Anyone familiar with alacarte?
It names all of its .desktop files alacarte-made.desktop, alacarte-made-1.desktop, etc. When I try to change the file's name the panel stops seeing it.

Question for everyone! Should I get the better power in the AMD Radeon R9 270 or get the driver-secure GTX 750Ti?

12:30 AM
@JourneymanGeek I don't like panels everywhere

12:45 AM
@Braiam WAT? you don't like panels? try i3. I like it, but it takes a significant amount of getting used to

@Braiam TWM! and just a terminal by default

1:40 AM
@hbdgaf you don't like panels everywhere? yes, I don't like a thingy with more than 1 panel

Unity ftw!
It has a launcher.. but that isn't a panel :P

@Seth What do you think about the GPU question? GTX 750Ti or Radeon R9 270?

I don't know anything about either, so with that said go with the one you know works well with Ubuntu.
As long as it isn't too bad.

That's my issue. It's a case of AMD drivers vs NVIDIA drivers
I don't know which to go with :P
Less compatibility (maybe) and more Performance ... or ... sure compatibility and less performance

as someone who has a lower end Nvidia card and always has issues, get one with sure compatibility. Doesn't matter how good your card is if the drivers are terrible.

1:48 AM
ah
I think @JourneymanGeek said he had a GTX 660 that worked fine...
bah on companies not supporting Linux

I have a Quadro 1000m FWIW

@RPiAwesomeness: That is correct

@RPiAwesomeness just check the mesa page about support
and the radeon one

??
Where would I find that/what do I search for? Mesa Radeon R9 270?

@RPiAwesomeness x.org/wiki/RadeonFeature for example

1:55 AM
Ah :)

if you want to go the free way about nvidia drivers, this is nouveau page nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki

Would I get better performance from the proprietary AMD drivers or community?
That's something else I have to consider

the former

really
Ah
Decisions decisions.
I'm pretty set in on the CPU + Mobo + RAM. Now the issue becomes the GPU. Dangit Hackintosh. Why can't you be 750Ti compatible?

@RPiAwesomeness I got a 760 works great and was on the steam machine spec

@RPiAwesomeness: just use the onboard for hackintosh ;)

Q: What to do if a question looks potentially dangerous?

luchonachoFor example, this question might be a great example of someone wanted to break into a system but masking the question as a "problem". In this case, assuming I can provide an answer, should I refrain to do so?

Q: Running Linux on Smartphone

Steven WoodI have recently thought about buying a cheap second hand smartphone and install Linux on it as an experiment. I am sure this has been asked a lot but I cant seem to find an answer: Is there anyway to make normal phone calls / text messages and connect to 3G (ie use it as a phone) with Linux ins...

There seems relations (similarities) between questions this , this and this. Is there any should be closed as duplicate ? or it is ok at current position?

hi everybody

I've reported a bug, as I reported bug 1st time I've no idea how it handles. status:new and importance:undecided and unassigned. Is there any (status,importance etc.) should be updated? (is there anything which I'm missing) help to status:conform (or not?)

scp is very slow with vpn.
how to solve it?

I found one question as highly rated unanswered ; Is it suitable for closing as off-topic (for bug-reporting?)

./configure
make
make install
possibly even sudo make install on the last part

did that too
didn't work

what was the error that it had

I'm on windows now so I can't remember
I'll do it again and tell you

I'm trying now on mine, in trusty. tell you what happens
not maintained, I doubt you will get it to work

:(
okay

6:28 PM
maybe if you can hunt down those things on the list, but I think those are older versions you would need to manually find them
too bad he didn't mention what version it worked on last...

@Mateo What do you mean? Steam Spec?
@JourneymanGeek As in, change it in the BIOS when I boot, or will OS X automatically switch to that when I boot?

Q: Have the StackExchange navbar stuck to top as we scroll down

OxwiviAs we navigate to various answers and comments, going back to the homepage or reviewing the next notification item requires us to unnecessarily scroll to the top. I suggest we use CSS to keep the navbar always accessible.

if this complet enough: http://askubuntu.com/questions/524418/how-would-i-use-tar-for-full-backup-and-restore-with-system-on-ssd-and-home-on-h
Or did I miss something obvious?

@Rinzwind lol! I was actually just going to research that once I finished my report on the Federalist Papers! Thanks a ton! :D

@RPiAwesomeness lol :D
not the best tool to use for a backup... tar :P

lol. I'd guess not :D
Have you ever done that?
I'm planning on building my PC w. just an SSD at first, then purchasing a 1TB HDD and moving /home to there and having the OS on the SSD.
Any idea on what would be the best way to go about that? :D
Also, my modified version of OliverSalzburg's dark chat theme looks pretty good on Ubuntu. Reminds me of the color scheme from the early versions of Ubuntu (Brown + Orange)

7:48 PM
@RPiAwesomeness nope. not for a full system
@RPiAwesomeness I would just reinstall :-P

@RPiAwesomeness aka, one of the cards they used in the steam machine extremetech.com/gaming/…

@Rinzwind Yeah, well you don't have the internet I do :P
@Mateo Ah
@Mateo Do you think it would be good for minor 3D graphics rendering? I'd like to dabble w. Blender, but I'm not sure if it would handle it.

Q: Why is my application being cut off?

user1617942I'm running a Java based application on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, and for some reason it keeps getting cut off in the top left portion of the screen. I'm running this in VSphere, with VMWare Tools installed. Java is also properly installed. I tried replicating the problem on a Mint, Ubuntu 14, and anot...

Wish I could afford a GTX 780

@RPiAwesomeness the 760 is good, that is the one I got

8:04 PM
How does it handle heavy gaming/3D? Or haven't you tried?
Never mind
I'm trying to decide between a 650 and a Radeon R9 270X
I like the performance on the Radeon, but it's AMD. Like I've said, GAH!

Q: ./a.out && echo $? only prints return value if return = 0

Harvinderecho $? in the following scenario does not display the return value, i.e. 1. echo "int main() { return 1; }" > foo.c gcc foo.c && ./a.out && echo $? However, echo $? works when the program returns 0. Why is this? Note: If you do another echo $? after the code above, you get the desired output...

@RPiAwesomeness 150mbit here :=)

Heyo, got a slight problem here. Whenever I start up my Ubuntu 14.04, my displays decide to overlap each other, not unlike this: http://gyazo.com/16ff5c0461219cb3e96015d1a4a89b6b
An easy fix is to go to the display settings and drag the small screen away from the inside of the big screen, but it gets annoying. Anyone?

11:49 PM
I.. don't understand how that happens.
@ton.yeung I once locked my self out doing that once..
