Q: What's with Interstellar's strange sound mixing?

Napoleon WilsonI hope this question doesn't come across as too opinion-based, but when watching Interstellar I noticed, that the sound mixing was a bit "off". Dialogue was sometimes very hard to understand and simply overpowered by the sound effects or Hans Zimmer's (albeit amazing) score. Now normally I'd just...

I'd even say Interstellar's soundtrack might beat the Dark Knight trilogy, which was my personal Zimmer-favourite so far.

meireikeiMy memory is fuzzy about this movie, but somehow after more than 20 years it is somewhere alive in my brain, I remember: probably us-movie from the 80s a group of students on a holiday trip in a shabby van they drink a lot of beer they come from a university with low prestige, but they are pro...

Q: What was the telekinesis about in Birdman?

Hack-RMy girlfriend and I were just watching "Birdman" and had to leave early because she had a seizure. I don't often go to films and it's not out, so I'm wondering if someone would mind telling me what the telekinesis was about? I assume it was in his mind like the voice of his former character?

Q: A question about a line in My Fair Lady

ALANIn My Fair Lady the following dialogue ocurs: ELIZA: What's this for? HIGGINS: To wipe your eyes. To wipe any part of your face that feels moist. Remember, that's your handkerchief and that's your sleeve. Don't confuse one with the other, if you want to become a lady in a sho...

@MovieReel My god, don't wipe your nose with your sleeve! If you didn't get this, your parents failed, really. ;-(
And has Al Pacino ever been in a version of My Fair Lady at all? ;-)

1:31 PM
@AndrewMartin Can't post the Gump thing as an answer because mine isn't verified either
But if someone has the DVD, they can post it themselves

@Walt: It doesn't have to be definitive. You've a good link to a source (at least my section does) which says it was in the unpublished script. That'd be more than enough for me to go on. It's up to you obviously, but that's my view on it

It's a bit moot, it was just filler dialogue anyway (there's none in the script either)
Just not invested enough, really :P

@Walt: I guess I just over-answer these things. You're probably right

@MovieReel I know what this one is. It's half the movies in the 80s ;)
Hey, most of the screen has green answer icons, I ain't complaining
So keep at it!

@Walt: I go on little sprees. Right now, it's bugging me that we're at 93% answer rate. I want 94%.

1:38 PM
Think we were at 95 not so long ago. Not sure what happened

@Walt: What we really need is a mod to delete all the old identify-this answers from > a year where the OP has disappeared. I think that happened once before, a while back, and it boosted the unanswered rate way up
*way down
@Walt: More questions I guess. Those identify-this ones in particular just sit unanswered for ages (unless YOU happy to be around :))

I go over old IDs when few new ones come in. Most of the old ones are gone

@Walt: I check in and out of old questions every once in a while. There's a surprising number I want to answer, but it's not definitive. For example this question.
I think the answer is simply "no". But you just keep checking for more sources, *just in case8

Maybe we went down 2 points because you were taking a break after your previous spree ;)

@AndrewMartin Well, you can always help the with flags, I've done that from time to time, when TylerShads (the anti-ID mod) had disappeared again. Just be sure to stay within the rules for ID-deletion.

1:41 PM
@ChristianRau: What are the rules? I'm sure they're on the meta somewhere, but I'm not that familiar with them
@ChristianRau: I currently only vote to close if it's a bad question. I never take into account the length of time it's been open

@AndrewMartin Yeah, not willing to go over a zillion reddit threads just for that

@AndrewMartin Feel free to delete all your comments on that Pacino My Fair Lady answer.

Definitely. It's just every once in a while I flick through unanswered. It's surprising how many decent enough questions get asked at a bad time of the day, are pushed down my other questions and then never get views or answers.
@ChristianRau: I liked our comments! It took me a while to get my head around writing that detailed comment :)

@AndrewMartin They're a bit scattered all around, but a good started would be this pseudo-discussion.
I've always employed a rather conservative interpretation, deleting only the bare minimum. Like 14 days open, unregistered user, no up-voted answer, no activity from asker for 14 days (maybe no comment/edit-response).

Thanks. I'll have a look at that. By the way, I think it's looking like WWE will be on topic here if it's a story detail, off topic if its a move info request, which is what @System Down suggested. It's not had much participation, but it seems to be going that way
To be honest, I tend to leave them for months. I sometimes organise by newest question, then jump to the very oldest and try and take the five or ten oldest and either vote to close, answer them or bump them.

1:47 PM
@AndrewMartin That's a nice compromise to me, even if harder to enforce on an automated basis.

@AndrewMartin You might've been thinking about Captivity or Silent House. I did at first, anyway, and also Inside (though it isn't any of them)

I think it's good enough. I also think, given the downvotes, that the policy on the soundtrack questions will remain as is. I wanted a discussion just to get consensus, since I posted loads of supposedly off topic questions that didn't have a single close vote. But I don't think anyone's really that concerned by it, so we'll continue as is.
@Walt: I was thinking of Inside more than anything, but yeah, I couldn't come up with anything

Might be a local thing, an ep of a French anthology or something
Will try my best too to judge which ID is doomed and vote to close when I go over the old ones

I'm always wary. Some of them give such scant details, and are't great questions, but they still somehow get answers. It's amazing how people like yourself can find the correct movies despite some of the limited info that's provided

They have to be pretty bad\obscure not to give us some direction
Is Homeland slowly redeeming itself?

1:55 PM
Well, to be honest to me the problem are not the undetailed ones but the crappy ones, though they're usually related. But now and then there could ocassionally come up a well-written question where the asker basically doesn't know anything. But the way the question is written makes it clear that he tries to provide as much as he can. And that in turn is absolutely no problem for me. It's just a matter of quality less than detail (even if the "official" stance is different).

Let's hope the detail notification works (I think it kinda has so far)
Hell, one of the reasons I haven't asked a question yet is because I don't want my first one to be crappy ;)
So I research them a bit first. But then I find the answer while researching...

@Walt The trick is to not research too much. ;-) If Wikipedia or the first few google results don't give it, I'm fine with asking.

I've asked three, but regret them all to be honest!
As you say, usually a bit of research will turn it up

I've accumulated a few. Discovery shows are on topic, yes?

Yup. They're TV

2:02 PM
Excellent

@AndrewMartin You seem to have suddenly developed a very lax interpretation of "what's on TV is on-topic here" judging from your recent meta-post (on that strange renaming thing). (not saying Discovery shows are off-topic, though)

Are we about to see a flurry of questions?

@AndrewMartin That's the thing, I don't want to regret them :)
@AndrewMartin From me? Sure. A very slow, delayed flurry

@ChristianRau: It's just me being casual with words. If it's news/sports/current affairs I know it's off topic. But things like reality shows, discovery/nat geographic shows etc, are all on topic.
Similarly music videos off topic

Probably should have some definitive rule - if it has X, it's on topic
Like if it has a script (reality is scripted, let's face it)

2:06 PM
I've found it is a little difficult getting meta discussions going on this. We do tend to play it by ear.
If it has a script is actually good enough - but exceptions would be things like big brother, which doesn't really have a script.
(whereas I agree shows like Only Way is Essex, Made in Chelsea, Jersey Shore etc do have scripts)

Doesn't it? :P
Poor Made in Chelsea writers, then, because their scripts are rendered indecipherable

lol. Big Brother is more just mayhem by design. Having said that, I'm aware many people (myself included) over analyse these things
After all the discussion about WWE, it's not like there's a plethora of wrestling questions on the site
Just like there aren't a huge deal of reality show questions either. Most of the poor quality questions are on perfectly on topic issues and are just badly written or overly simplistic

@AndrewMartin Thank god

@AndrewMartin Yeah, surprised there aren't a lot of reality Qs. It's almost all there is now on TV

2:12 PM
I guess they go elsewhere for their fix
I know for wrestling, for example, there are hugely detailed wrestling forums online where you'll get far better advice than you'd get here

@AndrewMartin Or that there aren't a lot of intricacies to Honey Booboo

Why did Mama June and Sugar Bear split?
Although to be fair that'd be off topic - current affairs

Yeah, that's more of a question for the Federal Court
Ugh
Apologies for dragging the conversation this low, though... Going to catch some z's

No worries
Where are you anyway?
I'm in the UK, so it's about 2.20pm here.
Must have missed you. See you soon anyways!

Q: 1950s movie about reform school (?) where the staff is ageless and made of stone

Q: 1960s horrible cheesy super hero movie with a modified Chevy station wagon

ksdaddyThis was a movie I saw at the theater in the late 60s or so. It was a Batman/Robin type duo and they modified a 1960 Chevy station wagon into their "Batmobile", complete with blades that swung out from the doors. It was awful and low budget and I want to see it again.
