classic

wait did it get greenlit for Jon?

@TheMuffinCoder nah
that's the ios version

Jon
@dh what
That button doesn't go to next level

Ever since I got a plugin that limits my open tabs to 5, I been more conscience on only opening tabs I actually need/will look at

Jon
@DH. Tell me how to reproduce

12:14 AM
@TheMuffinCoder That sounds annoying

lol nah their default setting was annoying where if you opened more than 5 tabs, your oldest tab would get closed
now I set to just stop me from opening more than 5, so I can pick which to close
(Please u can change the # to what ever u want)

Jon
@DH. Tell me damn you

nuff reposts. 1) read the disclaimer of Early access and the one on download 2) read the description, has some warnings 3) Keep this in mind 4) Linky: gamejolt.com/games/minertyper/183931

No Man's Sky
if you're part of the dev team
and you're applying for another gamedev job elsewhere in the future
do you say you worked for the company that lied to the public
@arda I mined a bit :D

12:30 AM
you just say that sean lied and said that you worked there and act like you never worked there

Got tired of typing though lol

@ChrisMcFarland haha mission completed

what a cheater

OH DAMMIT I FORGOT THE DEBUG COMMAND IN THE GAME
@ChrisMcFarland do not write ddebbugg

Isn't lying to the public common practice in the game industry
That might give you a leg up

12:34 AM
well save files aren't encrypted (and I have no plans to make them so - the game is free and users can ruin it for themselves if they want), but I'd rather remove the debug command

DH.
@Jon Stage 1-15, fail the level, click to retry
@Jon And about the first bug, it's minimal, I only see the number increasing while the fade out is being executed

Jon
Fuck sakes

this is the part of game dev i hate most
it's ready! (bug) ok now it's ready (bug) ok got it now (bug) fuck ok fixed ready now (bug) GOD DAMN IT

"Jon Gallant is proud to release GORB Service Pack 1"

@ChrisMcFarland GORB Anniversary Update
don't have a touchscreen? Cortana will help you remove the orange box with voice

12:50 AM
Would you like to update to GORB 10

@Slereah pick one:

"GORB has finished downloading an update. Your game will restart in 15 seconds. Any unsaved progress will be lost."

You can now download new levels from GORB Store

One thing my iphone does is "since you don't want to update the OS, would you like the update to launch tonight"
While you are asleep and vulnerable

man, that iOS loading screen, updating by bedside at night is painful
full bright white screen, max brightness
for like 5 minutes

12:53 AM
Thinking about it, my z-sorting for tiles recalculates it every turn
Which sounds bad

I don't think the tiles are gonna change position

I love windows 10 but the kinda auto upgrades were annoying for some

yeah it's dumb

>love windows 10
BURN THE WITCH

12:54 AM
Yay, Nintendo has sent me my Wii U promo codes to distribute

AAAand ludum dare 36 is over

Let's make a maze and see how well the pathfinding does
Ahah
The pathfinding only works on visible tiles, so it was fast BUT he keeps bumping into walls

Jon
1:10 AM
@DH. Thanks

Poor thing has no idea how to navigate the maze

DH.
Np

@Slereah give him a helmet

Finally got there

Jon
Published a fix

1:11 AM
It tried to go all the way around the maze just in case there was an opening

Jon
@Almo I send you the code tomorrow

ok no problem

Jon
That bug could have been bad
@DH. Let me know if you find anything else

DH.
Sure
Oh and just sent you the store page translation on your email listed on play store
See if came

Jon
Swwwwweeeeeet
Got it thanks man
<3

1 hour later…
2:52 AM
@Jon haha the gorb page apple badge redirects to picross still

4 hours later…
user92578
6:48 AM
@Almo umm, yes?

user92578
8:38 AM

user92578
Fighting with the annoying small offset between the arm and the blade

nooooice

@Tyyppi_77 I keep expecting it to speed up on the downswing

user92578
lol I'll speed to whole thing up once I figure out the issue, as it's a lot easier to spot when the blade moves slowly

user92578
Once it moves fast enough you won't probably be looking for the speed up

8:46 AM
Heh true

user92578
so I think I need to somehow adjust for something

user92578
I just need to figure out what I need to take into account that currently I'm not

Can you remove the iceblock to see if it's just moving the entire thing one pixel?

user92578
The arm part seems to be moving ~0.5 screen pixels vertically and horizontally

user92578
So that's 0.5 / 4 = 0.125 world-space pixels

8:51 AM
Maybe it keeps rounding it slightly differently due to floating point imprecision?

user92578
Yeah, probably

user92578
However the end result seems to very from 0 to 2 world-space pixels, so 0 to 8 screen pixels

user92578
const float rotationRadians = GDegreesToRadians(m_Sprite->GetRotation());
const TVector2 circlePosition = TVector2(cosf(rotationRadians), sinf(rotationRadians));

m_EntityBlade->SetPosition(m_Position + (circlePosition * m_SpinnerArmRadius) - TVector2(32.0f, 32.0f));

user92578
That's my current code. m_Sprite->GetRotation() returns the rotation of the arm

What's TVector2? Floating point or fixed?

user92578
9:01 AM
two floats

Hmmmmmmmmm
I 'unno then
Try just writing the coordinates to the console every frame?

Jon
9:15 AM
Make it draw dots every few ms
At the center.
See if it draws a circle

1 hour later…
DH.
10:39 AM
Got 150 stars on GORB yesterday, no more bugs found

DH.
And don't worry Chris, still working at your translation, 100 strings so far :P

Oh yeah, I should do the translation thing. Just, sooo many things to do |_|

And don't worry Chris, still working at your translation, 700 strings so far :P
I should leave things aside and start working on that again actually

I also want to write an article for the procjam zine probably

10:50 AM
It's all good
Life has lots of things to offer
I'm not your boss, cracking the whip to make you work on it 8 hours a day lol

I should stop playing with the nail I broke so I don't break it further
That sounds like it would be a good thing to do

(It's a tear that goes at like a 45 degree angle so I really don't want it to spread)

lol
Now you've got me thinking of that fight in God of War (2 or 3?) where you're fighting atop that huge giant
and you rip his thumbnail off
absolutely gross lol

2 hours later…
12:36 PM
^ Creature definitions
basic creature types will have some basic definitions of what to have
but then their elite and boss variations, will be able to tick more bools and add more spells and weapons and stuff I think!

Nice

I will probably duplicate the definition class to cater for both "classes" and "races"
cuz you could have a squishy Fire Mage as a class
but if its race was a Golem, it might be quite tanky
or if it was a Bird race, it would have wings
though if you had a Golem Bird, it'd be both. lol

1:11 PM
oh chris, you could be the man
if I have a font file loaded in unity have you any experience or knowledge about adding character to that file?

1:23 PM
@Tyyppi_77 just saw a cool Finnish word and thought of you. Nothing important. :)

1:44 PM
seksikäs

user92578
@Almo Those "connected" words are awesime

2:07 PM
:)

2:50 PM
Lots of questions this morning..!

user92578
Bad questions

DH.
Yeah, mostly beginner questions where they don't show that they have tried something

user92578
"Please tell me how to make my game"

Program it. Make some art. Make some sound. Show the art, play the sound. Set these up so they require the player to do something specific.

This is newbish..

Q: Game optimization and keyboard events

Mikko-Pentti Einari EronenI've been putting some (a lot) of thought about how to read keyboard input and especially, when. Looping through all the keycodes on the keyboard and updating the statuses seems like a lot of waste when there are only few keys pressed at one time. I started to think that if the game gives a pla...

You don't have issues with you keycode handling. Carry on.

user92578
3:09 PM
Yeah

3:28 PM
I'm tiered of reviewing this guy's not-thorough-enough edits...
tired*

user4704
Reject them

user4704
Links?

user4704
I think improving counts as accepting, if you really think they are too trivial you should reject first.

user4704
I don't think that one is bad though.

user4704
3:40 PM
An edit doesn't have to fix everything it should just make it substantially better.

user4704
Changing a tag or a word or two is usually insufficient.

Well they're not bad, it's just that, while you're at it, why not make the title as an actual question, make sure the tags are appropriate, remove the polite trivialities, etc.

user4704
shrug

Yes, improving counts as accepting.
Yup :P

user4704
Some people don't consider that so important.

user4704
3:45 PM
Question titles don't have to be in the form of a question after all.

user4704
And some people think removing the trivialities like "thanks" and whatnot artificially sterilizes and dehumanizes the whole interaction.

Hmm, well I don't remember where I read they should be avoided...

I'll reject an edit that just does that, but if there are other things to improve I'd remove it as wel

Yeah; I don't just remove the 'thanks' or change the title to a question.. if there is something else to improve, I'll focus on that and improve the rest..
So maybe I should not remove the 'Thanks' then.. :)

4:00 PM
@Pip I updated my A* implementation, found at github.com/kd7uiy/AStar

Pip
noice

It doesn't have all of the speed improvements that I would like to include, but it's far better than what I had.

Pip
your README is outdated

Doesn't surprise me...
I'll work on that.
Wait, I forgot to include Tuple.cs too... Sigh.

Pip
lol

4:10 PM
That's what I get for not testing in the exact configuration I submitted the code.
Anyways, just submitted something that should be a bit better.

Pip
cool

The nice thing, at least I think, about my library is it is very flexible, allowing any arbitrary node to be used.
I actually use it for two things, for finding the pathway between cities, and between individual tiles.
The cities will work in the event of two land cities not on the same continent, for instance.
Now, if I can just get #1033 pulled in to Project Porcupine...

DH.
5:10 PM
Oh fuck now that I saw, I had 2800 emails from our CI because 3 jobs were still running while they should be excluded

With 2800 emails, I'd feel popular... or spammed a lot.. :P

DH.
Probably the later since all 2800 emails are from the same CI bot

Jon

Continuous Integration. Travis CI, Circle CI?

DH.
5:16 PM
^Yup, that
We use Hudson

how is it? I've only used Travis

DH.
Well Hudson by itself is quite decent, but rather inconsistent on some jobs
We have some unknown errors sometimes on some tasks, and all we have to do is run again and error disappears

Ah yes, my favorite sort of problem
a race condition for the modern age

DH.
Well, Hudson is aimed towards Java, can't complain more than that :P

yeah it looks like a companion to Jenkins?

Jon
5:22 PM
Leroy

DH.
Jenkins is like the son of Hudson that became cool since it's more recent

Jon
MmmmmmmmJenkinssss

Jon
5:41 PM
I was brigaded or something
All of a sudden picross Touch on steam has a ton of exactly the same review comment

@Jon It seems to me every time I see this that it should bounce a bit more...

Jon
One guy suggests a 8 paid app as alternative. I'm wondering if this is from the other picross dev

Pip
Hmm

Jon
Bouncyness is upgradeable

Pip
How the frick do I install certificates through the cli

Jon
5:43 PM
Wut u mean
I'm replying to all haters with bullshit marketing words
Thank you for your interest in Picross Touch. Picross Touch provides high quality puzzles at an unbeatable price, free. We are glad you tried our free game. Please play again soon.

DH.
Feels kinda robotic

Jon
Joking.

DH.
Ah for a moment thought you were serious

5:58 PM
sounds an appropriate repsponse, actually

Jon
6:37 PM
it gets annoying to read the same annoying comment over and over
Makes me want to ditch support completely
Don't like it eh? well fuck it its done. fuck you all
I was planning workshop support
larger grids -- user levels with ratings
But I literally made about 500$ off this game in 3 years
So why bother?
Then to top it all off people are shitting on me for giving it out for free

people suck

Jon
6:54 PM
@Almo I sent you latest.
I am almost certain some picross group brigadded my comments
It was all decent productive comments, then BLAM I got like 10 negative in a row

:(
dorks

Sie
God this medication sucks. The only way I got any sleep today was with a Tylenol PM.

one of our lead programmers is the bassist for this band. they sound good if you like metal! :)

Jon
that isn't metal

The closest metal this sounds like is "heavy metal"...

Jon
7:08 PM
would suck to be in that band -- there are like 71 members

Well you can easily take a day off.. "Hey Gerry, I can't go to the show tonight, here, take the mask, you'll replace me!"

Jon
you only get a 10% cut of profits

@Jon ok hard rock or wahtever you want to call it, I know more about the differences between various types of techno and ambient music. :)
still I think it sounds quite good for people who have other jobs.

Jon
its fine
There are so many people making music now, its just not really relevant
Similarly to gamedev

Most musician in bands around here that I know off have day jobs :P

7:14 PM
doesn't need to be relevant to be good :)

Jon
Most musicians I know around here all think they are going to make it big

many of the techno dudes I listen to must have audiences numbered in the thousands (or even less)

Well as they say.. go big or go home :P

Jon
I went to my friends house once, and he had these two guys over that made music -- so I asked about it since I was looking for music for GORB at the time.

GORB!

Jon
7:17 PM
Go to the computer room, and put on soundcloud --- oh man how awkward it became

they sucked?

Jon
These two guys start rapping along with their song -- it was gangster rap

hahahah
GORB with gangsta rap

Jon
And they kept pointing to each other and I didn't know what to do
I pretended to like it
But they were literally performing for me.. it was super weird

hahah :)

Jon
7:19 PM
another thing I am not a huge fan of is when shitty guitar players pull out guitars at parties

hahah yeah

Jon
So i went to this french girl's house -- and she had a french person party
literally 5 guys with guitars all playing at the same time

I'm very happy with the comments I've gotten on the one track I finished.

Jon
singing french music at the top of their lungs

haha

Jon
7:20 PM
so drop your track
btw, did you see that parallax i did?
the gif above

oh shit that looks awesome dude

Jon
doesn't really do it justice
i optimized the fuck out of the mini-game

:)

Jon
there are only 60 stars and 60 platforms
max at all times
and 10 signs

this is ambient, no beats or anything. So honestly I don't expect that many people to like this. :)
headphone music for sure
most of it's in the ambience
and stereo effects

Jon
7:23 PM
its not very harmonic
it has a couple of keys that are eery
There is a video of him talking about creating the music for this movie, it is pretty interesting.. cant find it
but anyways it kinda reminded me of this

funny thing, when it ends, that's just the reverb units clearing out. I played the whole thing through to figure out what would happen next, and I said to myself, "Oh shit. I think it's already finished."

1 hour later…
8:50 PM
It's quiet... too quiet...

I'm here now

Jon
HEY ALL YOU GORBAMANIACS!

Praise the leader!

Jon
What is going on

9:00 PM
Hello

awesome

Jon
Awwww yeeeeeeeah

Sie
9:42 PM
I'm in a bit of a rut. I'm at the point where most core features are fleshed out enough for me to continue level designs but turns out it's a much harder task than I thought. I have some done but even those were a bit challenging. I don't really have the money to take someone else on board and nobody trusts or likes rev-share so what do I do now?

Jon
Put it on the back burner
Level design is hard.

Sie
Well then what should I work on now?

Aye, level design is hard
I'm not sure I've heard of any rev-share success stories, apart from siblings that are in it together, or close friends

Jon
You need to try to utilize mechanics in clever ways

Sie
So you're saying I should get my mom to adopt someone to help me finish my game?

9:47 PM
Sure
ez
Like anything in life, keep chipping at it yourself, take a break, or just chalk it up as a learning experience
Game developement is hard

Jon
Like a rock

Sie
Tell me about it.

Rocks have it easy though

Sie
I'm really tempted to start a new project but I've spent almost a half a year on this project alone.

Older than we are
Sitting around doing nothing all day
@Sie Choice is yours. Would you be willing to spend another 6 months on it doing level design and whatever else is needed?

9:51 PM
don't fall prey to the sunk-cost fallacy

Sie
@ChrisMcFarland Ya. The thing of it is though it's not really the game development part that is the hardest to me. This is going to sound super cheesy but depression has been the biggest obstacle. I'm on this medication that helps out a lot but one of the side effects that's been impacting me is insomnia. It sucks.

the trick then is to find a gamedev project that fits your motivation profile
this is why my projects are just gameplay things without social features or online stuff.

Jon
All I know is. It's normal to ditch a project that isn't working.

Sie
Define working.

Ah yikes
Yeah like, programming is one thing - creating systems, implementing the UI, handling user input, etc
And then the other side of gamedev is doing the art, the story, the game design, level design -- the stuff that doesn't necessarily happen by typing a few lines
Stuff that is not reusable, because it's content that the player might only experience once
If you're burned out atm, just take a break too
heck, I took a month-long break from Tallowmere a couple times

Sie
9:55 PM
I just did. I tried working on it and got some stuff done but now I'm back and don't feel like doing much of anything.

take a break then
another one lol
I've abandoned many a prototype - it's okay

Jon
I took a break on Gorb
Like 6 months
Level design kills you
I got back to it and pumped out a ton more levels then polished

Sie
@ChrisMcFarland It's just hard even thinking that is an option lol. I really thought this project was going to be my first real game.

Jon
My first game was put aside

@Sie Is your thing fun?
Cuz that was my driving force

Sie
9:59 PM
I'd say so.

Take a break then
Close this chat
Go watch a movie
Go for a walk
Play some other games
Go visit some friends
Put this on hold while you reinvigorate yourself imo

Sie
It's a puzzle game. I'd say the biggest issue with developing a puzzle game is that level design must be a strong or else the whole thing falls apart.
@ChrisMcFarland Ok.

That's what I do anyway hah
Good luck

Jon
That is why I asked you what other plans you had aside from a bridge and a door
Your mechanic is cool and new. But what can it do

@Jon That's a long break :D

Jon
10:08 PM
I prototyped a lot of shit
I felt it was my best shot
I'm gonna finish space taxi too just because
One of my childhood favourite games

Jon

Q: How can i remove the margins in Window_Base?

Memor-XSo i am remaking Window_Status for my game where i have the character battler displayed in the background. bellow is the portion of the script which adds the battler image bitmap = RPG::Cache.battler(@actor.battler_name+"_menu", @actor.battler_hue) cw = bitmap.width ch = bitmap.height src_rect =...

Jon
10:49 PM
Galacticab
@almo how long before the ios version can be published?

11:17 PM
Fuck boss battles.
Probably Thursday for submission then a few days for approval

boss battles are fun
gives the developer an excuse to code something new

They interrupt gameplay I'm giving up on gun Gungeon because I'm fucking tired of the boss battles
I get to play nice procedural levels only to have to fight a boss again and lose

I gave up on Gungeon cuz I'm bad at dodging bullets
I also dislike the pause the game adds before enemies die
like the enemies get hit, they stop for a moment, and *then* they fall over, it feels off
@Almo If the bosses were just normal mobs somewhere in the level, would that make it feel better?
kinda thinking Diablo2-esque
ugh I can't type this morning, brain is not awake enough, typos out the wazoo

11:33 PM
@ChrisMcFarland hahah
what annoys me is bosses that require some tricky action... THREE TIMES (or more holy shit) to beat. It's like, I proved I can do it. Why do I have to do it three times. It becomes a stamina issue, can you not fuck up doing the same thing over and over.
@jon 1-8 works with one click now
i'll have Trena try it again

yeah, bosses that are too hard kind of ruin it in a permadeath game
I've had it happen to me many a time
Diablo 3, man
fighting bosses that do insane amount of AOE and "dont stand in the fire" spells
Path of Exile too

hehe :)

Sie
I might just take another break. I've been meaning to start prototyping a game like Binding of Isaac but in 3D.

as much as I like procedural generation, I dislike the turn-based style of Rogue, because you can't move out of harm's way aptly enough, you just attack or use a spell and hope you come out victorious

Sie
11:48 PM
I like the way Binding of Isaac does things. Only thing is Rebirth is significantly easier than the old game.

Yup it's fun

Jon
Can you crash the level select @Almo
