@GeorgeEdison dead battery?

@aking1012 It's a really stupid smoke detector - it's utility powered :P

12:20 AM
@msPeachy o_o

@msPeachy hopefully that's a song lyric

It is indeed, I was singing. I sing it every morning. I can relate to the first 5 lines though!
@RolandTaylor :)

Q: Is there possibly going to be an Ubuntu Setup Intro in the future?

UbuntuUser_1204I just wanted to know because if there is going to be, I have already made one. If you want to check it out, just email me at jericograntham@gmail.com and I will email it to you.

@msPeachy same here
If the you is a tasty coconut cooler (something like beer but it actually tastes good enough to get me tipsy) - then I'm in for the 6th line :P

@RolandTaylor LOL

12:26 AM
hic I'm not drunk! stumble

I prefer a little bit of red wine

jrg
@aking1012 Now I do the opposite. It's still not a very good one.

@RolandTaylor then you just fell --> line 7

@jrg heheh

jrg
Let me know if you need a reference.

@jrg ty. in all probability i will. if you want to send contact info via that email it would be great

@msPeachy :D

jrg
@aking1012 will do.

just make sure it's pgp-ed or the right email address ;)

@msPeachy heyyyyyyyyyyyy can I hic buy you a driiiiink?!

jrg
12:31 AM
LOL. Nothing in there that isn't on the Ubuntu wiki, or scattered in other places on the internet.

@RolandTaylor I'll probably say you've had enough drink for both of us

jrg
@aking1012 need anything other than name, title, email and phone #?

i shouldn't...it's about being able to fill in the blanks with IT people as opposed to acquaintances that think the terminal is arcane

jrg
Ok, let me know if you need a more grandiose title.

that's more than enough...i think you know what i meant about "oh noes...there's text on the screen so he must be magic" not flying as a reference

user image
Any thoughts?

jrg
@aking1012 heh.

@GeorgeEdison what does it add to the normal keyring?

It's basically just a nice GUI that generates RSA/DSA keys and encrypts / decrypts messages.
Eventually I'll add OpenPGP support too... hopefully...

maybe you should look at the utility they tout on launchpad setup for key generation

jrg
@GeorgeEdison that'd be useful.
seahorse sucks though.

12:54 AM
fair point...i more thought it would be more useful to pretty up existing tools than to write another cli wrapper
the price cut on refurb toughbooks is quite steep...just saying: refurb.buytough.com/store/comersus_index.asp
if the word black or purple is in the question it should auto-suggest to the OP reading the black-screen canonical question before posting...maybe a scroll down and "i have read and understand" button at the bottom

jrg
I think I will be getting primarily Thinkpads. I'm impressed with how well this thing works as a backtrack machine.
Very easy to protect my own stuff too - just unscrew one thing, pull the hard drive and boom my OS is safe, just boot from CD. ;P

@aking1012 This isn't a CLI wrapper.
It actually interfaces directly with the crypto libraries.

jrg

1:09 AM
Consequently, this app will run out-of-the-box on Windows and Mac.

jrg
Think there was a typo on that last bullet point?

@jrg Want. Even a netbook would be jealous.
Let me guess... a 32-cell battery?

jrg
@GeorgeEdison no clue.

No, no - that was a joke :P
Most lithium-ion batteries sold these days are either 6 or 12 cell.

jrg
9-cell battery with a additional slice.
"up to 30-hours battery life with the 9-Cell battery and additional slice battery for long business hours"

1:17 AM
I seriously don't believe that.

@GeorgeEdison fair point

jrg
i would like to see that

(I mean, I believe your quotation - I just don't believe what they said.)

jrg
I could see it happening.
no dvd, backlight all the way down, throttle the i7 down to almost nothing...
it'd be slow, but i could see it happening.

32.5 hours of battery life... if you boot to bios and just sit there

jrg
1:19 AM
can't find any third party reviews though, so...
Battery Life

The ultra-powerful 94Wh, 9-cell battery propelled our test unit to a whopping 15 hours of battery life during our standard battery rundown test (Windows 7 Balanced power profile, 70% screen brightness, wireless active and refreshing a web page every 60 seconds). This is above and beyond what we expect from a notebook, even one with this large of a battery. The 9-cell battery is a worthwhile upgrade. 15 hours!

most linux junkies like thinkpads (see what linus himself uses at the google-talk he did on why git pwns all other version control systems)

jrg
he moved to a macbook air though, he likes the hardware

:'(

jrg
i can't say i blame him

doesn't the macbook come with an nvidia card onboard?
har har

jrg
1:22 AM
if i was getting a new laptop and money was no object, i'd be very tempted to get one of those MBAs.
@aking1012 heh
i think it does
only the 2008-2010 models have nvidia. everything else is intel based

toughbook for the win (with an upgraded parkable seagate)

jrg
anyone here used snort?

@jrg you're a dev type guy...any thoughts on a unity lens abstraction layer for android? substitute intents for dbus
@jrg raises hand

jrg
@aking1012 haven't touched native android dev. :\
@aking1012 Worth setting up? seems a little daunting. :P

it wouldn't be native. lenses are mostly python and dbus
@jrg snort or the abstraction layer?

jrg
1:26 AM
@aking1012 not sure I understand your question there.
@aking1012 snort.

it's not complex to set up on a testing basis on a span port. if you're setting up loads of sensors etc etc it can get complicated

jrg
ok

as far as lenses i meant a fake dbus class so each "lens" magically becomes an app

jrg
oohhh... ok
that'd be interesting.

still far off on my list though. flashcards/audible flashcards are first to finish. then tagging off the last bit of that screen recorder. then that xmpp notifications android service thing (it wouldn't even have a gui, just pop messages in your "notifications area")
welcome back @lazyPower

jrg
1:32 AM
sell that android app for a buck.

the notifications area one? that's the plan

jrg
yeah
@lazyPower howdy

ty sirs
o/

have i mentioned that i love py4a? mostly... have you rubyists played with sl4a or other things in that family(jython on android ruboto etc etc)?

i've toyed with ruboto
but i haven't built anything interesting with it yet.

jrg
1:36 AM
@lazyPower do you have any old hard drives around? I'm looking, and I'd prefer to not spend the amount of money that places online are asking... :\
Haven't played with ruboto, but I keep hearing good things about it.
Someday I'll try something with it.

I'm curious how ruboto will treat gems. It interprets core ruby just fine.
@jrg i sadly do not. All my HDD's are occupied in my NAS

jrg
:(

I might have an old laptop hdd....
but i doubt that will help

jrg
actually, if it's 80GB or larger, that'd be amazing.
more than sufficient for my small army of helpless VMs.

Ok let me see if work can part with it
We aren't using it. If they want to hang on to it i cant help, otherwise i'd be more than happy to send it over

jrg
1:39 AM
let me know, i can pay for it, just name your (reasonable) price. :)

It would be cost of S&H if I can help
not looking to churn a profit from old hardware
ugh
i'm so spent. its been a crappy week - new VP comes in and i have a site to launch from concept to functional iteration by Wednesday

you'll be needing lots of coffee

jrg
looks like it can handle some gems @lazyPower

Nice.

1:42 AM
ruhroh...what have i started

jrg
nothing.
i don't have time to do anything. ;P

same :|

lol
/me seriously needs to learn to code >_>

I wanted to hack on stuff with marco
I'm such a putz

lol
I had a recruiter from a very CS theory heavy company e mail me
I'm a combination of excited and OH MY GOD WHAT AM I GOING TO DO.

1:47 AM
cs theory...shudders
implementation fine...theory erm...

Implementation always wins over theory
its about how fast you can move, and continue to move after you've started the ball rolling.

from what i'm reading they invariably ask coding questions, and things about Big(0)

to quote Jeff Atwood "Go fast, that way. If something gets in your way, turn."

I'm a forensics, security and management major...
and there's a good chance the recruiter found me off SU
;p
so there's no indication I'm a CS dude

1:50 AM
tell me four different ways you would solve this problem. now point out weaknesses of each. let's examine this way of solving it more deeply. find the youtube video. it's a great example

2:07 AM
lol

back
I forgot to say brb :(
@msPeachy lol

@JourneymanGeek i didn't say he did awesome...just that it was a good example

@RolandTaylor I thought you went to sleep cos you were drunk

@msPeachy hahaha
I went to eat and watch some tv
I actually ate with my family this time

2:19 AM
@RolandTaylor that's nice
hi @JourneymanGeek
You're happy today, 5 lol's in 15 minutes

@msPeachy: I got e mailed by a recruiter from a company I'd love to work for

wow, congrats. good for you

@JourneymanGeek congratulations :)

its just the first stage, and their recruitment process is notoriously tough
And I don't seem to meet the 'profile' of the average person they hire ;p
I'm strongly hardware oriented, and heavily self taught, and in no way a coder
(I'm not even sure I should mention the company, since you can look all this up on a search engine ;p)

@jrg know what i love the most about ruby? I spend more time writing comments about intent of my code than I do writing the code. -- so succinct. </ruby love>

2:35 AM
lol
@lazyPower: my brother loves python, cause it stays out of the way ;p

exactly how i feel about ruby

...and jrg leaves.

Q: Install Linux with 2 hard drives

rdecourtI am new to Linux. I have a machine with two hard drives, the first one has 80GB and the second has 120GB. I am about to format this machine and install Linux. I want to install all the main partitions (/,/boot,/usr/, etc..) on the first HD (sda) and mount the /home and /var partition on second ...

2:49 AM
@RolandTaylor ...and I am starving

@msPeachy oh what can I get you?
We have here some caterpillar soup,
Hagfish,
Stir Fried Roaches...

@RolandTaylor: A friend of mine has a fear of monkfish

@RolandTaylor eww

@msPeachy >:)

hands @RolandTaylor balut
The second creepiest thing I have seen

2:52 AM
@JourneymanGeek what is balut?

@JourneymanGeek balut is considered very tasty by most people here
but yes, it is creepy

Oh that!

yeah, have you tried one?

lol
I think the sight of that would have me throwing up, or hiding under a table.

2:59 AM
i'm cool on eating the embryo of a bird - no thanks

it is very yucky when you look at it but my sister says it is very tasty.
and it is cooked

/me is a veggie doggie.

I'll stick with pizza :) if its all the same

it is an egg, just underdeveloped

goes ravage an orange or something

3:00 AM
@msPeachy e_e no way

you mean fertilized. Most eaty eggs arn't

when you visit the Philippines, you must have one

>_< no way, no way, no way, no way, no way :D

/me will stick to durians as far as adventurous food goes

@RolandTaylor by then then you'd exclude Philippines to your list of places to visit.
@JourneymanGeek never tried durian
I just don't think I can eat it

3:02 AM
@msPeachy: You need to get over the stink barrier
Its worth it

@msPeachy lol I want to visit the Philippines - but I'll pass the on the eggs

@JourneymanGeek maybe I should give it a try...
@RolandTaylor lol, well then try "tuba"

why does that make me feel slightly disturbed inside? :P

which one? the balut or tuba?

tuba :D

3:08 AM

WTH IS THAT?

balut
and this is tuba

whew
is it safe to drink btw?

yes, my mother and father drink tuba
but I've haven't tried it yet
it is made from coconut

cool
Something tells me you are testing me :P
Testing my tolerance for exotic foods :P

3:11 AM
they say it is sweet
lol

@ajmitch what do you do for a job?

@RolandTaylor I myself haven't tried exotic foods here. I prefer veges and fruits.

:P
@msPeachy it looks rather rich

sure is, when my father and mother is on their tuba session, I go to my room, cos I don't like the smell, lol
@RolandTaylor I almost or did taste it once, because my father tricked me. They usually mix tuba with COKE, so before they start, I always ask for a glass of coke and little did I know, he poured a little bit of tuba into the glass, the moment it hit my tongue, I knew right away that it was tuba.

3:20 AM
@msPeachy :D
What does it smell like?
Alcohol?

@RolandTaylor like vinegar but very strong

yuck
e_e
I knew there had to be a catch to it :P

that is an ad for the "strongest" vinegar here
@RolandTaylor but my face didn't go like that...lol

3:24 AM
@msPeachy LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL

ha ha ha
there was a contest of "mukhasim" the asim face for that product
i guess he won

3:45 AM

i'm going out for lunch
bbl too

@RolandTaylor That stuff is... intense.
> "North Carolina is passing a law that would make it illegal for the earth to move towards or way from the sun at a nonlinear rate so this value should remain constant."
Lol. Lol. Lol.
It gets better:
> "Hmmm, North Carolina really has their act together. We need to get other states to adopt the same law though, or the sun will act differently there. We should really get the states to ratify it for a constitutional amendment. Once that is done we get the Fed to float a trillion dollar bond to pay off all the politicians and the great sun law will be the law of the land!"

4:15 AM
Hello all
@ObsessiveFOSS I used to get that
@RolandTaylor \o/ Can I haz tutorial and .blend files?

4:42 AM
@trampster I'm a software developer, why do you ask?

We are looking for a .net developer in christchurch at Tait
You live in NZ right?
We are having trouble getting high quality applicants and I remembered that you have been involved in mono packaging and so wondered if you are a .net developer and if so would you be interested in working at Tait

Nope.

I'm currently testing Mageia right now

Q: Is it possible to customize a removable drive launcher/quicklist?

ricardofcfSo, I do know that it is fairly easy to customize application shortcuts (launchers) by editing the respective .desktop file. But, is it possible to create custom quicklists to the removable drives' launchers? E.g. a "Format" option or "Properties" would be really useful.

I don't think, i fully understand, "removable drive's launcher"

5:36 AM
he is talking about the mounts in launcher

Unity launcher?

yes

:(

5:48 AM
im using nautilus extra to get right click "format" option... donno if it works on unity launcher or not

I think, it can be done

Q: Integrate ubuntu both 32 and 64 bit into a single DVD

NamshumI have both 32 and 64 bit ubuntu 12.04 iso but how can I integrate both 32 bit and 64 bit into a single DVD with a choice to install Clearly written like 1. Install Ubuntu 12.04 32 bit and 2. Install Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit and also without losing the Live Mode

Here is another good question.

@Anwar sir how long u are using ubuntu?

@penreturn sir??

There is no window border in gnome fallback :(

6:07 AM
@Anwar That was data, not another livecd

@AmithKK then it is even easier
just put them in the directory

Sir - surname for man. U get my respect!

hey penreturn

@penreturn First used Ubuntu hardy
was a non-regular user
I wanted to be regular since 10.04

I want more rep on SO and he is not accepting my answer!! grr

That is the most annoying thing..

especially when i want to unlock cool stuff on SO.

Why SO?

@Anwar building a better network profile

7:25 AM
oh. what stuff is cooler in SO than AU

Well, if you want to become a programmer, SO rep helps.

Ok.
i thought, you were referring to some other things

nah

ping me please (testing)

OK. some sort of off-topic question.
what is the difference between "thank" and "thanks"
is "thank" wrong?

question for ELU :P

You are a highly reputed user of ELU

7:29 AM
7
A: "Thanks" or "thank you"?

ThursagenThey're both correct. "Thanks" is slightly more informal, but otherwise, they both mean the same, a statement of gratitude. Although they're both correct, they have a difference. "Thanks" is a noun, and can be used like this: Give James my thanks./ I give you my thanks.(when speaking face...

nice!

@Anwar i have like 300. Far away from high reputed user etc

@jokerdino :P

@Anwar suspended for rules violation

@Microsoft you should see this question

@Anwar Maybe it means it thinks "Thank you Jim" should always have a comma ("Thank you, Jim").

@EliahKagan May be
