TBH, the other answer you wrote I didn't really look at, because it was much after the time I asked the question, and I'd have to go load all that stuff back into my brain. That's one reason I don't like asking questions much. You feel a responsibility to look at all the answers, even if they come years later.

I did upvote it, though.

Also, I really hate those Biology databases. I only look at the things if I have to. No offense intended to the people who work on them.

@WYSIWYG I was working on a specific paper. I got it rejected twice, the second time with useful comments (from a Bayesian statistics journal). I did some work revising it, but I haven't resubmitted it yet. Other things got in the way, unfortunately.

I think all those questions are related to that paper.

Anyway, it took >9 months to get the damn thing published so I'm a happy camper.

So, how many co-authors did you have on that one?

@FaheemMitha On this one, 4 not including the PI. I did 98% of the work though. The others all contributed, they should be authors, but far, far less so. This is my baby.

@terdon I see. 98% is a lot. I've noticed if people are not first authors, they usually don't want to do anything. Which is not ideal.

Well, people I've dealt with.

They did nothing for the actual paper but some of the work I did was based on stuff they did so they were included. And correctly so.

I mean about writing.

@terdon Oh, you mean you did 98% of the writing? What about the coding? That is a major major time sink. Probably upwards of 80% of the time I spend.

@FaheemMitha I used one script written by one of the coauthors, and two of the others made a database out of the results I generated. Everything else is mine.

The actual code-writing is a fast job for me but to think about the entire flow is time taking. But much more than that is experimental stuff and waiting for your orders to arrive :P
