@Mateo So.. the CW feature was put in place to enable low rep users help edit a community collaborative wiki, but it didn't end up getting used like that, just making users cry because they stopped getting rep for making their answers better.
So they pulled it.
@Mateo That's interesting.. I've never been much of a tablet person myself, but it looks good.
Or is that just a N10 with UT on it?

@Seth the picture is
they are talking about something else though

oh, lol.
My bad ;P

yeah, I'm not too +at all+ convinced about the authenticity of it

3:15 AM
@badp your message made me giggle a little
very strange, but I could not install Lubuntu 14.04, Ubuntu 14.04 nor 14.10
very bad day
the best that I could make was use a LiveUSB with extraspace to store there the system. It sucks but does the job

@Oli lol

Q: Network connectivity trouble to non-routing multi-homed hosts?

Dave M.I have two networks: A and B (172.16.2.0/24 and 172.17.2.0/24). A is Ethernet, B is WiFi. An OpenWRT router connects A and B, and most traffic gets passed OK. Default route on router leads to a cable modem on the Ethernet, and traffic to the Internet works fine. I have two multi-homed Linux m...

Q: How to reterive the delete folder or file using gui software

Ubuntu-BeginnerI want to know how to recover the deleted folders or files using Ubuntu GUI software

6:27 AM
@Mateo - interesting. I'll keep that bit in the back of my brain for if/when I get something marginally working. Not perfect, but at least "Okay. I've crossed all the little hurdles. Now it's just playing with the math." Anything before that is just a little embarrassing.

7:11 AM
anyone read this book: "The Linux Command Line"

Someone clearly must have ;)

vary funny.... i almost forgot to laugh..
@JourneymanGeek so you have'nt read?

Nope
I tend to learn a little more informally personally.

by writing a book and reading it yourslef..? LOL.. :P
lets stop this mocking..

Naw, looking up stuff as I need to solve issues.
More seriously, though its probably more useful to ask exactly what you want to ask. Are you asking for opinions on the book, or you want to talk about stuff in the book?

7:26 AM
i was thinking someone here read that book. i just want to know if it is worth my time..

it looks promising though..
http://linuxcommand.org/tlcl.php
author had given a free pdf

Quick skim looks good
I'll probably stash this for reference ;)

actually I planned to build an LFS system.. so i thought some basics would be good

ahh
I'm working my way through the linux foundation course on edx
kinda similar. I'd like to work on my fundamentals, so I skip anything I already know XD

7:32 AM
have learned unix and shell in college.. but i think it is not enough...

I'm entirely self thought. I actually ended up helping my lecturers with putty and such >_>

me a dropout.. :)

Oh, I went back to school and kicked its ass ;)

is anyone else having this problem with nautilus?
After I upgraded from 13.10 to 14.04, the "Close All Windows" in the File menu and Ctrl+Q are not closing all windows. Instead they are only closing the active window. As if I had pressed Ctrl+W. However, running "nautlius -q" in a terminal, closes all Nautilus windows. The built-in Font Viewer crashes the entire desktop when I try to install fonts.
It's easier to just copy them to ~/.local/share/fonts myself.

font manager is better
maybe they will replace viewer someday
you can even organize your fonts in collections, and enable/diable/export them as groups

6:43 PM
@Lucio No problem!

@Mateo That looks a lot better.

should just be font-manager for the name of the package

7:41 PM
I've got a curious problem: The greeter screen correctly accepts my login&password, but the session throws me back out to the greeter screen immediately. I know the pw is correct because if I try something else, it gives the typical "incorrect pw" message. Without access to my desktop, how can I troubleshoot this??

@TorbenGundtofte-Bruun check the errors file in your home

This is on 14.10 (upgrade of 14.04.

this one: .xsession-errors

@Rinzwind thank you, can you please be more specific
thanks :-)

no I can't :=)
and it can also be a corrupted .Xauthority file (but I believe you then also get a popup about it; has been a couple of years ago I saw that one)

7:43 PM
you can and you were faster than me

@TorbenGundtofte-Bruun ofcourse :=D

I'm on a guest session right now... how can I "sudo" as my admin user?
(sometimes I still feel like a total noob :-) but I'm comparing against 25 years of Windows...)
wait, I can still use tty2!

and tty1 and 3 and 4 probably too
and 5

yeah yeah :)

and ... do a
tail -f .xsession-errors
and then log in on tty7
tail -f will show you new lines in the file as they are added

7:48 PM
@Rinzwind I'll try this now, hang on

Script for ibus started at run_im.
that is the last line in my file

hm, no change from what I pasted

I wish there'd be timestamps
@Rinzwind [solved] but I can't seem to find the solution
no wonder SE works so well :)

bottom 1st page has 2

7:52 PM
is it this? quote: i finally fixed it by resetting compiz/unity with the following commands:

Code:

dconf reset -f /org/compiz/

setsid unity

that is one
2nd one
rm ~/.gconf ~/.gconfd ~/.metacity ~/.compiz-1 ~/.config/compiz-1 ~/.config/dconf -rf
but BOTH have also messages after that claiming not to work

:-/
I can't copy from the webpage and paste into tty2

nope
and the dconf one probably needs X ?
oh did you know you can delete almost all files in /home/$USER/ and it will recreate it after a reboot?
just don't delete your personal files when doing that ;)
it will also delete all settings (like bookmarks for browser)

@Rinzwind confirm.
@Rinzwind why would I want to do this? Seems dangerous, and I'd be sad to lose settings and whatnot

WTH. Tom Cruise dated Lindsay Lohan?
@TorbenGundtofte-Bruun oh I did it once just to test it >:D
good luck. Ill be back after diner :=)

8:01 PM
thanks! I'll be in bed then
@Rinzwind this didn't work either :/
good night!

Q: SSH broken when connected to VPN upon upgrading from Ubuntu 13.04 to 14.04

MikeI need to SSH into a server which is only accessible when I am connected to a VPN (PPTP). Using my Ubuntu 13.03 virtual machine, this works perfectly. First I connect to the VPN, then I ssh into the server. I have recently created a new Ubuntu 14.04 VM and am trying to use this instead. I have no...

sweet, Transistor(new game from people who made Bastion) is out on linux

I'm happy that people are bringing more games to linux. I do wish more game companies would make more choices based on engine portability though. That's where I really want it to go.
I think a lot of the games that never make it to linux are because most of the "ragdoll" engine plug-ins and other bits they just re-use are bits that are Windows only.

9:53 PM
hi can anyone help me real quick. I just reformatted a drive and now my fstab file is all wonky. I looked in gparted and all the dev allocations have moved around. DO i have to manually retype everything into the fstab file now?

Circumstantial and nothing to do without details. Ask a question on site with lots of diagnostic output.
