and the anger came out
@hbdgaf you should transfer Super <-> Del

oh noes...
i'm not angry. in point of fact, i'm forking lots of stuff and submitting pull requests. it's just that i don't really care if 2.x keeps working as long as 3.x works. so, i'm being a little obtuse in my own way, but it makes sense.

the things, there should be someone that joins all the pieces to make easy user life
@hbdgaf at this time, if you're writing and focusing to get 2.x working, you're doing it wrong

i agree. the problem i run in to is everyone goes "well it works for what i need it for..." and i'm like "i'm so sorry you're not maintaining it any more"

I see
honeybadger, the forker honeybadger

example, last weekend i tried to code-sprint xdot to py3k. didn't make it, but i did make some progress. not sure if it's easier to do that, or use the html5 canvas viewer and a webkit instance. undecided. i'll do one or the other next weekend.

@Lucio what is this?

@Lucio Thank you!!!!!

I am unsure how/when I would use this what does this do? @Richard

Im reading the readme, and the comments ## inside
Ok, so backing up any file with '??' name inside, and creating dir if not,
like grepping from a cp, then sed touch dir and backups?

@NoTime rather... just something of a shortcut
as it were

4:16 AM
instead of running through the stream of with sed, and grep and doing a complicated shell line right?
i think his is pretty good, I do something similar with a program (built in python) but no backups for replacing names in a lot of files
I mean his is good
github.com/no-time/rename is the python one i made that is simple tho
@Richard if you want to look at it

@NoTime yes... that also seems very useful if I'd rather skip the backups

How i get the ruby interpreter on Ubuntu?

Rooooooooooland!!! Hi \o/

@Takkat if we ignore him he might go again :=D

I left out of frustration actually.

i installed ruby through
\curl -sSL get.rvm.io | bash -s stable --ruby
command.

7:09 AM
@Rinzwind: you might know that... my dad decided he needs a new computer to replace his XP. Will he (85) manage the switch to Windows7, or is Ubuntu a better option?

What i have to do to get the ruby interpreter?

What must one do to get Samba to work?!

Samba just works on my machines... :/

Not for me.

To get the python interpreter we need to run python command on terminal. Likewise is there any command for ruby.

7:11 AM
I have three laptops - not one of them works with Samba.
Even this new one.
Samba is accursed!

@RolandiXor the only issue I had some time ago was that the daemon was not running.

@Takkat can't answer that... my mother is 70-ish but she had NO prior computer knowledge. She does not want anything else than Ubuntu _O-

I get this:

@Rinzwind such it was with my mum... thing is I can't support 7 - I think he should stick to XP...

if he is used to XP he will be used to MS methods and software. What would mean you will keep on excusing yourself for Ubuntu not being able to install software X cuz it is named Y in Ubuntu
I'd go with W7 if that is going to happen
W7 is not that different than XP. Just the front end is
(behind the scene or when you go into setting etc. it all looks the same :P )

7:16 AM
plz someone help me..

@Rinzwind that was my thinking too... he does not tweak much. But he always was annoyed about the confusing Virus Scanner updates. I think he turned them all off :/

@Takkat good! those are fake anyways.

lol

What i have to do to get the ruby interpreter?

last thing he said was: if nobody uses XP anymore, who should code a virus then?

@Rinzwind never! (Zod voice)

let him write down WHAT he does with the computer. If it is browse, music, video, mail, write documents and a bit of Excell.... Ubuntu will work for him,
Even games-wise he could use Ubuntu if he games those basic games (the no DX ones like sudoku or chess)

he's running windows?
3 words.

Only thing you need to do is put the icons on the launcher and he does not even have to search for the programsx.

Limited. User. Account.

(and heh, I am getting a system setup with a linux gui to get myself back up to date)

@RolandiXor it may be some non-parsable network name, or the daemon not running, or... sighs .. so many possibilities.

I think Lucio knows the answer.

@Takkat exactly why samba sucks.

7:22 AM

Hi
can i create and sell customized linux distros based on ubuntu?

7:14 PM
Samba should be removed from Ubuntu, since there is no intention of having it work.
Open source does not have to mean broken, and when it does, we should abandon it.

@xiaodongjie I am not a copyright expert, but as long as you do make the source available, and use Canonical IP (trademarks, logos, etc.) with their permission, you can sell your derivatives of Ubuntu.
@xiaodongjie see ubuntu.com/about/about-ubuntu/licensing and ubuntu.com/legal/terms-and-policies/…, specifically section2 in the second link

@RolandiXor samba isn't awful and intentionally broken... there are people that have nice utilities to manage it mostly. there's a nice turnkey box turnkeylinux.org/domain-controller ... It's just that it's a beast to get working the first time.
Anyone ever want to start a sock named "Ain't got no time fo dis", and go and leave a comment on every post by all the "Notime"/"Zerotime"/similar users? <--- I'm not going to do it. I'm just saying it would make me chuckle a little if someone did.

Been a bit busy the last couple of days.

ahoy
@Seth starting going back and forth between i3 and xfce. i think i like applets. i might follow that "keep the xfce top bar, but replace the window manager with i3" tutorial i found the other day

There is a taskel job for Ubuntu-desktop? — Seth ♦ 10 secs ago
@hbdgaf xfce is pretty customizable, isn't it? Sounds cool.
I usually just stick with the default (Unity) but xfce would be my next choice. Never tried i3, but I've heard good things about it.

Anything is customizable if you're willing to beat it in to submission, but it doesn't take as much effort with more minimal DEs since they don't make as many assumptions.
And on i3, you either love it or hate it. I think I love it, I just want a few applets.
@Seth why whouldn't you just install the realtime kernel package on desktop instead of the other way around?

9:00 PM
i3 is pretty awesome when you want minimal. I have an Arch install using i3. You can set up tabs for each of your major apps, especially good when using on small screens

I like the dynamic desktop creation aspect too... and the splitting tiles for when I want multiple terminals and some web browser. It's like a WM that subsumes terminator

Yeah. There's still a lot I need to learn about it, but between the arch wiki and the i3 manual, I got a pretty good setup. Nice and light for my atom netbook.
Oh, and one of those pages linked to a blog with a nice config file to build from.

I started with the base config. I'm still launching everything from a terminal and switching to tabbed mode. This way is lame. I need to add some app shortcuts.
Ahh dobey read my mind
Is there any reason you didn't just install Ubuntu 14.04 instead of Ubuntu Studio then? You can just install linux-image-lowlatency to get the low latency kernel. — dobey 7 mins ago

arch + xfce is also very light and fast on the netbook. Probably a better balance between speed and function than lubuntu

conceptually i like arch, but if i'm going to jump in naked, i'ld rather run BSD when the drivers catch up to this laptop
archbang seems a nice half-way in the middle. i may try that at some point

9:15 PM
although the rumors of arch as a DIY distro are way overblown. it's not Gentoo. Everthing is binary and easy. You just need to watch the update info and make sure there's no conflict with something you really need.

I haven't tried it yet. It sounded closer to ports tree than most linuces

I suppose it is. but except for packages in the AUR, everything is done for you, simlar to pc-bsd
that said, some apps you may think of as standard are only available in the AUR

That's neat. I might have to give it a shot on a vm or an lxc container.

the install guide is step-by-step or also try the archboot iso, which puts up a minimal scripted install that is also reminiscent of bsd.

It's on my list of things to do when I don't have to sleep or go to the day job :)

9:19 PM
so you mean you'll never do it? ;)

I might, it's just on my distant list.
I frequently send users here to the archwiki. It has great documentation.

you betcha. it's great

Okay Palin. >.>

lol, doncha know.

anyone else here read this? blog.torproject.org/blog/… - seems a little beat up that they stopped on july 4. seems like a false flag against US op
wait... i don't remember the not-redrawing chromium bug happening in i3, and some other people said it didn't happen in unity or some other DEs. maybe it's file-able as a bug in xfce, not a bug in chromium.

Q: Can use Password authentication with SFTP even though "PasswordAuthentication no" in /etc/ssh/sshd_config

However, to test the SSH login with Password authentication, I used the SFTP...

@hbdgaf no idea.

just a note for you seth, i think tasksel was supposed to be deprecated... it's not something i would recommend for future-proofing questions

oh really?

it's not installed by default in desktop

I hadn't heard that.
I'm not surprised. Will apt install it automatically if someone uses the caret? Or will it just fail?

9:44 PM
it seems like i read it somewhere, but i can't remember where and the first two pages of google are tasksel using deprecated packages. i could swear i read it was deprecated somewhere though.

On that answer you mentioned, tasksel doesn't require the caret anymore, and the metapackage has the same name as the task, so it resolves to an apt-get operation for the average user
I think apt in this case just uses the metapackage but I don't know about other task specifc packgages
I don't believe it's deprecated for server use

@chaskes ah cool. By doesn't require, does that mean you could just call the lamp task without the caret, and apt will get it (as long as there is no package with that name)?

IDK yet. I don't want to say something that turns out to be wrong
@Seth Things I find say apt-get use of tasksel tasks is undocumented. I would need to experiment.

wat
What do they mean by "undocumented" I wonder..

@Seth When there's no metapackage with the same name, you need to caret in order for apt-get to call the task.
Try sudo apt-get -s install lamp-server vs sudo apt-get -s install lamp-server^
This is a desktop without tasksel installed
Summary: if tasksel is installed, caret is optional in all cases. If tasksel is not installed, caret is required when task does not share name with a metapackage
Undocumented in the tasksel wiki seems to mean he couldn't find documentation; but undocumented in general means there's no contract implied - the behavior could change or vanish without warning.

9:57 PM
Sweet, thanks for testing @chaskes :)

@Seth At this point, it's what I live for. :)

undocumented means either "we don't support this... good luck" or "maybe nobody knows" - circa X11 man page
