Q: File in /etc/sudoers.d/ not recognized

DevCybranRunning a fresh install of Ubuntu server 16.04.1, I tried to add a file in /etc/sudoers.d/ to give one user root privileges for a certain command. I added the file /etc/sudoers.d/servicetest with the following content: servicetest ALL = (root) NOPASSWD: /bin/systemctl status * The file /etc/s...

should I turn it to an answer, considering the other guy was who actually confirmed my theory? :p

@KazWolfe vs @Rinzwind: Kaz wins 46+A to 10!

God, I hate XML

Note to self: don't add GPG signatures to commits and expect it to work with Launchpad imports.

Note to self: for two years you haven't been able to get GPG signatures working for EnhanceIO and you had to force kernel load... do something about that... some year.

PSA: i.stack.imgur.com's SSL certificate expired today. If images aren't loading on site, or sites are taking a while to load, this is why.

yay

imgur.cloudflaressl.com is a SAN on the cert. as well.

what the hell, I'm stuck in the captcha on the website while trying to post an answer
I can't post the answer because it gives me the human verification, and I can't load the captcha for some reason
I'M IN AN INFINITE LOOP

@NathanOsman ??
@IanC maybe the captcha's down too?

@Zacharee1 ????

@NathanOsman ????????

12:35 AM
@Zacharee1 ????????????????

"cannot connect to reCaptcha. Reload the page and try again"

(We're doubling it each time, right?)

not sure which end is the issue

@NathanOsman ????????????????????????????????
@NathanOsman (yes)

12:36 AM
@IanC link?

Brain interface! I want a brain interface!

HEY HEY HEY HEY
CLOSE VOTES NEED DOING

@Zacharee1 it's on the message that loads on the question page. It tries to fetch the captcha from www.google.com, and it says it couldn't connect on a pop up message

I don't know if I get a captcha

Brain Interface?!

12:38 AM
lol

@KazWolfe Yes. Hook your brain up to an Apple device. What could go wrong?

@Zacharee1 and I'm not using tor or anything

@NathanOsman If I hooked myself up to a Mac, I'd turn into a USB-C port

I think I was submitting an answer, and it was taking too long, so I reloaded the page and tried again

@IanC can you just paste the link here? I can't get it

12:39 AM
so what you're saying is that Apple engineers are Sword Art Online fanboys?

now I'm a robot

@Zacharee1 *cough* lightning *cough*

@NathanOsman Macs are moving toward C
@IanC no, in the dev console, for the error

@Zacharee1 BUT I JUST BOUGHT A MAC WITH LIGHTNING PORTS.

12:40 AM
@NathanOsman DAFUQ

@NathanOsman At the same time, we destroy Vim!

tis a double edged sword

@KazWolfe Dupe.

@KazWolfe but do we destroy Vim at the same time?
@NathanOsman CVed

@Zacharee1 where do I get it? I opened the developers tab

12:41 AM
@IanC Chrome or FF?

up to 130% faster graphics
this means that the bootup animation runs at 130% the old framerate.

@KazWolfe so that's up to 50% as fast as a PC
@KazWolfe lol

and everything else is 25% slower
omfg
at least it includes four USB-C ports o.o

@Zacharee1 FF

@IanC find the console somewhere
I use Chrome so idk where it is

12:44 AM
is Thunderbolt DMA or something?

@Zacharee1 I did my 20 close votes an hour ago when I saw you in the room I felt guilty :)

tsk
well you can do more now

no I get 24 hour ban before doing more.
My first day was 20, 1 hour ban, then 20, then 24 hour ban.

@Zacharee1 I'm having trouble finding the error, I did find some links that I think are the captchas links: www.google.com -> www.gstatic.com
man, I give up

did i mention that i hate xml ?
for i in range(0,infinity): print "I hate xml"

12:54 AM
this captcha just won't load, and apparently I'm still a robot
so whatever
@Serg
for i in `seq 1 -1 10`; do echo "I hate XML"; done
would that work?

i think so
except i'd use $() instead of backticks

it didn't even start :o

just use, while true
infinite loop

I think that's the quickest 4 upvotes I've ever gotten ._.
I just read Braiam's profile summary...
> Nothing to say about me... but if you insist, just take a look at my actions, they speak better than I could ever do. Even when I'm not part of the solution, I will not be part of the problem.

1:00 AM
@Serg yeah infinity isn't a number.. I like while (TRUE = TRUE), or in your negative state of XML while (FALSE = FALSE).

Lately, I'm not so sure about that last part. He's been more argumentative than I have

Sounds like Braiam is role playing a drama queen.

bool out_of_range = (step < 0 ? first < last : last < first);
reason why seq doesn't start with seq 1 -1 10

A: i.stack.imgur.com has an expired SSL certificate

Geoff DalgasWe have contacted imgur and they are fixing this as we speak. Thanks for the report.

^ can this be pinned too or am I asking too much?

1:16 AM
@Serg I froze my system with seq :D
and I think I figured why

@IanC how did you manage to do that O_o

seq 1 0 10

@Zacharee1 you're asking too much

@Serg you're not really a trusted source in this regard :p
@IanC is that for (i = 1; i > 0; i++)?

@Zacharee1 I am a very trusted source in this regard, because i deal with source codez every dayz

1:21 AM
@Serg huahuahua

@Zacharee1 even better chihuahua

banana

phone

@Zacharee1 not exactly, I was looking at the `seq` source code, what is going on is that `seq` will check if the number is out of range using:

bool out_of_range = (step < 0 ? first < last : last < first);
this doesn't include the case in which step is equal to 0
if step is equal to 0 and last is bigger than first, it is not out_of_range for sed
and what seems to be happening is that seq will enter an infinite loop, flooding the stdout with the sequence without actually printing it, because it only adds a terminator in the end of the loop

it would be really cool to have a patch with my name on it though :D
should I send an email to "bug reports" or "suggestions"?

it is the infinite loop not returning, so the bash for never gets an list of elements

@Serg go join TNB. It's puntime there

I finally got somewhere, but . . . i think it's pointless

I'm not sure how I crashed my system though, wouldn't it be like while(true)?
maybe bash was holding the list on a buffer and it overflowed?

I'm still blocked and the captcha isn't working

@IanC Nope.

alright, any idea how long those blocks last?
I just accidentally submited an answer twice, it didn't even get posted

Q: Global scripts folder for Nautilus

SergWe know that Nautilus can let user run custom scripts placed in ~/.local/share/nautilus/scripts. This is fine and dandy , but what if I as system administrator want to give all local users access to a single nautilus script ? Is there a global scripts folder or equivalent ?

3:01 AM
@NathanOsman lol
what is gab.ai?

Super sekret Twitter competitor.

@NathanOsman why invite?

@KazWolfe Invite?
No, you can't invite anyone.

why invite only?

It isn't invite only.
You have to sign-up and wait.

@Serg Friend's Mom had a heart attack. Doctor told her that the caramel color in soda clogs up arteries really bad.

Whew. I can't drink carbonated drinks at all.
It's nice to know there's a health benefit to not being able to.

There are lots of health benefits to not being able to. Most drinks are sweetened with High Fructose Corn Syrup, which the body does not recognize as a usable substance. It just turns it into fat.
I'm curious though, how does carbonation cause you problems @NathanOsman?
(if you don't mind)

@Seth It's okay - everybody asks :D For some reason, my tongue reacts to the carbon dioxide in an unusual way and it creates an extremely painful burning sensation.
It feels roughly the same as pouring boiling hot water on my tongue.

@Seth or if you're me, literally nothing :D
like seriously i'm 120 soaking wet and my diet sucks

I'm fine with just about anything else - milk, juice, etc. But as soon as I drink anything carbonated, I know right away what's wrong.

3:53 AM
@Seth heh soda here has actual sugar. Still makes you fat

@JourneymanGeek well it's going to, but it's not the same.

I love me some orange juice though.

Your body can't burn HFCS.
@NathanOsman That's rather odd. I wonder if someone could give you a scientific answer as to what causes that.
@KazWolfe You drink 6 cans a day?

@Seth Meh, I'm curious too but I'm not missing out much when it comes to being healthy :P

true, but I want to know the chemistry :P

3:55 AM
It just makes things a little bit awkward when visiting people over meals.
"Thanks so much for the juice! Uhm... is it carbonated?"

@Seth usually one, but up to 3 sometimes.
but still, i don't try to eat healthy or do things right, and i just stay really thin
oh, wow apt! you're cool! --upgradeable and --upgradable both work
still no fix for that freedesktop bug
now to wait for it to make it into the next build. this is gonna be annoying.
hey, @NathanOsman, is there a way to just compile and patch only one C file/binary instead of all of X?

4:13 AM
Nope. Not without object files for the rest.

gah
then i'll just wait for this bugfix to hit the repos. which will probably be next year.

oh, the www is important
In the context of a HTTP transaction, basic access authentication is a method for a HTTP user agent to provide a user name and password when making a request. == Features == HTTP Basic authentication (BA) implementation is the simplest technique for enforcing access controls to web resources because it doesn't require cookies, session identifiers, or login pages; rather, HTTP Basic authentication uses standard fields in the HTTP header, obviating the need for handshakes. == Security == The BA mechanism provides no confidentiality protection for the transmitted credentials. They are merely encoded...
That's what it's doing --^

5:48 AM
oh I guess I can nmap it too if I use www.
thanks!

hmmm, i haz mimetype ishuz

ah . . . nope, that's just the way it's supposed to work . . . mimetypes module only uses extensions to guess mimetype :(

5:52 AM
HTTP Basic auth works, @PhilipKirkbride, because it demands authentication before any content is served at all.
It's typically never used though, because it has... problems, and standard login forms allow a bit more control/user interaction

I was thinking it'd be great for development sub-domains
if I can just throw it in front of ports that I want restricted
@kaz so because it's http even users with javascript disabled will see it?

Right

6:26 AM
@KazWolfe Don't ever use HTTP Basic Auth without SSL.
Information is sent in plaintext.

and that ^
@NathanOsman don't ever use login forms without SSL

and that ---^
:D

random downvote is random

Slight correction - it is theoretically possible to do a secure login without SSL.
Keybase does this by using your password to sign an auth token client-side.

oh?

6:29 AM
However, it still requires the JavaScript to be served over SSL.

yeah, what if i were to intercept the JS?

Hence the need for SSL.
Just not for the login form.
And I don't necessarily recommend that approach.

so it is impossible to do secured login without SSL :P

So difficult to get wrong.
@KazWolfe Yes, but consider the situation where (for some reason) the page can't be served over SSL but your CDN can serve JS over SSL.
In that specific circumstance - it could work.

Let's Encrypt.
yay for dangerously smart dogs

6:33 AM
Let's Encrypt is great for anything but a large volume of changing subdomains.

and wildcard cert

Well, if your subdomains are fixed, you can just add them as SANs to the cert.
Also...
\o/

iTunes?!
Would you like some music with that restrictive DRM?

Well, okay, fine - I'm sure it's available in other stores too.
It's just the easiest to link to.

what is this? no FLAC?
My ears are not happy.

6:44 AM
Fiber is coming to my home \o/
They apparently call it "the ultra-fast broadband network"

If I ever move back into the non literal middle of nowhere, i'm going to see if L3 will lug fiber out to my house

lol

Also for some reason the microwave is interfering with my wifi now.
It wasn't doing this a while ago, and nothing changed...

I'm in a city that's growing by 800 people a month. AND NO FIBER PROVIDERS.

what is that 'non literal middle of nowhere"?
@NathanOsman RIP

6:48 AM

no fiber= Rest in peices

actually pretty accurate

@PhilipKirkbride You did read Nathan's warnings, right?
Namely, don't use it on non-HTTPS at all.

better?

oh yeah will definitely add letsEncrypt down the road.
can you do SSL with an IP?

yeah you can
but really HTTP Basic sends in plaintext
Which is why it's a bad idea to use it without HTTPS
@Edity still white, not the bg.

6:56 AM
...
hmm

I'm going to add https tomorrow; *get hacked by @kaz

so why the hell is my microwave interfering with wifi all of a sudden?!

idk
if your microwave is near your connecting thing (like mine) you're screwed
its better to just get the ultra-fast broadband

it's not.
that wont help if the microwave kills wifi

7:10 AM
umm
the waves?

i can have a 10 GigE line coming into the house, but the microwave still blocks WiFi.

dump it
xD

But let's try messing my router settings and transmit power.

@muru is that enough compensation? >:)
@KazWolfe put tinfoil around the microwave
or put it in a led container

well i've messed with my wifi settings so let's see.

> "audit: backlog limit exceeded"

so, not sure if i should block one of our neighbors who is siphoning our free guest wifi

The fix for that was the following:
> Shut down machine

Mount the vmdk into another machine

Mount it inside linux

Clear out /var/log/audit/audit.log

Set /etc/audit/audit.rules from 320 to 512

Umount the drive both in linux and in VMWare

Start the machine and disable auditd in chkconfig and stop the service.

@muru is that all to be a mod on vim? ^^

Does anybody agree of has a better idea?

reading it now :=D @blade19899
"Clear out /var/log/audit/audit.log "
I'd backup it 1st before clearing
for the other parts: looks ok :)

7:32 AM
@Rinzwind do I have to mount umount? change the 230(lines?) to 512? restart audit and be done with it?

`sudo auditctl -s` will show what it is set to
320 might be a bit too low so 512. or even 1024 could work too

@Rinzwind yep. Pretty quiet here

@muru and "I like C++, Python and Bash (but use zsh as my primary shell)" does that mean you hate VI(M)? >:-D

@Rinzwind Is that 320 lines, or bytes, or?

@NathanOsman --^

7:42 AM
@Rinzwind Not at l :P
*all

@blade19899 not sure :D It says "320 buffers". have not found out if that is lines.
examples I found suggested to up it to 512 or even 1024 :P
Does it matter if you end up doing "Start the machine and disable auditd in chkconfig and stop the service." ?
