@pacificfils please, don't add "hello", "bye", etc. If anything trim it down to the most essential askubuntu.com/posts/450857/revisions

Hello people!!
After lot of time out, this has been growing:

Lot of new things, new version, meta of meta, very excited to be around again :)

meta of meta???
meta of meta?????

12:16 AM
yep, the meta of the meta, that is also meta.
Very meta.

wow

much sites
such quality
very improve
may i have some advice please?
becuase i've searched whole of ask ubuntu
and neither can i find a good answer
and my question got flagged by fossfreedom as bug report
(yeah, i read his message)
may i?

@MayukhNair have you tried reporting a bug?

1. it's not a bug, since it happened with me in each edition
whether i run liveusb or installed

12:26 AM
How do I select the drive to install on to on the "Installation Type" page of the Ubuntu installer? You can highlight one in the tree that it shows, but there's no indication that it will actually install to one or the other.

so if you're interested, you can give me a bit of your wisdom
Classic problem :)
1. Select your hard drive from the combo box down in the bottom of the Ubiquity installer
you're using the something else option, right?

Yup; I selected the drive in the boot loader box, but how do I chose where everything else goes?

the partition manager should show all drives and partitions.
double click the partition to open the partitioningg menu
Done?

@MayukhNair have you tested the integrity of the drive?

@Braiam Hi

12:30 AM
@Braiam memtest86 shows no problem

@MayukhNair memtest doesn't test the hard drives...
3

@WasabiFan when the partitioning menu opens, change do no use this partition to ext4filejournaling system
@Braiam Will do system testing and get back to you
@Braiam you're seeing this, right? askubuntu.com/questions/447986/…

@MayukhNair I see; so if I select 'do not use', the drive won't be affected?

@MayukhNair that would be a hardware issue unrelated to ubuntu
try something else

To all the community and specially Ubuntu Developers, thanks for the best distro ever, Trusty. <3

12:33 AM
@WasabiFan Not at all. I'd recommend you format that partition.

@Braiam What should i try then?
@WasabiFan I mean, don't format all your partitions
Just the one you're installing ubuntu on

@MayukhNair Just to be clear, 'don't use' means that it will not be modified? I have two drives, one with Windows and another empty one. I don't want to modify anything about my current setup (including the boot record), just to add a separate bootloader and Ubuntu installation on a separate drive.

"Don't use this partition" means exactly that. It does nothing.
On the windows one, set to do not use this partition
and uncheck the format this partition before you proceed
on the ubuntu one, change to ext4 file journaling system
unless you already have some iportant data on it, select format this partition for it
and bootloader?
install it on the partition with windows in it
which is most probably dev/sda1
(check with partition editor before doing that)
i dunno if separate bootloaders can play nice
i'd recommend not

Q: Lets get rid of keyboard and mouse tags

BraiamReally, most of this questions are about either: xorg xserver mir unity other DM Alone this tag doesn't tell what the question is about, and there are already tags that fit within that specific category.

Q: Why was my "obsolete" flag declined?

guntbertAfter having edited the question and created an appropriate answer I flagged the comment "Don't give the solution in your own question" as "obsolete" - the answer part had been removed from the question. This flag was declined, the comment is still there - was that a mistake or purposeful?

@Braiam we all know where you are going with it ;)

Q: Lets get rid of the localhost tag

BraiamThe localhost has been on the burner for some time now. Users that know the term, will know that it is the name of the system itself, a network loopback. In the last 30 days, nobody answered any of those questions and nobody seems to continuously use the tag. It should just get removed as it get ...

1:52 AM
can i sync lights on usb and built in keyboard

2:18 AM
@Seth @Braiam

are any of our mods around?

2:37 AM
Here now
Sup?

@ThomasW. ^

@Braiam done. And please don't take it that far again (I know it was several days ago)

@Seth check the flags queue, we've got rollback wars going on that need squishing

On mobile, but I'll try.

i'll give you links if you want

2:42 AM
@Seth but, but... you didn't fixed the tags :(

@Seth askubuntu.com/questions/449486/… and askubuntu.com/questions/99695/… are both in the same set of issues
(rollback war)
one of them was just locked by you
the war seems to be between radu and braiam

@Braiam again, I'm on mobile I'll look into them more deeply later.

@ThomasW. did you took today's coffee dosage?

@Braiam just barely
that's why i'm sane

meh, ok

2:45 AM
Btw, nice to see you Thomas :)

meh
i'm not here long
once in an age, maybe
got too much crap at work >.>

lends his decraptifier to @ThomasW.

Well hopefully it will get better

@Braiam centos is evil
that's the problem

@ThomasW. heh, I know somebody that will bite you for that statement :P
lucky you he doesn't lurk outside the UL rooms

2:47 AM
@Braiam the sysadmin at work got annoyed at me for suggesting Debian or Ubuntu for this project at work

CentOS is nice if you don't care about features

Did I get all the important things?

@Seth do you have your wallet?
cellphone?
pants?
if everything is yes, yeah, you can go outside to play :P

Heh.

@Seth afaict yes

2:53 AM
It's raining here. No going outside until tomorrow. But that's work, not play.
@Thomas cool. I'll come back and handle the rest latter when I have time.

make sure to check back and initiate military sniping of the offending users though

o/

Also, can you guys clear out the LQP queue please? That'd help out a lot.
@Thomas yeah, I won't forget to take care of it.
Hey lazypower.

3:45 AM
Whoah... 63 people downloaded our Ubuntu Touch app...
I had better start to work on improving that a bit.

4:14 AM
congrats nathan

Thanks!

Flags. Flags everywhere :-/
@NathanOsman Hey that's cool!
Now you need to write a book on Ubuntu Touch programming with QML :P

I'm no expert on this yet.
But writing a book does sound like a cool idea.

I think it'd be the first one on the market..

4:31 AM
is that possible to bootup Ubuntu after it's /boot partition got deleted?

I'd also need to actually get the emulator working.

@AvinashRaj you'd need to re-create the boot partition and install grub, or use an external boot medium.

What do you think about it?

how to recreate /boot partition?
@lazyPower

4:44 AM
@AvinashRaj kind of ambiguous of a question considering i dont know if the partition itself is completly gone, or what. And we don't normally do support in AU chat.
sorry, just trying to stick to the rules

kernel to bootup Ubuntu should resides inside the /boot partition. If it got deleted then how?

https://askubuntu.com/questions/450097/problem-with-optirun-bumblebee
What do you think about it?
I could not help him, But you?

@AvinashRaj join #ubuntu on irc.freenode.net and I'll try to help guide you through mounting a chroot to recover your /boot
@xiaodongjie - dont ask for support in here. This is not a proper support channel. Use irc.freenode.net #ubuntu for support related questions, or patiently wait for your question to be answered. Thanks

@lazyPower Thanks.
@lazyPower But It's not my question. It's other's.
@lazyPower I want to just help him. It's bad?

No, its not bad to ask for assistance with a question - but repeat posting is seen as spam, and typically results in responses like the one sent above ^

4:54 AM
@lazyPower Hm, never known that rule. You can do support here if you want. Or you can create a new room if you feel bad about it. (Not saying you can't use irc however)

@lazyPower First you don't talk me as this. Now OK. I understood.

@Seth unless things changed in the 382 days since i've been back.
that was a general rule we enforced to keep the signal to noise ratio down
if i'm being a troll - feel free to ignore me :P

@lazyPower Well they might have. We do support here all the time. If it is going to be a big task it is a better idea to move it to your own room, but unless you start causing problems helping people here is fine :)
@lazyPower nah you're fine :)

Oh, I have just a question.
Can you help me?

@xiaodongjie Just ask it, if someone can help they will ;)

4:56 AM
1 hour ago, I committed a patch related to deja-dup.
via using command "bzr commit"
What happened? I really don't know about it.

@lazyPower thanks for your help. I will try to get into that.

@xiaodongjie bzr commit adds it to your local repository history. You can view that history with bzr log | less

@lazyPower 谢谢!

@AvinashRaj Apparently I can ehlp you here, no need to go to a third party network. DO you have a LiveUSB handy>

@lazyPower It patch is uploaded to lp server?

4:59 AM
not until you bzr push to a branch that you control.

i just want hints.I will pickup so quickly :-)
@lazyPower

@lazyPower How to use "bzr push"? please help me exactly.
@AvinashRaj Please wait a minute.

@AvinashRaj You need to mount with a LiveUSB. if you still have the EXT3 partition around, you chroot into your system, and reinstall grub. There's posts on AU about reinstalling grub and recovering a broken bootable system.
@xiaodongjie bzr push lp:~userid/project-name/branch-name
and here's the documentation on the rest: http://doc.bazaar.canonical.com/beta/en/tutorials/using_bazaar_with_launchpad.html

@lazyPower Oh, thanks. Your help is wonderful.

my help tastes like raisins.

5:02 AM
is that reinstalling the grub only will solves the problem of whole separate /boot partition got deleted?

@AvinashRaj if the parition is no longer around you will need to add the partition to your disk again. If its there but "unallocated" you can simply reformat it, add the boot flag, and re: my instructions above.
@AvinashRaj if for some reason you cannot re-create that parition, you will need to invest some time in learning how to boot a system from grub on USB. And thats beyond my skill set at 1 am.

at "bzr push lp:~userid/project-name/branch-name", branch-name is what? ex: bzr lp:~xiaodongjie/deja-dup/????

an arbitrary name for your branch, typically descriptive of what the branches topic is. like fix_12345 where 12345 is the bug id.

@lazyPower Thank you very much.

no problem
*thank ;) @ThomasW - i thought we were signposting help topics elsewhere

@Takkat i installed vbox guest additions but still my guest os resolution didn't changed.

@AvinashRaj hi - this usually indicates an unsuccessful installation of the guest additions.
Did you reboot the guest?

yep
oh i accidentally pressed scaled mode.How do i get out of that?

Q: Resizable screen mode for VirtualBox behaves strange with Ubuntu as guest

FUZxxlI have Ubuntu both as guest and as host. I use VirtualBox 4, just downloaded from the official repository. After installing the guest extensions, I got this strange problem: When I activate the resizable screen mode with Host + C, the GNOME desktop won't resize with the screen. Only the wallpape...

got it.

great \o/ !

6:49 AM
may i reinstall again the guest additions

@AvinashRaj you can reinstall as often as you want... it only takes time.
just run the installer from the CD.iso again.

you mean delete and reinstall again

it will auto-remove previous guest additions on reinstalling them.

i will reinstall guest additions also :-)
And also how do i get into tty on Ubuntu running in vbox?

it's HOST + F1...F7 key

6:59 AM
HOST??
you mean window key.

@AvinashRaj yeah whatever you defined it to be (I made it right shift for convenience)
It says at the bottom right of the VBox manager window.

window key aka super key.
it says right ctrl

then it's right cltr.
press it to see the icon change,

right ctrl+F4 takes me to the tty of host os.

^^ in preferences... we can define the Host Key

7:09 AM
i have to assign which key for getting into guest tty

This key or whatever you defined + F1 key
Right Shift made fewest confusion with host, that's why I chose that years ago... ;)

i have to assign rgtctrl+F1 in which field

not +F1 .,,, this is what you press in addition to the HOST key when in guest Ubuntu
so HOST-key replaces Ctrl+Alt basically

you mean Host key +F1

yepp

7:14 AM
my host key is rghtctrl

then rightctrl + F1 when you are in the guest
HOST + F7 gets you back to GUI

@Takkat no, rightctrl+F4 takes me to the host tty
f1,f2,f3 won't work.

@AvinashRaj did you define to do that on your host? It does not on my systems here. Need ALT key in addition.
You may need another HOST key for VBox then.^^

you mean i have to press rightctrl+alt+f4
how i define to do that on my host?

@AvinashRaj that's what leads me to TTY on my host...
but not when I press R-CTL+F4
this combination does nothing here.

7:27 AM
for you?
but it takes me to the host tty.
and also f4 only works for me.

for me, yeah... define R-SHIFT as host-key then

f1,f2,f3 fails.

??? why?

you mean
define host as right shifht
then
right shift+alt+f4

in Virtual Box Prefences as shown above say that you want RIGHT SHIFT as host key.
You need to shutdown all VMs to have access to that setting.
@AvinashRaj Nobody said you need an ALT key to get to TTY in a VM.

@AvinashRaj did you define to do that on your host? It does not on my systems here. Need ALT key in addition.

We were talking of your Host going to TTY, didn't we?

confused.

confused too :)

how did you get into guest tty?

I pressed Right Shift + F1
but I defined Right Shift as my host key.
You will have another key for that.

7:35 AM
hahaaa this discussion again.

ok i will try after setting my host key as right shift.

@hbdgaf \o/ I knew we had that before ;)

how goes it @Takkat

any link posted in chat will be edited.

7:37 AM
@AvinashRaj feel free to edit as long as you're not defacing ;)
that's what the privilege of editing is for...

@hbdgaf very well - but will be AFK for a while now - breakfast with family ;)

editing the tags seems to be difficult.

I don't get in to tagging discussions. It keeps my blood pressure down.

8:23 AM
@Takkat I solved that long ago:ditch your family and have breakfast in bed with notebook on lap

@Rinzwind where is lightdm.conf file located in 12.04?

@Rinzwind family is important if you have one. just saying...

In 13.10 and 14.04 , it is located inside /etc/init directory.

@AvinashRaj sudo updatedb && locate lightdm.conf

2 mins ago, by Avinash Raj
@Rinzwind where is lightdm.conf file located in 12.04?
@hbdgaf ^^

8:35 AM
yeah. i was telling you how to find it...
is it named something else or something?

thanks. But i'm runing 14.04.

ooohh.... nm
i thought you were asking because you couldn't find it on your install.

no
people were just asking "there is no lightdm.conf file inside /etc/lightdm/ directory"

@Rinzwind you can't get a notebook to make you coffee ;)

@Takkat yes you can! power from usb
you can even fondue from a computer: foodrepublic.com/2012/06/21/…

8:39 AM
@Rinzwind kk - some notebooks appear to have an over-heating issue so could use it for your espresso cooker

Q: Turn on Num Lock at start up

R SharmaI am not able to activate Num Lock on Ubuntu 14.04. I installed Leafpad and gksu. Thereafter I ran the command: gksudo leafpad /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf An empty file opened, and I wrote: greeter-setup-script=/usr/bin/numlockx on On reboot the system refused to work, and I reinstalled Ubunt...

USB Desktop Coffeemaker
This one is decidedly less complicated. As far as calorie savers go, however, you can bank on saving at least 8 by not walking to the kitchen and back. Plus if you're only in the market for one cup, you won't have to make a whole pot. Yup, the reasons to have one of these just keep piling up. Have they made a USB milk frother yet? They have not. $31.39 from firebox.com
@Takkat ^^ :)

@Rinzwind that's only for coffee warmers. there seems to be a gap for usb controlled coffeepots. NEW ARDUINO PROJECT. definitely a gap that needs to be closed...
^^ reminds me of a dilbert comic...

ooooooooh nice cupsize
pun intended :=)

sudo goto 'bakkerij' && sudo get 'broodjes'

8:42 AM
now fill that up with coca cola and we got a deal

Now whenever my computer 'freezes' I should get it to make me an icecream

@Takkat The coffeepot is definitely easier and more practical. On freeze behavior would more logically be that scene from Elysium where the probation officer automaton says "Elevated levels of aggression detected... Would you like a pill?" cabinet flips open

How do I make this partition smaller?

which partition?
@sammyg

8:47 AM
I can't right click to resize.
ext4

You can't resize if it's mounted. See askubuntu.com/questions/115310/…

@sammyg Backup your data first...

always even moreso when shrinking... ^^

And I can't unmount it since it's the system partition?

@Takkat whimp! loser! man up and take a risc in life :=)

8:50 AM
@sammyg you have to boot live...

Backup is for cowards

@sammyg easiest method: use a gParted live dvd

I don't need backup. I'm not afraid of data loss.

burn to dvd; boot from it. That makes sure any disc is unmounted

I installed Ubuntu yesterday.
But now I want Windows on it too.

8:51 AM
easiest one

@sammyg not gonna happen

@sammyg oh noes... you're going to have to reinstall grub

@sammyg not going to happen....

easiest one

Q: How to resize partitions?

JohannesPreviously, I have installed Windows 7 on my 320 GB laptop with three partitions 173, 84 and 63 GB each. The 63 GB partition was where the Windows was installed. The rest were for file containers. Now I changed my OS to Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. I installed Ubuntu by replacing the entire Windows 7 on th...

8:52 AM
windows needs to be installed 1st

What do you mean not going to happen?
According to the post above you can fix GRUB later on.

@sammyg if you do not install windows 1st it wont let you w/o removing ubuntu
windows needs to be 1st on the partitioon

no... no it doesn't. it's more about boot-loader issues than disk order.

@Rinzwind So what they say in that post is not true?

@sammyg it's SO much easier if you're not afraid of data loss to install windows first. just do it. it's not worth it.

8:54 AM
how did i install keypass in ubuntu?

@sammyg hmmm that 1 post in there might work. but re-installing is going to be quicker.
not woth the time

^^ that

ok

Oli; s answer is missing a key point: you need to create space at the beginning

Can you at least tell me what's involved in doing this the way they explain in that post?

8:55 AM
schadenfreude@oubliette:~$ apt-cache search keepass
keepass2 - Password manager
keepass2-doc - Password manager - Documentation
keepassx - Cross Platform Password Manager
kpcli - command line interface to KeePassX password manager databases
libfile-keepass-perl - interface to KeePass V1 and V2 database files

hmm i wonder...

so what will happen is that -all- software in the partition is going to get moved That takes a lot of time

How do you unmount the ext4 partition to resize it?
Do you run LiveDVD?

forgotted

And use Gparted?

@sammyg the post by harisibrahimkv seems to be correct. I stopped reading after Oli's reply
@sammyg no need. burn gparted to a cd/dvd. boot of it. and you will see all your disc unmounted already.
and it will let you shrink and resize without loss of data (assuming it all goes well and you did not make a mistake ;)
important part: the free space for the windows install needs to be at the BEGINNING of the disc.

8:58 AM
if you make a mistake...

ok
That sounds like doable.
Maybe more time consuming though...
