12:04 AM
@IcyDefiance Thats your fault though, not the tool's.

12:30 AM
Evening.

1:01 AM
hey hey

1:11 AM
approaching canada release of my number game. redid the front page, account page redesigned, and to be implemented over the weekend
then tutorial (two weekends, I think) and iOS is out
then the droid prog gets going on the droid version

I've only lost 9 games in a row! :D

Hey guys am just wondering
Do any of you know/use COBOL or know someone who does?

well stop that
you are a danger to society when you wonder

@SpartanDonut 9 games of what?

League

1:13 AM
oh shit

Placed Bronze 3 ftw

we gotta get you some winz

am silver 5

Sometimes they're my fault... other times my team is just wow

this season?

1:13 AM
Learning Vim and Perl at the same time is hard.

I was silver 4 last season, brzone 2 this season

Hey back to my question

learning Vim ......... is hard.

Does anyone know/user COBOL?

regardless of what else you're doing

1:14 AM
Yeah I was silver last season. Taking a break from league probably didn't help

Yeah.

I use it, I know.

It's difficult.
Got any tips for me Almo?

I am just going to not learn VIM ever

I tried EMACS... really did not fucking like it

1:14 AM
EMACS MASTER RACE

I mostly just hover around in insert mode, that's pretty bad practice right?

Vim vs Emacs wars begin

EMACS suck shit million-meta-key-shit-fuck

xD I dont use either

Vim is hard mainly because it is modal
once you get used to that, it's quite usable
being a wizard takes time though
5

1:15 AM
drink monsters energy drink

i knew a programmer who wrote programs with 200k lines with vi

TIME TO LEARN VIM

I kinda like it so far. There are some things I just can't figure out though.

Pip
@hasherr hey bro

@Almo vi?!?!?! not vim?

1:15 AM
probably

Vi/Vim

this was the 90s

oh okay that makes sense

:)

I don't know how to save a file without using the Save option on the window
Considering I am using graphical Vim

But am being legit about my question, anyone know/use COBOL?

to save a file in vim, do this (without quotes) ":w(return)"
or, to save and exit, in command mode, "ZZ"

I don't know how to make a new file and save it is what I'm saying
:sav doesn't work for me because I can't figure out how to add the filename
:sav filename.txt

:w saves the current buffer

Doesn't work.
:sav "filename.txt"
doesn't work.

1:17 AM
I do "vi filename.txt" at the prompt to make a new file
then :w works

:pwd and then trying to :cd into my current directory don't work

I don't do any directory stuff from vi
I go to the directory I want, do vi filename.txt at the prompt

Okay, fair enough

there are ways to do that
I just don't know them :)
in command mode:

Alright, I'll stick with command prompt then for moving files around
Vim for strictly editing
Any other tips for a newbie?

1:19 AM
x - delete char under cursor
$ - to end of line
o - edit line after cursor
O - edit line under cursor
cw - change word under cursor
w - advance one word

Okay, real quick: I know you're supposed to be in normal mode to move around a lot, but I keep going into insert mode and just floating around with the keypad.
That's bad, right?

yy - yank current line to buffer
p - paste line to cursor
@hasherr it's slower

Yeah.

can't do stuff like w to move a word

I guess I just need practice.

1:21 AM
but it's fine while you're learning

I'm also trying to use my mouse less.

dd - delete current line
but vim commands take numbers
so y4y yanks 4 lines to buffer d4d deletes 4 lines
G is "to end of file"
so dG is delete to end of file
you start doing these things, and you'll start finding normal text editors annoying

sigh
This'll take me a year.

nah
keep that open, use vi however you want, and periodically look over the site for things that might help you. learn it bit by bit

If the site would load...
lol 'lagmonster'

1:23 AM
like I just learned that { } are paragraph forward and paragraph back
:q is quit
so if you vi filename and don't want to save it, hit :q

That site doesn't even load for me.

:(
will find another just a sec
ok dinner time talk later :)

Thanks for the help

Joe
awwyeajumpattack

1:35 AM
Awwww yah
Looks sharp dude

Joe
thanks its getting there

So are my vim skills. ha

Joe
lol thats one of those things on my list
one day

Pip
@hasherr escape, then :wq
to write and quit
:D

Lol.

Pip
1:44 AM
@Joe :D
@hasherr I've used vim a bit, prefer nano but vim is good too

Yeah, it's pretty difficult to learn.

Pip
Yep
Did you see what I got done today?
4 hours ago, by Pip
DONE:
MAKE PATHFINDING FUCKING WORK
Make sure pathfinding works around obstacles
	- Create new mountain sprite
	- Make new map with mountian ranges
Complete reset of nodes during new path creation

TODO:
Display caravan sprites
Move caravans along routes
Display towns
	- Create new town sprite
	- Create new object
Town interactions?

Goddamiit, Sieve of Eratosthenes is difficult when you're on your own.

heheh
I wrote one of those recently
@SpartanDonut you playin lol?

1:54 AM
need help?
@IcyDefiance we waiting for todders?

oh, hey, you're in league, lol

yeah :D
todders is close to done with a game

I wasn't paying attention. What is he doing that we have to wait for?
oh okay
sure I'll wait

@IcyDefiance ok he's out
@IcyDefiance come on man

I was busy gosh darn it!

2:03 AM
Yo, what's with the flag?

Pip
2:20 AM
@hasherr yes

:(

@hasherr what language?

Perl.

Cool
good luck with that

Pip
lol why Perl?

2:23 AM
Perl is a good server language

@Pip Learning it.

Pip
cool
for any particular language, or just because?

2:40 AM
@SpartanDonut you there?

@Pip Just cause. People like Perl. I need to learn a new language.

Pip
Cool

learn AWK
much more fun

Pip
What's your list atm?

>:)

Pip
2:45 AM
@Almo sh, you! :D

3:20 AM
@Lokkij That sounds like a lot of fun, but I don't think I know enough to help with it.

6 hours later…
user92578
9:36 AM
Someone had left "taking the hobbits to eisengard" 10h edition running on one of the school lobby computers :D

user92578
Sums up fridays quite well :D

nice

1 hour later…
10:42 AM
@John There's still some time to prepare! We're planning on using Python + libtcod; it's not that hard. Being able to code in Python is enough. :)

Pip
11:09 AM
Python <3
Still in love with that language, even after starting to use C# almost exclusively for projects

Jon

Coding in Python is very fun.
It also helps that PyCharm is a really solid IDE.

Pip
:D

People in my twitter feed are saying things like "I see white/gold". What the hell are they talking about?

Jon
i dun goofed
HEH, today's XKCD makes wayyyy more sense now @Lokkij

Jon
12:19 PM
WS Response is successful, everything is good.. but I return a False in my IsSuccess property...
stupid bugs.

user92578
12:58 PM
good day!

user92578
1:11 PM
Today's goal: cage & prisoner system working

Jon
weird
open firefox
chrome://browser/content/browser.xul#
Paste this in it... what is it?

user92578
wow, really weird

user92578
it's like a layout thingy, as most of the features are gone

Jon
Yeah, and it loads differently on my 2 pcs
one of them has a File Menu
the other doesn't... errr... different version of firefox, n/m

user92578

user92578
1:17 PM
this is what I get

Jon
you are using developer
man.. i got annoyed with firefox developer edition

user92578
yup

user92578
why?

Jon
way slower load time -- and everytime I launch it it installs a new version
like, literally every single day

user92578
that is annoying

Jon
1:18 PM
And adblockplus doesn't work on my install
it apparently works for others.. but I haven't been able to get it to work on my pc

user92578
and it's not even like "wait I wont start yet as I need to update", it's just "oh I started, but Im outdated! restart me!"

Jon
says it is installed, and everything is fine.. but ads still show

user92578
there are bad sides but the theme is cool

Jon
I love the theme
I can't stand ads
Popup ads are the worst
Anyone here play Trivia Crack?

user92578
yeah, adblock is one of those things that you don't value enough in your everyday life but once it's gone you really miss it

Jon
1:23 PM
Trivia Crack on android -- ads can be cancelled out , great
on IOs... oh man
full screen video ads, that can't be exited... you have to close the application entirely

1:44 PM
I'm using skippable interstitial image ads for my game
will put in unskippable video ads later, but on a voluntary basis. do it if you want for extra contest entries is the thought

Jon
2:01 PM
I was thinking... anyone here ever play turf wars on minecraft?
That game is fun as balls... I was thinking of making a game based on it

@Almo I'm such a good support adc depresses me lol
had some amazing support games last night when I didn't get adc

2:24 PM
hello

Joe
@SpartanDonut @Almo either of you tried Vain Glory vainglorygame.com

No sir

Joe
its... weird having your fingers in front of the screen
I was surprised at the quality for a mobile app

2:44 PM
@SpartanDonut :D It might help if you learned ADC with an easier one, but I don't mind who you play.
Draven's just tricky to play well. :)

Draven isn't so hard. I just have this horrible tendency to zone out during team fights xD

hehehe
When I tell my veteran friends I have a pal learning adc with draven they say "oooh that's tough"
but if you LIKE playing him, that's really what matters.

Yeah I've been playing him and Graves the most
Might try Jinx sometime soon
But I do like Draven. Hits like a truck

graves was one of the recommendations
Jinx is fun
I like the range switch

Urgh what race should I play? Choices include (but are not limited to): deep dwarf, centaur, demonspawn, naga, deep/high elf.

2:51 PM
human

Joe
theres a four legged race there and you are asking this question

Boooring

but human first time around means you don't get crippled by some weird racial oddity
second time, go weird

@Joe There's also an eight legged race (octopode) but I refuse to play them.
@Almo I'm pretty experienced already and the game has permadeath (it's DCSS)
So that's not a factor
Fuck it, I'm a deep dwarf.

no!
elf!

2:55 PM
Too late! I am now a deep dwarf necromancer.
The 26 races and 26 classes in this game can occasionally overwhelm me a bit.
Deep dwarves are cool. I'm resistant to damage and can recharge magical devices with mana, but I don't heal naturally.

almo: fighting level 11
braveplatypus: hello
almo: hi!
braveplatypus: should it be bigger??
almo: hahah no idea
almo: never played

Haha what?

chatting with someone else who's playing

Ah
You could also spectate me, but I'm only a few levels in so that's pretty boring.

Joe
actually pretty slick

3:07 PM
you died man

Yeah D:
Sigmund is a real newbie killer

Jon
whatcha playing;/
oh i see now
that is fucken cool
how u create acc?

By the way, if anyone actually wants to play the game, the offline version has a tutorial and mouse support

Pip
what the fuck is this?
It looks cool

A nice roguelike
I've been playing it for ages

Pip
3:19 PM
cool

looks like multiple roguelikes

Hmm?

dcss-git
dcss-git 0.15

Different versions
It's constantly updated

zot defense?

3:22 PM
It's a silly towerdefense-like gamemode
Sprint is premade (extra difficult) levels

Fixed it and now it works with multiple types.

Pip
oh man, looks awesome

It's a bit silly though. :P For some reason some of the "dirt" I add is turned to sand. :P

Jon
well show us a gif for dang sakes

Joe
@William'MindWorX'Mariager I was thinking about this yesterday... those slow falling tall pillars
you could try and do some spread diameter increase based on the amount of unsettled sand above

3:26 PM
Well, that's the hard part about this. It has to work on GPU. :P It's pretty difficulty to make everything work.
user image
2

Joe
ahh yea I have no idea what that entails

Jon
that is awesome

The hardest part is you don't know the result of the cells nearby.

"These are activities that have low risk, take a lot of time, and
bring some reward. This is bad for a game's design because it encourages
players to bore themselves. Even worse, it may be optimal to do so. We try
to avoid this! "
I really dislike it when I find this in games.
like harvesting red orbs in Devil May Cry

@Joe Right now I analyze in 2x2. A pass in even coords and a pass in odd coords.

3:30 PM
What the hell is wrong with this level. Encountered hordes of zombies, a hill giant and a shadow (way too strong for me) and some pretty tough orcs.

those guys have some really solid understanding of good game design
I may play this

@Almo It takes a while to get into it (and I'm happy to assist you if you want to) but when you're finally able to defeat adders it's so much fun.
It's challenging as hell though.

how do you exit a game you started?

Ctrl-Q

3:33 PM
I'm in one, but wanted to get back to the main page with the list of people playing

I think
Ohh
Erm
The back button in your browser :P

heheh

Joe
@Almo wheres this quote from?

Also I'm pretty sure someone set up that level specifically to torture me. Holy shit that was full of nasty mosnters.

it's from the "philosophy" section of the help in the game Lokkij is playing

Joe
3:35 PM
this is "Stone Soup"?

yes

Joe
ill add it tomy list

Also the wiki can be a tremendous help.

but one of their design goals is no need to resort to such references
I'll try it cold a few times

Sure. Just make sure to do the tutorial or hints mode. :)
Else you're going to miss a lot.

Joe
3:51 PM
ooo I grabbed an android git client and a sale on a crummy blue tooth handheld "keyboard controller" will be trying some on train mobile phone coding next week

By the way @Joe here's that philosophy section where that quote's from.

Joe
cool yea Almo showed me :D
