ragi have a docker container and i am trying to enable sshd and log in with a new user rag. it appears that as user 'rag' i am not able to execute /bin/bash. i am not sure why. i cannot figure out whether apparmor plays a part but I remember that I set apparmor in complaining mode for docker binary....

is it the problem with ssh

Why were you not asked to set a password at user creation?

I don't know but I did the command again and it work
I think I did miss type it

@Whaaaaaat help pleas
@Seth hello can you help me with ssh

@Andrew Please, don't be a help vampire and ping random people asking for help, you know better. I don't have time right now, but it looks like you aren't using the correct password. Make sure you are typing it correctly. Also make sure the user and IP are correct.

@Seth it is the right password and the right IP
@Whaaaaaat are you there?

12:38 AM
@Whaaaaaat the issure is mathcubes@MathCubes-Laptop:~$ ssh olivia@192.168.1.131
Permission denied (publickey).
It work locally

yes?
wrong password. doublecheck it.
@Seth How does this answer look?

A: Gvfs / samba lookup slow since update to 14.04

WhaaaaaatSolving this problem has had mixed results. If you try mounting DIRECTLY using CIFS, you'll see that it is about 3x faster. Compare CIFS to direct disc write. Many people have had this problem, as shown by a quick Google search. Things said to work: Some people have had success recompiling ...

12:59 AM
I'm back.

Hi
back

@Lucio: our phone numbers are in the format +1 (xxx) yyy-yyyy.
Where "xxx" is a 3-digit area code.

@Whaaaaaat eh, I guess it's ok.. but it looks like all it is is a collection of links.

1:17 AM
@NathanOsman xxx yyy zzzz where x and y within x are location awareness and z is endpoint.

@Seth Yeah, it's a lot of data to put in one post. Also, there is no ONE definitive way to fix the problem.
@NathanOsman You're in canada?

at least that's how it's supposed to work.

@Whaaaaaat: yes.
Canada technically owns the land that the geographic north pole rests on.
^---- random trivia

mhm.

@Whaaaaaat US phone numbers are the same way.

1:30 AM
@Seth If you look at my profile with your Mod powers, you'll see I live in the US.

1:44 AM
I think we should have a WiFi community wiki.

@Whaaaaaat I'm going to trust you there.

For like the "odd" chipsets.

For some reason I thought you were from Europe.

why would you think that?

@Whaaaaaat We already have one about diagnosing issues, one for broadcom and one for ralink. Anything else?
@Whaaaaaat I guess I erroneously gathered it from past conversations.

1:45 AM
@Seth A "master" one for getting them to work.
It focuses on how to get them initially to set up.

I think one per chipset is a better idea.

We might be able to add a troubleshooting section.
Well, there are some people who don't even know what chipset they have.
They just know they have "The Wi-Fi".
On an unrelated note, why is LG's tag wiki

Consumer Electronics manufacturer of cell phones, washers and dryers, and many other products. See lg.com for more information.
Is it for the question "My Ubuntu-enabled washer can not install packages from PPAs?"

I think that may have been copy pastaed

1:49 AM
Also, can we add an autocorrect from Ubunto to Ubuntu?

Also other than the most bleeding edge WiFi adaptors and broadcom, WiFi just works for me

Still, it might be a good idea,

And you could probably have a general community FAQ explaining identification, then link to model specific questions

Should I make that?
@Seth @JourneymanGeek Is there a way to specify the order in which community wiki answers appear?

@NathanOsman so Santa is Canadian?

1:58 AM
Oh gods.
Also, can I have some sample lshw outputs for different WiFi adapters?

WARNING: you should run this program as super-user.

??

then a bunch of stuff...
;)

So, can I please have some sample lshw WiFi entries?

taking the plunge, and multibooting my phone, very stressful

2:05 AM
multirom is steady.

but i'm not ;)

Just don't type fastboot erase bootloader.
We won't help you.

I have it up, looks nice. now to add images
I like the new interface

@Mateo Can I please have your wi-fi LSHW?

this desktop doesn't have wifi

2:11 AM
meh.

want the ethernet?

no. it needs to be wifi
i'm trying to create a community wiki.

ah

If you see any, can you please tell me?
Also, with lspci, are WiFi adapters ALWAYS called "Network controller"?

2:33 AM
So yes. This is my challenge to you. What are the lspcis for the natively unsupported cards?

A: My wireless/WiFi connection does not work. What information is needed to diagnose the issue?

@Seth I know about that Seth.
I'm talking about a generic INSTALLATION topic that's actually a community wiki,

I really don't see why we need one.

To put everything in one place.
But I do see where that comment comes from
WTF?
damn audits

Here's an RTV for you guys. Thanks!!

A: Ubuntu 12.04 media player does not show video?

WhaaaaaatThis sounds like a codec problem. Try this command: sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras Also, you should try a better video player. I recommend VLC. sudo apt-get install vlc Have fun!

Q: Blocking questions about Wubi?

WhaaaaaatWubi was discontinued as of 13.04. 13.04 was marked as end-of-life in January of 2014. So, why do we still have questions about Wubi? What is the purpose if Wubi is now off-topic? I think that questions about Wubi should be blocked, as there is no use for them anymore.

Q: iozone runs fail with “No such file or directory” errors

MehrnazI want to start using iozone to benchmark an aufs filesystem on a virtual machine on ubuntu. I tried following the manual to use relevant parameters, but I keep getting a weird error on most runs. I wrote this command with "root" user: iozone -R -b bench_u01_test.xls -r 8k -s 1g -l 2 -u 5 but...

4:55 AM
Isn't this off-topic? (as suitable for reporting Bug)

5:06 AM
How old is this image?

@Pandya No. I want to keep my rep.
@Andrew Wow! CRTs!
I love sticking screwdrivers in em and watching the pretty lights.

Yea
@Pandya It is off topic

5:25 AM
@Andrew Meh.

Why

ATI.
Also, no Xeon processor.

IT is the best Bang for the buck.

no.

Xeon you can't overclock

5:26 AM
More powerful as a base.
I just think you chose the most expensive possible parts to be around $6k.

yea
IT is the setup too

Expensive != Quality

True
But find me a video card chipset that doesn't do better than a Radeon R9 295X2. It even out preforms the TItan Z

<insert any NVIDIA card here>

IT is half the price and You get more out of it

5:29 AM
Unless you are doing extreme hardcore 3d stuff, this is overkill.
Also, Raedons have terrible driver support.

No 4k Utra gaming

You will never be able to unlock its full powers.
LOL WASTE OF MONEY.

Why

1080p is good enough.
Also, you can get away with less than 3GHz if you're smart.

Yea right I have better Eye sight than 2020. I like to keep my font size at 5 or 6 any lower it becomes to pixelize.

5:32 AM
So what? You're SO GOOD that you can see individual pixels?

Yea like 1-3.5 inches away

Yes. 1080p is good enough.

For you
I also what to get invol with image editing

No games use true 4k yet.

It can't go higher than 60hz due to the wire is the bottlenuck

5:34 AM
Yes. Overkill.
Your processor is too powerful.

I also like to program.

Also, gamers with that high power PC are either gamer gods or newbs.

Yea
I want DDR4 SDRAM

I think you're the latter.

What it is just futre proofing
What do you think of

5:37 AM
Tue 4k games do not exist.
Futureproofing? 2 years and that computer is low-end.

I only game like once in the week or the mouth
that quickly

Yes. That is way overkill.

yea right

Yes.
I have a LAPTOP that gets the same approximate power.
Power management, overclocking, and special OSes for gaming.

I have a laptop too... That is junk

5:40 AM
3GHz processor. Can handle almost anything.

Dell Inspiron R17 n7110
But the speed
Even a 1GHz processor can handle almost anything

Sorry, I'm just raging because I have no money for a good PC.

I don't either It is just my dream setup
I don't even Have a job

I'm stuck with this laptop. It's good, but it has its flaws. But, power management can really boost the game.

Laptop are junktops

5:43 AM
Dedicated graphics + killing nonessential processes really improves it.

Yea but nice like upgrading
You can't even replace the montherboard for a better one that support a better cpu or an APU

If I had ~8 grand, I will be the envy of the entire university.

Is this a joke? newegg.com/Product/…-na--na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID=

You're paying for the LED.

LED?

5:47 AM
-Dynamic blue LED light
That is fast RAM though.

8GiB for 2k is not wroth it.
Just get DDR4
That laptop is the best that I have seen It never get hotter than 80c but you can't upgrade the CPU nor the GPU

Also, you can use RAID for much more space.

a lot cheaper
newegg.com/Product/…-na--na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID=
Yea but not much performance out of it.

Corsair vengeance stuff is good.

I would wait like a year before getting any new laptop for DDR4

5:54 AM

I still use DDR in my old server

Its clearly an old server ;p

Wow
What did computer use before DDR SDRAM 1?

My old server is DDR2 (though I suspect DDR3 was out by then) and my new one uses laptop DDR3
SD ram
and before that EDO ram

6:03 AM
Sorry I just was born in 1999 so I wasn't a live them.

Do you have your parent's permission to be on Disney.com?

LOL
I don't watch TV
And I hate Disney movies
@JourneymanGeek @Whaaaaaat When do you think that HDDs are going to be dead on Desktops?

Never.

5 Years

6:05 AM
Someone will always be too cheap to buy SSDs.

Hard drives still give you much better cost for capacity

I think like in 5 years GiB/$ will be cheaper with SSDs than HDDs.

@Andrew: not really

Until someone perfects 1PB HDDs.

SSDs don't scale well with smaller process sizes

6:07 AM
well
6 years than

Until it is possible to CHEAPLY and QUICKLY produce SMALL memory chips with large storage space, it will never happen.

I think SSDs are superior storage/system drives, but I prefer spinning rust for bulk storage

Its the 2/3 thing:
Cheap to Produce | Quick to Produce | Small
Choose any two.

I do think laptop 2.5 inch spinning rust drives are going out

6:08 AM
Agreed.

If I have a ssd in my Laptop it would be dead by how much I reformat.
agreed

Another problem with SSDs.

Or even SSDs, mSATA/M2 is a better form factor

There is a max write limit.

I like M2

6:09 AM
@Whaaaaaat: which realistically is pretty hard to hit on SLC and MLC drives

Secondly, it is unsafe. There is no way to SAFELY and PERMANENTLY erase stuff off of SSDs.

@Whaaaaaat: eh, thats debatable

I hate Sata SSDs by how much space is erased in the drive it shelf

I've seen, and quoted studies that say both

A: What shredding utility can I use?

Journeyman GeekWith conventional hard drives, a single wipe with zeros may be enough The 'multiple wipes' method assumes that you're using older drives (with larger magnetic domains). The 'definitive' paper on data destruction by guttmann suggests 35 different patterns - which are effective on different types ...

(disclaimer - My own answer, and one of the papers quoted was written by my course co-ordinator)

Gutmann is for babies.

6:11 AM
Spin it up and take a hummer to those patters

Guttmann with modern drives is about as much science as sacrificing goats when installing a new drive

No. 128 overwrites.

No data will be recoverable after that

Also, guttmann actually makes sense for the time it was written, assuming you didn't know the encoding of the drive
MUCH bigger data domains, and more variation
And I quote Guttmann as myth, generally
@Andrew: with a standard hard drive, a single wipe is enough
the problem with some SSDs is they don't actually implement the sata secure erase command correctly

just make dust out of it
take it into the blander

varshit dusadI was trying to use ls command in my ubuntu 14.04 but it keeps on showing ls: unrecognized option '--color=auto' BusyBox v1.21.1 (Ubuntu 1:1.21.0-1ubuntu1) multi-call binary. Usage: ls [-1AaCxdLHlinsehrSXvctu] [-w WIDTH] [FILE]... Any help on it would be appreciated

@Mitch Should this be closed as off-topic (bug-reporting)?

6:54 AM
@Pandya of couse

@Pandya Stop please.
@Pandya That is probably the third time you asked already. It will not be closed. If it were to be closed, it would be closed already.
@Pandya Third, it is not a bug report. That is just the most logical solution: It was a bug.
@Pandya Fourth, I want to keep my +500 rep.

I don't think you lose bounties on deletion

Still, it's not a bug report.
The situation itself is a bug,

Yeah.
(deleted that U&L post since I don't really want to see that intexted)

If we were to follow this for EVERY SINGLE bug post, we'd lose about 2/3 of the questions here.

7:06 AM
XD

no, really.
There are too many bug reports here. Some are actual bug reports, but most are bugs that users want workarounds for.
Oh god.
@JourneymanGeek GET OVER HERE!
Fanks.

I'm gonna run out of spam flags :(

You're a MOD.
How do mods run out of flags?

I'm a superuser and software recs mod
I'm a normal user elsewhere

Ah well. At least we're not hit yet.

Besides, just cause you're awesome at superuser does not make you worthy of god-like powers on AU

But Superuser is THE DEFINITIVE community here!
It is supposed to be impossible to get into the SU mod club.
No wait. That's stackoverflow.
Also, we need SSL.
I should work at SE just so I can lord my power over all of you :D

@Whaaaaaat: I lost an AU election (to some great folk)
I basically completely crushed the next two candidates on SU ;p

I might run. I'l loose, but I think I'll try.
