[ SmokeDetector ] Repeating characters in body: printing from arrays vs awk 'NR by paul on askubuntu.com

12:41 AM
Alright, I don't think a single one of those has been useful. I'm turning off the repeating characters one.

That last one was sort of useful.
The "*************" really didn't belong in the post.

I think the thought was for when someone tries to avoid the character limit with things like blllllllllllllllllaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh..
which looks like it happened on that one

Right, I think that was the original intention of the feature.

although I think we get a lot of false positives on it

I agree. I'm just pointing out there are legitimate flags.
Maybe we should change it to just repeating letters, so "--------" won't cause a flag but "aayyyyyiiieee" will.

12:46 AM
hm, I think "..........................." might be common

Yeah. It's trickier than I thought to tell the good ones apart from the bad ones.
Disregard my idea then :P

although I use the hidden text, or non-breaking zero width unicode spaces when going around the system ;)

I wonder if alternating Unicode RTL and LTR characters would work...

maybe, did they ban the zero-width space?

I'm not sure.

12:50 AM
or just as a way to pass the repeating character test

oh, does sleep use seconds instead of milliseconds? lol, that's why it wasn't working as expected. I told it to sleep for 5000 seconds.
@NathanOsman Oh it's a good reason, I just don't think it is worth showing here if it doesn't have a high likelihood of being useful. I can turn it back on if we find more people disagree though.

@Seth Careful, after a certain threshold, it needs to be woken by true love's kiss.

yeah, you have to kill -s 9 the process ;)

Q: How do I decrypt this hard drive?

ErnieIn 2011 I installed Ubuntu server edition on an old Dell that I had laying around. During the install process I was using the gui installer and opted to set disk encryption on the disk drive. During the time that I was using the machine full time (about 3 months) there would be a screen after t...

I'm speaking with a live chat agent at the moment to get it sorted out.
Once I do get it sorted out though, I have some good news.

waits with bated breath

sounds big, like nitroshare online server edition big...

Not quite that big, but it does relate to NitroShare :)

or maybe something cool, like a pi 2?

nitroshare rewrite to qt5 complete? with a static build of qt built in to the installer?

yesterday, by Nathan Osman
Ta-da: https://nitroshare.co/

@hbdgaf Hey, that would be cool too.

maybe - stickers of the logo?

The Qt 5 rewrite is mostly complete and building Qt statically is still a goal once I figure out some issues.

ok, i'm going to stop guessing, and wait...

Yeah, so he's working on my guess at least ;)

1:32 AM
I tried doing that over the weekend but ran into some linking issues with OpenSSL.
I don't think the Qt people can provide a static build that includes OpenSSL.

statically linking openssl is always a problem. i'm beginning to think they make it error out on purpose... so you just link against the dll and if it gets an upgrade, you don't have to be buggered with rebuilding.

Yeah, it's probably better to link to OpenSSL at runtime.

whoops

Okay... got it straightened out.

@Seth you NEED i3 or tmux

So the announcement is... I was able to purchase nitroshare.net !

Someone else had it for the longest time and I was finally able to snatch it up.

Well that's good.

I'll be moving everything over shortly.

@hbdgaf haha, no, I was launching gnome-terminal from a script.

@Seth I did that once, but I used some params to tell it where to spawn.

@NathanOsman cool

1:45 AM
@NathanOsman I'm surprised someone hasn't picked up aking1012.com and trolled me.

I didn't want to say anything until the transaction went through.

I just didn't mean to spawn that many ;)
@NathanOsman yay!
Does anyone know if I can set TEST to true in bash and then do while [ $TEST ]?

Hang on.

why not do while TRUE and break?

I think while [ $TEST = true ] might work.

1:51 AM
@hbdgaf ah, yes, I had forgotten about break.
That'll do what I want!

it's only hard to use in nested loops... so you'll still need to do what you wanted originally eventually...

@hbdgaf For nested loops, there's goto.

hybrid graphics are experimental in Linux :-)

I know but it's still frustrating. I've been trying to make my discrete card to work for hours.
I've gave up. I don't really need the discrete card for msot stuff I do on ubuntu but I would like to be able to work with OpenGL.

If I have a domain, I can get the IP address, but if I only have the IP address, how would I get the domain?

The same way you got the IP.
But domains <=> IP is a many-many relationship

Oli
@Toroidal There are lookup services like this but unless they have a resolution of every domain, they'll never be complete
The other approach (assuming it's a webserver) is hammering it with GET requests for different hosts and brute forcing out a list. Needless to say, this would take a very long time.

Nice - on installing we apparently now have an option to only install/reinstall to an existing Ubuntu partitions.
And - we get an extra extra warning if we decided to erase all and everything.
Still there will people who will manage to delete all of their stuff on installing.

aghh, gnome-terminal is such a pain.
@Takkat I know people don't necessarily like it, but the truth is computers are not for everyone.. :/
At least without training.

lol

@muru I have a semi working script to do that cmatrix stuff, but I cannot get gnome-terminal to stay on the screen long enough to show the screensaver without launching a bash prompt, which prevents it from closing when you're done..

after a while at least I found out what went wrong.

@Seth what does it look like?

#!/bin/bash

if [[ $(xprintidle) -ge 4000 ]]
  then
    xdotool key F11
    cmatrix -s
    wait
    exit
  else
    echo $(xprintidle)
fi
that's the script
I'm calling it through cron every minute:
*/1 * * * * env DISPLAY=:0 gnome-terminal -e "/bin/bash -c '/home/seth/test.sh; /bin/bash -i'"

7:46 PM
@Seth Try another terminal which has an explicit hold option, like xterm or xfce-terminal

@muru ah, yes, I'll try xfce. I did try xterm but it was too dumb to work, apparently..
(I'm not really sure why xterm didn't work..)

Q: Opening a terminal other than xterm, running a command on it, and not closing the terminal after it succesfully finished

geo909I have the following script in my arch linux box: #!/bin/bash xterm -e "sudo pacman -Syu;bash" This will fire up an xterm, and run the command sudo pacman -Syu on it. says you need a custom profile for gnome terminal to hold

@muru still, I'm not sure recommending the installation of xfce4-terminal makes a good solution..

in which case, you could avoid the -e altogether

I'm pretty sure I tried that.
@muru yep, tried that.
The window flashes and then closes.
If you want to take some of my work and run with it please do so, I'm going to have to move on to other things soon.

Q: ClamAV-Test-File virus definition

ToroidalToday I scanned my machine with ClamAV, and this was one of the things that it detected: /home/<username>/clamav-devel/contrib/test/clam_cache_emax.tgz And it detected it as: ClamAV-Test-File So what exactly is this ClamAV-Test-File definition? I have not seen it come up before. OS Informa...

user136984
Does anyone know the answer? :)

@muru Strange, the profile part works when calling it from another terminal, but not from cron..

@Toroidal There's more than one "test that the engine is running" file you can use. Evidently clamav has their own. It's just so they can say "Our reads aren't necessarily subverted all the time for a 100% clean rating even though everything we read is null"

@Seth I can get it done perhaps with two scripts and a profile with hold

8:03 PM
@muru yes, two scripts would probably work. I was trying to avoid that but it might be necessary.

If you're trying to use profile or bashrc environment stuff, you have to source those files in your script to get a cron driven script to "know about them"

another issues appears to be that gnome-terminal passes all additional lines to the first command as arguments, if you use -e.
e.g.:
gnome-terminal --window-with-profile=holdOpen -e "xte 'key F11' && cmatrix -s" &
returns:
xte: invalid option -- 's'
Unknown option 's'
Unknown command '&&'
Unknown command 'cmatrix'

8:31 PM
#!/bin/bash

if (( $(xprintidle) > 4000 ))
then
gnome-terminal --hide-menubar --disable-factory --geometry 1920x1080+0+0 --window-with-profile=Cmatrix
fi

with the profile executing /bin/bash -c 'sleep 1; /usr/bin/cmatrix -s'
worked, @Seth
