I've got an SSD, 24GB of RAM and a 6 core CPU - compile faster already!

come on, COMPILE FASTER! :D
I hope I got the parameters right. I don't want to have to do this a second time...
Yay, done!

Dude.

did Lollipop not have System UI Tuner??

Dunno. It's been a long time since I used Lollipop...

It should be a long time since anyone used lollipop.

I can't enable it on my LL emu
and it doesn't look like it actually existed on LL
but someone said my app works on the G4 LL

I'm running Lollipop.... what comes next M&M's?
oh nvm
Marshmallow
mellow?

dumdum

@WinEunuuchs2Unix yeah, marshmallow. Then nougat.
Then Android O, which isn't out yet.
@TheWanderer D was doughnut dumdum ;p

@Seth Alcatel updates my OS when they want to I bought it on KitKat and a year later they upgraded it to Lollipop OTA.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix yeah. When you buy Android you need to buy carefully to keep getting the updates. Sometimes that means spending a bit more money, but it's important.
Unfortunately the manufacturers keep changing their tune so what brand to buy for updates keeps changing.

@Seth In all honesty I really don't care about Android updates. It's just a phone.... if it added more options to Stack Exchange app it would be worthwhile but of course it can't do that.

1:55 AM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix It's important security wise. There was a bug in kitkat, for example, where someone could send you a specially crafted MMS message and take over your phone.
And it rolls over to other apps too. In time Stack Exchange will stop supporting 5.0 too, and then you won't get any security fixes from them (not likely a big deal in the Stack Exchange app's case, but imagine your favorite texting app or something)
Unfortunately making our phones smarter also means we now have to deal with updates and major security issues.

@Seth I delete all the messages I get from unknown advertisers. As far as taking over my phone I was hoping to upgrade to Alcatel One Touch Idol 4 with 2 watt stereo speakers because these 1.8 watt stereo speakers are soooo 2015 :p
Sorry for being non-nonchalant but I really don't care about hackers. And I really do need an excuse to buy a new phone.... a new version of Android isn't one of them though.
I've got a 64GB micro SD in it and it's only half full so I can't use "not enough storage" as reason to buy new phone. Plus I could buy a 128GB micro SD so my excuses to buy a new phone are further delayed. sigh

2:18 AM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix yes but what if your friend's phone was taken over?
man, laptop docking stations are awesome. It's so nice to be able to set it down and instantly have 2 full size monitors, full size keyboard, and full size mouse. But if I need to go somewhere else just press a button, grab the laptop and boom.

What does it mean for an icon theme to be licensed under the GPL?

\o
@NathanOsman in relation to what? If you put them in closed software: trouble. If you load them at runtime (so people can change a theme) you are fine.
The 1st makes your software GPL. The 2nd does not.

Well, I want to use an icon in a splash screen.
And I don't think I need attribution.
But it's hard to tell.

Q: Booting Linux from USB without overwriting Windows

Keir SimmonsSo I was under the impression that if I flashed an image of Ubuntu onto a USB stick, connected it to my laptop running Windows 10 and booted it from the boot menu (F10) I would be able to use linux as usual without having to worry about my Windows installation. However, when Ubuntu boots, it brin...

8:50 AM
@Zanna don't you mess with my edits haha

I was just going to say oops excuse the unintended edit war

:)
that moment when you realise your installation is so new you haven't installed cURL...
didn't 16.10 have cURL by default?
Did I dream that?

You mentioned?

hahaha nice curl

8:54 AM
16.10 I believe :)

user136984
9:22 AM
@JacobVlijm: What the hell is that??? :D

user136984
@terdon: You seem to know a lot about science... You don't happen to know anything about clouds or at least enough to judge if these are completely normal or strange?

The curls you mean? Not sure, but It won't have a long term support :)

user136984
Well, that is a relief! :D

user136984
Nobody seems to be taking my clouds too seriously... :(

@ParanoidPanda The most recent president of the US is upholder of geo-engineering. Not so much a secret. It was on the news here. utterly bad imo.

user136984
9:26 AM
@JacobVlijm: What??? Where was this reported?

I don't exactly remember, it was on a late actuality program. It was said that actually doing it would come closer with his support for the idea.

user136984
@JacobVlijm: I tried searching for it just now but couldn't really find anything. If you find it again please let me know. :)

user136984
What news thing was it on do you remember?

@ParanoidPanda To be correct, It was said that it didn't actually happen, but some scientists were making plans for geo-engineering; spreading reflecting parts in the high atmosphere to eliminate global warming. Now the president was in favor of those plans, the risk was that it would be done some day.

9:32 AM
truly apocalyptic
we are all dead if this happens

^ this

user136984
@JacobVlijm: Well, it wouldn't actually surprise me then if they weren't doing something already or at least big tests.

it's untestable

Horrifying, totally horrifying

we haven't even tried Plan A: stop burning fossil fuels

9:34 AM
@Zanna not something that can be done overnight

user136984
I've heard there's been crazy weather in the US.

user136984
Why not?

user136984
Who knows...

@JourneymanGeek true, but it can be done :)
much more easily than lobbyists would like us to believe

^ oh yeas

user136984
9:35 AM
If they can do it, and are in favour of doing it, then it's probably already being done somewhere.

user136984
They might not test it at home but still...

@Zanna The problem is though, we need to consistantly move off fossil fuel infrascture

let's not speculate

not one step forward two steps back

totally right...

9:37 AM
it's in progress
(space garbage)

user136984
Well, this site claims that geo-engineering is creating clouds in order to hamper with solar power production because the Oil industry doesn't want it. I would say it's entirely possible, it might not be true, but it's not as crazy an idea as it was once.

user136984
But speculation won't help us, I agree.

user136984
So I think that the matter needs to be investigated. I heard that an Italian MP tried to launch an investigation into the matter a few years ago but that the government suppressed it. I will have to look into that.

@Takkat Looks like we don't need the small parts...

why small parts when we can have the big ones ;)

9:40 AM
that's a whole lotta junk

they did show an animation of a robot with a net to collect bits of junk... but it won't work because the rubbish parts have such a high speed.

they are very destructive I think? I heard something...

Hello @Takkat and hello everyone, I need an urgent help, can you please help
I have tried searching for an answer. How do I use my usb mic in ubuntu 16.04? The mic option does not come under 'Input' in the 'Sounds' setting.

10:08 AM
@katyasehgal sorry, I have no expereince wirth USB sound devices... perhaps try another port?

@takkat I have a H1 Zoom recorder that functions as a USB Mic. I need to urgently use it on Ubuntu 16.04.
Can you guide me to a person who can help?

You can try to ask on the main site to reach more people, then give as much information on your hardware as possible (incl. output of lsusb, and paclt list sources when mic is plugged in).

@katyasehgal I have an H1. If you ask a question on the main site, I will answer it.

Sure I am onto it.
Please have a look
@takkat I may have pressed ignore a user by mistake. How do I undo it??

Q: I want to connect a USB Mic to Ubuntu 16.04.

katya sehgalI have a H1 Zoom Recorder and it functions as a USB Mic. I connect it to Ubuntu 16.04, but I am unable to find it under 'Input' tab of the 'Sounds' option. @katyasehgal yeah, thanks. writing an answer :)
@katyasehgal posted :)

10:30 AM
@JacobVlijm the problem is I don't see the option... posted in the answer.
I have used the recorder for hours recently, it is new and functioning well.

@katyasehgal silly question, you pressed on Audio and confirmed the bitrate?

yes
And after which I see that the levels on the screen.
with USB written.
What else can I do, do you need some info?

....scratching my head
@katyasehgal is it listed in lsusb?

what do I check for in lsusb?
I have posted result in the question itself on advice of @takkat

Ah, sorry

10:39 AM
@katyasehgal it appears not tobe listed... did you try another (USB2) port?

can I post result here?

@JacobVlijm I am getting the same lsusb result on all ports

@katyasehgal hmmm. looking into this: gnomecoder.wordpress.com/2012/02/03/…

Hmm
My daily downloads spiked by 400%

10:51 AM
@JacobVlijm would a new H1 Zoom Recorder need the upgrade? The article seems to be from 2012

@katyasehgal I don't know, but keep in mind that these microphones are probably sold from a large stock.
The latest firmware link is here though now: gnomecoder.wordpress.com/2012/02/03/…. I will add it to the answer.

@JacobVlijm true. How do I check?

and hardware haxxing is fun.

@JacobVlijm are you saying there is no solution?

10:55 AM
@katyasehgal I would try updating firmware!
I would be surprised if it didn't work.

Okay, I'll ask Amazon about this first.
Thanks @JacobVlijm

Amazon?

I bought the device from Amazon.

They won't give you another advice then "use windows" is my guess.

@JacobVlijm will be sad to use windows.

10:59 AM
I am sure you don't need to. Mine works fine here.
16.04 as well

Did you upgrade? When did you buy the device ?

I bought it a few years ago, but stock can be huge, impossible to say when manufactured.

I'll get back to you @JacobVlijm

@katyasehgal Ah, great. Good luck!

11:16 AM
@ParanoidPanda Pretty crazy. For one thing the costs would be prohibitive. For another, how do you get your clouds to stay where you put them? Generating clouds is easy, of course, but why in the world would you do that using commercial flights? Not to mention that the video you cite shows no connection whatsoever between the clouds and the planes. This sounds like typical conspiracy nonsense.

I demand more spam.
...Or ate least a fair share in nuking it.

lol

@Zanna I don't think so. The original certainly seemed to be suggesting commenting out that line.

Q: If i'm getting Down votes for an answer is it good idea to Delete it?

Sumeet DeshmukhThe answer in question is this I'm getting down votes on that answer apparently for some reason that I can't see (or maybe don't understand yet), a down voted answer represents a poorly written answer or answer that doesn't work. so is it a good idea to delete such answer to keep the site clean?...

perfect opportunity

12:13 PM
@Zanna hmm, I think you use # to comment out the line.

Maybe he's not familiar with commenting out things.
Or maybe it's me who is not familiar.

you are correct as always ;)

Dubious conclusion.

@Zanna Presumably because you can make your own and not, I fervently hope, because you already own a set.

@JourneymanGeek It better be, if it doubles as paradox protection gear.

what do you call that bit of a sword above the hilt that protects your hand? The bit that has been so elegantly shaped in the photo?

the guard?

is that it?

12:40 PM
@terdon 5.5 kg monster ;p

I was expecting an exciting word, like "tine"

12:50 PM
maybe better to dupe it but idk to what...

HA exactly the amount of letters allowed:
"better" is a matter of opinion. These questions get closed most time; only if there is a good definition of what you consider better is it possible to give an answer. But generally: what works for you is the better one (maybe you have old hardware that got dropped in a release or something really new that got included in a release). Now this wont happen cuz 16.04 is long term and 17.04 a continuation of 16.04 but this is just an example. Another one:17.04 will have newer versions, maybe bugs got fixed, maybe new bugs got introduced. But maybe you never see that new bug. Or never saw the old one. — Rinzwind 30 secs ago
@Zanna there :=)

@Rinzwind many thanks :D
@Rinzwind nice ^_^

Q: System installation is taking too long (8 hours +)

user682312Installation of Ubuntu 16.04 ls is taking too long. I installed it in a 20gb partition space. I waited for more than 8 hours. Still it was not finished. My PC has 2gb ram. 250 gb hard disk. I also used 2gb swap space.

1:02 PM
probably went for a walk. I usually leave the installer running and go do something else

eh
I barely have time to insert my wireless network password ... Installing takes 9 minutes :X
In total I can be back with a fresh install and all extra software I want within 20 minutes.

I think it takes my toaster about 20 minutes to chew through ubiquity
The whole thing took me an hour and 5 minutes from 16.04 to 16.10. Had some issues with the latest upgrade haha

Get a ssd :P

1:17 PM
it is an SSD :) or rather eMMC

20 minutes sounds too long for a ssd :P
it is fewer than 10 minutes for me

maybe I overestimate

@edwinksl that is from turning on to the last command or config option I need to change.

or maybe something else is slowing it down

oh wait
YES zanna that is far too long

1:19 PM
hmm
I don't want to test it now hahaha

Might also be the time it takes to download updates.

Hello :)

does anyone see something wrong here: askubuntu.com/questions/908752/… The commands look good to me :X

@terdon ah! yes, that seems likely. My machine seems generally fast, my internet seems generally slooooowwwww

Q: Do we really need EOL related announcements hanging about in the unanswered meta questions queue?

Elder GeekI've noticed a couple of these: For example, EOL Notice: Precise Pangolin (12.04) will be End of Life starting April 28, 2017 Non-EOL Notice: Quantal (12.10) remains supported through April 2014 Since statements of fact are unlikely to result in much discussion and the EOL dates are published ...

@Zanna I don't suppose you have any idea what's wrong here? This is driving me nuts!

@AndroidDev o.O sounds super annoying...
I would upvote but I ran out of post votes...

Wow, you must vote a lot!

@AndroidDev 40 :+)

do you think the systemd-analyze blame output is irrelevant? Nothing there looks abnormal...

2:51 PM
They should change that max upvote thing. Make it relative to upvotes you got yourself: the more you get the more you can upvote yourself.

@Zanna No idea. But it seems to agree with dmesg
@Rinzwind How long did you say your boot time with your SSD was?

my boot time is ~8 seconds

@Zanna From when? From right after the POST finishes?

@AndroidDev 7, 8 seconds. I switched to budgie and have not timed that one yet.
from hitting the ON to a desktop

@AndroidDev from pressing the power button

one thing.

yeah :/

boot speed depends on somethign from the ssd
you need high read speed and not all ssd have that

My SSD is 550MB/sec

more than enough :=)
I have an OCZ
Vertex 3 IIRC

@Rinzwind --^

Mine is slower than yours

Right. So then why does my system take 20 seconds FROM GRUB?

2:59 PM
what Ubuntu version?

systemd?
so analyze the boot :+)
