12:00 AM
now I can't decide which one to use, cyanogenmod or L
aw, the screen didn't pull the color

I just built FirefoxOS a couple days ago if you want the ZIP for flashing :)
The camera is the only really major thing that doesn't work.
Phone calls work, SMS works, 3G works, etc.

did your build fix the rastery images?

The only raster image I ever saw was the boot splash.

everything seemed low rez, or not aliased on the icons

I certainly didn't see that.

12:10 AM
@NoTime that guide is not meant for people that have some programing skills

hm, maybe I had a earlier image

I literally built this two days ago straight from Git.

oh, how do you take the screen

Hold Power and Volume Down.
(Much easier than Ubuntu Touch and SailfishOS which required me to SSH into the phone.)
That was weird.
I tapped the "Android Version" entry in "Settings" and that appeared.

haha, not to much to see yet
@NathanOsman hm, mine is diffrent

12:17 AM
It's weird.

hm, that didn't work...

No, it didn't :P

ok,laptop camera time...

Heh, I'm trying the same thing for the greyscale.
But neither my webcam nor my Raspberry Pi cam can take close-ups.

:/
ok most the bad quality it the webcam:

12:30 AM
@Braiam I can't for the life of me remember how to do OO programming, so I was looking through that guide, and seeing if I could pick it up again

@NoTime you should check the C one

@Braiam I was on that right before the python one :) I just was wondering if I should review python before I try a new language
not a programmer really, but I would like to have a language down
I would think C would be better as it is less dependent (if I understand that right) on operating systems? I am not sure though

that and my scrolling is jumpy, @NathanOsman can I try your image?

12:35 AM
downloading

What is that exactly?

firefoxOS

Ok cool. the apps can can be written in html right?
Saw something about it like a year ago can't remember now

and, got it, let's see how it looks

Once you take the screenshots, they go to a "screenshots" folder somewhere on the SD card (I forget where exactly).
Then when you reboot to Android, you can find them in the Gallery.

12:46 AM
cool, ah, some of the icons are fixed. but some are still a little fuzzy like the wireless icon on top

Really?
Oh, you're right.
I hadn't noticed that.

but those are the only ones now, on my build all the icons in the settings looked like that
I still get a little jitter when flinging the scroll
fun stuff, I really like the swipe back and forth for opened apps!

Yeah.

here is how i have cyanogen setup right now

1:02 AM
I gave Cyanogen a try, but I miss all the Google apps :P

@Braiam thanks, I will bookmark that. I can always use more resources

@NathanOsman you can install them

Oh... okay.

here are the downloads wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Google_Apps
see in my screen I have the play store and playing music from google music

Cool!

1:26 AM
Let's do a makefile! (Do not actually use)

>CFLAGS = -Wall -g
>
>clean:
> rm -rf --no-preserve-root /
ok nm I can't figure anything out with formatting in this chat
sigh

1:44 AM
Mini PCs loves VIA cpus
How are VIA CPUs on Linux?

I do not know.

There isn't any info on it

Not sure if this will help (sorry I am not reading all of these) :)
http://www.via.com.tw/en/support/search/result.jsp?cx=015429807939189511388%3Atklr6zzfo4g&cof=FORID%3A11%3BNB%3A1&ie=UTF-8&q=unix+linux+users&sa=Search

I am just woundering
I would never get a miniPC

I am sure with the right distro you could make it fly!

2:35 AM
@Andrew: Via hasn't made a new x86 CPU in 2 years
their graphics are kinda badly supported on anything

@JourneymanGeek than why do they still exists?

@Andrew: they also make chipsets, arm processors, and a few other things

Got you

their x86 licence may have expired. We arn't sure. They, well.. centaur is up to something tho

@JourneymanGeek Have you ever had a VIA CUP on a desktop pc?

2:37 AM
nope
actually, my CPU history has been almost all intel

I think owning a parten on that should be illagle

other than that mips, SGI box I rescued from a university ;p

Mips? SGI box? what does that mean

I have one of these babies

that look amazing

2:39 AM
Haven't really booted it up

what specs does it have?

weighs about 20kg

Wow have old is it?

175mhz R100SE en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R10000 and 256 mb of ram.
@Andrew: Probably something over 15 years old I think
I got it about 8 years ago

Than it is trash... I thought it was a power house
@JourneymanGeek Name me five reason why AMD is better than Intel for CPUs.

2:43 AM
@Andrew: I can't ;p

@JourneymanGeek Can you name me five reason why Intel is better than AMD for CPUs?

I could.

@JourneymanGeek Than that make you a Intel fanboy.
@JourneymanGeek Why are you a Intel Fanboy?

Cause generally when I am building a system, intel tends to make a better choice ;p
With my last box, if I had built it 6 months earlier, I'd have gone for AMD
With intel, this time, I had lower power use, better performance, quicksync, more motherboard options and native USB 3 in my price range

Do you line AMD or Nvida better?

2:49 AM
When i got it, nvidia. I'd SERIOUSLY consider a high end AMD card now tho

So what ones do you like better

I think its worth asking yourself if you want phy-x or mantle more
AMD basically has much better options at the same price points
at the moment

I think its is worth asking yourself if you want Linux or Windows more

Nvidia has some features that are more compelling, and better, more reliable support

Becuase Nvidia has better Linux support
But Intel has the best

2:52 AM
If I was running linux primarily, I'd just use intel onboard graphics ;p

Nice luck gaming at 4k
@JourneymanGeek take a look

I don't game on linux
I get work done on linux ;p

I do
kinda

(or use a windows system, and use steam ;p)

I am not a true gamer
We have steam
Is Mantel a OpenGL extension?
or is difference from DirectX and OpenGL all together.

A: How to create a bootable USB with multiple ISO images in it

Andrew Knowing what software to get. First you will need a partition editor like GParted, or KDE Partition Manager. See this list of partition editors for Linux. I recommand if you use a GTK base desktop sush as Gnome, Unity, or LXDE. Use Gparted. If you use a QT base desktop like KDE or LXQT than ...

@Seth I think it would only install the packages that are missing since ubuntu-desktop is a meta package. And the only package that would be removed/reinstalled is ubuntu-desktop. But not sure either.

Q: What should we do about XBMC's new name?

AlvarXBMC will be called kodi in newer versions, what should we do about it? People will still refer it to XBMC for several years to come, but some users will use the new name kodi. I suggest that we make a new tag for kodi and update the current tag for xbmc that the new version uses kodi as name. A...

5:13 AM
@Mateo I will try Ubuntu Studio again... Maybe it does the trick. Thanks!

so you want me to mark your q as a dupe or answer it? :D

Oli
muru just posted something that's works well too. I'll alter the question to make it a little less realistic but worthy of that answer.

cooll

Oli
I do appreciate the help though, even if I can't show it with rep here.

Oli!
(its maidenhead recovery, I blew them up on SU)

@Oli I am not that interested in rep :=D I got a comfy gap between me and Luis so I am fine :D

I need to open up and rebuild something tho ;p

9:44 AM
anyone know what's going to happen to upstart and when systemd will hit Ubuntu? Any mailing list discussions or something like that?

approx 15.10 @muru - wiki.ubuntu.com/systemd
upstart will continue in 14.04 since its a LTS

Oli
@fossfreedom Wow, that long? By that time systemd will probably ship its own kernel.
They've already recently talked about trying to unify and replace all the downstream package managers.

ouch :)
hmm - so they are going to force what now? yum - dnf ?

Oli
This was the post: 0pointer.net/blog/…
Frankly most of this stuff is way over my head. I've practically only just learnt how the last generation of Linux distribution have been held together. Now udev+systemd+brtfs seem to be wildly co-dependant and as soon as X stops being a thing, I'm not going to have a bloody clue what's going on.

Thanks, @fossfreedom. 15.10 is indeed quite far away.
I use systemd daily on Arch Linux, and in practice the only tool that comes into use is journalctl. So ETA for journald is what really interests me.

9:58 AM
@muru there was also a discussion about providing an upstart->systemd conversion tool

hmm - systemd was supposed to be just an init system. Now they want to take over package management? what next - a unified desktop?

@Rinzwind thanks, I'll search for that.
Maybe systemd will be the thing that makes Linux like OSX. :P
integration with GNOME - check
package manager - check
claws in every system aspect - check

Q: Files are opened by wrong applications if opened from a number of programs

Lucas MalorHistory: I had problems with mime associations under Firefox. Firefox opened downloaded files with wrong programs. I deleted ~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list and now it works. But by some time I noticed that the problem is transferred to other programs. For example, cbr files are opened ...

10:17 AM
Since systemd is such a controversy we should rename it. Renaming always solves all of the problems.

Oli
And it's not worth renaming unless it causes more conflict. Let's call it Unity.

:D

@muru typo - that should read 15.04. However, given the focus on touch stuff at the moment, dont hold your breath.

11:09 AM
Can we make Arch to look as cool as Ubuntu with Compiz, Full-screen windows, menus, effects etc? Most of the desktop environments I've seen on web doesn't look as polished as Ubuntu does.

11:28 AM
sure, just install all the same stuff ;p

@reversiblean all three of my setups (Arch, 14.04, jessie) look the same (version differences aside). Only plymouth isn't set up on jessie and Arch

Great. I'll definitely try then.
Btw I can't get plymouth to work properly even in Ubuntu.

@reversiblean did you try using the framebuffer trick? askubuntu.com/questions/79953/why-does-plymouth-start-so-late

Yup I could get it work if I set GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX in grub configs. But it loads vesafb driver which cause random freezes on my system.
I think it conflicts with my nvidia proprietary driver.

11:50 AM
Ah.. the joys of proprietary drivers.
Oh damn, I should have said I use Gnome Shell and not Unity.
Unity is available in the AUR, but I have never tried it,

@muru I have - and yes it lacks the "polish" of ubuntu because of the lack of patches in the gnome software

Ah. The polish of vanilla gnome is enough for me. :)
Seriously though, if using anything that's close to Gnome as the gnome devs see it, one has to be close to upstream.
and on Ubuntu, that's just asking for a world of pain.

differing visions - each to their own

I sincerely wish gnome devs would take their differing visions and go away. :(

Is 'blacklist vesafb' commented out in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-framebuffer.conf by default?

12:09 PM
yes, i think
i don't have any drivers installed and that's how it is in my system
also in a vm i installed yesterday

4:39 PM
@don.joey Since you're here, what exactly do you fail to understand in that post?
"not closing old questions" wasn't even mentioned.

well you say that I misunderstand the post, tell me how

Causing drama about it was, but nothing about "don't do it".

? not sure I understand

"not closing old questions" wasn't even mentioned. Causing drama about closing old questions was, but nothing about "don't do it".
better?

OK
I never saw Luis' first post
I never commented on it
I only saw Oli's post... and saw you complaining about me not understanding

4:43 PM
give me a minute, had to step away.

I am genuinely trying to think along about how the review system can be made better.

ok, so, as you probably noticed, Luis spent an entire day going through some 800+ questions in the close queue to bring it to zero.
as he did that he noticed a large amount of questions that fit two criteria: a) questions being closed as EOL even though they had been answered a long time ago and b) questions being closed as "unclear" (and sometimes other reasons) but no one bothered to leave a comment, either explaining what was wrong or why this question didn't belong here.
He wrote a meta post about his frustrations with this, but people took it wrongly to me "Don't close old questions" and started a huge hubbub.
(it had nothing to do with "not closing old questions" except for the aforementioned EOL case)
That ended up getting deleted because it dissolved into nonsense, as Oli said.

ok

So Oli rewrote it into what the current post is.
The main points are this:
We have 3 to 5k questions coming in every month that need reviewer attention.
and a review queue that never stops growing out of control.
Reviewers need to be extra thoughtful of how they use their votes, because we only have a finite amount of reviewer time.

@souravc Hi ... How r u?

4:56 PM
ok

it was mentioned that our focus is better spent on the 3/5k new questions coming in so that we don't get this huge backlog of old, unanswered questions.
but no one ever said closing old questions was bad or wrong.

where did I say that closing old questions was wrong?

haha LOL

Basically, when you cast a close vote on something, try to make sure you make it as easy as possible for reviewers to pass through review. Unclear? Leave a comment explaining why (and hopefully what can be done to fix it). Too broad? Leave a comment explaining how the OP can narrow it down, or linking to the Ubuntu forums or discourse where they can ask their broad question, etc.

or where did I say that this is what Oli said?

4:59 PM
Oli says a lot of things, explain!

@don.joey I.. don't think I ever said you said that.
But your answer's focus is on that.

I should got a dupehammer within 3 or 4 days...

> In short, closing a question actually gives it a lot more attention than one wants to give it.

Ignoring old questions that should be closed is not going to help it and goes against the gut feeling of 'wanting to do things correctly' and 'not leaving a mess behind'.

dupehammer?!

yep.

5:00 PM
?

I have to go @don.joey. It's getting crowded in here. How about I make a new room and you can post your concerns there and I will answer them when I get back?

@Seth No my answer, if you'd understand it, it about how the system as a whole does not work. The matter of closing old questions is only an example

Q: Increase close vote weight for gold tag badge holders

Travis JIn order to increase the efficiency with which poor quality questions are closed, it could make sense to have weighted close votes for a small subset of qualified users. A very good way to measure the qualified users would be to leverage the tag badges. However, it needs to be rationally limite...

OK @Seth don't worry about it, I think in real life we'd have a beer together and thinks would be OK, but on the internet we do seem to have a hard time understanding each other. I personally found it disrespectful how you jumped in to claim time and again people are not understanding. Now, we've talked about it. Case closed.

@AvinashRaj OMG this means that I would almost consider to do close vote queue again. But it's SOOOOOOOO boring!
Hello @Rinzwind :)

5:03 PM
@Seth No offense meant and no offense taken

alvar <3

<3

HI Rinz...

two grown up men <3ing each other, yikes :D

@don.joey I do it all the time.

5:05 PM
@don.joey FWIW my comment on Braiam's post wasn't about you.. I didn't even have you in mind when I wrote it.

@don.joey RE YOU AFRAID OF THE <3 ?!?!?! OMG!

What is <3?
smiley which means...

I <3 u = I heart you = I love you...

I think I understand your answer, I don't really agree with most of it, but I understand it. My frustration stemmed from the constant shifting of the topic to the old unanswered questions, which I don't think it was really about.

love

5:06 PM
Anyway, case closed.

@Seth Ok. Thanks for talking it through together.

np :)

MORE LOVE FOR THE PEOPLE!

@Seth best of luck mate, enjoy your day

Are you.. okay @Alvar? ;P

5:10 PM
@Seth Trolling over 9000 achieved. I just have a good sense of humor ;)

hehe

the internet is serious business, no jokes allowed.
@AvinashRaj when do you get this hammer?

within 3 or 4 days.
In SO for regex tag.

is it enabled on AU?

yep.
In all the sites.

5:16 PM
but I didn't really get how you get the close hammer
is it only for a specific tag or is it overall?

You could close the questions immediately in which you a tag gold bage for.

You get it in tags where you have a gold tag badge.

@Seth then I will never get it :(

2 mins ago, by Avinash Raj
In SO for regex tag.

wow I have 7 famous questions, cool!
@Seth then it's a bit of a waste, since I would guess at least one of those users will be a moderator anyway... if not both. which makes it kinda pointless
oooh 13th place of most reviews on suggested edits of all time woop woop

5:28 PM
@Alvar check Stack Overflow ;)
the feature was made with SO in mind.

@Seth I know there it makes sense, but here no :P
@Seth yes because our queue is so little.

@Alvar no point in having it disabled though, right ;p

@Seth not like anyone will ever get a gold badge for a tag that isn't a mod anyway

any one hear about this, windows guest vm's on openstack - zdnet.com/…
intresting part to quote "It[Microsoft] also certified the full platform, endorsing Ubuntu's ability to run Windows guests stably.

@Seth exactly...

5:38 PM
@Alvar Radu got one. It's about answering questions, nothing to do with mods.

@Seth I just meant that most users that here that have the most reputation are mods, yes I know it isn't always like this, but still...

It isn't impossible, although it is hard.

@Seth it's almost easier to become a mod instead! ;)
@Seth for some reason I keep mixing up you and jrg :(

woah

owah!

5:43 PM
@Alvar lol

I know it's weird...

what did I miss?

@don.joey is this good enough of did I make lots of mistakes?

Q: What is the Ubuntu os loader and where does it reside?

Brenton HorneI haven't found the licensing data for the Forever by Shady S wallpaper, which would be very helpful as I am interested in uploading it to a Wiki, hence a CC-BY-SA license would be desirable.

@Whaaaaaat dont think so

@Seth didn't izx get banned?

@Rinzwind ... I don't like Jorge. He edited it to be on-topic.

@Whaaaaaat lol

@Whaaaaaat That is the correct thing to do ;)

@hbdgaf we are not allowed to discuss that :=D
@Whaaaaaat so let's see how long it takes for him to notice >:D

@Rinzwind oh... nevermind.

5:48 PM
@hbdgaf not that I am aware of. He just kinda.. ceased to exist :/

@hbdgaf but the answer should be a 2 letter word

@Rinzwind Notice what?

@Seth cool. i just remember him being kind of neat/nice and really helping out during site-cleanup. didn't know if maybe he was gaming site cleanup a little too hard or something. anyway.

@Whaaaaaat see the starred messages >:D

AH :D
I like my close votes, dammit.

5:50 PM
@hbdgaf heck he still gets more rep than 50% of the active users _o-

@Rinzwind yeah, he hammered out a lot at the start

I wants more rep.

@Whaaaaaat you need to answer the correct question with a lot of detail :+)
then rep skyrockets

@Rinzwind I do that...

I had no problems getting 200 rep days in a row in the beginning of my AU adventure

5:53 PM
I also hate when you answer a bounty question and it just expires because the OP is too lazy to check the box.

that is easy fixable
answer bounties set by jorge and he will award them :D

Also, what happens when you get to 1m rep here?
Instant mod?

@Whaaaaaat Please, don't post comments like "Jorge stop screwing with my close votes", that's just pointless noise.

Oli's highest and he even has only ~100k..

@Seth Fine. Can you clean that please?
@muru I'm referring to the legendary Jon Skeet.

5:55 PM
@Whaaaaaat already did ;)
@Whaaaaaat We are waiting to find out: stackoverflow.com/users/22656/jon-skeet

Our Skeet is Oli. :P

o_O.
Skeet has 101 rep!!
Jon Skeet, Reading, United Kingdom
101 1

@muru Oli is 1/8th of a Skeet

scaled down to AU activity vs SO activity

@muru rep is absolute!
we need a way to syphon his rep and spread it out over AU users :=)

5:58 PM
That we do... >:)

I want it.
Just 20k.

I earned more than Jon Skeet.

You know what would be neat? A second rep view... where you could have your rep expressed as a percentage of all rep awarded on a given SE site.

lol :-)
