Q: Meaningful tag wikis/excerpt

BraiamI've seen a bunch of approved tag wiki's and excerpt that really, really don't follow any of the guidelines for Tag wiki's/excerpt and are run of the mill man/wikipedia/project page dumps. This is not useful, but the worse part is that there are people approving them and the editor thinks he's do...

so what is new in 4.4.3

The 3.

a lot

@jrg yes to?

did they finally do the application control thing?

1:20 AM
They fixed a whack of bugs.
A lot of them are related to the camera and battery.
But seriously, I didn't spend hundreds of $$$ buying a Nexus device so that Sprint users could be the first to benefit from updates.

@NathanOsman so... I thought that google rolled out the updates... but it is carrier based?

They release the updates, yes, but they're doing it with Sprint customers first.

1:39 AM
@Seth jrg becoming a cyborg?

Yep. Someday at least.
Pretty sure you have to be 18 to be an explorer though :-/

@Seth I think yahoo thinks im in my 70's so...

Q: How do I implement pidgin hide groups feature

DanatelaSince pidgin developers refused to implement subject of the question, I attended myself to start doing the patch that will implement that feature. There is a patch that does this for libpurple but it's hardcoded and I need the option to hide/show groups at run time, like any other messenger does....

@Danatela sorry, i'm weak in programming side :(

thanks for reading though
could you explain me how to make it better? I even made example answer but it was closed =(
so I can't even offer a bounty, I suppose

Q: Lets remove the tools, crash, freeze and troubleshooting tags the right way™

BraiamWell, this is not your run off the mill tag removal request, but a petition to also close the questions with these tags. Questions tagged with such tags tend to be totally worthless, unclear and impossible to give a concise and precise answer that we could call THE answer. So, for the next 30 day...

Q: Why `dpkg -S /var/lib/dpkg` shows "base-files, dpkg"?

Avinash RajI'm curious to know which package provides the /var/lib/dpkg directory, so i run this command $ dpkg -S /var/lib/dpkg base-files, dpkg: /var/lib/dpkg The resulted output displays the package which provides /var/lib/dpkg along with base-files string like the above. $ dpkg -S /var/lib/aptitude...

4:25 AM
@sadmicrowave as in? What do you mean "use an environment variable with a .conf file"?

@sadmicrowave snort is as powerful as confusing it can get, I would suggest just using the defaults

heres my question in some more detail:

what is the appropriate IDE to develop such apps as Pidgin? Vim? Emacs?

4:39 AM
It depends on the programming language.

I'm used to Visual Studio

> 2012

and the language is pure C

just use what you feel accustomed with

@NathanOsman Remember the thing about the "Best Windows IDE for python"?
I think i've decided it's ninja

4:41 AM
I do not recommend new programmers start in C.

It has PEP analysis and stuff :P

@NathanOsman well, I'm experienced enough

@Danatela In what?

but Pidgin sources are weird
@Nathan Delphi, C++, C#, Java
and I'm a programmer since 2006

Ah, okay. My apologies.
In that case, C is C++ without classes and type safety in a number of places.
You lose quite a bit, sadly - typed enums, templates, C++ casts, RTTI, etc.

4:47 AM
and without overloading functions =)

Yeah, that too.
I tend to avoid it unless I'm doing low level systems or embedded programming.
But even Arduino's compiler supports a C++-like language.

@NathanOsman and what languages do you know?

Python and C++ are my specialities.
I learned enough Java to write a couple Android apps.

5:02 AM
hmm always wanted to write smartphone's app
Venki wants to learn Java

what the site is about?

@Seth So it was, thanks for the heads up.
@Danatela no one has ever claimed that vim is convenient or easy to use! They claim it is excellent that's not the same thing. :)

Q: Will there be armel images for 14.04?

TshepangLooking at this page, it looks like armel arch will not be provided for 14.04. I'd that the case? Why so and when did this happen? As a sidenote, I run armel 12.04 on my embedded systems, and haven't checked if armhf works.

can someone confirm this? :D

@terdon btw has emacs support for documentation provided in comments?

9:39 AM
@Danatela yes.

and so the Vim?
hmm Emacs resembles me UKNC computers

9:56 AM
@Danatela Documentation provided in comments? You mean generating the docs from the code? Sure.
emacs can do everything that vim can, only better. vim can do everything that emacs can, only better.

%)
is there any app that can do everything that itself can, only better?

@Danatela emacs!
@Danatela Well, this is what my emacs looks like:
Still think it looks like a UKNC computer?

now it looks like Eclipse 0_o

Yup :)
When we say that emacs is customizable, we mean CUSTOMIZABLE :)

one question
I have zpanel installed on ubuntu , which manages all hosting on my ubuntu server
I am installing NTOP application on same server
which will have address server-ip:port to access user Interface
will this cause any issue with my existing Hosting , because same IP address is usedfor all websites
I mean NTOP installation should not have any effect on running of zpanel(hosting )

10:36 AM
@D_Vaibhavツ It shouldn't. All websites served by a given server generally have the same IP. If you are using a different port, there will be no conflict.
Man, what a useless question:

@terdon I'm reading tutorial but the one thing haunts me: how is it supposed to be a code editor? most of the Control and Alt commands are useful for casual text editing…

@Danatela huh?
What Control and Alt commands?

C-f C-b M-a M-e

Also, what I showed you was using a plugin called ecb
@Danatela Yes. what about them?

I mean, moving around sentences

10:40 AM
I still don't understand.

@AvinashRaj your not supposed to use the html codes ;)

There are literally hundreds of emacs commands. The ones you show are one way of moving around. You can do that in code or prose, no they are not specific to code. Other commands are.

OK
I think I need a cup of beer to get around

@Danatela emacs has a steep learning curve, no question about it. It looks scary at first but once you learn it, you will never want to use another editor.

@Braiam Yeah, I didn't feel that was too aggressive.
You should have read what I wanted to write :)

So. many. questions. to. close.

Is github.com/AskUbuntu/ProFormaComments/blob/master/… working for any of you in Chrome?
The instructions posted in the repo don't work for me "because its MIME type ('text/plain') is not executable, and strict MIME type checking is enabled."

Yep, works for me. I'm using Chromium.
What are you trying to do @OliverSalzburg?

@Seth I'm trying to import that set of comments into my fork of the extensions. I'm working on a new feature and the set seems good for testing

Ah, your fork of the pro forma comment extension? And you're importing this link right? https://raw.github.com/askubuntu/ProFormaComments/master/comments.jsonp

@Seth Correct
Refused to execute script from 'https://raw.github.com/askubuntu/ProFormaComments/master/comments.jsonp?jsonp=callback&_=1397680700309' because its MIME type ('text/plain') is not executable, and strict MIME type checking is enabled.
That's what I get in the devtools console when I try to retrieve the data

8:39 PM
That's odd.
It is clearly a jsonp file.
What happens if you remove the callback?

I just imported https://raw.githubusercontent.com/AskUbuntu/ProFormaComments/master/comments.js‌onp and worked fine, where's yours @OliverSalzburg? maybe a bug introduced

@Seth I would have to fiddle with that part of the extension to remove that first

@OliverSalzburg That probably has something to do with it :-/
Hm, in my dev console I get this when I retrieve it:
Resource interpreted as Script but transferred with MIME type text/plain: "https://raw.github.com/askubuntu/ProFormaComments/master/comments.jsonp?jsonp=callback&_=1397680872601".
But it works properly.

@Braiam Same error Refused to execute script from 'https://raw.githubusercontent.com/AskUbuntu/ProFormaComments/master/comments.js‌onp?jsonp=callback&_=1397680919078' because its MIME type ('text/plain') is not executable, and strict MIME type checking is enabled.

> and strict MIME type checking is enabled

you using "use strict;"?

Either way, I don't have my own set of comments. Rather I'm working on enabling the feature for other areas of the site (off-topic closure reasons, edit summaries)
@Braiam No

@OliverSalzburg you on github right?

@Braiam Yeah
> As nosniff support is added to Chrome and Firefox, hotlinking will stop working in those browsers, and we wanted our beloved users, human and otherwise, to know why.
Which I got from:

A: Link and execute external JavaScript file hosted on GitHub

PeejaThis is no longer possible. GitHub has explicitly disabled JavaScript hotlinking, and newer versions of browsers respect that setting. https://github.com/blog/1482-

So I assumed this is no longer possible. I'm actually confused that it works fine for you guys :\
This is the branch I'm working on right now: github.com/oliversalzburg/SE-AutoReviewComments/tree/…

9:00 PM
Either way, if anyone could post the raw, markdown formatted version of the comments for me somewhere, that would be appreciated. Then I don't have to convert the JSON data myself ;D
Ah, it works in Firefox. Good enough for testing

looks cool that ant

@Braiam I first discovered the approach from another browser extension called YouTubeCenter. I liked it a lot for creating several browser extensions from a single userscript. But we've made heavy adjustments to the original version
You guys have a lot of comments. Is this better or worse?
"this" being the scrollbar

I think we don't need the scroll
also, thre's the neat "show/hide desc"

@Braiam Ah, I see
I never really used that. Good to be aware that that is being put to good use

@Braiam Did the JSONP import work with my multi-target branch? Or were you not trying that?

9:33 PM
is this normal?

@Braiam No
That's probably from my master

no problems here

btw, bump your version, it was nagging me to "update"

@Braiam I just pushed a fix for the [type here] issue. If you like, please pull that and beta test the feature from that branch. You can prefix comments with C for off-topic closure reason, EA for edit summary on answers and EQ for edit summaries on questions
Multiple targets can be combined with [EA,EQ] and so on
I'd appreciate any feedback, as this was one of the requested features for the script

Maybe you'd even come up with some great defaults to put in the script ;)
I currently have these for testing:

###[EQ] Improper tagging

hey

11:26 PM
@OliverSalzburg the [A] and [Q] work wonderfully! My script is all cleared up now. I would, however, make the doc a bit more explicit. You say they need to be prepended to the comments, it took me a little while to understand that they need to be prepended to the comment title.
How do the C EA and EQ work @Oliver? I thought that adding a C to one of my comments should bring up the auto button in the close->off topic -> other. That doesn't happen for me.

@Mateo heh. I don't understand why people don't get the ISO the day before final or the week after. I mean if you REALLY need Ubuntu next, it's always available...

meh, actually downloading the disk before time just delay the release process

The only possible motivation I can think of for that is isolating any changes that were in prev-day daily and stable landing. It could be an interesting blog article twice a year I guess... but probably not. It could be titled "Smart but procrastinator developers/packagers" unless you find some killer feature they didn't get the community to alpha/beta.

the archive has been frozen for a while, getting the ISO and just zsyncing it the day of is a good trick

@hbdgaf yeah, that is what I did a few weeks back when I wanted to try it out, sure it didn't have the tahr logo yet... but oh well

11:37 PM
@JorgeCastro good call. Didn't know daily builds froze that far ahead of time. It does seem... "only logical" in his best spock voice.

that and this netbook isn't important ;)

another close vote askubuntu.com/q/304732/169736

i need to check the black-screen question for something...
rel1k indicated in a facebook post that he had an issue with Ubu 14.04 LTS black-screening during install on a UEFI box with a SATA optical drive... is this a known issue... something for the black-screen qa... something for a bugtracker... or just an oddball hardware case?

@hbdgaf what type of graphics?

11:42 PM
remove from kernel parameters quiet and splash

he said he did that and it didn't provide any output. no hw list disclosure, but here comes a shot of the rig if anyone cares to identify this swathe of video cards...

that's some serious SLI, what's up with the drives though

hash grinding rig. loads of precompute and loads of gpu.

wow, it has a blubber!

11:48 PM
anyway, said it was trial and errored out to SATA optical... then it worked like a champ. don't know how easy it will be to reproduce without using the same mobo. if anyone has a set to try and do that uefi enabled on... give it a shot. otherwise, i'm just going to chalk it up to a bios stall.

@hbdgaf bet it is all out like titans or something

no idea. you want the keys per second from ocl-hashcat?

so not attached in sli?

no. not at all. the thing @JorgeCastro thought was sli was the heatsink. They're independent GPUs

yeah on the far left side

11:54 PM
or i could be mistaken and sli could not require cables like crossfire does. i don't buy that brand, so i don't know. that's how i would read it that way.

so that plate there is just for physical stability?

The plate is the scaffold for the heatsinks between the video cards and the liquid runs through it as I understand my perception of the rig looking at where hoses are going.
