Hello, Everone
I have a question
Maybe two questions...
I posted this
http://askubuntu.com/questions/554319/using-sudo-apt-get-clean-autoremove-kill-my-laptop
and I see a -3 and a -6...
was I penalized?
did I lose 9 point out of the blue?
was it my question? if anything, it might have been foolish and naive, but not offensive

If you hover over the downvote button:
> This question does not show any research effort, is unclear or not useful
It is important to remember that this is not a forum, open ended and/or discussion based question do not work here.

it is not a forum?

We can't answer your question without knowing a lot of background information you don't provide and it seems as if it wouldn't matter anyway since you already reinstalled.

what is this, then?

@CarlosC No we are a Q/A site. That might sound like a silly distinction but we find it necessary when people come here expecting us everything to work exactly like a forum.

12:16 AM
good to know

Downvotes can be a little harsh sometimes, but they are an important factor in quality control.

thanks for your time

Think of this like a giant knowledge base/faq/wiki all rolled into one.
@CarlosC I dunno if you're already looked at these, but you might want to take a look through the tour and help center.
Err, my magic links didn't work.

will do

@CarlosC Are you on an unusable system right now? i.e. one that is experiencing these issues? If you have already reinstalled there is nothing we can do to help you.

12:22 AM
if I were on an unusable system, I would not be able to contact the team... no offense there.

all I wanted to do was get some info on a command that should be safe but is not for me.

like if opening Orca scrambeled my screen.... the solution for you people was ¨don´t use it, shut up¨
- 9 points for asking

well, there is always a friends computer

@CarlosC well to compare if you asked "why does opening orca scramble my screen" we wouldn't be able to tell you without diagnostic data.
and once you wipe the problem off your machine we can't help, all the data is gone.

all I wanted was information... from the giant knowledge base/faq/wiki

well as I stated earlier "all I wanted was information" type "questions" don't work well on an objective, definitive Q/A site :)
This is all probably hard to understand, but read some of the links I suggested and stick around and you will figure it out. Feel free to ask here if you have any questions, either about Ubuntu or the site itself.
Can't guarantee answers but you will usually get them.

1:07 AM
whew... that week is finally over. \o/

@hbdgaf Midterms?

retail.

I vfeel sorry for you
Friend of mine got punched in the face by a wallywotrld customer

I suppose I look a little... rough around the edges. They tend to back down with me. Then the bystanders tend to come back the next day, pull me aside, and whisper in hushed tones - "That was AWESOME"
@Virusboy you're double striking a lot, do I need to say go home you're drunk? or you just have a new keyboard?

1:12 AM
laggy for some odd reason

I didn't mean double posting, I mean vfeel and wallywotrld. The keys are adjacent keys, so fatfingering probably.
New topic: I wonder how accurate a visual range-finder one could make with 2 cheap-ish USB cameras and a raspi. Grab an image from both cameras sitting side-by-side simultaneously, find obvious edges with opencv, then build a triangle based on the offset between the cameras and difference in placement of the image... would need some calibration for sure though.

ugh
is having trouble with apt on a fresh ubuntu install

@JourneymanGeek whaaaa? did you add any ppas or something mysterious is just going on?

Apparently they still haven't fixed issues with one repo and ipv6 yet
Nope
Fresh install of 12.04, tried to disable ipv6 in apt but that dosen't work

Eh. Can you use a 6to4 gateway to get there or anything?

1:19 AM
With 14.04 I can just tell apt not to use ipv6

I thought 12.04 was EoL

Nope, LTS

12.04 server is not EoL

Oli
Neither is desktop

Its unrelated to my issue but I'm trying to install something that fails on the latest LTS
Dev says their install script is outdated so I figured I'd use a older version

1:21 AM
@Oli Oh. I assumed it was going to be soon, but I forgot about the extending how long LTS gets support a while ago.

Oli
12.04 will outlive us all (because 2017 still sounds impossibly far into the future)

12.04 is still greater than XP... just sayin'.

And its sitting on waiting on headers now
ugh

@Oli Your edit made my response look stupid.

Q: Convince apt-get *not* to use IPv6 method

ShadurThe ISP I work at is setting up an internal IPv6 network in preparation for eventually connecting to the IPv6 internet. As a result, several of the servers in this network now try to connect to security.debian.org via its IPv6 address by default when running apt-get update, and that results in ha...

Same problem as this
Well, not any more

@hbdgaf Any Linux Distro is better than XP

@Virusboy Try getting multimedia support to work on FC2...

What is FC2?

Fedora Core 2.

I thought so, wait why not do Red Hat

1:27 AM
0_0
That OS belongs in a museium ;p

I know, but he said ANY

Ok, I think I beat it into working
and whoot used sed.

@Virusboy >.< Fedora core is just Redhat Beta
@JourneymanGeek \o/

@hbdgaf: they don't make FC any more

Really?

1:28 AM
Hence why I asked what I did

Its just fedora
and various respins
They're trisecting the distro soon too

Ouch. I'm not in the loop on Fedora politics any more. I just saw fedoraproject.org/en/get-fedora with an active release date and thought - well I suppose.

Its not really politics

So what issue is causing the divergence?

They want a specific server build

1:32 AM
that retarded

and a spin for cloud guests
@Virusboy: how so?

they are making a specific server OS? That doesnt sound very smart

@Virusboy: Ubuntu does it

Well, Ubuntu has a server edition, a UEC image, and myriad desktop options for initial install. Is it a bigger difference on their side of the fence? I mean, how much code is really changing that isn't package selection and utilities?

for which server

1:33 AM
and essentially Fedora server is RHEL Server/Centos Server beta
@Virusboy: Ubuntu has at least 3-4 official varients

Yeah, I also found CentOS to lag behind on many things in RHEL - a lot. I haven't used it in years though.

So they finally got over the rpm -i remove-branding.rpm hump? reading

2:29 AM
@Mateo - you might like this one. Seems interesting.
particularly interesting is that it's a $100 board that doesn't make you rebuild everything for ARM - specifically things that probably won't work right if you get them building.

blah logic.

@Seth you don't find my logic sound, or it is disheartening? or something else altogether?

@hbdgaf oh, nothing relating to you. I'm at a logical impasse in the program I'm writing, just letting a bit of it out.

2:44 AM
how so? @logical_impasse

impasse is probably a bit over the top. I just need to decide which way I plan to implement something without getting over the top and without redundancy. I was trying to fit two very similar things into one function but it wasn't working out very well. I'll probably end up duplicating a few lines.
Complex logic is not worth saving a few lines of redundancy.

Agreed. Sometimes, that's a reason to make a class and override a function or two in one case or the other. Or even separate a piece in to another function. Let me write an example of the latter. I think it's probably where you are.

Tejal SinghWhen i downloaded the iso file of ubuntu 14.04 and tried installing it through USB drive with the help of unetbootin . after the installation of files in usb drive...mcafee detected several files as infected and quarantined them...

I think my comment was appropriate

no

Because he is unclear what a good AV is

I'll just not get in to that one.

Lookin at this ebay.com/itm/…?

oooo pretty. but 83 for 120GB?

60 at Amazon, getting better

@hbdgaf oh, nice. I really liked my via c7 board when it was working it was a 1ghz 32bit

newegg and tigerdirect should have good deals on SSD too

@Virusboy newegg especially apparently...
also looking at the OCZ vertex 460, seems they have better uptime endurance

When I think of a WordPress/Drupal/Joomla dev, I think on this:

so roll your own!
/irony

Because rolled garbage is still garbage
its not the dev, its the dev content

Who do you guess will fix this?

no one will.
They'll continue making work arounds till its so broke it gets orphaned like a red headed step child.

yeah, like your avatar xD

@jacob 8000!
@virusboy how did you lose 100 rep on a single question?
dw found the bounty!

2:52 PM
Can I ask hardware compatibility questions on askubuntu?

@ConfusedStack like "will this laptop work if I buy it" or what kind of question

I'm trying to understand what actual hardware in stylus based x86 tablets is still broken. Ex. "Venue_8_Pro wifi driver is still broken. This tablet uses driver ______ to run the wifi board ______. VivoTab_Note_8 stylus driver is non-existant, for board ____ Model ____."
I guess, if that makes sense.
There are LOTS of forums posts all over the web, but there is no "current" state I can find about the topic itself. And some of the forum threads run 100s of pages and don't even have a current summary.
and as far as I can tell almost none of them actually show what hard ware and drivers are specifically the issues anyway.
@Mateo ^

yeah, that probably isn't a good fit for here then
maybe a ubuntu-wiki testing list would be good?

ok. And if it was a "will this laptop work if I buy it" ?

nope
ah, here is an example: wiki.ubuntu.com/Mir/GPUTesting
so that would be good for that type of thing. Test, list hardware - put in list

4:00 PM
@Tim I'm a but confused. I haven't lost more than 20 rep on a single question

Tim
4:42 PM
@virusboy i saw you had 1 rep on android, and was confused how that happened! I see the bounty now!

Q: Grub2 lost in new Linux distro install

lhahnSo, I really need some help. Recently I was using a dual boot machine on the same hard drive. I had Windows 8.1 and Ubuntu GNOME 14.04. When I installed Ubuntu on top of my Windows install, I didn't have to install the Grub bootloader. I just created my partitions /, /home and /swap and install...

@Virusboy Was it made later than 8 years before the Ubuntu release? (ie a 14.10 machine should be made in 2008 or later). If so, it is almost guaranteed to run Ubuntu. You may need to make some tweaks for drivers and such, though.

babpacihI was pinging google last night and one of them came back as DUP(!). hey everyone, got my scope in the store:
Now on the #Ubuntu Touch Store, The RSS Feeds scope. http://t.co/dff4gByV6O
there we go ;)

9:49 PM
@Mateo - nice. still adding features? or you're done?

still going, going to put more custom slots in, since I can reuse that bit of code and just make more settings slots. then I'm trying to do something interesting with the first page
If I can get the link of the first search result, I'm going to pipe that into second department, so you can display the rss feeds that you can find, or something like that

interesting. i'm thinking about getting a minnowboard, so i can not have to use arm packages for some things.
i still have code to get working on the lappie before it gets to that point though. i want it to get working before i get hardware to run it as an all day grinder.

@hbdgaf that one looked nice, wonder if it loads os's like the arm boards, or if you can just usb/usbcd load them

It looks like it loads angstrom from the micro-sd
@Mateo If I get one, I'll be sure to let you know.

10:05 PM
I think the download is right on the page he pointed to...
I'll try it and do a "do exactly this" thing
yo @Lucio
thanks for the twiting on twitter

I was more directing it towards the "make espeak better" bit. I don't install naked bits of code from questionable sources because someone criticizes an existing package. Seems like a sales call as a question if that's what it requires.
o/ @Lucio

@hbdgaf ah, yeah, I ignored that part
in fact, just edited it out ;)

Hello folks!
@Mateo welcome to Twitter Mateo! :D

hi @NathanOsman!

How's it going?

rainy day here
so perfect :)

It snowed here last night

10:24 PM
oh, that's nice

yo @NathanOsman how are things

I was outside until about 8:30pm and didn't look outside until about midnight.
And suddenly... snow!
@Mateo Good.
Been a crazy busy week.

I took a nap, and BAM. Emeril put snow in my yard ;)

lol

cool, looks like I missed the ubuntu pioneer list by barely a day

10:27 PM
:(

sweet, I don't like shortners

@Lucio: I have a few minutes to help with 2buntu.

oh thanks

I may disappear for a minute or two at a time, but I'll hang around here.

10:30 PM
yeah, I have time too
I saw Travis and test do pass

but not in my machine :(

@Lucio Yeah, but the tests aren't terribly comprehensive.

hehe, I guess so

There's an open bug to have those fixed/upgraded.
Are you installing locally on your machine or on a server?
Also, are you planning to set it up to run it or contribute code?

10:34 PM
the other day I just wanted to set it up
now I want to contribute

Okay, 'cuz we have a really simple method for just setting it up.
We've converted the installations steps to a Docker container.

I would like a repo where I do clone change the settings.py and everything is working with Python 3.4
ouch, docker

But if you're contributing code, for now at least, you'll need to set it up locally.

I guess the time has come
yep

So which steps are you following? The ones on the wiki?

10:36 PM
yep

Let me really quickly fire up a VM and run through the steps as you've done them.
Just to confirm, you've got Python 3.4, right?

yes

Also, what version of Ubuntu are you running?
(I'll try to match versions.)

14.04

jrg
Ah, the joys of debugging.

10:37 PM
Okay. Python 3 on Ubuntu 14.04.
@jrg Merry Christmas to you too :P

@jrg none?

jrg
@NathanOsman lol
Also, my room is waaaaayyyy warmer now. Bluray ripping + Handbrake = Lots of CPU cycles = Warmth in this corner.

I should try overclocking my CPU and GPU.
That could generate some serious heat.

jrg
Eh, not entirely worth it.
also not really a good heat source.

jrg
10:38 PM
gotta be doing something with it.

Oh, I intended to do something with it.

jrg
10 cores going at it though - that generates some heat.

I need an excuse to do some gaming :P

jrg
2 i5s and a quad i7. :P
Interstellar Marines is a good one.

I've got one of those "fancy" AMD APUs.

jrg
10:39 PM
Yeah, it'll run on that.

Well, and I also have a dedicated GPU.
I spent $250 on a Radeon R9 270X
@Lucio: I've got the VM up, running through the instructions now.

ok

jrg
@NathanOsman those help. :P

Argh. I forgot and installed Python 2.x by mistake. Have to start again :P

xD
venv?

10:46 PM
Is that what you're using?
I want to try to do everything the way you did it.

yes

That way, I'm more likely to see the same error.
Okay.

@NathanOsman ok, buy a dog

:P
I'm going to have some hot-dogs for lunch soon.
Does that count?

10:47 PM
mm.. kinda :P

haha

I'm going to quickly grab lunch if that's okay.
I'm about halfway through.

go ahead

11:06 PM
Is this the error you get?
ImportError: Could not import settings 'twobuntu.settings' (Is it on sys.path? Is there an import error in the settings file?): No module named 'twobuntu.local_settings'

no really
I then renamed twobuntu.local_settings.py to twobuntu.settings.py
and worked

It's working now?

nop
let me screenshoot the actual message

Okay.

11:11 PM
Hmm... interesting...

I have no clue

I'll look into it.
Seems to work... I'll give you the list of commands I ran.
dpaste.de/oQgY <-- the commands
I'll be having lunch for the next few minutes.

thank you nat
will check it out!

jrg
11:43 PM
@Lucio did you migrate the database?

yep
I'm watching some issue with the versioning..
I guess you did it wrong @NathanOsman
watching at your command log there is this:
git clone github.com/2buntu/2buntu-Django-Blog.git
cd 2buntu-Django-Blog
virtualenv venv
source venv/bin/activate
if then you do python -V you may get 2.7

Yeah, the instructions on the wiki assume Python 2.x.

O_O

When I did it just now on the VM, I used pip3 to install virtualenv.

but you did not cd to it

11:48 PM
I honestly don't know how to properly get virtualenv from Python 2.x to create a virtualenv for Python 3.
@Lucio You don't need to cd to the virtualenv. Just run 'source venv/bin/activate'.
That will activate it.

yep
but then enter python -V and see what happens
What I did was:
virtualenv --python=python3 --system-site-packages 2buntu-Django-Blog/
over the cloned folder

Why is it that people attack what they perceive as weaker players in online games, then get all butt-hurt and go clanwar on players that pwn them. Finally the clan realizes they're just butt-hurt and kicks them out and asks you to join. Then you refuse :)

I'm... not... sure I followed all of that.

me neither

11:53 PM
1) You look weak someone attacks you.
2) You hit them back, harder. Like a lot harder.
3) They get upset because they lost.
4) They call in buddies.
5) Their buddies eventually realize, they hit you first and you were retaliating in a leave me alone fashion.
6) Eventually someone says "Nevermind that guy. We didn't mean it. Come with us. You're good people."
7) You say "Sorry nope. If I wasn't good enough then, and you hit me, then I'm not good enough now. Just get ready... because I promise I can hit back harder ;)"

So, clarity :)

@NathanOsman fresh install while first ./manage.py migrate
