@terdon I remember perl was "THE OFFICIAL PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE" of bioinformaticians
However python is more versatile and developed quite a lot.

Having said that, I use awk for most of the bioinformatics analysis (which most of the times for me happens to be text parsing)
@GriffinEvo If you are simulating mathematical models then I also recommend FORTRAN
And stackoverflow is better than any textbook for learning programming. It wont take you more than a month to operate a new language decently.

@WYSIWYG I won't be lured into a discussion of perl vs python but suffice it to say I don't buy the "more versatile" one bit :). I use a mix of perl/awk/bash. I've never been sold on python but I know I should take the time and learn it at some point.
