I have finally got my silver

@natural If you didn't get a message from a moderator, you can't have been suspended. If it was right after you first started, it might just have been that you made a bad post and got enough downvotes to put you down to 1 rep. But anyway, never mind - bygones and all that.
@DForck42 Hey, are you not coming to Literature any more? :-(

@Randal'Thor I think that he was kidding ;)
What's with the miscellaneous chat room?

@Napoleon Are we allowing cross-posts by the same user now? I raised a flag the other day on a question which had been cross-posted (downvoted and closed here, upvoted and answered on SFF), but you declined it.
(And yes, I can tell who handled the flag when the decline text is "Um, acknowledged? ;-)") :-)

@Randal'Thor That's it! I'm raising a meta rant about you disclosing this information :P

in Miscellaneous, 2 hours ago, by natural
Just a chatroom that I have decided to pop up if anyone wanted to talk on here for any reason, maybe to get away from the other people. Basically a stand-by chatroom

12:50 AM
I think that this room covers pretty much all "miscellaneous" ;)
But...okay :)

@user22792 I'm not a mod here, so there's nothing I can't reveal :-)
> maybe to get away from the other people
Maybe there's someone natural doesn't like in here?
shrug

@Randal'Thor Are you talking about the one that Richard wanted migrated the other day?
@Randal'Thor Awwwwww. I hope not :(

@user22792 I dunno what Richard wanted. I'm talking about a question which was cross-posted (by the same OP) both here and on SFF.
For goodness's sake don't bring Richard into it, or else anything any SFF user says will be wrong! ;-)

Oh, sorry. Hehehehe!

@AJ Worldbuilding is based on the most awesome concept of any SE site I've come across. It's basically a whole site about constructing fantasy worlds or fantastical scenarios. Over there you can get well-reasoned and sensible answers to questions like "how do centaurs breast-feed?" and "what would be the effect on the human body of increasing gravitational force?" and "how would society change if people could read each other's minds?" It's a completely wacky and brilliant site.

12:57 AM
hey

@Randal'Thor Is that the site with those riddle type things that you post in here sometimes?

@user22792 Riddles aren't questions about constructing fantasy worlds or fantastical scenarios.
You must be thinking of Puzzling.
Which is another awesome site that's deviated even more from the SE norm.

@Randal'Thor Riddles can be a pain in the backside.

@Randal'Thor Hahahahahahaha. yeah I reckon XD
I've finally got my first silver badge

Congrats :-)
Which one?

Thank-You :D
its the 300 voting one
now im going for the 600 gold badge
600 votes

Ah. Those are fairly easy to get for silver/gold badges.

yeah

As are Enthusiast and Fanatic, sometimes known as the "at least you turned up" badges.

thats why i went for it ;)
How do I do the UTC one?

1:08 AM
UTC one?

The silver 'visit the site for 30 consecutive days (counted in UTC)

UTC = Universal Coordinated Time, the official time zone used by SE.
I.e. British time, give or take daylight savings.
Literally all you have to do for that badge is show up on the site.
Every day.
For 30 days running.

im AUstralia, so thats gonna be hard

Why? All you have to do is subtract 10 hours.

ok...

Q: Short film about woman on subway who flirts but never talks

Tenzin GyurmedA long time ago I remember watching this short film about a woman who goes up to a man on a subway and flirts with him non-verbally, every single day, until one day he decides to break the ice and talk to her. At that point she walks away and he never sees her again. What movie is this?

@MovieReel An upvote?

@Randal'Thor Um, wasn't that question closed here anyway? I'm not sure what you expect me to do there.

A J
@Randal'Thor I've visited the site for 192 days.

@NapoleonWilson Yes (although it does have a reopen vote). But I thought the policy was that if someone cross-posts a question, one of its incarnations should be deleted?

@Randal'Thor Ah, I see.

@AJ Nice job! It's hard not to miss a single day in so long.

Tenzin GyurmedThis film was made in either 2000 or 2001, and the main character is a guy who is a drifter. I don't really use to downvote competing answers, but I have absolutely not the thinnest idea what Panther is even trying to say there.

Me neither.

Wait, on thinking a little more about this, it seems he's talking about the very first scene, where Cooper awakes from a nightmare and Murph says she thought he was the ghost. But this doesn't really have anything to do with the question, as that was back when they didn't even know what to make of the anomaly at all, let alone that is an anomaly.

@NapoleonWilson Isn't that earlier than usual?

@Randal'Thor Meh, depends on what you call fun.

@NapoleonWilson lol

But to their defense, the community seems really awesome and engaged in general, as also judging by probably having the most active blog after (or before?) SciFi.
I also think the people who really intended this as about actually building worlds aren't all completely happy about the whatiffiness of many of the questions. But well, it's not like all the questions on the sites we love are totally awesome. That's a sentiment I can understand. ;-)

@NapoleonWilson Yeah, they have a huge amount of engagement with the blog, including not only essays on worldbuildingy stuff but interviews with top users and an extremely detailed rundown of the first election.

some film critic

@AJ Stuff like "What if all the world's concrete was suddenly turned into jelly?". As opposed to a question about, well, building a world.

11:45 AM
@AnkitSharma What "main material"? Worldbuilding isn't about already-existing works of fiction; you might be getting mixed up with certain other SE sites there.

A J
Question from Nolan's movie, that Napoleon answered, is in HNQ.

@NapoleonWilson With excellent answers, long and detailed and based on scientific facts, to prove exactly what would happen if all the world's concrete suddenly turned into jelly.
How is that not awesome?

@Randal'Thor Y...yeah.
@Randal'Thor As said, however you define "awesome".

most questions on worldbuilding looks like questions that would be closed as off-topic or too-broad in the other SE sites tbh
but that's just my opinion

@AJ Oh my, really?

A J
11:47 AM
@NapoleonWilson Yep.
Anyway, seems like silver is way too far.

Yes, I'm glad we even got enough questions to finally get tag badges.

A J
When would we start to get Generalist badge?

That being said, it seems I only need 4 upvotes for the score threshold...and then answer another 45 questions. ;-(

@BalarkaSen Yes, it's one of those sites that departs somewhat from the SE norm in its question style. Though not as much so as others ...
@AJ When the top 40 tags all have at least 200 questions.

@AJ That's still a long time away.
Practically, we'd need more all-encompassing franchise tags. With indiovidual films it seems hard to achieve.

11:51 AM
@Randal'Thor Stylistically, sure. But what I'm saying is "what if you drilled a worm hole through spacetime" sounds like a closed as off-topic ridiculous physics.SE question eg :)

There's only 2 non-franchise and non-generic tags that have 200 questions, and they're both humungous TV-shows with tons of stuff to ask about.

I really think all of this is better suited on Randall Munroe's joke site What If xkcd

@BalarkaSen If "worm hole" (and "drilled", and "through", and "spacetime") are rigorously enough defined so that the question can be sensibly answered, then that might well fit on Worldbuilding.

A J
@NapoleonWilson Yep. It seems so.

As I've said before, though, that site must be an awful pain to moderate, in the sense of working out what's "primarily opinion-based" and what isn't.

11:53 AM
Which is what I'm saying. If you love whatiffery of that kind, you got to love that site and I'm sure it provides nice answers to that (neither am I saying it's unfit for the SE model). I simply don't get the fascination with questions like that.
And it has long outlived its site title anyway. That's hardly anymore about building worlds.

@Randal'Thor bleh

But if renaming it to WhatIf.SE, it's a reasonable site for sure.

@NapoleonWilson Wasn't there a WhatIf proposal at Area 51 that was forcibly shut down?

A J
I used to imagine and discuss those things with friends as a kid, but now..

Yeah, and it should have been shut down as a duplicate of Worldbuilding.

11:56 AM
@NapoleonWilson Heh. Not quite. Worldbuilding might have some "what if" questions, but not every "what if" question would fit on Worldbuilding, by a long way.
Only the ones that are, well, related to constructing fantasy worlds, on one level or another.

But that's the same reason many questions on SciFi (and the occasional things of that kind we get here) aren't really my kind. I'm just not interested in that kind of "elaborate speculation". But for the people who are, I'm sure the site provides a nice engagement.

Eg this. It just seems like a bunch of people giving out their opinions about economics and politics
I'm pretty sure you can modify it to be better suited on other SE sites

@Randal'Thor I know HNQ might not be representative in general, but it certainly contradicts that statement at least.

@BalarkaSen Well, I never said every Q&A on Worldbuilding is awesome and well supported. (Although the top answer to that question does at least have a lot of links and citations.)
I don't know WB well enough to find really exemplary top-notch answers, but (self-promotion alert) take this one, for example:
32
A: How can I Determine the Litter Size of a Species?

rand al'thorThe special terms used to distinguish between animals with large litters (and usually short childhoods and little parental investment per offspring) and those with small litters (and usually long childhoods and much parental investment per offspring) are r-selected and K-selected. From Wikipedia...

@Randal'Thor Sure, what I'm saying is, you can probably put literally every non-worthless questions on worldbuilding in other SE sites. and the worthless ones are... worthless. So why bother with the site at all?

12:01 PM
On the face of it, that question seems like it might be impossible to answer - different species have widely different litter sizes, and how could you predict what litter size a new imaginary species might have?

@Randal'Thor that's why they don't fulfill my SE taste else I can go to quora or yahoo answer

Turns out, we can actually say a lot about that using real-world science and biology: there are clear correlations between litter size and certain other attributes of an animal.

@Randal'Thor Yeah, and that totally sounds like it could fit in biology SE or something

@BalarkaSen I guess we have different definitions of "worthless" then.

@NapoleonWilson you mean monsterverse, universal-monster and all upcoming shit

12:03 PM
@AnkitSharma Blurgh!

@BalarkaSen lol

I don't say the questions can't be reasonably backed. I just don't care about the questions to begin with. Scientific speculation for sure, but speculation nevertheless.
Maybe I'm just not enough of a curious researcher, which might be very well true. (Which I guess is the same reason I don't care about Skeptics either.)

@Randal'Thor I do not think the question I linked or the one you linked (which essentially sounds like statistical biology) are worthless. I do think drilling wormholes is a worthless endeavor.
But yeah, I guess everything becomes opinion-based in this argument

A J
A question for WorldBuilding (what if one). How much time would it take finish a supper if human had eyes, nose and mouth at different spots?
@NapoleonWilson Capital case should have been fixed in that question as well.

I don't think they could have landed in Charlie's House to pick up the Family cause the Elevator can only fit 3 people so did they just land to give the Family the An...

@AJ Meh, I guess.

Seems like I have scared everybody.

@MovieReel Drgh! Read the books!

All I saw was an "of" in place of a "have" which is one of the worst crimes against language and intelligence possible.

ohh k

@NapoleonWilson Interesting. I ofn't seen that before.
Gotta use and abuse it.

@BalarkaSen You've really never seen that? It's a surprisingly common mistake, caused by people saying "would've" and having about zero grammatical sense why they say that.

@BalarkaSen I sof myself in the morning, and ofr when I'm not sure what to do.

@NapoleonWilson Huh. I kind've remember that I of seen "have" used instead of "of", though.
Not the other way around.

@BalarkaSen Wut? Really?

@Randal'Thor Ahah

@NapoleonWilson It's also one of that unusual class of language errors which are made more commonly by native speakers than by foreigners.

What's with delete and undelete over and over?

Well, have you looked at his edits? Someone was "displeased" and deletion is an all too common reaction in that case.
I'm not sure why that has to be dug up now, though.

A J
But it was first deleted by Ankit and then undelete by you and then community delete.
@NapoleonWilson Just curious.

Yeah, I see. Well, I don't know, whatever.

A J
see, know, whatever. :P

Oh, I think I know how it went. Ankit deleted it. But I undeleted it in order to flag it as offensive. This also deletes it, but comes with additional consequences and sets a clearer sign.
