Ok, so I should learn chef and not puppet @lazyPower? Or both? (just for my lan + my numerous VMs, so its not super critical I follow some companies standards...)

@jrg Thats personal preference. You wont need puppet if you do chef.

you'll have ot make a decision if you want to run chef-solo or have a chef-server.

you'll need to create a repository of cookbooks, and start cataloguing your configs. My recommendation is get really comfortable with knife

it will save you a ton of effort in the long run and you can script knife calls to automate deployments beyond what chef provides. I can deploy our database server and half of our application architecture for work with one script.

If you want, let me know when you start this venture and i'll look over your recipes.

Its basically teh same product

difference is, you host OS Chef, hosted chef takes the growing pains out of having a chef-server

i started using chef-solo to learn it, it was easier.

its not the most efficient way to do it if you have several machines, but the dicipline you learn in configuring the one or two instances with chef-solo will transfer over to chef-server.

I'm probably making things difficult by having a lucid and a centos machine be my first two guinea pigs. :p

My suggestion, get a good nagios setup recipe and link them all into nagi, then you've got a reporting powerhouse for your cluster and probably wont have a need to interface with a machine manually.

i use splunk to peruse my logs with need and purpose, and i havent found much of a need to do things manually since i started this endeavor.

I can't remember who it was that got me hooked on Bootstrap here, but thank you.

It is easy to learn, extremely flexible, and it works great on mobile platforms.

probably JRG, he got me hooked on it as well.

I don't know what I did before Bootstrap (well, of course I do - I pulled out hair).

Discovering Bootstrap was like the day I discovered jQuery :P

its not as responsive as bootstrap but it does have a flair to it.

big problem i have with nagios is getting dad to give up a VM slot in the safe zone - currently we only have one VM slot in the safe zone, the rest are in the DMZ. But because of the nature of a DMZ, I can't monitor things outside the DMZ.

ah ok. I'm looking into setting up Xen on a fringe PC and replacing vbox with it.

eventually i'm going to move us over to a LXC based setup since most of our stuff is ubuntu LTS based anyway.

Yeah, LXC is pretty neat.

You can create a "cookbook" of recipies and upload the cookbook

that'd work only for single users of a system - what I'm thinking is along the lines of a d-bus service which you poke for credentials, that service can then handle the authentication

ubuntu-sso-client already does this for LP & U1

Admittedly I dont know much about dbus, but it sounds interesting.

A: Debugging Mono outside of MonoDevelop

Support for the 'hard debugger' is no longer included in the runtime, so the mono-debugger package was removed from Debian & Ubuntu. The interface that monodevelop uses is called the soft debugger, and there is the start of a command-line client for that at https://github.com/alexrp/sdb-cli

Boy, this language is very interesting - it certainly aims to reduce some of the ambiguity that is English.

OH man i've really borked this now. The box by itself keeps bootlooping into memtest, and the install cd i've got usb-written is complaining it cant find the cd. \o/ hurray

if it makes you feel any better i'm fighting with getting ntdll.h weird includes for native code working with mingw32
