what we doing @kos?
you summoned a mod and 20k user
They stand before you.

Good thing I already took care of that one

@James Right, just noticed. Thanks, I'll be able to sleep peacefully.

Q: grub can't find CentOS 7

John OliverMy desktop was tri-booting between Ubuntu 2.04, CentOS 6, and Windows. I installed CentOS 7 in the space that CentOS 6 used, but update-grub doesn't result in the new CentOS showing up. I can only think there's some issue with the version or the way LVM is used by CentOS 7 that Ubntu doesn't agre...

1 hour later…
1:28 AM
added ocd layout mode to my scope:
you can enable it in settings
makes everything even
default looks like:
with them all taking up the space of the text
but un-even

1:52 AM
Those people who criticized my answer about GRUB never responded to my edit. I don't like people like that.
How long is deleted content kept before it's actually deleted?

lol, funny:
@Zacharee1 almost forever I think

huh

for normal non malicious users, I think your deleted contend will be there for a long time
adding theme change setting:

ooo

;P

2:08 AM
lol

@ThomasW. sorry for the delay - I finally got that message taken down.
But don't worry, I don't think anyone here besides me is using it :D
Also, if you have an iPhone, don't set the date to January 1, 1970.
Apparently that hard-bricks the phone.

@NathanOsman really
I kinda want to buy a phone off craigslist to try that

2:27 AM
@James you want to buy a $500 piece of crap to turn it into an even worse piece of crap?

Lol.
Also, fail:

Q: How can I explain to my son why sunlight will hurt his eyes?

kennethMy 30 month old son asked me why people's eyes will hurt if one stares at Mr Sun. I told him the sun shoots sunlight, which is not visible and not touchable. But it exists and is made of atoms just like other things we can see. If it hits our eyes, our eyes will hurt just like a man hurts from a ...

Sunlight damages your eyes because of ultraviolet light.

lol

@NathanOsman try to explain that to a 2 year old
@Zacharee1 nah on craigslist i'd only spend $100 max

If it weren't for the UV radiation, there would be no harm in staring at the sun.

get something with a dead battery or something

2:29 AM
@James Invisible light comes from the sun and burns your eyes

@James If it's still under warranty, you could take it in after and get a new one :D

@James Then you'd get an iPhone clone running Android skinned to look like iOS
They exist
goophone

That's like the worst of both worlds.

@NathanOsman Now that's mean.

It's their silly software bug.

2:30 AM
I'll just believe what @NathanOsman says about that.

It is perfectly safe to stare at a bright flashlight. After a few seconds, you will experience temporary blindness but your eyes will recover after a few moments with absolutely no permanent harm done. People don't realize that this happens on a smaller scale every time you look at an illuminated object.

Right - but don't explain that to a 30 month old human
they won't understand that

The photo receptors in your eye fatigue easily and are continually renewed as time goes on.

they'll just hear "no permanent harm done"

@James Lol.

2:33 AM
@NathanOsman Seriously!

"Junior, put down that flashlight! You've been staring at it all morning!"
(Junior) "Mommy where are you? I can't see!"
Yeah, I guess that wouldn't be a good scene.

we had a 10-11 year old at camp who was 100% correct when he explained that 1st degree burns do not cause lasting damage, so his habit of burning hair off his arm with a match was ok.

i mean, technically... he was right.

I'm sure the burnt hair left him with an attractive smell...

2:35 AM
1st degree burns are basically sunburn
no lasting damage.
but like, seriously? that's irresponsible
so we took the matches away and told his adult leader about it
anyway... that's how they think

Yeah.
@James have you ever uploaded anything to the Mac or iOS app stores (iTunes Connect)?

@NathanOsman nope!
never gotten that far

just reminded me of the psyconauts video game after getting the pyrokinesis merit badge ;)

I'm trying to figure out if sandbox entitlements on the website are supposed to be in addition to what's included in the app bundle...
I've got NitroShare ready for the Mac app store.

@NathanOsman oh, wow - qt naming and everything?

2:39 AM
The thing that has me wondering is that on the website, it asks for an explanation of each entitlement.
@Mateo Qt naming?

Uh oh. I see James BAM'd something :P
3

like how qt uses it's own settings files - won't it not be able to to get to those in the sandbox?

Getting it in the store was actually a bit easier than I anticipated thanks to the CMake Xcode project type.
@Mateo Hmm... I have no idea.
@Mateo would you be interested in testing?

oh, maybe they thought of that now
but this is what I remembered reading:
> By default, Qt stores global settings in ~/Application Support/Preferences/com.trolltech.plist. This violates the Mac App Store file system usage requirements, as the settings file must be named using the application’s bundle identifier,

Oh hmm...
I didn't realize it was doing that.
I think the bundle identifier might be different.
Let me check.

2:44 AM
there is a list of things there to check,
looks like the settings file is a simple plist change >" 2. When the application’s Info.plist contains a key named "ForAppStore" with the value "yes"."

2:56 AM
hahahahahaha "Comcast Cares" followed me on twitter.
Now they will see all my hate tweets about them :P
(okay, I don't actually tweet hate about them, but I can be vocal about how bad comcast is.. both in service and in morals)

probably because of the raspi thing - I think it's a bot

hmm?

hm
anyway, don't know if you touched that one as it made it's round

ohh, right. That. Yeah, maybe they decided to up their game after that.
(I did tweet at them the other day when my upload speeds dropped to 170kbps thus either stopping or extremely slowing any web activity I did)

3:13 AM
I tweet at ATT occasionally
i get better responses than dad does

I feel a skeptics question coming on...

3:28 AM
About what?

Oh
yeah, skeptics for sure

looks like it's false.
but I'll probably ask the question anyway.

Sounds true
just change republican with "random party from the 2 party system", and change the news channel to match.

I wouldn't be surprised. But snopes says it is false. Not that I'm inclined to believe snopes by default.

3:31 AM
ask away on skeptics, it combines politics, trump and trash magazines. all their favorite things

haha I know right xD
He even has his own tag there.

Q: Did Donald Trump say republicans are the dumbest voters in the country?

SethI saw this image going around Twitter lately: If I were to run, I'd run as a republican. They're the dumbest group of voters in the country. They love anything on FOX news. I could lie and they'd still eat it up. I bet my numbers would be terrific. - People Magazine 1998 Is this an ac...

Everyone says it is false though.

Have an upboat

@Seth scroll to #73 here: factually.gizmodo.com/…
Quote from CNN:
> "TRUMP: I'm a registered Republican. I'm a pretty conservative guy. I'm somewhat liberal on social issues, especially health care, et cetera, but I'd be leaving another party, and I've been close to that party."

3:45 AM
Can someone do me a favor?
I need someone else to nmap wraith-3.armyofminions.com

Sure.

yeah I can do that. Why?

(It's my machine. I just need to figure out if my firewall is working properly since I whitelisted my IP address, and my VPN is down)

crap
does port 3000 answer to http?

3:48 AM
Yup.

yes it does
lol

nathan@nathan-desktop:~$ telnet wraith-3.armyofminions.com 3000

Wonder why...
oh. derp.
docker and ufw don't play well together

I see 22, 3000, 3306.
80 says it is closed though.

that's what 3000 and 3306 have in common. 22 & 80 are both explicitly whitelisted.

3:50 AM
My phone is making weird beeping noises for no reason even with notifications off...

Is 3000 still open?

Yup, but no HTTP.
Oh wait.

It's a white page

Yeah, it's still responding to HTTP requests.

:\
docker complicates all of these things.
people talk about this as an issue. i'm surprised that it's set up that way by default

heh
@James Docker is primarily wierd ;p

@JourneymanGeek Complex, yes. I'm not sure about weird.

@NathanOsman I've had issues wrapping my head around it ._.

So the coolest thing about running docker on 8 cores is that bundle install doesn't screw me over every time i have to do it.
LOTSATHREADS FTW
@JourneymanGeek Think of it as git but for operating systems
and then take it a step further and realize that you're sharing a kernel

@James I get containers

4:03 AM
and that tuning your kernel for $task is practically impossible

(I spent about 5 minutes setting up lxd, which is vaguely similar)
I think the big concept I don't get is one vm a process

Ah

and of course, using it as a replacement for documenting an install from scratch

@NathanOsman I kinda like the purple better.

OK, so lets unpack the idea behind one process a container thing
so containers are cheap, right?

4:05 AM
plastic ones are..

so put your web in a container, your nginx in a container, and your background-queue in a different container

yup but having to create open ports between each process is somewhat redundant

now they are all sandboxed
and can't hurt each other
why? it's just sockets, which you'd be doing anyway
it's sockets over a software-defined network, so it's a few ms slower for every few hundred requests

Maybe its "developer" vs "oldschool pc guy" but a sensible way for me to architect stuff is one VM per task

@Seth Really?

4:07 AM
Really.

@James I don't run Nginx in a container. It acts as a reverse-proxy to whatever's in the container.

@NathanOsman I've seen it both ways. I don't have an opinion yet.

It makes SSL termination easy :D
I run a lot of subdomains with a wildcard cert. and having to not worry about SSL configuration in each web app is nice.

So here's my container history right now
each one is separated by process
so i've got running right now (2nd from right column) 3 things - my app, the database and search
on a single machine, docker doesn't do much for me like this
but lets say i have 2 or 3 machines in a cloud somewhere
rather than spending the time figuring out what should go where...
i install a docker scheduler on all 3 machines
and then say "make sure i'm running 4 webapps, 2 search and a database at all times"
and it will move them around my little cluster for me
that's the power of docker
how you build everything inside of that is mostly irrelevant
the power is in the scheduler being a cockroach - you can't kill it. as long as there is "metal" to run stuff on, it'll shuffle things around.
webapp using disk IO, and database and search not? cool, move database and search onto the same machine, leave the rest for webapp to use all the IO
database using all the memory? ok, move everything off of one box and give database all the memory it wants
all of that without you caring
</praises of docker>
(Sorry if I seem excited, i met a Red Hat container guy who talked my ear off a few weeks ago and have been playing with them non-stop ever since.)

4:29 AM
I've gotta run, but @JourneymanGeek - if you have philosophical (or technical) questions about docker, i'm happy to talk about them
it's not easy to understand
but once it clicks it's pretty nifty

@James pretty happy with KVM and LXD at the moment

@JourneymanGeek Haven't played with LXD

@James lxd is quite a lot like docker ;p
but I have it set up bridged

Oh that's nifty
you point openstack at it
i like that a lot
(reading through here ubuntu.com/cloud/lxd)

4:42 AM
I just run it command line since its on the junker at the moment
(Hard drive that's risen from the dead twice, gigabyte brix that's gone through 2 motherboard replacements, and spare laptop ram from the brix's replacement, which was upgraded to 8 gigs ;p)

Q: perfs manager in Ubuntu 14.04

MoonstrokeWhen I was under Ubuntu 14.04, I had in the title bar a menu that allowed me to choosee between high performances or energy saving for the processor. I want to know what app it was, I can't remember... Thermald? Conky? Perf? Something else? And btw can it run under Kubuntu or Lubuntu?

I can't believe I forgot to include fork bomb protection in my Pi >.<

user139252
It's in there now, but not before a student got clever last night.

Oh now that's a good one

what's that

fork bombs?
basically you create a process that continually spawns itself indefinitely
until the system runs out of resources
166
Q: Why did the command ":(){ :|: & };:" make my system lag so badly I had to reboot?

blade19899 DANGER! Do not run this command to 'test' it unless you are prepared for a crash and/or force-rebooting your system. I was in my Virtualbox running 12.04 trying to compile an app, and while waiting I happened to chance upon a forum where a comment said: Try :(){ :|: & };: Fun, too...

> Essentially you are creating a function that calls itself twice every call and doesn't have any way to terminate itself. It will keep doubling up until you run out of system resources.

user139252
Users in the students group can only spawn 40 processes now.

3:45 PM
I wonder...
What group is zork in?

user139252
....

I bet there's a way to forkbomb from inside zork.
actually, zork uses (as a % of available Pi resources) a lot.

user139252
zork is in the students group, of course!

So using phantomjs to run multiple zork sessions could do the trick
or!

any mods around ?

user139252
3:47 PM
I limit the number of zork sessions

Need to kick this out: askubuntu.com/q/733173/295286

A little

CentOS guy

user139252
There can only be 10 zork log-ins at once

you have open signups - create infinite new accounts view a phantomjs script, and then bam. infinite *40 processes
@Serg ok i'll look

3:48 PM
@James thanks

Lol, if I ask a generic linux question with a Fedora screenshot, are you going to kick my question out?

Yeah, we normally do @jokerdino.

@jokerdino probably :)

user139252
@jokerdino On AskUbuntu, yes. Not on U&L :P

is it high-quality enough to move to U&L?

3:49 PM
I'd say lower medium quality . . . but still better off at U&L

user139252
@students hard nproc 30
fabby hard nproc 300
Zacharee hard nproc 300
zork - maxlogins 10
adderguy - maxlogins 10
@students - maxlogins 15

Even though it's generic

I am going to sneak in a couple questions in the next few weeks.

@jokerdino use the ambience GTK theme
nobody will ever know

I haven't been figured out yet.

3:51 PM
Or don't post screens, and do a find&replace of rpm to deb
Everyone will panic because "That error isn't supposed to happen on a debian system!!!"

lol , how to cheat on askubuntu101 chat session

hehehe

So . . . decisions . . . do i study today or do i be lazy and watch tv series or something similar ?

user139252
@James Did you see my limits?

@TheBrownOne yes
that should do the trick

user139252
3:55 PM
Good :D

WTF, i tell this student to put water bottle on table outside, and he straight ignores me , takes a sip , and is about to walk in, when teacher tells him to put it outside

user139252
It would have been hard to forkbomb from zork, anyway, as it's just a Python script

Some people are either really dicks or just ignore me because of accent . . seriously . . .

4:07 PM
Hello Guys :-) I need your advice here. I am having Lots of problems with my Ubuntu Double Quotes and Unknown Connections ....... So should I just reinstall Ubuntu?? Is there nothing else I can do???? I need your valuable opinion . Thanks in advance :-)

any moderator here?
I would like to open this question: http://unix.stackexchange.com/q/254222/52733

4:27 PM
@edwardtorvalds um, there aren't any moderators on that site here...

This guy asks me 'Is there a classroom full of people here ? ' I'm like "English 1020 ? " He "YEah" . I point him to the side lab . . .
I mean . . . what kind of question is this 'Is there a classroom full of people ?'
Another guy asked me "Do you have the opposite of this? ", and he lifts up staple remover

lol
unfortunately college is one of those places that has a larger amount of fools than elsewhere IMO.
@SeverusTux I think the GSM thing can be explained, but I'm not sure about the other. Does the quote issue only happen in a VM?

@Seth don't forget high school - there's abundant amount of fools there too.

true.

I just think all that weed seems to not do any good to Denver folks anymore Oo

kos
4:30 PM
@Serg Lol. :D

@Seth It happens on Both.... host and Vmachine

@Serg and coupled with super bowl win..
@SeverusTux in that case I personally would reinstall.
Make sure you check the SHA256 hash of the image before burning to a disk (and verify afterwards, if possible)
@SeverusTux but what model is your laptop?

:-) sha256 : cc991993e3d9f57f27199877ac416157228fe6896212968d6e8c5aebd74e7ab0 and laptop: HP-compaq 15-s 103tx

hmm, doesn't look like it has a SIM card slot. Weird.
Have you ever plugged a mobile hotspot into the machine? It's possible network manager is just remembering those connections, waiting for you to plug it in again.

Q: C program not compile in codeblock

Debanjan RoyI am using codeblocks to write C/C++ programs, but programs are not compiling, how to resolve this?

@Seth Yes.. I was using a Dongle (I needed to insert the SIM to it) .... but It was long ago

4:42 PM
@SeverusTux I would say it is probably remembering that then, and not to worry about it. I'd still probably reinstall for the quote issue though.

4:58 PM
ARGV !
Another user removed , -10

@Seth hm.... thanks :) your opinion means a lot to me., and One more Question : Should I remove my Questions after reinstall? as I will not be having those.. problems (hope)

@SeverusTux hmm, yeah probably.

@Serg @Seth is banning them to mess with you :p

hm..

@Seth is ban == user deleted ? I don't think @Zacharee1 got it right :p

5:03 PM
@SeverusTux Keep 'em. People might answer and, even though you can't accept any with certainty, they can at least help others.

@Serg no it doesn't.

@Serg OK -- Deleted them to mess with you

By the way, did you guys know original Bourne shell was inspired by ALGOL ?

6:16 PM
Hi guys
my webcam is not working in ubuntu 14.04. I have installed it using vmware and win 8 as the host. I have installed cheese but it says "No device found". Any idea why this is happening?

@Nain If that's a USB web cam, you might want to enable USB for your virtual machine, but I've never used VMware , only Virtual Box, so cannot help much more than this suggestion

its the integrated webcam

eh, can't help you much then

No problem. Thanks

NitroShare is a cross-platform application that facilitates the transfer of files between computers on a local network. == History == NitroShare began as an entry in the Ubuntu App Showdown contest hosted by Canonical in 2012. Although the application failed to win a prize, it received a number of positive reviews from popular blogs within the Ubuntu community and the broader open-source software community at large. Development continued slowly after the contest, with development and bug tracking eventually moving to GitHub in January 2015. NitroShare has been featured in articles by Germ...

A: How easy is it to get Linux.Ekoms.1?

RinzwindImpossible. Unless you install it yourself. you need to download the trojan you need to build the trojan you need to run the trojan A lot of the Ubuntu users probably do not even get it to build due to an old used libc. Besides you needing to use a FIVE year old Ubuntu you also need to kill...

anything else I can add to this _O-
@NathanOsman that is starting to look very good :-)

7:17 PM
The editors didn't think so.

@NathanOsman editors smeditors :=)
lol

user139252
If you time it right, you can use kill !! to stop a forkbomb you just unleashed.

user139252
@NathanOsman You're doing great! You are an excellent developer, and all of your friends/colleagues recognize your intelligence!

7:34 PM
Though shall not kill -9 !

@NathanOsman you're going to sue apple?

Not really...

I'd just drop Apple support. I really couldn't care less.

I wish I could too.

What is this?

7:38 PM
But it's a platform. People use it. I guess I need to support it.

nah.
You could provide unsigned binaries though, once your "license" expires.

Yeah.
I've sunk so much into it already.

You're giving people an app for free. If the OSX people want signed binaries they can pay for it.

I'll need the membership for an iOS version.

Provide a 1-2 sentence explanation and add a donate button to the site. Then just provide unsigned binaries once what you have now expires.
(IMO)

7:40 PM
You can't install apps outside the app store on iOS devices :(

yeah, I know. Poor iOS users.

There are too many of them.

True.
I may just forget about it if Apple rejects my app.

@Nathan I wonder how hard it would be to get a friend/someone else who already does iOS apps to upload it/sponsor it for you.
(no idea if that is even viable)

7:43 PM
Probably not.
It would end up going back and forth between us. "Here, try these changes." "Nope, they rejected it for the 28th time."

hmm, that's a good point. Too picky.
Wow! Moto X 2014 is on sale for $99.

user139252
Apple is just gross, methinks.

@Zacharee1 nice. Now how to get $349.99...
@TheBrownOne definitely.
I am very unapologetic about it, as you can tell ;p

user139252
@Seth Get one! That phone was neat

@TheBrownOne I don't have $99 to spend on a phone right now.
And I'd really prefer one with a removable battery..

user139252
7:48 PM
Ah, bummer :(

yeah :(

The ones without removable batteries tend to be thinner though.
Sounds like my app won't be reviewed until around Monday.
