Q: Start/stop service script like Ubuntu for RedHat

emckIs there a .sh script that manages starting and stopping the service like Debian/Ubuntu but for Red Hat/Fedora? Looking to place it into the file running some software.

Anyone know of a utility like zless, but that supports markdown?

@Seth: blog.metamatt.com/blog/2013/01/09/… looks like a start
shamelessly admits to just googling that up, but it makes sense.

yeah I read that already. Right now converting it doesn't suite my needs :/
This looks hopeful though: github.com/tj/mad

@RPiAwesomeness looks like I was mistaken, not a i5. Was another AMD variant.
Sorry!

2:34 AM
@jrg That's okay :D Thanks anyways! :D

Anyone ever used Light Table?

@Seth I am on Ubuntu Mate 14.10.

@Seth It looks a lot like Sublime.

@JasperLoy Yay!
@NathanOsman I thought it looked more like Atom, but ok :P
But Atom's vim plugin is annoying >.>
So, what are you thinking @JasperLoy? Like it?

The default font in Atom gave me a literal headache.

2:40 AM
Just change it :P

@Seth Yes. It might become my favourite distro. I hope they release Ubuntu Mate 14.04 LTS soon, as mentioned in their blog.

That'd certainly be nice.

@seth Is your age a secret?

@JasperLoy Well, everyone who started talking about it suddenly disappeared...
lol, ok, yes. and no.

2:41 AM
Can you tell me how old you are? LOL.

I'm sure there are a few people around here who know, but I don't really like it.

OK then, up to you. I turned 33 this year.

I see :)
I decided a while ago that I would just be an anonymous person on the internet.. I got too paranoid :P

OK. However, I am a very weird person. Don't try to imagine my thoughts, lol.
My top 4 choices would be: Debian with Mate, Ubuntu Mate, Mint based on Debian with Mate, and Mint based on Ubuntu with Mate.
It would be hard to choose between the 4, lol.

haha
The main reason I use Ubuntu is because I love the community :)
and I LOVE Unity, although I understand that isn't everyone's cup of tea.
If I couldn't use Ubuntu I'd probably use Debian with Xfce.
oh, and Ubuntu has nice wallpapers and catchy names :P

2:49 AM
My favourite is actually Microsoft Windows with Microsoft Office, lol. I will buy a copy when I am rich.

What do you think of Windows 10 then?

I switched to Linux just to experiment, and I can't reinstall my Windows now because I already wiped out everything and have no recovery disc.
@Seth No idea, not following latest developments. But I hope they go back to the old look. That is, I prefer Windows 7 to 8.

@JasperLoy basically, they put the start menu back(with tiles stuffed in) and put the metro apps(the full screen ones you couldn't get out of) into windows, added a search(that also searches internet) and multiple desktops

I really like it (I have it installed on another partition)
@JasperLoy That's a sad story :/

@Seth but they do have keyloggers and stuff, since it is a preview...

2:55 AM
Don't you have a MS product key somewhere on your computer?

if it is a laptop, it isn't always that easy...

@Seth But having the key itself is useless without any disc!

In the US all computers ship with an OEM product key so, theoretically, you could get the manufacturer to lend you a Windows CD/USB for a week and you use the product key on the machine.
(I've done that 4/5 time for different friends, it generally cost around $20/$40 USD, but that is a lot cheaper than Windows)
@Mateo yeah I read that.

@Seth some of the major ones have gone manufacture specific, with xp you could use a OEM disk with the key, but you probably need the manufacturer’s disks

@Mateo hm, well it is usually easiest to get those anyway, but good intel. Thanks.
iirc Toshiba sells you the disks and Dell rents them or lends them to you..

3:03 AM
Will I have problems using Windows after using Linux for too long?

hrm, dell.com/support/diagnostics/us/en/19/… "If your Dell device is under warranty"

@Mateo The ones I worked on were all out of warranty.
I can't remember, but they probably charged us a small fee because of that.

@Seth ah maybe

@JasperLoy That probably depends on your hardware and your habits. I'd go dual boot.

just too much of a headache, the church computer asked to be activated again after rolling back an update they pushed that was crashing stuff

3:07 AM
@JasperLoy: In my opinion, no
I've been bouncing back and forth for the last decade or so
@JasperLoy What version of windows?

@JasperLoy I would, but... you'll probably do fine

@JourneymanGeek A future version, lol.

With 7 and better I'm pretty certain you can just grab a retail iso off digital river, and use the key on the sticker.

that's correct

With 8 onwards, I think they key is embedded in the bios.

3:09 AM
also correct, just get the iso

Also, for experimenting with linux, VMs are nice ;p

@JourneymanGeek not if it is a manufacture sticker

@Mateo: It worked for me with windows 7

me too

(but then again, I dropped a total of 350 dollars for a small linux box, and its glorious)

3:10 AM
windows 7 with a hp serial gave me major problems with a oem disk

@Mateo: I didn't use a oem disk, I used a retail disk

I had no trouble with oem iso on lenovo and toshiba

@JourneymanGeek aren't the digital river disks oem? or do they have manufacture specific ones

No, they are retail

the iso I got from digital river was oem. key was to match iso number with number on sticker (separate from product key)

3:13 AM
@Mateo HP is a bit... different.
but I'm surprised it worked too.

@Seth yeah... that is for sure. I've had nothing but headaches with this hp(with windows).
I use all Ubuntu at home :)
@JourneymanGeek I've seen a 7 with the bios thing, and not a real key on the sticker, that seems to be rare though

In a way, Ubuntu Mate is the real Ubuntu that would be if not for Unity and Gnome 3, lol.
Who knows, Ubuntu Mate might rise to become the no 1 distro on distrowatch.com
It is not listed there yet though
Why Mint overtook Ubuntu was because of Mate, I believe.

@Mateo: OEM installs use the bios thing but you can still use the sticker key

3:58 AM
@IonicăBizău I have no idea what the heck is that but I love it
:P

Q: Does Stack Exchange have a similar topic for debian linux?

Douglas G. AllenI know that this is Ubuntu but it is debian based and I'm not really using Ubuntu. Where can I go for general debian questions? Thanks.

@Lucio I always seem to miss you bro...
@JasperLoy Mint is popular because it "feels" like classic Windows and came around while Windows changed their interface. The timing was near perfect. The problem is that they don't handle their own bugs - and everyone winds up here asking about how to fix XYZ. Ubuntu is facing the convergence problem and released Unity before MS released Windows 8... So, I think they're still ahead. You're trying to please two different camps there.
One wants convergence across devices, the other wants familiarity. So, it's two different goals. I use XFCE for now, since I'm more concerned with something I can make feel right to me. I'm not horribly concerned about convergence.
@Mateo HP tattoos their boards. It's called a code purple. They allow re-tattooing boards and provide utilities to do so.

Is Software Management = Package Management? or what is relation between them?

Different marketing names ;p
The average mook wouldn't know what a package was, anyway

NEW 404 error solution to fix:

I copied my sources.list and changed server to main sever from software & update and ran sudo apt-get update then I restore my original sources.list and then again I ran sudo apt-get update then stil the error not fix. then I run these three commands I think (these are last 3 commands from my bash_histroy) then I run update again and 404 error gone and fixed my problem :)
these 3 commands is as following
sudo apt-get install ..
sudo apt-get install ...
sudo apt-get install .
I found the solution with trying this question

4:05 PM

Hi
anyone using a fresh install of 14.10?
Is Ubuntu One still bookmarked in Firefox?
Don't want to download the whole 1GB ISO to know this simple fact.. :)

5:51 PM
@Aditya me. and no but I guess it depends on your bookmarks ;)

@Rinzwind If it's a fresh install with default Firefox profile, the bookmarks should be the same for everyone.
Last time (14.04)... the bookmark for U1 was still there although the application was removed :)
Anyways, thanks for your confirmation... I just wanted an answer for this JLT..

@Aditya mine get synched from my online profile ;)

@Rinzwind Oh yes... Now, there are Mozilla accounts too... I forgot about that..

6:18 PM
Hia
Lol, 14.10 version doesn't have the kernel-headers package for 3.13.0-37... only for ubuntu 14.04...
...
so quiet
well, gonna do something
bye

6:55 PM
so that's weird. the yahoo stock api isn't returning results for google (goog) but it is returning results for apple (aapl). oh well

7:14 PM
@Seth It's sad that most people can't get all of the bronze badges.

7:44 PM
@Rinzwind One closegoat added.

@AmithKK Some of the ones that don't, it isn't because they can't.

8:22 PM
Shouldn't this edit really be a comment? askubuntu.com/review/suggested-edits/336024

wow, it got robo reviewed...
bam, done
so yeah, anything that starts with "Let me put in my two cents" usually isn't a good edit

8:54 PM
@Mateo sigh
@AmithKK how do you mean?

9:19 PM
@hbdgaf same do I think

not this time.

\o/
how are most things going?

@Lucio hi

9:25 PM
Hello bro :)

@Lucio how goes it for you?

pretty good

@hbdgaf I know what you are referring to but I still get a mental picture of real pandas...

@Mateo hah... yeah. know what you mean

I escaped bee death twice in a day so now feeling alive :D

9:28 PM

@hbdgaf that seems reno911 hehe

I laughed pretty hard when I saw it the first time.

I know what you gonna do on the bike next time ;)

My question is, from the officer's perspective: How do you appropriately react to that?

Laughing if you are the officer's partner :P

9:32 PM
bet some places would list it as assault

russia?

it's classifiable as assault on an officer in the US

ouch

i'ld hate to see it go to a jury trial and have the defense pull out the video though...

I have no idea how does US rules :S

9:34 PM
no. no i wouldn't
See? The officer was clearly assaulted. And by that token, we are no longer to hug a police officer ever... ;)

are you still on trusty?

yes

same here

i generally leapfrog LTS unless there's something i really really want in a rolling release

same here.
I tried 14.10 in a VM but it didn't even boot :/

9:41 PM
yeah

I got some graphical glitch.

ouch

Still not sure what exactly is causing it.

requires hardware opengl to function properly probably.

Tried unicorn on the college from USB and worked awesome
But there is no big feature. Gonna wait till this thing breaks or something to upgrade

9:44 PM
there are nice small things, from what i've read. like docker.io is now softlinked to docker in bin

I still need to take the day for docker though

i took a day for it, and it worked out fine. i still prefer lxc though

I am using chroot for the moment
jk

The thing I don't like about docker is that it can't do differing arch yet.
Okay, I need a small nap. I was overnights for a week. I'm slowly adjusting back to daylight.

do it slowly, ur brain will appreciate it
before you go...

ParaDoXI am running Ubuntu 14.04, with 3.13.0-38-generic kernel on a MacBookPro11,2.
