Q: How to improve the framerate of XCOM in Ubuntu?

Shaun GilliesI am currently trying to run XCOM: Enemy Unknown/Enemy Within on Ubuntu 14.04 with an nvidia GeForce GTX 260 graphics card. After some searching of the web, other nvidia users have also been having similar problems on all operating systems with the game. However, on Windows operating systems, the...

Screenshots from Windows 10 incoming...
That's the new multi-desktop feature.
Ubuntu has had that for the last, say, seven or eight years?

What are the keyboard shortcuts for switching?

Good question.

@NathanOsman Since I've used Ubuntu..

Alt+Tab switches windows.
Win+Tab switches desktops.

4:22 AM
Oh really?
Win+Tab used to switch apps in 3d mode.
Interesting.

It didn't do that in Windows 8.
I think that was only for Vista and 7.

I guess I never noticed ;p

How can I fix this type of panel

disable the broken plugin you installed.

Which?
I want to fix menubar which is disorderd.

idk what you installed, but it looks like someone made a half-baked unity-mac-esque plugin that instead of being a widget you add to the taskbar, it tries to present as an applet.

Xubuntu

it's not stock. that doesn't happen stock. you did this.

7:13 AM
As you see in image menus like: file, Edit.. is disordered and also right-side is empty (indicator disordered)

yes. you're not listening
and now you're back on ignore

Help me to fix by this.
I think now it crashed/bug:

Elder GeekI'm wondering why my answer to How do I enable Ubuntu (using full disk encryption) to call LUKSsupend before sleeping/suspending to RAM? was deleted and if it could be considered for restoration. Q: Would there be problems installing Linux on this device?

GeorgeI'm holding out for the Thinkpad Helix 2, which has a detachable tablet as a screen (the device comes out later this month). I've heard that installing Linux on bleeding edge technology can be problematic due to driver issues, etc. Would I likely be able to use this computer to its fullest with...

Q: Nvidia driver not working on latest kernel (3.17) and Ubuntu 14.04

EchowsI'm pretty new to kernel hacking. However, I have built my own kernel before (3.16) and it works. Now I tried upgrading to the latest kernel (3.17-rc7). I configure the kernel using the config file that has worked with my previous kernel (make olddefconfig) and build it with make-kpkg -j4 --ini...

Q: Why doesn't Ctrl+R do anything in Ubuntu's terminal?

intelli78The keystroke Ctrl+R is important to me because it's the redo command in vim. However, it seems to do nothing at all in Ubuntu's terminal. When I press Ctrl+V and then Ctrl+R, nothing is registered at all. And it does nothing in vim. Any ideas what's going on? It's a vanilla Ubuntu installation.

Q: How to safely remove proprietary Intel driver

RPi AwesomenessI recently installed the proprietary Intel drivers for my Toshiba Satellite A105 s4284 running Ubuntu 14.10. Nouveau was working just fine, I was just attempting to make it so that I was able to run CS:S (no need for explanation on that.) Long story short, I went and downloaded the Intel Graphic...

Bother proprietary software :P
Screw you Comcast

I'm not really sure why you installed that...

@RPiAwesomeness Assuming you haven't uninstalled the original drivers (whatever they were), I think it should be safe to just uninstall the Intel drivers. As for how to do so, have you tried removing the package that installed them? There may be a package deinstallation script that also uninstalls the drivers that were automatically downloaded and installed as part of the package's installation script.

@Seth Shoot, was that wrong?
@EliahKagan I don't think I have, I'm trying to uninstall the package now

@RPiAwesomeness Well, unless you have Intel graphics, the Intel drivers wouldn't help. They don't apply to Nvidia GPUs.

8:05 PM
@EliahKagan I do have Intel. I'm on a laptop w. a T2050 Core Duo CPU w. Integrated graphics

@RPiAwesomeness In that case, I don't think it was necessarily wrong to install them. But if they're causing you problems, removing them may help.

@EliahKagan Exactly. What I need to know is how remove them :P

@RPiAwesomeness from what you just said, no.

I tried running sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg but nothing happened

@RPiAwesomeness Yeah I'd try removing the package that installed them, first. (That's what you're doing now, right?)

8:07 PM
Yeah, just did
Reboot?

@RPiAwesomeness My guess is that a reboot is the easiest way to proceed, yes.
Good luck! :)

[Unrelated] This question is about a very weird (or weird-seeming to me) problem where the output of a build appears to have a particular name, but can't be run or found by ls under that name, but it doesn't seem to contain unprintable control characters and renaming it in Nautilus doesn't change anything. Does anyone have any ideas? (Troubleshooting is somewhat complicated by info provided as images instead of copied and pasted text, but I think my problem description is accurate.)

Q: why can the terminal not find my executable

System.ObjectHey all i have been experimenting with make and Ubuntu 14.04 in order to automate the build i have created 2 simple programs test2.exe test2.c #include <stdio.h> int main() { printf("%s","Built using make"); return 0; } and test.exe main.c extern int print(); int _start() { ...

Btw should this other question be considered off-topic now that it looks like a Windows problem that's not specifically affecting file-sharing between Windows and Ubuntu (but also between two Windows systems)?

@RPiAwesomeness remove the source from your sources then: askubuntu.com/a/405453/47291

@EliahKagan Okay, I'm back

8:13 PM
I did that after installing the newer ones on two netbooks, and had slow effects just like you

@Mateo Intel?

yep

So...I do what?
Remove Intel from sources...

because they are just newer packages then in the repositries, just removing the source won't downgrade them
then:

@Mateo And downgrading fixed it?

8:15 PM
touch /tmp/a_p
nano /tmp/a_p
paste the block of text he had

which was:
Package: *
Pin: release a=*-backports
Pin-Priority: 100

Package: *
Pin: release n=*
Pin-Priority: 1001
save that file

I have got to stop pressing Alt-Tab. The lag is horrible

sudo apt-get -o Dir::Etc::Preferences=/tmp/a_p dist-upgrade

and waiting for downloads
@Mateo Once I do this, do you know if Nouveau and Intel might be conflicting at all?

8:17 PM
it should just downgrade the things missing

Okay...
waiting...waiting...

@RPiAwesomeness so I don't know...

libdv-bin libsynfig0 osspd osspd-pulseaudio synfig-examples
That's all the ones that downloaded
I think libdv-bin is related to video...
Shoot...I think I just screwed my system over handily

if you used the intel graphics installer, it probally upgraded some things as well

I think so, though I don't know what

8:20 PM
that is where the answer I showed you comes in

One thing that is supposed to be being DOWNGRADED is glc, but that's returning an error...
dpkg -l | grep intel
ii intel-gpu-tools 1.7-1 i386 tools for debugging the Intel graphics driver
ii libdrm-intel1:i386 2.4.54-1 i386 Userspace interface to intel-specific kernel DRM services -- runtime
ii libegl1-mesa:i386 10.2.2-0intel1 i386 free implementation of the EGL API -- runtime
Argh. This isn't something I want to be messing with right now ;P
@Seth You removed all the comments on my question?

did you find the repisitory intel installed and remove it?
software center -> edit -> software sources -> other software
the address should be from something like: download.01.org

nope...
facepalm

do that, then do the other thing I said
basically it pins all the packages temporally so that the things that are no longer in sources can get downgraded

Ah
Aha!
It be doing something w. Intel, Mesa, and whatnot

8:29 PM
too bad they didn't use a ppa...

The following NEW packages will be installed:
  libmirclient-dev libmirprotobuf-dev libprotobuf-dev libprotobuf-lite8
  mircommon-dev
The following packages will be DOWNGRADED:
  glc i965-va-driver intel-gpu-tools libdrm-dev libdrm-intel1 libdrm-nouveau2
  libdrm-radeon1 libdrm2 libegl1-mesa libegl1-mesa-dev libegl1-mesa-drivers
  libgbm1 libgl1-mesa-dev libgl1-mesa-dri libgl1-mesa-glx libglapi-mesa
  libgles1-mesa libgles2-mesa libgles2-mesa-dev libopenvg1-mesa libosmesa6
  libva-drm1 libva-egl1 libva-glx1 libva-tpi1 libva-wayland1 libva-x11-1
:D
let's hope this resolves it...

otherwise you could just do ppa purge :)

Of course

but... sadly they didn't

1 min 17s
Once this is done, I reboot, correct?
Reboots, reboots, reboots.

8:30 PM
yep, and if it works I'll do a write up

@Mateo Heck, me too :D
@Mateo BTW, have you ever played Counter Strike Source on Linux?

nope
is it fun

Yeah, just wondering, cause that's why I installed proprietary drivers
I was getting an error and one solution that seemed pretty popular suggested doing so

well... with intel those were just newer versions of the open source ones, that and maybe Ubuntu is starting to add extra stuff to make unity better

fuuuuuuudge
Errors were encountered while processing:
 /var/cache/apt/archives/glc_0.5.8-1~getdeb1_i386.deb
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
Did that affect the other packages?

8:34 PM
hm
just keep going, try a apt-get update then upgrade if it is done
might need to do the -f to fix some things

well....dpkg -l | grep intel returns the right version of drivers...

hm, time to reboot and cross fingers?

Cross fingers? I'm gonna be crossing fingers, toes, eyeballs, arms, legs, and whatnot
apt-get -f upgrade went fine...reboot number 3

what ever you do don't install xorg-edgers ppa, even if it is a popular answer ;)

unless you are happy manually fixing things from tty, or starting from scratch in-case something goes wrong

@Mateo Are you kidding? Noo way
However, it works!

8:42 PM
woo!

@Mateo Props and Internet points to you mon ami!

And a cookie, but don't tell anyone

ok, I'll post an answer then, mmmm cookies.

@Mateo And I will accept said answer :D

Q: My cloud server came with PermitRootLogin without-password, is it normal?

Simon PaquetI was just wondering if it is normal that in the Ubuntu 14 provided by my cloud hosting company,there is this configuration in the file /etc/ssh/sshd_config : PermitRootLogin without-password instead of PermitRootLogin yes Therefore, it means that you have to use the build in console to log...

Okay, just had a great idea for chat. We need to implement the ability to do something like tags ()
but for badges

8:44 PM
ah, cool idea

Like, [badge:COLORHEREFORCUSTOM:title]
Or, if we had an actual badge, we could do it [badge:CivicDuty]
I have another project to add to my list.
Not sure, but I think the Intel drivers might be faster...

intel only has the open source ones

Bah
@Mateo Well, yeah. Intel drivers
Sigh...
It sucks there aren't more games ported to Linux...

they just updated them, but they don't like unity users for some reason...

I've got a ton that I want to try, but they're only for Windows.
Can't decide if I should keep Win XP around just for gaming or not...
I'm not spending $80+ on something I'm only going to use for gaming

8:49 PM
@RPiAwesomeness I removed my comments, they stemmed from a simple misunderstanding on my part and figured they weren't useful. If you think otherwise I can undelete them.

that is why a lot of people dual boot

@Seth No, no. It's fine :) I was just curious

Cool :)

What does everyone use for an email client on Ubuntu?
I've tried both Geary and Thunderbird and can't decide
Geary looks nicer, but I think Thunderbird has more functionality...

I use pinned tabs in Firefox, personally.
I never could get used to an email client.

8:54 PM
@Seth Interesting idea...

I wonder.. Have you tried the Unity webapps? I'm not really sure what they do anymore, but it might be kind of a cross between browser/client.

Hammerwatch doesn't work :(
@Seth I haven't tried the Gmail one...

@RPiAwesomeness ok, got one up

Danke! Marked as such :D

later off to play games :)

8:59 PM
Huh...I can hear the Hammerwatch sound...but no visuals
Boo, I liked that game
I definitely need to finish my new PC
Yeah. Unity app only seems to work for viewing email, not responding. I'm liking Geary...
Also, trying to decide whether to spend $115 on a GPU or to wait is hard
really hard

9:18 PM
So guys, I'm sure many of you (some of you?) have heard of the Smoke Detector project for catching spam questions as they come in and reporting them to chat. Undo recently added a feature that allows us to send only posts specific to a certain site to a room. Is that something you guys would be interested in having here?
This is an example of some of the things it would catch. I was thinking of turning off the all caps title one and just posting the bad keyword ones, since those are almost always spam on our site.

10:00 PM
@RPiAwesomeness Wait is always the better option while sounder minds prevail...

@Seth probably be more interesting/useful than the u&l question bot

^^ and that
anyone think i'm coming out of left field here? askubuntu.com/questions/531573/…

looks fine to me.
@Mateo I don't expect it to post that much, but I think it should really help kick spam out faster. Most spam posts I deal with are only 1 or two flags away from being burned automatically.
