@jrg Cool! Please, be extremely honest with your feedback - I'm trying to figure out as much of what makes my videos bad with a few early videos so I can make better ones in the future.
I append to my PATH environment variable in my .bashrc file (Ubuntu v12). I also have a service (Atlassian Bamboo) that relies on the modifications to PATH. When I restart the service (which runs as my local user where the .bashrc changes are made), will it "source" the .bashrc file to freshen up...
the below command when I run from the terminal will keep posting the output to message.log
cf logs broker-analytics > /var/www/cfbrokerlogs/message.log
However, if i close my terminal it will stop working. How do i make it run in the background all the time ?

so i am new to atom and i was trying to figure how to run saved atom io files and then run it as an executable program from terminal?
Right now i am trying to use the command
./filename.py
for python executable files and i am not sure what else to do

Suppose someone suggested an edit to my own question which I approve (and am grateful). Is there any mechanism that allows me to accept the edit straight away that works for users <2k reputation?

@Fabby Wizard sounds good, but I fear in the time needed to code this properly, you could go and answer all open questions from within the last 3 months...
@Fabby Its a free and open-source laptop, that tries to provide just that. Microsoft Windows is as proprietary as can get. Not exactly fitting in the laptops ideology.

apt-get install <list of packages kept back>
this will resolve the kept-back issues and will ask to install additional packages, etc. as was explained by other answers.
@RPiAwesomeness: because some application that you use isn't ready to be upgraded!
The system doesn't throw up this message without reason...
so depends on you what's most important: the upgrade or the application...
Eg. Oracle Virtualbox sometimes won't automatically upgrade your kernel and holds it back, and if you force the issue, you just have to recompile the kernel drivers manually!
