Yeah, I'm going to be ubunut for a while, then I'll switch to my usual look.

Kay. I should actually take some sleep now. It's 2 AM... :-/
Good night.

Jeez, get to bad ASAP

@ByteCommander you got the tuna?

Q: Many troubles trying to mount QNAP NFS server on Ubuntu mount point

SteveI have a QNAP TS-251 NAS with a pair of 4 GB drives set up as RAID 1, running as a server, mainly for backups. It has the default operating system, QTS 4.2.0 (2016/01/19), which I think is current. It's a customized flavor of Linux with a GUI interface that I run from my Windows desktop. It has I...

I'm currently fuming against UPS. They claimed nobody was home when they tried to deliver a package but somebody was home. Frustrating... hey, didn't that happen to @Oli once? That sounds vaguely familiar.

That. Exactly that.

@NathanOsman I need to choose a language for a very simple web app. There's no major security concerns, and no need for performance. What should I use?
And I don't want to have to do that socket or proxy junk. I just want it to work.

Anonymous
12:29 AM
@NathanOsman similar stuff happens with the Amazon same-day delivery service contractors

@KazWolfe Python with Django.
It's the simplest to get up and running.

@ThomasW. may I ask you something about python ?

And there are boatloads of resources online if you run into any problems.

@NathanOsman I already have NGINX running though...

So? I deploy Django apps with Nginx.
All you need is uWSGI.

12:36 AM
then proxy_pass. again

@Serg anything I can help with?
@KazWolfe is that bad?

I'm trying to avoid using proxy_pass and sockets.

@Serg sure, though I think more than just me may know things and can help :)

Then don't use Nginx!

Apache doesn't work either.
Still need proxies.

12:37 AM
That's kinda how it works...

@KazWolfe uwsgi is its own socket. nginx opens TCP sockets. you have to proxy_pass to backend applications regardless

Unless you use mod_php (deprecated) you're going to be using a proxy.

even in Apache you have to - they just make it 'hidden' by making PHP its own builtin module - it still goes to a separate backend process

@ThomasW. @NathanOsman well , I am trying to play with dbus in python ( for a script of course ) , and the issue is . . .i need to tell python to treat var as command

Why not just PHP

12:38 AM
@Serg code snippets are fun, not sure what you mean by 'treat var as command' :)

Basically like variable expansion in bash
OK, will post in a minute

@KazWolfe you want to use PHP?

it still doesn't need me to deploy a full stack
It seems to be the easiest.

Yeah, it does.
You need the PHP interpreter.
The proper way to run PHP nowadays is FastCGI. And that's no easier than Python+uWSGI.
So you gain nothing.

^ that

12:40 AM
why is web so hard now

and that applies regardless of webserver. Apache, nginx, lighttpd, custo python webservers, they all have the same evils of PHP or non-HTML backends

It was never easy :D

@Serg gist.
line numbers make me barf :)

The only possible exception may be Go since it packs its own web server and event scheduler.
But that's not something you can quickly learn and get started in :P

mmmm... Go... there's four projects I need to know some Go for, and I don't know it :/

12:42 AM
And even still, I put Nginx in front of my Go apps.
Because static files.

indeed.

@NathanOsman @ThomasW. paste.ubuntu.com/18137277

stupid obvious question: python 2 or python 3

o/ @badp
long time no see here :)

12:44 AM
Sorry @Serg. I'm on my phone and about to eat.

@ThomasW. haven't decided yet :) Let's go with 2.7

I arrived sooner than expected...
Catch you all later.

bon apetit !

@Serg want me to throw sticks at you for the fail I already noticed early on?
E: Missing Colon for Function Declaration
@Serg you need an IDE. I'm looking at your code, and proxy. shows all the methods it inherits from the dbus object already given to it

@ThomasW. I want that to be passed to the function, not hard-code it into the function
Also, Ill take some sticks for my cozy bon-fire

12:48 AM
@Serg so you want get_dbus(foo,bar,baz) to return the DBus object?

mmmm . . . wait a second . . . that's a good idea actually

@Serg explain "passed to the function"
because that's fairly vague
@Serg what do you want the function to do?
proxy contains a DBus object right now
(created a room but we decided against using it shrugs)

OK . . . .basically , python needs to have bunch of lines for getting dbus output
What i want is the same as this:
qdbus org.ayatana.bamf /org/ayatana/bamf/matcher org.ayatana.bamf.matcher.WindowPaths
Give a command some parameters, and it spits out output
Problem is the actual method part
Python wants it like proxy.WindowPaths(dbus_interface=' . . . ')
so i need some way to telling python function , take VAR='WindowPaths' , and stick it onto proxy.
something like eval
I can write method that will run qdbus command with Popen , but i wanna do it the dbus way

stick it onto proxy how?
as in that's the arguments passed to WindowPaths, or...?
ahhhh your comments are useful
@Serg do you want these 'results' to be wide open to the entire Python script or specifically for get_dbus?

@ThomasW. entire python script, i may need to reuse the function multiple times

1:01 AM
ok give me a minute to think on this
@Serg so. I don't think this is as easy as you think it is
because there is no ayatana functions in here
where'd you get the WindowPaths code?

@ThomasW. Got example here: dbus.freedesktop.org/doc/dbus-python/doc/tutorial.html Modified it to work with Unity ( ayatana is part of Unity's window tracking system )
I sort of simplified it, but not quite happy
I made the function return proxy
So now i can do this
windows = get_dbus('org.ayatana.bamf','/org/ayatana/bamf/matcher').WindowPaths(dbus_interface='org.ayatana.bamf.matche    r')

@Serg may I make a modification perhaps?
if you don't mind.
has the code open in PyCharm

sure . . . meanwhile i found something else,too

@Serg because Gist does highlighting better. gist.github.com/teward/4ffa18aa5a0dae802cd79a07e1dcc254

1:16 AM
I GOT ET
hold on, need to clean up the codez

we should get rep for reviewing

like +1 rep per action or something (if your action was the "valid" one that took effect)

@Serg cool. Mind if I still make more changes?

@ThomasW. please do

1:23 AM
128 new messages here
at least it's a power of 2

128 new messages of awesomeness and pythoness

@KazWolfe SRSLY

@Serg do you mind if I split things up a little into multiple functions?

@Serg If it was you and Kaz, I'm sure

I'm out for a smoke . . .man i feel good after getting this function working

1:24 AM
@Serg STOP SMOKING

@Zacharee1 hey. I try to help sometimes. Also, it's more useful than ubuntu poops.

:)
@Serg iz bad 4 helth
@KazWolfe what now

@ThomasW. em . . . how about keeping two internal functions within one ? ( nested functions )

@Serg because you can only do that in a class - they're still part of the same .py

@Zacharee1 i might quit soon , all thanks to Jacob . . . well, i need my gf's approval too

1:25 AM
I just want rep for reviews.

@ThomasW. is keeping that as one and the same function not good ?

@Serg you're hesitant about approval for quitting smoking?

you can do it this way but...

@KazWolfe pls

@Serg review PEP8

1:26 AM
wow, SU gets way more stupid questions than we do

@ThomasW. I'm not familiar with PEP8

stylistic changes for the most part
PEP8 is the style guidelines
PyCharm has it built-in for things.

Oh, so no variables on caps ?

1:28 AM
surrrre

THE RESISTANCE SHALL FALL

@Serg not in arguments, no.
@Serg globals, outside all classes, etc. yes.

WE STAND BEHIND JARVIS AND THE ACOLYTE

@Serg properties and variables inside a class, yes.
function arguments, and variables inside of a function, no.

@KazWolfe what are you on about?

1:28 AM
Ok.... otherwise, does it look good ?

(if nobody gets those references, i will be very sad)

or maybe I should just say, what are you on?

@Serg if it works, it works, though I'd probably have made a separate "get_windows" function so you don't have to call get_dbus twice.
want to see what I mean?

@Zacharee1 My doctors are unsure.

o-O
you're fun

1:29 AM
Well , i wanted to have a reusable function for any purpose

do whatever you want - just my recommendation was all

@Serg @Zacharee1 ONE OF YOU CHANGE YOUR PROFILE PICTURE. PLS AND THNX

lolol
I'll do it

@KazWolfe Caps lock rage is reserved for the Mighty One, please don't abuse
:P

@ThomasW. *is Shog in disguise*

1:31 AM
@ThomasW. more caps you say?

@Zacharee1 To shreds, you say?

@KazWolfe idek

@Serg I prefer separating functions out, so we have private 'getter' methods that aren't exposed to the world; you call 'get_dbus' twice here is all

I am now Ubantu

which is a 'wth'
@Zacharee1 Cool, i'm working on an "Evilbuntu: Embrace the Evil" avatar now >:D

1:32 AM
uh oh
competition...
hey

but i am bad at art :)

You could make the ones for the constructed misspellings
I could make them for observed ones
@ThomasW. oh great. now that you're a mod, you can delete your own messages from way far back

i could

you just did

but I won't
@Zacharee1 2min is within deletion sniper range of normalcy I believe.

1:34 AM
No, 2 minutes is when it goes away :p

might've been rounding on my side.
meh.

poof

tfw prod 1, 2, and 3 go down

oooooh
@KazWolfe huh?

mv -t /dev/null that_damn_dog.bark Zach.spellin_bee

@ThomasW. are your messages still throttled now that you're a mod?

I have three prod servers. prod1.thatserver.url, prod2.thatserver.url, and prod3.thatserver.url

1:37 AM
@Serg lez confoos Kaz

yes throttling affects us all. only the Great Gods of Stack Exchange have the Godliness to avoid it, and they don't abuse it either

All three just went down simultaneously

@ThomasW. there are people who aren't?
@KazWolfe lol

@KazWolfe same network on all three but different IPs?

1:38 AM
@ThomasW. Same provider, one in EU, two in US

or three different providers, on three different IPs, on three different servers?

Well, Canada.

could it be your side at fault?

it is, somehow.

gimme linkz

1:38 AM
