Q: Why do people repeatedly hit the phone hook switch when disconnected?

George AdamsWatching a "Columbo" episode recently (c.1971), it had a scene that I realized I used to see a lot in older movies and TV shows. A woman is talking on her rotary phone, when the person on the other end is suddenly cut off. "Hello?" she says. Then she rapidly presses the hook switch of the ph...

Where is @Flyk, she might help to raise voice against using MCU tag.

8:04 AM
The MCU debacle is my doing. I still strongly believe that as tags are designed to help people find questions they want to answer, and that the tag should be applied to any questions about any property within the MCU. I would consider myself an expert in the MCU, and I want to be able to search on questions that I might be able to answer, which is significantly harder when following >15 tags.

I am the one here who even created the tag
And many other frenchise tag
But i always feel individual question should be tagged individually
Until they are about a whole franchise or big part of franchise covering more then one film

Yes, of course. Someone may be an expert in and wish to search on that and see every question about Iron Man 2, which they can and should do. But I have seen every film and TV show in the Marvel Cinematic Universe multiple times, and in order to make it easier for me to contribute quality content to the site (see my Scifi.StackExchange profile for proof of that) I should be able to search through the tag.

But the result of meta seems quite undecidable for now

Really? The two highest voted answers both support the use of the tag as I suggest, and the only answer to the contrary is in negative numbers..

You answer have 4 upvote/ 4 downvote
@DrRDizzle it has changed recently

8:15 AM
@AnkitSharma The top rated answer is "on my side", so to speak

Once Catija's answer was the most upvoted one

@AnkitSharma But it isn't now.

@DrRDizzle yeah i am aware of that and will give it a day or two.
Problem is that, if we do this . Then many more tag needed to be treated similarly too
All the frenchise tags we have.

@AnkitSharma But that will have a positive effect on the site, meaning people can find questions they want to answer easier;

@DrRDizzle really you guys come up with this tag:dc-tv-cw

@AnkitSharma A tag that will become realy useful as this universe expands

@DrRDizzle i mean it can be better named
Yeah vixen, legen of tomorrow
I hope someday Constantine become its full part too

@AnkitSharma Well, it seems the questions has at least started a little self-healing process, with JoshDM's answer going from 4 back to 2, so we're quite undecided again. Though, Catija's answer is still in the basement. But that's they way it is with low meta activity, just a tiny little attention from a certain group of people used to a different tagging policy can make quite an impact.

@AnkitSharma Urgh, really?

9:05 AM
I need a bigger feature bulletin
@TomCody its time to decide something and close the discussion
I am bore of it

@DrRDizzle But they only seem to have +2 at most, overal they're +10/-8. If that is a definite policy I don't know.

Give it some fixed amount of time and in final accept the top scorer

@AnkitSharma Or just leave everyone to use it as they see fit when we can't find a definite policy. Or we could make an advertizement for it on SciFi, they can certainly decide that for us, I guess. ;-)
@AnkitSharma I don't think I should accept a +6/-4 answer really, top-voted or not. If there's no definite policy, there's no definite policy.

@TomCody So you are saying anything less than total agreement is not put into effect? How do you get anything done here?

@DrRDizzle Not total agreement, but c'mon +10 vs -8? That's a decision for such an important tagging policy?

9:15 AM
@TomCody Its a majority decision. The real world bases significantly more important decisions on that.

Uhuh.

9:28 AM
At the end of the day, the community just doesn't really seem to know what to do with franchise tags (or at least with the MCU tag) and we might have to go a more Laissez-faire approach there if a consensus isn't possible (or until it becomes possible).

@AnkitSharma But at least the stupid non-site blog entry is gone, so we're back at 4 slots. And seeing that the "recommendation"/"current events" thing is at +4 already, we probably don't have to it that long anymore either and can finally put it to action. I'll probably look into it on the weekend.

@TomCody i mean, do even need this discussion anymore ?

10:53 AM
I am not fan of recent breaking bad questions but it looks like it will cross 200+ bar, first in a kind of achievement for a tag in here.
Do we want a celebration for it

@AnkitSharma Not really when the other one says we should drop it anyway. It would have been strange if my "current events" answer was completely differently voted than Jon's "recommendation" answer, but fortunately this didn't happen. But I'd still leave both of them until that chapter is closed.

I am ok with that

@AnkitSharma Well, they're quite a bit short, but I don't think they're bad questions.

That means you will give me free feature bulletin on weekend

@AnkitSharma We didn't celebrate the 100th either, though.

10:59 AM
@TomCody few can be rewarded and made bit better
@TomCody yeah , we missed that

@AnkitSharma Well, there's still the ID thing, the MCU thing and the meme thing.

@TomCody meme doesn't got space over bulletin yet
Is there some down-vote consideration?

@AnkitSharma I think it's random which ones are shown.
But maybe they also take the votes or the hotness into account.

So their will be 3 (including meme) in the end. I am fine with it.

@AnkitSharma 12 of the are closed anyway.

@TomCody Is there a way to sort starred chat message by number of stars it have.

11:08 AM
@AnkitSharma So you mean all starred chat messages from any time? I think that's impossible.
But a single starred message doesn't really make a meme either if it isn't employed recurringly. And for that we simply don't have an active enough chat community.

@TomCody by number of stars it have
@TomCody that what i want to add in ignore list

@AnkitSharma What do you mean?

I want messages which are starred by more then one people

Likely not possible at all. Still even a mass-starred message does not make a meme if was just a message once and didn't get employed repeatedly and repeatedly and repeatedly.

@DrRDizzle Yeah, but I think JoshDM makes way better points. I simply don't think your single argument is that important at all.

@TomCody All JoshDM does is refute the potentialy counter-arguements. One of the reasons he does this is, by his own admission, "search-ability ", which is my entire arguement

@DrRDizzle "All JoshDM does is refute the potentialy counter-arguements." - Indeed.
I just think your answer doesn't make a particularly strong point, that's all.

@TomCody My answer doesn't make a strong point as long as you are willing to deny why tags were added to the site in the place I guess.
But if you want to do that then we may as well not use tags at all

@DrRDizzle As I said already, your reasoning that this is based on the help center is debatable. And there is much more to the whole problem than the single "makes question findable" argument. It simply isn't that easy for me. That doesn't mean either you or I are wrong, it simply means we don't agree and have different interpretations of how that tag should be used.
@DrRDizzle Uh, I can't follow that now. But fortunately I have meeting now anyway.

11:55 AM
@TomCody So would you be more supportive of a new tag to add to all questions within the MCU?

12:08 PM
@TomCody Im saying that by ignoring the very reason that tags were introduced in the first place you are effectively saying that we may as well not use tags in the first place.

@JimmyHoffa lol
@TomCody so you removed it from feeds page too

They do not exist in any written record, only in his mind and in those of several individuals who were involved, willingly and unwillingly, and how those events affected the lives of all the concerned people. C u later guys. I might be absent from site on weekend, don't rip apart each other.

1:16 PM
@TomCody The classification is only useful for searching on!

Uhuh.
The main problem is though, that you start describing the movie instead of the question, what tags are actually for. By that logic we should as well tag each and every movie with its director, the primariy actors, the genre, and whatever inconsistently used tag slot robbing information.

@TomCody False equivalence and a big jump from what I am suggesting, and inherently wrong too. Yes, the tag would be describing the question as the question is about something set inside this cinematic universe. Conversely, unless the question is about behind the scenes, the use of actor/director tags is not needed.
And it all still comes back to the reason why tags are used - to help experts find questions that they can answer.

@DrRDizzle Indeed it's not as bad with franchise/series tags, that's why this meta question even exists and why the possiblity of using the tag for every question is not utter nonsense. But it does go into that direction, since it does tend to describe the movie when the question isn't really about the intricacies of the MCU cross-movie nature.
Doesn't change the fact for me that searchability is not the sole very reason for the existence of tags, and that's what we were talking about. Since that can very well go into the territory of describing the movie instead of the question if not handled carefully. What if I'm interested in every question about Ridley Scott's movies?
@DrRDizzle Which, I repeat, is debatable to some degree. You can very well have the opinion that this is the sole reason for tags, this is your good right and a valid viewpoint. But this doesn't really make it the ultimate truth and sole and only reason for tags to exist.

@TomCody You still haven't gave me another reason for tags other than searchability. From the tour "Tags make it easy to find interesting questions", "All questions are tagged with their subject areas."
From the help centre "A tag is a word or phrase that describes the topic of the question. Tags are a means of connecting experts with questions they will be able to answer by sorting questions into specific, well-defined categories.

Tags can also be used to help you identify questions that are interesting or relevant to you.
"

@DrRDizzle I did, classification and description of the question. If this isn't a valid reason for you then, well surprise, we simply disagree there. There's nothing wrong with that.

1:29 PM
Also
@TomCody Both of those are just helping people search for questions! I feel like I'm being trolled.

@DrRDizzle I'm sorry if that is how you feel, that's not my intention. I simply feel we're going in circles. You have an approach to tagging and I have one. I simply say none of those are wrong, they're just different. I don't know what's trolling about that, but I don't know how we can reach any reasonable conclusion here either. We disagree on the matter and that's pretty much all there is to it.

@TomCody The main difference of course being that my approach to tagging is backed up by the entire Stack Exchange network, the Help Centre and the Tour page.

I also don't say I am completely against your MCU policy (well, I am currently, but it's not as if I couldn't live with it and adapt to it), only that your argumentation provided in your answer is not enough for me.
@DrRDizzle Sorry, but it simply isn't as easy and clear for me as this seems to be to you. What are you trying to achieve here?

@TomCody A sensible tagging system that helps people find questions that they want to read and answer.

1:56 PM
@DrRDizzle Sure. And everyone has made his arguments clear in the respective meta discussion as well as voted according to those arguments.

@TomCody I am still yet to see an arguement against my proposed use of the that isn't simply taking the logic behind it to the extreme in order to make it seem inpractical, effectively a straw man arguement. I can see we aren't going to agree on this despite me quoting the site itself on the use of tags and why they exist, so I'm going to leave it for now until someone else can contribute to this discussion.

@DrRDizzle I have presented a few in the question and the answers also have presented some. If those are not significant enough for you, that's fine, too, nobody expects you to agree with those arguments. To each his own.
@DrRDizzle I don't really see that much use to those discussions in chat anyway, and the meta discussion seems pretty fruitful already. But maybe I'm just exhausted from the millions of chat discussions on tagging that we had in the past.

@phantom42 I didn't understand why people seemed to think that SciFi and Movies didn't get on when it was bought up yesterday, but now I get the distinct feeling that I do. Its an inferiority complex - we have higher quality Q&A's and a more active community.
<sigh>, simply <sigh>. I've tried, I've really tried. But now I'm just tired of this crap.

@TomCody It's amusing that their superiority complex makes them think that they're "better" at stuff than we are.

did he really say that?
oh, ffs.
and btw: "them" is sitting right here and "they" don't all think that

4:23 PM
@MikeEdenfield It's appreciated that all of "them" don't think that way... but having members of the community complaining and saying that we're merely being the little kid trying to make our own way in the world, and making the assumption that "it's my way or the highway"... instead of allowing M&TV to find its way as a site and decide what it wants to do. There's nothing wrong withe SF helping and supporting and recommending... but if we make a decision to do something else, it should be respected.
We may eventually figure out that "big brother Sci-Fi was right"... and we may decide that we really like our decision... but whatever it is, we're allowed to make those choices.

@Catija I've been on both sites the same amount of time. My suggestion to help me use this site more efficiently has been me with resistance for reasons that are still completely unclear to me.

all of that is fine. I don't think anyone is telling you not to make your own decisions. I, at least, am merely giving my opinion based on my experience as a user of both sites.
and there are rotten users on every Stack network site, it's one of the costs of being on the Internet.
can't let them define "us" or "yours" reaction to "us" (I don't even particularly like the us/them dynamic, TBH)

@DrRDizzle I've never said that you're not allowed to voice your opinion. I've said that I disagree with it... firmly... and I've said that I don't appreciate the potential idea that users of Sci-Fi are coming here and voting on Meta questions when they aren't regular users of this site... That's not acceptable behavior. I don't got to Sci-Fi and vote on their meta questions because I don't use that site. I'm not saying that's what necessarily happened...

Well I'm not one of those purely hypothetical users. I've answered questions here before

But the discussion yesterday, that was known on Sci-Fi certainly seems to have caused a cluster of votes that I'm not certain were appropriate.

4:34 PM
@Catija If you bring a question to the attention of a different site, you can't be surprised about the sudden interest of the other site in teh question

@Catija To their defense, all of the users here now are quite active and apreciated users of Movies.SE.
@Catija The meta question seems to have recovered already, though.

@DrRDizzle we didn't bring the attention to it.

@Catija I think someone from here did

@DrRDizzle As said, you don't have to agree with the arguments counter to your approach. But assuming there are no valid (in anyone's viewpoint) arguments and it's simply done to "make it different than SciFi" is another thing.

@TomCody There are no arguements counter to my approach beyond "This train of thought could lead to poor tagging practices", which as demonstrated by SciFi.SE is not the case.

4:41 PM
And, and this is not to be taken as offense or whatever, to me (as admittedly not that highly experienced user) the tagging on SciFi can be quite a mess. At the end of the day it is highly different from ours. Character tags, tagging questions with authors instead of works, tags like movie used on various different questions. That might work for SciFi, but this isn't a tagging approach I'd really embrace at all here.
Which is not to say that your propsoed MCU aproach is bad or doesn't have valid arguments. Merely that it isn't the whole truth and that there are very well counter arguments against it, even if you might not agree with them.

@TomCody except we hate all of those things because they're wrong. Those are the result of people misusing tags, and we waste a lot of time cleaning that crap up. That is part of the experience we are hoping to save you from.

@MikeEdenfield Oh, now look at that.

character tags are verboten, and media-type tags are only allowed on story-id questions.
unfortunately we have 4 years of doing-it-wrong to fix. it's rather painful :(

Well, see what happens when I come as an inexperienced user and look at your tagging. In the same way as , and are used here way more consistently than you might think.

@TomCody Who on Earth is searching for questions by any of those tags? Experts in action? Experts on all franchises?

4:46 PM
@DrRDizzle <sigh> I hear ya, I really hear ya, tags are for searching, I hear ya. If I have a question about the intricacies of movie franchises in general or the intricacies of the horror genre I want this question classified as such.
And the situation of genre tags isn't entirely perfect anyway. A problem we're aware of and working one.
