Welp. First Youtube video created, now to upload it. It's definitely not my best work, but heck, nobody's first is.

12:44 AM
Hello Guys,

1:03 AM
@Qasim Ah
@Qasim Go into your account, then click on My Logins
Then click add more logins ...

Cant merge 2 gmail id's

@Seth Is this something you can do?
@Qasim I'm not sure then. You'd have to talk to one of the site mods.

hmm ok
Thanks

Sry :(
@Seth or @Oli are both Ask Ubuntu Mods, try talking to them :)

Q: How to request for merging my 2 askubuntu accounts?

TobsonI accidentally created a second account because I had forgotten about my first account, but now I want to merge them and keep single account. I want this account to be merged into http://askubuntu.com/users/109523/tobson thanks

1:18 AM
@Qasim There you go :D

:)

First YT vid!
Hint: It's awful :P

1:59 AM
@RPiAwesomeness added to watch later.

@jrg Cool! Please, be extremely honest with your feedback - I'm trying to figure out as much of what makes my videos bad with a few early videos so I can make better ones in the future.

jrg
@RPiAwesomeness ok.
yeah, the first ones will be bad.
i know a guy who did 30 of them before he finally published the first one
and that was only because he was pressured into doing it.
(I've got a few dozen invites that have piled up over the years.)

2:16 AM
@RPiAwesomeness nice, it's not too bad :)
try editing out the win10 bit, that trails a bit when you could just say "use the recent - currently version #.##"
I really like that you had the main windows you were using full-screen

Q: Do programs source .bashrc when run?

void.pointerI append to my PATH environment variable in my .bashrc file (Ubuntu v12). I also have a service (Atlassian Bamboo) that relies on the modifications to PATH. When I restart the service (which runs as my local user where the .bashrc changes are made), will it "source" the .bashrc file to freshen up...

3:02 AM
@Mateo Thanks! Good point. I may take the feedback I get and edit the video & re-upload
@jrg Thanks for the invite!
I'm not technically old enough yet to have a job, but that'll be handy for the future!

user3846091the below command when I run from the terminal will keep posting the output to message.log cf logs broker-analytics > /var/www/cfbrokerlogs/message.log However, if i close my terminal it will stop working. How do i make it run in the background all the time ? The command simply prints the log...

How can I prevent autoplay in 14.10? The media tab was removed from nautilus..
errm, gsettings to the rescue, this surprisingly had me baffled for a bit
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.media-handling automount false

Did you find a solution @iKlsR?
Get your new lappy yet @jrg?

@Seth Yes, I used gsettings

cool ;)

Man, compass and numix are to die for. I don't want to close my pc.
Long time nix user, also dabbled with ubuntu 8 way back, now mostly arch running containers but never really got into the customization side of things.

sanster9292so i am new to atom and i was trying to figure how to run saved atom io files and then run it as an executable program from terminal? Right now i am trying to use the command ./filename.py for python executable files and i am not sure what else to do

omg im going to @HackToHell

Uhm'

lol

What do you mean ? :P

im going to hack to hell.

ah ;p

7:44 AM
@RPiAwesomeness: I wouldn't say it's awful... I would even say it's good... ;-)

8:32 AM
edited.

dear smoke detector, don't be so touchy ;)

9:09 AM
@Takkat: talking to yourself is just a bit weird when other people are around, but when you start talking to bots, I'd start looking for some professional help... ;-)

@Fabby Bots are never rude to me ;)

:D And they never disagree! ;)

they may (in secret)...
I am so scared.... by the end of the week I will have to install Windows on my father in law's netbook.

Yes, only amongst themselves...
And how do you feel about that?

I should tell him of Ubuntu Professional 64-bit all Service Packs included.

9:12 AM
>:)

but I will not install Ubuntu on that machine because I don't want to support it.
They want Windows, they get it. But it will come without warranty and no support from my side.

Use Rinzwind's approach: Ask money for supporting Window$, give the Ubuntu support for free... ;-)

@Fabby \o

;-)

@Fabby my Windows-supporting would be far too expensive... I wouldn't do it for less.

9:19 AM
@Takkat want me to install Windows? 50 euro and 50 euro for every next hour

(y)

@Rinzwind lol - it may take some hours...

@Takkat 2.5 is my fastest (so rounded to 3 hours)
damn. software update for a wopping 8kb :P
that's a waste of bandwidth if I ever saw one

Q: How to accept an edit on my own question

Adam RyczkowskiSuppose someone suggested an edit to my own question which I approve (and am grateful). Is there any mechanism that allows me to accept the edit straight away that works for users <2k reputation?

10:25 AM
How do I keep my master and gh-pages in sync. The easiest way?

Oli
@blade19899 switch to the gh-pages branch, rebase on master and push... and switch back to master

@Oli Thats sounds like a terminal thing to do. I'm at work, just need to do this via GitHub. The NewOS gh-page is for now not linking correctly.
Yep, those links mentions terminal commands. no way on getting tthings synced via GitHub? Just need to sync ones, to fix one bug that breaks the site!

Oli
They're git "things". I don't use github that much. I don't know.

10:41 AM
@Oli I'll just fix it when I get home! Thanks!

@KasiyA :(

But it's Very good ;)

@Fabby Wizard sounds good, but I fear in the time needed to code this properly, you could go and answer all open questions from within the last 3 months...

@KasiyA But, I'm very broke.

How comes I still have active flags from 5 days ago??? Are the mods in here really that slow or that busy?

11:27 AM
@ByteCommander busy

I would offer some help, but they don't let me.... :( :P
Already fulfilled today's amount of 20 First Post reviews.
Will this limit increase or even vanish when I got more rep?

just a q of the record: did Br.aiam stop answering questions and participating in debates?

@don.joey he always did debates :-)

[ SmokeDetector ] Offensive answer detected: Why is everything crashing? by Tiago on askubuntu.com

@blade19899: I have no problem... I was quoting from the puri.sm web site: they haven't even tried to install Windows on it yet... ;-)
@ByteCommander: not the mods: the reviewers...

11:39 AM
@Fabby Its a free and open-source laptop, that tries to provide just that. Microsoft Windows is as proprietary as can get. Not exactly fitting in the laptops ideology.

@ByteCommander Not everyone does reviews, and if the queue is below 1000, we can only review 20/day... If you give me the Q's, I'll add some of my votes outside of the review queue
@blade19899 I read the entire article!
:P

@Fabby I skimmed the entire article!

I was just quoting from their website...

(and I thought it was funny)
But it went totally over your head! :P ;-)

11:42 AM
@Fabby It is funny! Kinda hope that no hacks Windows on it.
@Fabby It did. haven't had my coffe yet.

@ByteCommander: at my level, I still have limits... ;-)

@Fabby No, thanks. It would be just useful if I ran out of votes and still had some reviews that would need one...

Lemme know: the other day 5 guys in the chat room got a spam post removed without intervention of the Moderator...
Just rallying the masses was fine!

At your level? You have less than 4,5k and here are some people running around with far over 20k... Okay, I still have some work to do to reach either of them...

@ByteCommander are there ppl with 20k+ rep here? can I meet them?

11:46 AM
@Rinzwind his last answers date from Xmas day

> User Rinzwind 82,215

@Rinzwind Oli has almost 120k!

I only got 7,709, but that just because Au comes second to everything(School, work, bills, friends, life in general)

@don.joey nope. Jan 23rd (on U+L)

@don.joey what do you want to say?

11:48 AM
@don.joey he is not an Ubuntu user. I think he is using debian so maybe the started focusing on debian :)

@Rinzwind :)
@ByteCommander no offense, but it takes a few years (or at least months) on this site to know what I am hinting at without saying anything
@ByteCommander don't worry, old stories

I do miss the occasional rant in chat :-P

@don.joey I won't worry as soon as I'm sure you're not talking about me...

@ByteCommander It is not about you, honestly

11:53 AM
@don.joey okay, I'll believe it ;D

@Rinzwind It did bring about liveliness, too bad for the tone sometimes (but that could have been a language issue)

Agreed on the 1st part. Absolutely agree on the 2nd part. But I doubt that last past _O-
liveliness is good :) argueing is good. Means ppl care.

:) point taken

not showing up is bad _O-

@ByteCommander: and the question here is going to be a proposal to the StackExchange network to change it on all their sites. They have to do this, but I'm trying to see if anyone is interested in the proposal by counting the number of votes it gets)
@Rinzwind: about the now showing up bit: thisquestion is about a wizard and you didn't even give it a meagre 1 upvote? >:)

12:05 PM
@Fabby I hardly ever visit meta >:) I leave that to the mods

12:17 PM
there have a +1 :=D
I bet that would annoy the spam posters a lot :)

@iKlsR Dude, nice. That looks great!
@Fabby Thank you :)

Looks slick

The following packages have been kept back:
  easytag ffmpeg gir1.2-rb-3.0 gir1.2-totem-1.0 librhythmbox-core8

  rhythmbox-mozilla rhythmbox-plugin-cdrecorder rhythmbox-plugin-magnatune
  rhythmbox-plugins totem totem-common totem-mozilla totem-plugins vlc
  vlc-data vlc-nox vlc-plugin-notify vlc-plugin-pulse
Why would all those be held back?
There weren't any 404 errors when running apt-get

Q: "The following packages have been kept back:" Why and how do I solve it?

jfoucherI just added a PPA repository for the development version of the GIMP, but I get this error The following packages have been kept back: gimp gimp-data libgegl-0.0-0 libgimp2.0 Why and how can I solve it so that I can use the latest version instead of the one I have now?

do-release-upgrade does that
But why would it do that...

A: "The following packages have been kept back:" Why and how do I solve it?

user88285Whenever you receive from the command apt-get upgrade the message The following packages have been kept back: then to upgrade one or all of the kept-back packages, without doing a distribution upgrade (this is what dist-upgrade does, if I remember correctly) is to issue the command: apt-get i...

Whenever you receive from the command apt-get upgrade the message

The following packages have been kept back:

then to upgrade one or all of the kept-back packages, without doing a distribution upgrade (this is what dist-upgrade does, if I remember correctly) is to issue the command:

apt-get install <list of packages kept back>

this will resolve the kept-back issues and will ask to install additional packages, etc. as was explained by other answers.

@RPiAwesomeness: because some application that you use isn't ready to be upgraded!
The system doesn't throw up this message without reason...
so depends on you what's most important: the upgrade or the application...
Eg. Oracle Virtualbox sometimes won't automatically upgrade your kernel and holds it back, and if you force the issue, you just have to recompile the kernel drivers manually!
(but if you don't, VBox will stop working)
As simple as that!
:P

;)
@Fabby The thing is, in the case of this, they're just audio applications - nothing to do with Virtualbox
Lets just hope it doesn't break everything
Oh, there are Kernel updates.
Oh well.

E.G. = Exempla Gratia = I'm just giving an example

@Fabby Yes :)

(because I know you use VBox: I just saw it in your video!)
:P :P :P
You have to make an informed decision on what you want...
I'm not going to tell you beforehand what to do...
I'm going to let you fail and then come and LOL
>:)

1:04 PM
@Fabby True. Thanks for telling me that, I'll keep it in mind.

And in life, whenever faced with choices, there is always an additional choice with everything:
"Just don't do anything" ;-)

That works quite often :)

not always, but sometimes it does...

Did you see anything I should fix on my video (aside from the black bars & changing audio levels)?

What black bars??? (I didn't run it full screen though)
Audio was good enough, didn't notice anything...

1:20 PM
@Fabby Because I have a 16:10 aspect ratio (weird size: 1440x900) on my monitor, there are bars along the edges (I think)
Yay! New Gunnerkrigg chapter!
Error! Bad return status for module build on kernel: 3.13.0-44-generic (x86_64)
Consult /var/lib/dkms/nvidia-340/340.65/build/make.log for more information.
Uhhhh
That's bad, right?

1:44 PM
@RPiAwesomeness: I didn't even notice! :P
for the nvidia: roll back to the previous driver...
I've got:
apt-cache search nvidia | grep-red --ignore-case binary | grep-blue version
nvidia-304 - NVIDIA legacy binary driver - version 304.125
nvidia-331 - NVIDIA binary driver - version 331.113
nvidia-340 - NVIDIA binary driver - version 340.65
nvidia-346 - NVIDIA binary driver - version 346.35

@Fabby Sooo...I need to roll back?
Or can I just leave it?

I would roll back, reboot and then try to roll forward again....

Okay, how would I do this?

(But I'm an anally-retentive old fart)
:D

I'd rather maintain stability then have the newest drivers...

1:48 PM
apt-get install nvidia-340

I thought I removed the xorg-edgers PPA though...

they're quite good...

strange that I'm getting an update

ah!
No...
OK:
Don't remove the xorg-edgers

nvidia-340 is already the newest version.

1:49 PM
they give you choice!

@Fabby I did a while ago.
It's known to cause black screen & login screen issues

ok, then the system already rolled back automatically...
for me it's solved them....
yeah, every now and then I stil get dome screen-tearing, but then I log out and back in again and it's gone...
just to be sure:
nvidia-settings --version

version 346.22

version 346.35 (buildd@lgw01-01) Sat Jan 17 20:13:12 UTC
(thinking)
OK, I've never done this without the xorg-edgers PPA.
because what I normally do is:
roll back
reboot
roll forward...
You have on-board Intel graphics, right?
(and a screw-driver ready?)

Eh. I really don't care. The drivers I have now work just fine and they give me the performance I want.
No, GTX 750 Ti

1:54 PM
(so you can remove the GTX 750 Ti)
if push comes to shove?
some on-board graphics?

@Fabby Yes
Oh, my eye AT&T

jrg
@RPiAwesomeness hey
i can live with 3Mbps

We're paying bloody $30 and getting 0.6 MB/s

jrg
if there are no bandwidth caps

@jrg Yeah. It definitely has to be cap-free. I download enough and having better internet would just encourage that :D

jrg
1:56 PM
And it's a constant, guaranteed speed.

@RPiAwesomeness first try to do the upgrade aain...
if that fails: reboot and try again

That's the one advantage to what we have now, no caps and a decent ping if I'm the only one on

if that fails: take out the nvidia and try again

jrg
@RPiAwesomeness "decent ping"?

Yeah. Sub-50millisecond (or whatever) if I'm the only one on

1:57 PM
sub-50 to where?

Valve servers are pretty much all I play on, so wherever Valve has servers for CS:GO

@RPiAwesomeness shout if you need me.

Ahem.
According to this, we should be getting at least 10 Mbps for what we're paying....
I'd be fine with 3!
Or even 1 for that matter.

jrg
@RPiAwesomeness oh wow dude.

Yeah!
Honestly, we're getting ripped off
My parents have said that if I can research it and present a plan, they'll consider it. This should help...some...hopefully
'murican ISPs man...
ugh
#Graphs&ChartsTime
I would honestly put some money into the hat for the installation fee if my parents agreed to this.
Maybe we can get some kind of discount for already having their DSL
Nah. They wouldn't be that good of a company
Well, balls. It's capped.
WHY ARE DATA CAPS CONSIDERED AN OKAY THING?
I mean, 250GB isn't bad, but it's still a cap.
Yup:
If we upgrade, we'd be paying the same, but be getting 5 times the speed for our internet.

2:14 PM
XD
that's pretty close to what happened when we switched to fibre

I see
So 30$/Month?

Yeah, but that price is gonna jump to $41 a month in April. DANGIT USA ISPs!

That's pretty amazing compared to Indian ISP'S

If American legislators get what they want, in a few years you'll be just paying by the byte, just like water and electricity...

@AmithKK Really? How so?

2:16 PM
It's pretty crappy compared to EU ISPs

@Fabby Yeah. America sucks when it comes to internet
Like, monkey balls sucks

You don't suck, it's just expensive, unless you're living in Austin...

I pay roughly the same for 4MB/s @ 30GB Cap, after which you get 512KB/s for infinity xD

gigabit is under 50 dollars here ._.

jrg
2:17 PM
No, America sucks for internet.
f that.

Singapore!
That's a city!
easy...

Where is the Mega Chat client?

U-verse Internet requires a Wi-Fi Gateway Wi-Fi Gateway $7.00/mo.
Ummm.

'murica is big!

Excuse me?
Wonderful. Another cost

jrg
2:18 PM

@Fabby: and our government periodically decides we need this infrastructure, builds it, and spins it off

jrg
So uh, I haven't seen this at work in a long time.

nvm found it

@JourneymanGeek You lucky ducks

jrg
(I moved to another job in July, and don't have gigabit anymore. So painful.)

2:19 PM
@jrg Wait. You have a high upload than download??

jrg
@RPiAwesomeness yes, i do.
probably network congestion.

:D I just noticed the same

That's so weird

@RPiAwesomeness: I don't, @jrg does

jrg
it's 9AM on a business line.

2:19 PM
mine's nearly symmetric ;p

There

This might just be the fastest I've seen xD
Atleast around in this room

Oh my gosh
And the issue is, the options are so limited out here where I live (AT&T & Comcast) that they can charge whatever the bloody heck they choose because there's no competition :P
Oh well

Thing is, you reach a point where all the servers you're streaming data become slower than your own Download speed

2:23 PM
@AmithKK It's not the fastest I've ever seen, but pretty fast...

Yeah. Google Fibre?

No COLT Telecom!

How much?

1Gbit FD 2500€/month

2:25 PM
Mega-secure, but they need Javascript for their site to work!
:D :D :D

jrg
@AmithKK I will need to find it, but I had a 800/800 speedtest once.
at the old job.

@jrg How much do you get at hotcards?
I'm sorry if I got the name wrong :P

jrg
@AmithKK internet?
or pay?

Internet Speeds :P

jrg
both are stupid.
technically speaking, it's a 10/10

2:28 PM
@jrg ikr

Ah

jrg
we pay for a 100/100.
the bill says a 10/10

That's a ripoff xP

jrg
and we get a 2/17
#dontaskmehowthatmathworks

:D

2:30 PM
Did anyone here try speedify?
Welcome to India xD

@AmithKK It's just bonding...

And Happy Republic Day to all the Indians here. \o/

@AmithKK Better than mine :)
Grade: F-
However. I really ought to stop complaining.
I live in America (which is still one of the free-est countries in the world) and I have internet.

@RPiAwesomeness: though with the goats and the speed you have, it might as well be Africa!

@Fabby ikr :)

2:32 PM
;-) >:)

@Fabby Yep. Disabled Js and the entire website is a blank page.
Disappointing
