12:06 AM
It looks like I can't recover some old videos... :(

jrg
@GeorgeEdison :(
Ok google, what the heck does that have to do with site:askubuntu.com?

@jrg Those have got to be sponsored ads.

jrg
They are.

Nothing else could explain why they're so unrelated.

jrg
However they are not really relevant at all
Zombie Baby Puppet Anyone? (really sick - not in a good way)

12:09 AM
Yeah...check out the paid ad you get if you search for 'mcaffee trial'

@aking1012 What's so weird about that? All I see is an ad for Mcaffee 2012 or something.
@jrg Oy...

jrg
Exactly.

It's odd in that norton/symantec paid to come in over them for the search term mcaffee

@aking1012 Oh, now I see it. Yeah, that is weird.

hehehe

12:12 AM
@jrg looks friendly.

jrg
Understatement of the day.

Q: How do I use subprocess?
A:
<pre>
import subprocess
proc = subprocess.Popen("espeak 'Read the manual'",
shell=True,
stdin=None,
stdout=subprocess.PIPE,
stderr=subprocess.PIPE,
)
stdout_value, stderr_value = proc.communicate('')
</pre>
Who says programmers can't have a sense of humor

jrg
@lazyPower I think you showed me puppet.

wait What?

jrg
derp tyop flail.

12:14 AM
I showed you chef
I've never used puppet

pft, juju

jrg
I can't do juju with centos. sowwy marco.

Everybody here knows why i dont use juju, but I'd use juju if i could. Charms are where its at

yes you can*
[*] Just compile from source

with a lot of effort

jrg
12:15 AM
heh, no thanks

compile it and it will do what the tin says on it...
that doesn't look right...

I thought Juju was written in Python...
...what's this about compiling?

s/compile/package/
There's no rpm's yet

What about alien?
I've had remarkable success with that tool.

Alien...maybe I just wanted complex packages...never really worked for me that well.

jrg
12:20 AM
Ok, so I should learn chef and not puppet @lazyPower? Or both? (just for my lan + my numerous VMs, so its not super critical I follow some companies standards...)

@jrg Thats personal preference. You wont need puppet if you do chef.
you'll have ot make a decision if you want to run chef-solo or have a chef-server.
you'll need to create a repository of cookbooks, and start cataloguing your configs. My recommendation is get really comfortable with knife

jrg
Ok.

it will save you a ton of effort in the long run and you can script knife calls to automate deployments beyond what chef provides. I can deploy our database server and half of our application architecture for work with one script.
If you want, let me know when you start this venture and i'll look over your recipes.

jrg
Hm. Ok, I shall learn chef.

bookmark the opscode wiki ;) you'll want it

jrg
12:23 AM
Already done.

I don't know why but I have a strange craving for assembly programming right now...

jrg
Weird, I can't find anything about the open source edition of chef
its all about the hosted version
or is there a difference? I'm confused now.

Its basically teh same product
difference is, you host OS Chef, hosted chef takes the growing pains out of having a chef-server
i started using chef-solo to learn it, it was easier.
its not the most efficient way to do it if you have several machines, but the dicipline you learn in configuring the one or two instances with chef-solo will transfer over to chef-server.

jrg
Ok.
I'm probably making things difficult by having a lucid and a centos machine be my first two guinea pigs. :p

12:40 AM
@GeorgeEdison you're masochistic bro

jrg
It will always feel weird putting "Personal/Student" down as my company for things. :P

You could always state that you're an NPO
thats not technically untruthful :P you just dont have an EIN to back it up

jrg
nah, because there is always the chance that i'll end up using an account for something that makes me money.

12:55 AM
Fair

jrg
1:12 AM
whoa, chef is like, super easy.
will I ever need to manually ssh into a server and use bash on it again? :p

not after you get the bootstrapping process down
My suggestion, get a good nagios setup recipe and link them all into nagi, then you've got a reporting powerhouse for your cluster and probably wont have a need to interface with a machine manually.
i use splunk to peruse my logs with need and purpose, and i havent found much of a need to do things manually since i started this endeavor.

I can't remember who it was that got me hooked on Bootstrap here, but thank you.
It is easy to learn, extremely flexible, and it works great on mobile platforms.

probably JRG, he got me hooked on it as well.

I don't know what I did before Bootstrap (well, of course I do - I pulled out hair).

jrg
yeah, I'll get nagios going sometime in the next week.

1:24 AM
@GeorgeEdison theres another framework i've been using called Clean Dream - which is extremely nice if you like candy

Discovering Bootstrap was like the day I discovered jQuery :P

its not as responsive as bootstrap but it does have a flair to it.

@lazyPower Say no more - I will take a look at it.

jrg
big problem i have with nagios is getting dad to give up a VM slot in the safe zone - currently we only have one VM slot in the safe zone, the rest are in the DMZ. But because of the nature of a DMZ, I can't monitor things outside the DMZ.
@GeorgeEdison @lazyPower It was Marco or Jorge who got me interested in bootstrap.

@jrg yes you can -- use snorby
www.snorby.org

1:26 AM
@lazyPower I can't seem to find anything about Clean Dream anywhere...
My Google-fu is failing me.

I'm pulling it up, i got it off of theme forest for like $5 USD i think
Price has hiked since i bought it, but its also gotten quite a bit more candy added to it.

Weirdest error in IIS:
> "The request filtering module is configured to deny a request that contains a double escape sequence."
That happens when I have a URL containing 'C++'...

3:15 AM
its the two +'s
you need to edit your web.config and disable the scurity feature
hold on let me fish it up
@GeorgeEdison do you want to turn it off per application or system wide?
To enable it per application - add this bit to your web.config
<system.webServer>
<security>
<requestFiltering allowDoubleEscaping="True"/>
</security>
</system.webServer>

Thanks.

Hello all

o/ @AmithKK

@lazyPower Hello \o/

I have news for you, considering i've moved things about your subdomain on dasroot is now deactive.
blog.dasroot.net/post/moving-to-s3 -- this is more or less the reason why

I see
No Problem :)

Just wanted to make you aware so it wasn't a shock if you tried to visit it.

4:28 AM
Does the free t3 Micro Instance provide nonstatic file hosting :?

You can get free hosting for a year with micro server hosting. I'm not aware of any freebies outside of that.

Yeah, thats t3Micro

and i mean, full on vps - you can do what you will with it.

\o/
And also, If my marks are good enough. I might just get a RPi
I could completely host it on that
but Indian Badndwidth wont cut it
I'll Show you what I mean

You've mentioned before its flakey.

4:33 AM
@lazyPower Yeah
^^ Bootstrapped

Back in the mid to late 90's i hosted my blog off my dialup connection, it was fun :P

Fun :O
When I was banned from here (Because of being underage) I spent a whole day thinking I configured apache wrong

i'm over doing all that now htough, the cloud is so affordable if you pay attention to what you're doing. Why should I chew my bandwidth and spend the energy costs when data-centers are already doing all this for us?

Actually the problem was not my config
I cant access my dyndns on the local network
It leads me to the router config page
@lazyPower Where did you get that under construction page?

i built it

4:36 AM
Git it please :)

Ok, i'll ping you with it when i get back

\o/

i'm going to afk for a few.

OMG is back \o/

Good morning/afternoon/night/twilight everyone
Anybody know what version of pulseaudio 12.04 will use?

Thanks Octavian. Let me see if I am reading this right. It is the 1.1 version right?

@LuisAlvarado "1:1.1-0ubuntu12"
so, yeah, 1.1 with a few packaging updates

1:55 PM
Ok guys, thanks a lot. Was looking in the wrong place then.

@AmithKK its no problem. Glad I can help.
@jrg are you guys using Xen for your virtualization environment?

jrg
No, just stock VirtualBox right now.

ah ok. I'm looking into setting up Xen on a fringe PC and replacing vbox with it.

jrg
eventually i'm going to move us over to a LXC based setup since most of our stuff is ubuntu LTS based anyway.

Neat, i didnt know this existed.

jrg
LXC is freakin' amazing, its what powers juju for local deployments
Also, maybe i'm not looking in the right place, but is there a "upload this cookbook and all the other ones i have in my cookbooks dir" command?
or do i have to crawl through them manually? :)

7:34 PM
Yeah, LXC is pretty neat.

You can create a "cookbook" of recipies and upload the cookbook

jrg
ahhhhhhhhgggggggggggggg. i'm in dependency hell trying to use this nagios cookbook.

you usually assign those as a role though
and then deploy teh role

jrg
Oh, that makes sense.

I'm afraid VLC 2.0 is a disappointment. CPU usage has shot up from previous versions.

jrg
7:39 PM
Must be a Windows thing, I haven't noticed it here.

I'll second that notion. VLC is still being a champ here.

jrg
VLC media player 2.0.0 Twoflower (revision 2.0.0-0-g421a4fc) on precise doesn't seem to be a CPU hog.

that will cause the node to poll the chef server once its assigned, fetch its JSON config and go from there

jrg
Ooooohhh.... ok, this is making a lot of sense.

@lazyPower Yeah, probably a Windows thing then.

jrg
7:42 PM
dangit, i'm going to run out of paper for my chef notes.

Google Docs is awesome for that
couple that with a netbook or a tablet and you have portable notes

jrg
Indeed.
I wish Google would search my google docs in my search results though.
since otherwise its somewhat useless for me (maybe i'm lazy, maybe i'm not)

@jrg dont wish too much, they might be listening...

Since your notes are searchable inside of google docs... you're almost there

jrg
@BrunoPereira haha.

7:45 PM
that or you can just vim them in markdown and keep it version controlled with git.
a quick grep through the directory will tell ya what you want to know

jrg
Thats what I'm doing for a lot of things.
git + dropbox + grep + markdown = PROFIT.

We Have the Techonology! \o/
I'm rather sad about my mono question, its got a bounty and i'm still missing the mdb binary and an explanation on how to get it in unbuntu.

@jrg sounds like you need a google docs lens for unity :)

now that is a winning idea @ajmitch

@lazyPower I could answer that but you won't like the answer

jrg
7:48 PM
@ajmitch You making one? ;)

i'm going to guess its the same flamebait i've already gotten - dont use mono

@lazyPower no, it's more a case of the debugger not being supported in recent versions of mono

OH, i didnt know that
can you cite your resource?
if so, drop that on the question in question.

@jrg I'm going to work on another lens that also requires authentication, so I'll see if I can generalise it for a nice way of authenticating lenses
@lazyPower sure, this comes from a debian mono team person :)

jrg
@ajmitch From what I understand @OctavianDamiean is working on a github lens, he might have something.

7:51 PM
Not yet, some personal issues interfered.

Q: Debugging Mono outside of MonoDevelop

lazyPowerI've been writing a console application in C# using MonoDevelop. While I can run the application and pass command line arguments to it, i cannot for the life of me figure out how to debug it and pass in arguments. I've tried using the command line to launch MDB - Instructions Here However on Ub...

It is still on my radar though.

@OctavianDamiean right, I'll look at what I need to do to get a lens asking for credentials, I can think of a couple of ways to do it
might talk with the unity peoples about it

I'm wondering if it wouldn't be worth it to just prompt on install, store in couchdb/keyring, profit.

If you do and I'm around let me know, otherwise a log would be great.

7:53 PM
@lazyPower nope, that's the ugly way to do it :)

bad UX associted with it?

that'd work only for single users of a system - what I'm thinking is along the lines of a d-bus service which you poke for credentials, that service can then handle the authentication
ubuntu-sso-client already does this for LP & U1

Admittedly I dont know much about dbus, but it sounds interesting.

dbus is just a way to communicate

A: Debugging Mono outside of MonoDevelop

ajmitchSupport for the 'hard debugger' is no longer included in the runtime, so the mono-debugger package was removed from Debian & Ubuntu. The interface that monodevelop uses is called the soft debugger, and there is the start of a command-line client for that at https://github.com/alexrp/sdb-cli

@lazyPower it's not much but I hope it can help

Awesome. THanks for the knowledge bomb. Its not letting me award the bounty, but i will when it opens.

7:58 PM
np, mono & ubuntu & me go way back ;)

I had no idea the hard debugger was basically AFK. The docs still point at it fairly firmly. So i was under the impression it was still around. Out of date documentation? that never happens....

Yeah...

Does anyone know what the deal is with flash not working for 11.10?

Dunno about any deal, as last time I tried flash on 11.10 I had no problems

Hmmm. I updated form 11.04 and now it's not working

8:02 PM
64bit or 32 bit?

hmm i'm 64 bit across teh board here, and its working -- not well - but working.

the apt DL here - get.adobe.com/flashplayer - sends me to the software center
has it ever work well?

jrg
try installing the flashplugin-installer package.

worked**
I have - no fix
I get a situation similar to this - askubuntu.com/questions/16732/…
But this problem isn't answered
Bummer....

Orly!?

8:41 PM
lol

I thought the Sith are dead.

@OctavianDamiean not! :/

Well, Vader threw the emperor down into the Death Star's reactor core and then dies too shortly afterwards. Makes zero Sith and one wounded Jedi.
On the other hand in the video game Jedi Outcast there are Sith again. :(
They just won't go away will they?

jrg
Always two there are.

@OctavianDamiean Dam it, now who is gona help me kill the stupid Jedi?

jrg
8:51 PM
@OctavianDamiean which sith lord circled you?

Wait what!?

jrg
Curses.
we have elected a sith lord to a position of power in the ubuntu community.

@jrg The question that is, young Padawan.
You must be kidding me. An Amazon book search for Star Wars resulted in 39,618 Results!

Oh wait ... those results were not filtered correctly.
But still 2,189 Results!

8:59 PM
only? :D

jrg
Its telling me 30,733 english results

much to read you have

jrg
Lack of time I have.
@lazyPower Ok, just came up with an idea.

9:10 PM
Not sure if I can even explain how much I want this. :D

i want a real death star :D

Who doesn't?
I'd have a Rancor as a pet, just like Jabba.

@jrg its been done -- see: Jorge castro's octopress blog.

You visit me and don't like my self-made cake, you get to play with my pet Rancor named Mr. Tickles.
3

@jrg matter of fact, see MY octopress blog :P

jrg
9:14 PM
@lazyPower Nonono.
not like that.
more like wordpress, using git as a backend.

i'd play insult swordfighting with lightsabers :D

hmmm :-? yet another lightsaber, as it seems. Jedi's build lightsabers. Developers build blogs.

how appropriate, you fight like a cow

haha. You get to play with my pet rancor Mr Tickles
+1 @OctavianDamiean. You make AMAZING cake

jrg
Nope, you get to play with my Wampa and my Acklay.

9:17 PM
@jrg sounds interesting. Sketch out the flow and how this will be different enough from wordpress to make people want to switch.

i18n is one of the ugliest aspects of programming.
Though I'm convinced everything would be alright if everyone used UTF-8.

probably the only way to make siri work. >:D

^--this

@aking1012 That looks neat.

it's really interesting intellectually. i don't see it taking off though

Wow this really vex's me
i cant upgrade the kernel on this box, as the kernel build fails, but so does the Xen-Hypervisor package :|

@GeorgeEdison - you'll NEVER guess how i found it

9:36 PM
may be time to retire this stupid tower

@lazyPower may be. I had an old dell fail based on specific i586/686 functions failing on a windows install. could be the problem there too i suppose
assert FEATURE or CRASH

This tower was a gimme, so i wont lose much sleep over getting rid of it

@GeorgeEdison - it's colo-ed with justfsckinggoogleit.com
@lazyPower - yeah. cheaper to buy a new one than spending the man-hours monkey-patching it to get kernel, then every package that asserts the same

Boy, this language is very interesting - it certainly aims to reduce some of the ambiguity that is English.

It aims to be perfectly logical...something that is overlooked in most modern languages

9:43 PM
@lazyPower: Oh, before I forget, I wrote a small Python program that minifies JS code with Google's Closure compiler.
I think you mentioned a while back that you had succeeded as well?

Pretty similar to what I came up with: github.com/nathan-osman/StackTack/blob/master/build.py
(Ignore the ugly CSS minification code there too.)

Mine is basically a simple mod on the google script. I couldn't in any honesty take it as my own creation. That and it was a learning experience in python :)

10:22 PM
Life failure #1,208 - Didn't bother to spellcheck the tattoo artist

haha
just add some red wavy lines :P

their all wrong.

@htorque - red wavy lines was epic

really the only cheap way to fix it :D

10:45 PM
XX - bullets are cheap

11:16 PM
OH man i've really borked this now. The box by itself keeps bootlooping into memtest, and the install cd i've got usb-written is complaining it cant find the cd. \o/ hurray

if it makes you feel any better i'm fighting with getting ntdll.h weird includes for native code working with mingw32

Not really but we'll eventually get this ironed out or give up and get the bullets out to solve a problem.
I'd like to take this box out and give it the office space treatment

nice
i need to get this working. bad enough eclipse doesn't support cross-compiling out of the box, but trying to pan out what is an eclipse IDE malfunction and what is an actual problem is starting to get me irritated

i thought you could do network installs of ubuntu server :? is that not the case?

i haven't tried. i always use desktop or alternate...sorry

11:31 PM
@lazyPower you can, but kind of

I think i just have a failed boot media. even the disk cehck is failing

Guys can someone point me to where the error log from tasksel would be?

good night all!
enjoy:

Can't see to get install mail-server to stop from crashing, I've tried deleting postfix and exim4 etc, but for some reason I always end up crashing.
can't seem*

11:52 PM
thank god for rescue mode on a bootdisk
chroot + beating it with a rbfh worked a charm.
