@Chris I thought of that too; that is a valid close reason. Had it been closed for that reason, I would not have brought it up. My feeling is that if I take a chance on answering a close-worthy question, and it gets closed, that's just the way the cookie crumbles. I might try adding research to the question if I cared. But opinion based? I just don't see it.
Sometimes, when one person votes to close, people then close, clicking the same reason. That makes closings confusing and contradictory.
If a question is close worthy (and this one was, for lack of showing work), we should close. I have no problem with that, none at all. But it should be based on the right reason, applied consistently.
Otherwise meta gets clogged with "Why was my question closed" type-posts.
@WYSIWYG - I am now! :-)

2 hours later…
4:35 AM
@CRags - yes?

@anongoodnurse are you here?

Yes - see above.

I have not done any extrapolation like that
How do you do that?

You don't extrapolate much, this is true.
Why are we constantly at odds?
You post meaningless challenges on many of my posts.

Ok, that is what I meant when I said we need some correction atleast. However it is true that I do not have much experience in this as I have done no personal research at anything
Well lol

4:37 AM
Yes?...

It is just that your views seem drastically different from mine

I can't help that.

I want to correct my views if what you say is correct

You don't believe in correctness, as far as I can see.

So I am trying to understand how you arrive at your conclusion
It's not that I am trying to disprove you. That is never my intension

4:38 AM
This started when you challenged my answer about cardiac output with comments about wikipedia.

Yes, I know
I always used to think wiki was a good source

And comments like "lol! You're wrong!"

Granted that there are errors

That doesn't earn anyone any respect.

Did I tell something like that?
I am sorry. I do not as a rule confront people like that

4:39 AM
yes, you did. I flagged those comments.

I will ask them further questions to understand their views unless it is plainly wrong
I apologize again. I will be more careful from now on

Thank you. I appreciate that. But you seem bent on disagreeing with everything I posit.

I think this got aggravated with the post about cancer. You took a practical approach while I wanted a theoritical (absolute) approach

I will believe you, I guess, when I stop seeing it.

I will try to be more open minded

4:41 AM
Also @CRags I would like to ask why do you consider it invalid to use abnormal human experiments as evidence.

True. You asked what doctors consider a cure, and I told you, then you refused to see any validity in the answer.

But please take my questions as something that will help me understand your view rather than challenging your view

As I said, you don't seem to want to be enlightened.
See @MarchHo's question. It's significant.
(Saying "HaHa. Wikipedia is right" doesn't support your claim that you want to understand me or my views.)

Maybe I will try to be more clear. I would also from now on be more open minded.
@MarchHo I don't see how you can extrapolate data from an abnormal person to a normal person without making some corrections

Then I will work with you. Maybe start by answering @MarchHo. Then we can work through the science.

4:46 AM
That is what I meant

What kind of corrections do you think are necessary in this case then?

He was 99.999999999% normal. Do you not see that?

Normally one would use a control, but clearly they aren't available in this case.

Thanks. As a matter of fact I have upvote many of the your posts @anongoodnurse
@MarchHo that is what I mean, you don't have enough data. I am a student so I don't know much about extrapolating

As I have yours. But the question remains. If someone is more like than different, does that not matter?

4:48 AM
Hi pal :-)

@infinitesimal Hi, inf.!
:-)

How are you?

Oh, so-so to good.

The immune system was deficient so you don't know how having an active immune system can affect the person. @MarchHo

Interesting new name @anongoodnurse?

4:50 AM
okay, if we accept this arguendo, how do you propose to correct for this then?

"I don't know how to extrapolate" and "there seems to be deficient data" is why I said that.

@CRags - if something is 99.999999999% normal, we can make some assumptions.

I don't know
Ok
I don't know to @MarchHo
Ok to @anongoodnurse

@infinitesimal I like it! a "non-good nurse, or a non good-nurse?
2

Anonymous good nurse? @anongoodnurse

4:51 AM
That is what I thought too@infinitesimal

@infinitesimal another! see, the name is full of possibilities!

I actually thought of @infinitesimal 's interpretation at first

Actually, it's Juliette's comment to her nurse when Romeo is pestering her.
Yes, it was purposely vague.

I like ambiguity being an infinitesimal ;-)

People don't like doctors, but they do seem fine with nurses.
@infinitesimal lolol

4:54 AM
Anyway guys I have work, have to write records. Will take 8 to 9 hours in the hospital. See you. And sorry again if I seemed arrogant @anongoodnurse. I will be courteous in the future. Maybe we can talk in the chat if I have any questions, if I find you around!
Bye

Later

@CRags OK, that seems good. Have a good day!

Same to you madam

:-)
@MarchHo - I don't understand many things. Human nature is one of those things I am constantly surprised by.

I gotta run too cya @anongoodnurse

4:56 AM
Cya, skull!

2 hours later…
7:09 AM
It is a rainy sunday afternoon for me.. Anyone around ?

@anongoodnurse I think we still work on being consistent with that. The problem is that we haven't found our red line here and there is a number of people voting which have different opinions. Nothing bad, but makes this more difficult.

@Chris what is the context here
Regarding closures ?

yup

It is difficult to set a line.
There are some questions which I know should be closed. It is not possible to answer such vague questions but they did not get sufficient close votes
Whereas there are some closures which may be unjust (too big a word for it).
But I think if the OP is really interested to find an answer then they'll work on it.
My question is why should others make an effort when you yourself have not done it. This is wrt homework.

But with diverse fields of biology people have different ways of thinking and that may cause difference of opinions. However I think we raise arguments in meta and sort things out. This forum is going healthy
@Chris Do you think we have a serious problem here?
I was discussing with anongoodnurse yesterday about why this site needs a "homework close" option

I see this problem as well. And I really don't have a problem with closing inapropriate questions.

because in stackoverflow, to even ask a question one has to know something about programming. Even then sometimes they are harsh. For example I made a typo in a fortran script and was breaking my head over the compiler error. I thought there is something wrong with how I have written the code (I am new to fortran). Seems it was just a typo. I get 2 downvotes and since there is an upvoted answer I cant even delete the post. I just have to live with it :P

8:54 AM
I know the same problem from tex.sx. They are very fast in closing stuff.

Back to the topic. But to ask a question related to biology just pratically anyone can do it.

And I don't think we have a real problem. We could only be more consistant.

We should be harsh to these kind of people.
Those who think of a question related to life while idly sipping their beer and thump it on others.
↑ that was a little dramatic, but you understand what I mean right?

9:07 AM
yes, I do.
I also wonder about the people who are not able to do at least a short search about it.

9:24 AM
It is easier to search than to type a question

you should think so, yes.

I think we should take a stand on this. If we all agree to it then such questions are to be closed without any delay or explanation.
@Chris What are you upto.. Lazy sunday morning?
Not going out for a photography trip?
should this question be closed.
There is no evidence for what is claimed

10:08 AM
Yup, slow going sunday.
It should. And I voted already.

5 hours later…
3:02 PM
@WYSIWYG What is wrong with this answer biology.stackexchange.com/questions/29878/…
oh wait, yes, i misread the question, OP was asking for mRNA array and poster thought it was a red-green array

3:22 PM
@MarchHo moreover t-test is used for intersample testing. OP is interested in finding the genes that have greatest variance. t-test is not used for this purpose
