Q: GUI on a UNIX server

Govinda KamathWe have a Ubuntu server (mainly a compute server), which does not have X-server installed on it. One can use something like Byobu or Screen to have programs running on the server even after the SSH connection is closed. However when one runs GUI based applications (using ssh -X), the application...

@Braiam Hi buddy. did you find any wrongly closed questions?

@LuisAlvarado I think it was just this one: askubuntu.com/questions/476524/…
Thanks for going through that queue though!
Wow. I would never be able to do that many in one sitting :P
Also, Hi!

hi seth
thanks for the reply, really tired now
want to finish any mistakes you guys found and then go to sleep

@LuisAlvarado I'm sure you are lol :)
@LuisAlvarado Don't worry about it, hard to not miss any in 800 reviews.
I think you deserve a nap now ;p

@LuisAlvarado actually this one askubuntu.com/q/502100/169736

@Braiam he is using linux mint, not ubuntu

2:26 AM
I just was curious why you voted to leave open
@LuisAlvarado exactly

@Braiam dont get it, then what is the problem with it? Is Linux mint officially supported now? Am i way blind to see the error?

@LuisAlvarado Probably a miss-click: askubuntu.com/review/close/297075

I know I missed a few too :/

well fyi, I am actually having horrible problems with my mouse
it double clicks or does not click when it wants

2:29 AM
@LuisAlvarado hehe, again?

Q: How to draw a single pixel in terminal?

Ionică BizăuUntil now I used characters to draw images, shapes etc in terminal. Is it possible to draw a single pixel? Let's say: foo 1 1 red This will draw a red pixel on (1, 1) coordinate. Currently running Ubuntu 14.04.

5:52 AM
Good (morning|afternoon|evening).

6:46 AM
Hi guyz
any active users

7:10 AM
what do you mean by active users?

<-- is inactive Hi everybody. :)

hey @Takkat long time

@mojo706 yeah - I'm too überbusy recently.

me too man I get it

we're still at 30% staff (of 5) here - leaves little time for more than occasional lurks and comments.

7:17 AM
you're hiring? :D

no I am the one left over... :(

lmao
@Rinzwind come out of the shadows I need thine aid

we can't hire, because the positions are not vacant (maternal leave, illnesses, etc.)

so sorry you have to pick up the slack but at least its for a reasonable cause

irrational reasons, I know. :)

7:21 AM
@Takkat know anything about Ubuntu Server?

yeah - it has no pulseaudio ;)
and it runs faster than light.

lol not that I mean configuring one

sorry no - server and networking things appear to be too complicated for me.

and @Rinzwind isn't nearby

<-- is happy when everything works - then there is rule #1: don't touch it again!
Rinz is too busy too I heard.

7:29 AM
he told me that Yesterday so I figured he'd be done

best work items are those that never disappear, at least when you make money from them.

what are you talking about?

No work - no money vs. much work - much money. But sometimes it is: little work - little money vs. much work - still little money :)

lol I get it. Everybody is looking for Little Work - Much Money including me

no work - much money FTW!

7:34 AM
@Takkat We got the same problem. We used to be with 8. 4 got fired. And this week out of the remaining 4 1 has a holiday and 1 was asked to be 2 weeks on site before going on holiday. So we are 2 with the workload of 8.

hahaha we leave that to the Queen

@Rinzwind sounds familiar :/

@Rinzwind sorry man. Hope it includes much money :D

nope

damn

7:35 AM
have not had a raise in 7 years

times are hard I haven't worked anywhere for 7 years. At least not yet

you should make a piece-work contract.

what is that?

7:52 AM
you get paid per item not per time
always better if you got many items in short time but it is not advisable in jobs where you spend much time waiting for the next item.

8:55 AM

hello, yesterday IIRC the review queue was > 1k. And today it's just one first post to review. what happened last night?

@Rinzwind dist-upgrade hell :) Throw the dice to see what breaks.

@SylvainPineau someone cleaned house :=)

@SylvainPineau there are rumors one of our mods did not sleep well tonight.

incredible work if it's not a bug

@Oli Luis should focus on catching me on reputation :=D
423 reviews and the #2 is on 23. :P
Maybe tell Luis next time to attack the 14k unanswered questions _O-
this can use some upvotes: askubuntu.com/a/409646/15811

9:24 AM
hey @Rinzwind quick question if I may
ok :(
ok scratch that

9:41 AM
hmm?
you can always ask >:-D

yess

almost time for me to get fed so I'd hurry if I was you :=)

I wanted to know, whether I can have me as major admin and other smaller admins
on Ubuntu server
the smaller "admins" can login using ssh and install stuff
do I need to give them sudo access?

ssh does not require sudo. it requires an ssh_key.
installation would require sudo though but you could add the command to the sudoers file and grant access to it

I can add apt-get install to sudoers file is that what you mean?

9:47 AM
here is a better method: http://askubuntu.com/questions/3/how-can-i-set-the-software-center-to-install-software-for-non-root-users
installation by non root users with policykit
that way your user needs to supply their password and apt-get from command line would work for a non-admin

thanks man in case of more questions I'll ping you you help when you get back

10:30 AM
what is this url ? http://spy.no-ip.biz/
It points to my apache default page and when i pinged, it points to 127.0.0.1.
Did google no related information found.
Any idea ?

10:58 AM
@ErrHunter It's been set up to always point to 127.0.0.1. That is your localhost IP.
WTF happened to the close queue? Did everyone do their homework all of a sudden?

Apparently Luis cleaned it out

@terdon see the stars!
seems odd to remove it after 1/2 a year

11:15 AM
@Rinzwind Jaysus! How is that even possible? >400 in one day? Do mods have no limits?
@Rinzwind Dunno, he's added a bounty to the question so presumably that's why.

11:28 AM
@terdon no?

@JourneymanGeek I wouldn't know, we never have enough review items for me to have come up against any limit on U&L.
^^^ SO,SU and AU mods, eat your hearts out :)

@terdon I wish he had not done it but attacked the "unanswered questions" queue >:D

@Rinzwind Yeah, but @Braiam is probably going to cry for joy :)

11:45 AM
how is that different from normal? @terdon :D :D

@terdon my side of the review queue always had 100 reviews less pending... I was miles away from most reviewers

@Braiam I know, you're one of the most conscientious reviewers I've seen on any site. Which is why I thought you'd be pleased by what Luis did. I meant that comment quite literally, no irony involved.

Oli
@Rinzwind That's a Canonical-owned and run domain name.
I don't disagree that this hateful little nugget shouldn't be hosing it all over the site, but I don't think it's spam.

12:02 PM
@terdon thank for the compliment... I suppose. that was a compliment right?
what I meant by my response was that actually the size of the queue doesn't really concern me, I'm more concerned about bad reviewers

@Braiam Absolutely, yes.

@Oli oh but the definition of spam is "a disruptive, esp. commercial message posted on a computer network or sent as e-mail." and that is what is is.
- "a" definition of spam ...

Oli
I usually require the commercial aspect of it to be there before I'll call it spam. This is just weak trolling.

last time Tim Post said trolling is spam

@Oli he wanted to sell windows 8 >:D

Q: Is there any support for mass link editing?

Jon SkeetMy old blog is no more. Existing links will (slowly) give a 404. I'm working on getting a new domain structure which I control, so that in the future I can put my own redirects in place etc, but I can't do that retrospectively with the old posts. When my new blog is up and running and I'm confid...

What is it with that guy?

he even regged under a name :=D

Oli
12:36 PM
@Rinzwind I love it when they register. Gives me something solid to suspend.

Any mods around? I flagged askubuntu.com/questions/501329/nfs-export-not-accessible as offtopic since it was a fairly generic Linux question and already answered at Unix & Linux. Should I flag it again, or add an answer?

@muru Why would you flag it twice? Have the mods responded to your flag?

Yes, it was declined.

Oli
@muru Answer it. It's on-topic enough.

Alright. :)

12:40 PM
@muru OK, I just saw the question, it's completely on topic, why would you flag it?

As I said, there's nothing Ubuntu specific, it could apply to an NFS server running on pretty much any Unix-like system

Oli
I wonder what Ask Ubuntu would be like if we only allowed Ubuntu specific questions on the site.

I wouldn't have flagged it if it hadn't been answered. WIsh I could flag for dupes across SE sites.

@muru yeah well there is this gray/grey area :D :D we are a Linux system and so is U+L so double questions are to be expected

@muru Cross-site dupes are not dupes, that's not a problem unless it's the same question by the same OP. Then, unless a question is specifically about another distribution, it is on topic here.

12:42 PM
Ah. Thanks for the advice. :)

Oh and @muru the /data/video is missing a digit at the device :)

@muru Eeek! Why? In fact, we often do the opposite, repeat good questions that would be on topic elsewhere. What we don't want is the exact same question by the same OP.

@Rinzwind true, I had noticed that and figured a typo in the question.
@terdon I just feel weird essentially doing copy-pasta.

@muru I never assume tupos >:D nothing funnier than leaving a comment when it is sooooo obvious :D
@muru copy/paste is always bad >:-D

:D

12:47 PM
not that I sometimes do not feel like being bad :=D

Yeah, but you can tweak a question/answer to the different audiences. For example, people here tend to go for GUI solutions while on U&L we like CLI.

@terdon lies!!!!! I know at least 5 people now in chat that favor command line >:D

@terdon through I've seen people re-ask the same UL question (which should have turned up just by googling the same title) on AU

@Rinzwind Well, d'uh! But them's all proper Linux geeks. That does not describe your average AU user as you well know.

lol the 1st 3, 4 months of my answers where mostly: copy+paste title into google. pick 1st result.

12:49 PM
@Braiam Yeah, I know who you mean. I am not sure how I feel about that but it's probably a good thing really.

well, I dv the question on the basis "no enough research" and move on
now I will make everyone jelly with my breakfast of sweet potato, fried cheese and sunside eggs :P

+1 muru :=D

@Oli It would be just questions about UI elements, which unfortunately seems to be how a lot of people interpret the guidelines.

@Rinzwind Thanks. :)

Oli
I guess there would be some Juju too

12:54 PM
By the way, can the Disks utility handle NFS?

we have plenty of Ubuntu/Canonical service questions on the site, that are not really ubuntu specific
LP just to make an example

Oli
@muru palimpsest ? I don't think so. I'll install it and see.
Hang on, has it been renamed?

It's called gnome-disks now, I think. It does offer a good way of handling fstab.
Sorry, gnome-disk-utility

@Oli oldbie!!! :D gnome-disk-utility
ah darn muru spotted the mistake :D

Oli
@muru It doesn't appear to know anything about my nfs mounts.
Or shares

12:59 PM
@Oli, ah. Pity. Only disks of some form then, I suppose.

@muru nope

Q: What is wrong with the command-line tag?

Registered UserA user is removing command-line tags from posts, for example this post. I'm a user who depends upon favorite tags to answer questions, and command-line is one of them. If the tag gets removed, I miss questions that I may answer. I don't find any problem with the tag, as is in the case of install...

@Braiam that is about you ^^ :=)

yeah, I will ignore it

good choice :-D

2:10 PM
people that doesn't know how to use a tag

do you have that discussion on that other meta site about this?

Dan
speaking of tags, is there a difference between "merging" two tags or making one a synonym of the other?

19
Q: When tags are merged, are followers merged too?

AcornWhen two tags are merged, are followers of the old tag moved onto the new tag? If not, should this happen? Or am I not understanding something about how the merging process works?

nobody knows

Dan
lol :D

well somebody will know but they chose to keep silent >:D

@Rinzwind good ol' interwebz

Q: I didn't receive the notification that I'd gained a badge

TimSo in my notification list, I have "You have earned the Curious badge'. But I received the Benefactor badge yesterday and I didn't get a notification for it. Why is this? Is it not meant to or is it a bug?

@AskUbuntuMeta another example that people don't really know how to use tags

@hbdgaf x64dbg.com/#start ... cough

@mitch the dupe here does not seem to be a dupe to me askubuntu.com/questions/502557/… (dupe is about deleted files; he is talking about a non-booting system that still seems to hold files

Q: How much rep does a veteran have?

TimSo occasionally around the place (on Meta) I see "Since you are a veteran" or "Veterans have this privilege". How much rep does a use have to have to be considered a veteran?

3:03 PM
@Braiam object eth0 is unknown

@Lucio meh, sudo ip link set eth0 down && sudo ip link set eth0 up
Y U SO LONG ip?

@Braiam lol
it seems to work but now it seems network is broken :/
doing ping google.com I get "connect: network is unreachable"

ifconfig?

AFAIK it is all good

route -n?

3:10 PM
Doing ....eth0 down it disappear from ifconfig so the IP command is working
sudo ip link set braiam up

@Lucio you didn't set a router, right?

The eth0 is dynamic, if that help
do you mean the gateway attr?
I hate my self to don't have more advc knowledge on networking :'(

3:35 PM
@Braiam Do you consider this a good configuration?
I think it is broken and that's way I need to remove eth1 and reboot everytime I wanna internet connectivity
no idea who to make it reachable from host machine and have internet on guest without using port-forwarding
I suck.

Q: gtk-window-decorator takes up too much memory, and is it safe to restart it?

T...I would like to restart the gtk-window-decorator process, because it takes up 600MB memory. Will that affect other processes? From my experiences, after killing it, all other programs will lose their window frames, but after I run it again, the other programs will have their window frames back, ...

@chili555 You there friend.
@chili555 there is a particular cases I am helping on that you might know more: askubuntu.com/questions/502545/…

@Lucio I have no idea what you are doing anymore..

@Braiam I have a VM that I SSH'd it from the host machine using local IP (192.168.56.x)
the SSH thing works good with the eth1 rule
but when it is active (on the interfaces file) there is no internect connection on the guest machine

@Lucio you have a nat and a bridged interface, right?

3:46 PM
so I remove eth1 from the file and reboot. Then I have internet connection to do apt-get updates and such
@Braiam NAT & host-only
host-only == bridge?

@Takkat welp!
@Lucio nope

Hi @Lucio @Braiam. Hacking someone through ssh?

Q: Configure Virtualbox guest with static IP, SSH and internet access from host

DevAntoineI have an Ubuntu Server 12 virtualbox guest running on a Windows 7 host which has a dynamic IP (and I don't wanna change this considering it's a laptop and I'm changing network frenquently). I want to have a static IP for my VM and a SSH access from my host but I still want to have the internet ...

\o/
the first answer is useless
hell, all the answers are useless
@Braiam could you write up a nice answer there that I could bounty? :)

Let me tackle that one. So you want a Guest running (Ubuntu, Windows) with an static IP, but also SSH access and Internet access from the host.
Is that it

oh sorry, just read it
@LuisAlvarado exactly
host and guest ubuntu trusty

Ok which one will be guest
thank the lord

4:06 PM
but guest is headless

I thought guest was windows
omg you killed it!

oh gosh, no :P
jaja

What do you mean headless
in the background headless mode?

no GUI
at all

correct ok

4:15 PM
@LuisAlvarado Do you pronounce the "s" in your name?

yes
Louis
in English it would be pronounced like that
At least in Detroit they called me like that

@AmithKK Do you pronounce the "KK" in your name? :P

I always pronounce @AmithKK like AmizzzKAKA!!

@LuisAlvarado cool

hehe

4:17 PM

@Lucio That's my last name :P
I was just asking because I know this guy named Luis who pronounces his name as "luie"
Just curious

you can also say it like that
or my nickname cyrex

wow
I didn't knew of that one

@Lucio is the guess ubuntu server or desktop?

hey cool
@Lucio do I have to install ubuntu server via the console or can I use the gui for the installation part at least.

it has a kinda gui installation
it is full console still
but with a nice installation tool
it is like a windows inserted on a terminal, funny :P

so it is possible to install it via gui and then work on it via console

no
heh, sorry for the confusion

It's just a nice console.

5:06 PM
ok

@LuisAlvarado Do it in a VM maybe.

exactly

@LuisAlvarado the debian installer (the one that use the server installation) is a easy to use tool if you want just be fast
and yet powerful if you want to be niffy about how to install stuff

Thank, in this case I would like to do it 100% the terminal hard way. Was actually very curious about several parts of the virtualbox terminal commands.

I'm hell of good at this
