remember an explanation of a professor on the college..

11:00 PM
I didn't have professors. I had course deliverables, a lesson plan with readings, and google. I think I'm stronger for it. You can't convince people of that though.
@Lucio it's nice that they put up a sort of "write the book. really, people want it." guide.

As a programmer you want it to be working good, as a professional you'll want it in the right time, even for your own sake you'll want to write good quality software.
That was supposed to be the continuation for the dots couple :)

I don't mind shoddy parts if it gets a vehicle working for a time until I can replace the parts. The problem is that when you operate that way, you never go back to replace the shoddy part you knew was shoddy when you put it in.

that's the thing

@hbdgaf Macs are like cars that come with shoddy parts that can't be replaced.

@Whaaaaaat I want to star that, but I won't. It's an exercise in proper judgement.

11:03 PM
@hbdgaf You have passed the test.
hbdgaf has leveled up to level 15 of the Common Sense tree.

star in one.. two..

nope

am I the only one with gtranslate broken?

You mean in its normal state?

or common but yeah

11:06 PM
@Lucio I deal with it EVERY day at work. It super-pisses-me-off-to-a-degree-you-probably-can't-even-understand-levels-of-ube‌r-retardedness prevalent where I work.

wow, that was a bit.. later

you're fine. i'm not on fire or anything. it's just a compartment where i keep work.

screencapped.

is that a word?

the reason "screenshots or it didn't happen" exists.

11:09 PM

why are you talking about snow so much?

I'm a bit late to the snow conversation, but there we go

Can't I put some socks?!

@Lucio it swowed this morning for me here

11:11 PM
TWC turned into too much of a news site for my tastes.

@Mateo that made me smile on so many levels.

oh, that's for more than some socks
@Mateo lol , I remember that episode
lovely

Aw, I didn't get the clip where they burned down something...

Not for nothing, but burn it all to the ground. If you're going to start, you may as well finish.

Fun fact: "Finding Nemo" contains Latin. nemo = nobody. Marlin lost all of his children and his wife. His entire quest to find his lost son was a depression-based psychotic event, similar to schizophrenia. #ChildhoodRuined

redirecting to health.SE.. please bear with me

I would call that the opposite of a fun fact.

haha, agree

In addition to the aforementioned fun fact, Dory was also part of Marlin's imagination. Dory was Marlin's own real mind! While Marlin thought of himself as sane/normal, his mind was projecting itself in the form of Dory to him.
The upcoming movie "Finding Dory" will be about Marlin trying to find and make peace with his own mind and the fact that he lost Nemo.

let's talk about fight club:

11:24 PM
is that a new series?

In essence, Dory (his own mind) was lost, and Marlin must find himself.

@Lucio it's an older movie that examines the path whaaat is trying to steer the conversation down. i have a tattoo of "on a long enough timeline the survival rate for everyone drops to zero" btw. just saying.

@Whaaaaaat and you need a friend
(^no bad intentions there)

@Lucio My friend is the internet.

No offense taken. @Mateo is a friend of sorts. I certainly appreciate him... and you. There are local people whom I also appreciate. It's just a thing.

11:28 PM
@hbdgaf I am planing a tattoo of "long stories only hurt when they become so deep to have them tattooed"

You owe me a keyboard.

:D

@hbdgaf Who?

@hbdgaf BRB. Gluing all of the keys on my keyboard down. I'm going to need your address so I can send you your keyboard.
@hbdgaf I can still read that. Edit history bro.

WhoWantsToMakeMeASandwich.js

@Whaaaaaat I know. I do it as a courtesy to the mods. They get notifications if a certain number of deletions happen in succession. So, it's a way to say, I don't really care, but it's deleted. Also, I care about the time of people other than myself.

@hbdgaf "If I had a tumor, I'd name it Marla."

@Mateo My ex-wife was obsessed with that movie. Just a theory.

@Lucio var Sandwich = ["sourdough slice", "mustard", "ham", "swiss cheese", "mayo", "sourdough slice"]

that should be ingredients O.o
or in software pattern, decorators

@hbdgaf its a movie that gets you thinking
I like that they did subliminal flashes all through the begining

@Mateo This is also true. She wasn't stupid, but she only caught the high-points... which is more than I can say for some co-workers that said "You're no brad pitt" when I came to work on Halloween dressed as jack/tyler. To which I responded: "Did you watch the movie? You do realize that Tyler did not exist right?" and they shut down.

probably not.

no :D
that is what makes it so awesome
Fun fact: I just finished eating a sandwich

Output: Tasty Sandwich!

in fact, it's smarter than you, dude

@Whaaaaaat ^^

11:45 PM
@hbdgaf You wanna fix that code?

That is a question from someone who did never do js

No. JS is an abomination that I find abhorrent. I would have to take an extra bath for that one...

No one in earth would want to fix JS code!

@Lucio I'll get Codegolf.SE to fix it AND golf it up.
They'll do anything for rep over there.

@hbdgaf Uhm... Perl? Or [cough]... PHP?

11:48 PM
@Whaaaaaat SMH

@NathanOsman shame on you for even suggesting it.
@Whaaaaaat you don't even WANT to know the meme I almost posted in response to that...

@hbdgaf Or do I?
@NathanOsman Whut? I like PHP. And Perl is fun.

@Whaaaaaat O_o

whaaaaat to that

11:51 PM
and now we are all watching Forzenny's profile
how can you find that video.. sometimes you make me run out of words

Moto 360 went on sale in Canada today.

@Lucio I find that video by having pure awesome in a sauce, which I sprinkle over my spaghetti. I then occasionally eat said spaghetti. Resulting in awesome video links.

resulting in a new dirty shirt every day

The dirty shirt part is pretty automatic. I don't have to work for that.
