6:00 PM
@AttackingHobo I did not say I would keep lost stuff.
I am talking about the criminals who are doing it. I also completed my discussion anyone want to see in the pastebin?

6 mins ago, by PsychO PhobiA
Who wants to give it back at all?
@PsychOPhobiA why not

@AttackingHobo Yeah but thats a question not a statement
@AttackingHobo "Why not"?

why not give it back

its a rhetorical question. Which is nearly the same thing as making a statement

Someone call them both: "Hey, can you beat $52. Ok cool, I'll call you back in just a moment."
It's like the bargain hunting of donations

6:02 PM
Anyone want to see my disscussion or not

what kind of discussion?

The Christopher Columbus discussion

aint nobody got time fo' no history channel
unless it's ancient aliens

for school?

Ah come on guys its the truth
Please????

6:04 PM
Ancient Aliens is awesome

Ancient aliens FTW

@PsychOPhobiA I already said "why not?" link it man

@PsychOPhobiA try spicing it up with some ancient aliens

@PsychOPhobiA just post it - someone will have a look. If you ask first, nobody will volunteer

I will post on pastebin hold on
Okay there you guys go. Click the link above

6:06 PM

@MickLH you were right, our advice to psycho backfired

You guys read it?

@PsychOPhobiA yes

How is it?

A: Are questions asking how to find where game engines have the code for different things on-topic?

SpartanDonutAbsolutely not. I don't think it matters what the content or circumstances around the question are. I cannot think of an example of a question along the lines of "Where is the code for X?" isn't an XY problem. The following example scenario was provided as a counter argument to this: "I may k...

6:09 PM
nearly unsalvageable

If you voted for Josh's answer please read the comments on his answer and read my answer and vote accordingly.

@AttackingHobo What you mean?

It is bad, and will be hard to fix.

I also excluded that he explored the Americas in which I fixed up.
Hard to fix and how is it bad?
That is what the teacher wanted to know.

What is your writing prompt?

6:11 PM
????

@PsychOPhobiA how old are you? That's important because I don't know what standard to expect

I am 13
All of my class mates are 12 and 13
in 8th grade now

it's fine

ok that changes things a bit

I feel like I've read this essay a million times

6:13 PM
@SpartanDonut first vote!

YEAH! HIGH FIVE!!

When you quote things, make sure you cite them.

It is just crazy when it seems people don't read their history
Oh
okay I will fix that up but can I go eat first?

lol
kid what the fuck

Also you don't have to begin a quote with "I will quote"

6:14 PM
we're not your parents

of course, eat! you can't do history when you starved

Oh well ima go eat and thanks guys!

Because he asked, I kind of want to say. No, finish the essay first.
lol

you can go skydiving for all we care lol

Just for fun, lets also run it through hemmingway

6:15 PM
@Noctrine hmm?

man this reminded me of this ultra-studious colleague of mine
asking the prof something like
"prof is there a problem if I also write..."
then he got interrupted by someone else saying
"write whatever you want dude, nobody cares"
lol

Oooo, he writes at a 9th grade level (according to this app)

it's the single most honest response I've heard

@Noctrine wait really? that's a 9th grade level?

6:17 PM
Had a similar situation, but it was about essay length. The professor ultimately said if we could explain the particular economic theory in a paragraph we were more than welcome.

perhaps I should try to find one of my essays from when I was that age, see what it looked like
I might be holding unreasonable standards here

it looks more like 6th grade to me but that's common for 8th graders nowadays
at least here

@PsychOPhobiA remove or fix. " I will quote " "Also " "If anyone has they are wrong and they need to understand the truth in history not false history." "Here is an link to very good source,"

@IcyDefiance You probably are.

communist elementary books made use of and implicitly kids had a richer vocabulary than today's high schoolers
it was mostly propaganda
but it was written in a clean and rich Romanian

6:19 PM
I just read a lot of fiction books and got my vocabulary from that. then I lost my vocabulary when I discovered the internet. now I just swear at people and tell them they're wrong all the time. :D

@Noctrine thanks for the reference to the hemmingway app, this is a lot easier

Video games helped me destroy some friends in Taboo.

Pip
@AlexM. nope, looks like sixth grade to me
being a high-schooler myself

@PsychOPhobiA The sentence - "The reason that none of the history text books never explained how Christopher Columbus exploration lead to the Americas was because no one could really explain it and that it just sounded very confusing." is terrible.

@Noctrine hold up, that grade level is "the lowest education level needed to understand your text"
it's not the level of the writing itself

6:22 PM
@Noctrine that sentence itself is confusing

Its very easy to inflate that number though
Longer words, and longer sentences usually do it

Trying to help Psycho is noble and I absolutely support it, but stepping back and seeing the gamedev chat help with an essay for a history class seems weird...

I really love this tool already

@AttackingHobo just mash the keyboard for a few lines.

I always type things to people, and worry if I'm going above their reading level

6:24 PM
@Christoph we're bored and this is mildly interesting. it's not that weird.

@Almo I'm pretty sure
it's wrong

Christoph makes a good point. Pscyho, I want a followup essay explaining why this is relevant to GameDev on my desk tomorrow.

@Christoph game dev is a very wide field. For a lot of us, nearly everything is interesting to some point

grammatically

Found a few good resources today
- http://www.game-icons.net/ - Lots of simplistic icons for buff/buttons/interface.
- http://www.xnview.com/en/xnconvert/ - Completely free imageformat converter, which i used to convert .dds to .png.
8

6:25 PM
@IcyDefiance yes, I absolutely understand that. I'm also procrastinating

@William'MindWorX'Mariager star'd
Ok people gotta do some major brain work. Be back later

@AttackingHobo true, a good game usually has a good story, and they usually have a made-up in-game "history".

@William'MindWorX'Mariager dang it, I wish I had that second one before. when I wanted to convert png to dds I made my own GUI for a command line program just to allow me to run batches with it. -.-

I wonder, what the Americas would have been called if Columbus wasn't so thick.

@IcyDefiance Hehe
It's rare to find an image converter that's actually free without any catches.
It actually also performs other batch operations. Like resize/crop/frame/add text/etc.

6:28 PM
@Noctrine Land
I'd call any land Land
with an index attached to it

United States of Land[4]?

Sounds awfully inconvenient :P

Cluster of Land[4]
contributing to the entire distributed system called World

@AlexM. I thought the exact same thing, lol

I think it should rather be universe->galaxy->system->planet->chunk so universe[0][0][0][4]

6:34 PM
Does Land refer to a continent or a country?

I'd say continent
a country is a cluster

So what happens when their are multiple clusters in Land?

well we keep track of multiple clusters
obviously :A
man imagine how awesome that would be

spatial partitioning.

each cluster would have specific advantages in executing commands due do the climate and resources
and jobs would be sent appropriately by one central entity
and technically all countries would act in the interest of the whole world

6:36 PM
@JoshPetrie thanks. That's why we voted you into office ;)

we could achieve that with androids

Pip
if anyone wants to try out the first build of Envio, you can check it out here. There is not a ton to do yet, but it is progress.

or half-androids
I doubt Bob who's sitting on his couch drinking beer and watching rugby would agree to something like that

If you re-organize properly, Bob wouldn't even know.

Let's develop a new world order on hackaday

6:38 PM
@Noctrine hmm

@AlexM. This created a weird mental image for me.
I could picture Bob right up until Rugby.

but if we eliminated bob
we'd reduce the maintenance costs of the cluster containing him
robots are cheaper
this could be all for a good reason in some situations
say, we'd have to leave the planet in an emergency and all resources need to be invested in automatized research
we'd keep a specific # of humans ready to colonize another planet alive
and kill the others to not waste resources
it's ugly when you think of it
but fast forward in that future
and they'd be dying for a good cause

@AlexM. the idea of eliminating bob just inspired me to cut a pair of huge cardboard braces so that I can move things out of scope in real life

@Pip let me know if you get it running on monogame

Pip
that is Monogame :)

6:43 PM
mono choked while loading the XNA stuff for me

Gonomame!

I wonder what I broke lol

Pip
@MickLH hm.... get an error message? Idk what broke
works fine for me and Wardy

Pip
wut
time to do some googling

6:45 PM
sorry for the trouble dude, I'd guess it's related to some difference between Mono and .NET
if you're on windows you're most likely using .NET to run it, while i'm using Mono on linux

Monogame uses the Microsoft.Xna.Framework namespace, even though it's Monogame
they're a little strange that way

Yeah I thought they were kinda compatible

> TypeLoadException is thrown when the common language runtime cannot find the assembly, the type within the assembly, or cannot load the type.

Pip
they are kinda compatible, yet
that means XNA => Monogame, but not Monogame => XNA, usually

do I need to install XNA to play it?

Pip
6:48 PM
it is definately a .NET vs Mono thing

I noticed in the bin folder is a "Windows" folder - can you not target Linux for your build?

@SpartanDonut the EXE should be fine, Mono uses that as the code format on all platforms

Pip
I probably can, but I have no idea how

any other info with that exception?

6:50 PM
@MickLH I was curious if maybe building for Windows had different dependencies than Linux or something. I have no clue how it all works honestly :)

Pip
wait a sec

I meant, on the console where that exception got printed

that was on the console
it never got out of the console, crashed with that backtrace

Pip
That was a debug release... let me try a full release

right, but no other info on which assembly or which type etc?

6:51 PM
I really pasted everything, I even ran mono with --debug

Pip
aah, I can make a Linux release now
hold on Mick :)

Boom.

cool thanks

try running mono with: MONO_LOG_LEVEL=debug MONO_LOG_MASK=asm

Chaz Michael Michaels IS FIGURE SKATING

6:52 PM
Pip, ah

Mono: Failed to load assembly MonoGame.Framework[0xd3f3b0]

also no offense @Pip, /media/hdd/Junk is just where I extract archives to

Pip
lol
doesn't matter :)

@MickLH honestly I might have to adopt this convention... I dump too much stuff on the desktop and then have to sift through it later
If I know its something not important I could put it in a junk folder for later deletion

MLM
6:54 PM
Just do it in Downloads

that's exactly how I came to it ;)

Pip
I have a folder called 'Go Through" :)

@MLM Anything into downloads = gone forever*

@MLM Sometimes there are large reusable downloads I want to keep

MLM
Downloads is a garbage for me. Not on Windows?

6:55 PM
*forever may be a finite amount of time, terms and conditions apply

MLM
I decide when to delete

Maybe I should download things I might keep to other locations. Maybe that's my problem xD
That would probably be easier... then I don't have to change any browser defaults

@MLM no I mean that my downloads folder is too huge, it's a non-trivial task to find anything in it

I always leave things in downloads until I go to clean it out and realize I really don't want to delete something, then I move it somewhere else

even using tools, the only way to navigate my DL folder efficiently is on command line, knowing the name already

MLM
6:56 PM
Ahh, I clean it out once in a while. But Show in Folder in chrome helps

I just never clean out my DL folder

it tries to find the dll here /media/hdd/Junk/Envio (Build 1.0.0.0)/Windows/Release/MonoGame.Framework.dll

Joe
my garbage 2001 flip phone died... i got an old phone from a friend as a replacement

@MLM Yeah. If there is something I might reuse I should "show in folder->move somewhere else" right away. This is probably the better approach

Joe
and verizon wont swap me over, saying that my "new" old phone is stolen... such a bullshit ploy to get me to spend money

6:57 PM
@radical that DLL exists, maybe I'll try a path with no spaces

from the IGDA report "One Hispanic respondent reported submitting two resumes for the same job, one with the real, Hispanic sounding name and one with an Americanized name; recruiters selected the Americanized name, even though the resumes were otherwise identical."

@MickLH my parents don't either and now it takes 20 seconds just to load and display everything when they open the folder ._.
it's horrifying

haha
I'll top it

so close to 10k rep
better work on it

MLM
@SpartanDonut Exactly. Extract archive.zip to archive/
copy where it should be

6:57 PM
I started with a 500GB drive, filled it up
I went to go clean, but instead I said screw that and bought a 1TB drive
filled it up
I went to go clean, but instead I said screw that and bought a 3TB drive
now I'm about halfway there

MLM
I have a 750gb which is almost full. 80gb free on C:/ and 100 on D:/

@Almo As bad as it sounds I don't know if that's a fair experiment

I'm hoping next drive is 12TB
that way the one after it can be 60TB

Windows: http://windirstat.info/index.html
Linux: http://kdirstat.sourceforge.net/
so nice to have

MLM
I would be screwed without my NAS though

6:59 PM
I am back
What happended while I was gone
?

Joe
@IcyDefiance i use one for mac as well.. let me find the name

@PsychOPhobiA So much. Read the log

Joe
derlien.com Disk inventory X

Perhaps telling me how would be great!

I still haven't made the jump for a NAS...
