Oh, of course! I haven't even started all of that yet! We have to wait for the NFL schedule to come out! Arghhh!
You are so cool that you even remember that I want to see Dr. Starkly @NapoleonWilson!!

@steelerfan But apparently I didn't remember his name. ;-)
But seriously, we've talked about this twice now, last time not so long ago. Of course I remember that. I'm not just sitting here talking stuff all the time and not caring for what you say. You're important to me. ;-)

@NapoleonWilson Haha! Frigging auto correct on my work iPad!!

@steelerfan So I was right? \o/

@NapoleonWilson awwww, you are so frigging cool! You are important to me too, babe! :)
@NapoleonWilson Yes, you were right!!

Oh, I see, one of Henry's wives. The Tudor freak is showing. ;-)

12:15 AM
Haha! Yep! I am a Tudor freak! ;)
@AndrewMartin I really don't see how anyone can say that Seven wasn't a win for the "bad guy". I am totally with you on that! I don't understand the down vote either!
@NapoleonWilson This is why most of my time will be in England :)

@steelerfan Sure, it's a great country, I loved it there, too.

@NapoleonWilson Well, at least I can speak English, sort of ;)

@steelerfan: Yeah, I gave up on a comment response to that. He seems to say "none of these bad guys are villains, here are a bunch of other villains and none of them won so you're wrong".

Meh, needs some comment conversion. HNQ my ass, if you just give a simple example, I'm not gonna friggin' care if your stupid non-answer has 6 upvotes if it's just a comment.

I was stopped due to upvote
Anyways , i don't think we should allow that question

I like the question, although it needs reworded to be a touch more objective. I love the interest it's gotten and it does bring some fascinating things out. But almost all the answers are just one line "here's a film, there, enjoy it"
That's not much good

@NapoleonWilson Comments are already too flooded

So, removed 4 more answers. That's exactly the kind of situation I wanted to avoid. But well, it was a good idea to protect it, should shield it against useless 101-answers.
@AnkitSharma I closed it once, but then tried to improve it into a more explanative direction. I think it can work, but it has to be shielded about "here's a cool example" crap. And protection should definitely help with that.

11:50 AM
@NapoleonWilson: I agree totally. Could be good, but needs some shielding. It did bring Eric Lippert to the site, which was cool.

@MetaReel Wow... two in a week... at least this one was asked on the right part of the site...
Oh, nevermind.

@AndrewMartin I think removing the second part from the "bad guy" question title wasn't the best idea, since the first part is actually the worse "give me your examples" stuff while the second part should be what we're really looking out for.
@Catija Um, almost. ;-)

2:48 PM
So, I still got that extra swag from SE's christmas event and I'd like to give it out as reward for some cool community building competition. On the one hand it should be somehow constructive for the site (i.e. rewarding actual contributions). But it should also be a bigger event than the usual challenges, because swag!...
...And the nomination should be explicit, so that really only people can win that actually want the swag. In the same way I would exclude anyone from the first 2 top-user pages who already had their legitimate chance for getting swag anyway (at least unless they can mention good reasons why they still want some).
Ideas?
I thought about something like a questions/answers competition, where people can nominate their own posts in a pre-round as meta answers, followed by an additional period for voting on those by the community with nominations closed (to reduce the disadvantages of late-comers due to vote accumulation over time).

3:11 PM
WOW. I am so glad that I play trivia crack so that I am aware that Thomas Jefferson was President of the United States during the war of 1812!!!!! Frigging trivia crack!!! Arghhh!!

@steelerfan And in which situation did you need that now?

@NapoleonWilson I don't need that now, I am just annoyed that the answer was wrong. I'm just complaining. That game annoys me sometimes ;)

Was that the one where they set the White House ablaze?

You would know if you ever played that frigging game. The questions and answers are voted on by the community. The only problem is, the community are morons. There are wrong answers sometimes!!! Like now!!! The game is just addictive!!! CURSE YOU TRIVIA CRACK!!
@NapoleonWilson Yes :)

@steelerfan Oh, so you mean that answer was even wrong? Wow, that's like declaring accepted/upvoted SE answers as ultimate truth. Now I can't see how that wouldn't go wrong.

3:27 PM
@NapoleonWilson Yes!! Their correct answer was Thomas Jefferson!! The correct answer, James Madison wasn't even an option!!! You want to know what the other two options were? Bill Clinton and Obama!! Arghhh!!

The game is addictive, though. Hence the word "crack" in the title ;)
I'm at the mercy of morons!!

But I thought the word "crack" can also denote some kind of genius/expert.
@steelerfan Aren't we all, throughout our whole lives?

@Catija Oh god, did you really have to link to that meta discussion in your answer? I'd really like to not shed too much light on that crap to be honest.

3:36 PM
@NapoleonWilson Do you have a different one you prefer?
I know we've had a couple.

@Catija You could take the one linked from there, where cde asked about how to handle such comments in general.

I don't see that one...

@Catija This? It's quite a bit more constructive IMHO and not ladden with unrelated grief, indignance and assholism.

That seems to be more about cross duplicates... "this has been asked by someone else on ___", here's a link.

Otherwise sounds like reasonable advice. You could possibly inlcude the option that it could be cross-posted but only if sufficiently changed to fit the target audience better, but that could make you comment a bit too complicated.
@Catija Hmm, granted. I didn't realize this so much. Meh, so be it, I don't want to dictate what meta questions you link to and it's admittedly strongly related. I just don't think this thing sheds a good light on anyone, but I also agree that good PR isn't the purpose of your meta answer.

3:43 PM
Yeah. I was thinking about that... I might simply mention it but outside the comment itself. It's a bit too complex for a comment.

@Catija You could maybe change it to "don't cross post the exact same question".

@NapoleonWilson Yeah, the purpose is to show the hell that can happen when you phrase them poorly, and, unfortunately, it's a very good (or bad) example. I think, in general, both you and Ankit did a good job of responding to the question and I don't think that anyone will feel it reflects poorly on M&TV.
Yeah.

@Catija Well, it has since gone from once -7 to now -3. There apparently are indeed some people who agree with his sentiments (and apparently weren't repelled sufficiently by the tone in which those were uttered). But nevermind.

@NapoleonWilson Interesting... I feel like SFF had the same negative reaction to him, in general.

4:11 PM
The problem is, if someone acts like a total asshole it gives an impression that is hard to shake off even if he makes more reasonable post later on. We are still dealing with people here and tone and first impressions have a big influence on how you're seen. I think he and his ideas tend to suffer from this a bit, and from the habit of not being able to disengage from discussions when the end of their usefulness is apparent.

Very true. Some people dig in and don't let go, even if dozens tell them that they're looking at it the wrong way.

The problem is also that if you argue on and on, you can try to reason as objectively and constructively as you want, it's still interpreted as annoying and unable to stop. And the more you then emphasize that you are not trying to troll (be that even true), the more it influences people into thinking you actually are. This is a general problem in such internet discussions (or discussions in general) that is sometimes hard to realize and cope with.
Shit, I just inadvertently pressed some keyboard shortcut and now all the fonts seem to look strange. What did I do?

I don't know what browser/system you're on... and I don't know if it's browser-based or system based.

Or maybe it's already back to normal, I really am not sure.

Must not have been that odd if you can't tell whether it's back to normal or not.

Hmm, it seems it's back to normal already. Strange.
Hmm, it seems I just zoomed in one step.

Anyone know anything about the AU site? they have an interesting top bar I've never seen on other sites.

Too dumb choice

@Catija Hmm, I was there once or twice in my life, what's so interesting about the top bar, I have to check.
Wow, that's indeed interesting. It seems tightly coupled to the entire Ubuntu community.

@NapoleonWilson Nothing much you missed, just woman's private parts :D
@Catija I think they are sponsored by Ubuntu too.

Oh my.

@AnkitSharma Oh, so they actually link to the Ubuntu site or something? I don't really know anything about Ubuntu.
Oh, weird... it's like part of Ubuntu...

4:32 PM
@NapoleonWilson Worse part was i missed the profile picture while deleting his answer but luckily cde flagged it before deletion
@Catija We use Ubuntu in office.......or we can say forced to use :D

I didn't use linux for ages. The only reason I tend to use it is to check if my stuff compiles and works in gcc and clang.

I use lame windows 8.1 at home and ubuntu in office
@Catija I don't know the history but that site is full of activity and there are official Ubuntu people there too. I checked in initial days of learning Ubuntu but then quit

Sure. I'm mostly noticing that if you click "Ubuntu" at the top of the page, it goes to the actual Ubuntu site.

I heard them complain, though, that there's hardly any voting there at all (yes, less than here). And looking through the frontpgae I can't help but attribute some truth thereto, at least from a very short first glance.

@AnkitSharma I'm seeing double.

4:40 PM
@NapoleonWilson Yeah voting is less , hardly notice more then 3 during my last visit
@Catija My internet got stuck and now msg duplicated

5:07 PM
@Catija I don't frequent Ask Ubuntu all that often, but I believe they're one of the oldest Q&A sites on SE. Maybe that's what they did back then and decided to not do that again/

@MattD Hmmm. Interesting.

Question for myself, though: why did I have a blue number in here that, when clicked, mentioned something about "offensive flags"?

That was what brought up Ask Ubuntu in the first place... seems like someone hopped in their room and started posting a bunch of bad content, which was then flagged and removed.

@Catija Ah, so it was flagged content in chat for me to review or something? Not something I posted that was flagged?

@MattD Exactly.

5:10 PM
@MattD Correct. Once you have sufficient network rep, you start seeing chat flags that you can help with.

@Catija Gotcha. I figured that's what it was, but wanted to be sure as I don't recall saying anything in chat over the last few days that would warrant a flag.
In fact I think I only popped in here briefly yesterday and said nothing.
Oh damn, this is across ALL chatrooms?

@MattD Yep. And you'll see flags for rooms you never join.

@Catija Yeah, just had one for a video posted in one of the video game rooms I believe.
Anyone else see that, with the Black Eyed Peas video?

Yep. I saw it.

5:15 PM
@MattD It was game development actually.

@NapoleonWilson So video games? :P
I didn't think it needed flagged.

@MattD Granted.

@MattD Some people are very sensitive of the word "retarded".

@Catija Yeah, I figured that's why it was flagged, but without knowing what it was in reference to or if someone just posted it, I'm whatevs about all that.
Definitely don't support the word being used as a pejorative, though.

@steelerfan It's not going anywhere! You can always take a second trip. I'm sure Napoleon won't mind.

Haha! I'm pretty sure that Napoleon will want to be rid of me after a few days. I talk a lot and I am very excitable. There is really no peace with me around ;)

@steelerfan He claims to be a quiet guy... perhaps your chatty-ness will simply fill that silence. :D

8:06 PM
:/

@Catija Haha! True! Poor Napoleon. Sometimes there is no shutting me up ;)

@steelerfan Who says that I don't like that?

@steelerfan Food usually helps... particularly good food.

@NapoleonWilson I don't know. I don't know what kind of people that you like to be around. I'm just really social and extroverted. I'm sure that you have already figured that out :)
@Catija mmmm..........food.

@Catija Don't talk about food, i want to sleep, don't make me hungry.

8:13 PM
@Walt: I'm always curious - what's the proportion of the ident questions you answer that you've actually seen versus films you find my researching the description?

@steelerfan Well, having such a non-talkative person like me around me could get quite boring, no? So I don't have problem with overly extroverted people. You're not annoying, you're simply full of life, as much as I can judge.

I'm frigging starving right now.

@steelerfan If you have a break, why are you chatting instead of eating??? Silly!

Grrrr.......
Now i have to get something to chew

@NapoleonWilson Uhm, I don't think that you're boring at all, silly! Just because you don't talk a lot doesn't mean that you're boring!
@Catija I don't swim on Wednesdays, so I usually only have a smoothie until I leave. So, I am usually hungry by this time :)

8:17 PM
@steelerfan Which wasn't what I wanted to say. I mean mixing just people like me could end up in boring situations. Throwing someone more alive into the mix makes it more interesting.

@steelerfan I think he's saying that two people who don't talk a lot getting together doesn't make sense because they won't talk to each other, so it's boring... but if one is talkative and the other quiet, it's like opposites attract.

@NapoleonWilson Ahhh...gotcha. Don't worry, I will have you talking a lot in no time :)

@steelerfan: Sounds almost threatening

@steelerfan Well, I already told you I don't feel like I can't talk to you.

@steelerfan :(

8:21 PM
@NapoleonWilson We will get a few drinks down you! WOOT!
@AndrewMartin Haha!!

@steelerfan I just said I can talk to you without drinks, too. But sure, not that drinks wouldn't help even more. ;-)

@NapoleonWilson I know that you don't need drinks, I am just messing with you! I really wouldn't put you through the exhausting task of drinking with me, anyways ;)

@steelerfan But as much as I heard that's supposed to be quite an experience.

@NapoleonWilson Yeah, it's quite the experience for whomever is with me ;) Don't worry, I trust you. I would totally drink with you :)

@AndrewMartin No idea. Ballparking it, half? I heard of most of them, but my memory's no good and I usually forget the name too. :( Probably half all the way, more if it's just bits of them (I channel surf when I'm bored).

8:31 PM
@Walt: It's just ridiculously amazing. I google a ton of them and have no idea what any of them are. It's seriously amazing. If you left, half of them would just be unknowns!

Yeah, I used to Google them all the time and wouldn't ever find them... I mean... I clearly find them occasionally... but usually I just simply recognize them from the beginning.

That's it for me too. If I recognise them, I'm good. If I don't, I almost never succeed in researching. I stopped trying a while back, too.

I hardly even read most of 'em, especially not the good ones.

@AndrewMartin "have no idea" That's a good thing. A lot of it is trashy horror. :) I just watched a lot of it (up until some years ago)

Indeed!

8:35 PM
@Walt I actually thought that the parasite one sounded like Slither

@steelerfan Yeah, parasites and chestbursting is a genre unto itself

Too bad that Forrest Gump's muted statement about the Vietnam War doesn't actually exist.

@AndrewMartin I usually remember some other vague thing about them, though, which adds to the keywords

@Walt Yeah, there was something about ground beef in that movie that sounded familiar.

There's the odd thing I get, but honestly 80% of the answers you give, I've never even heard of the films.
The other 20% I have, but most of the time I'd never link the OP's ask to the answer

8:37 PM
@NapoleonWilson There are a lot of things about that movie that I have questions about.

Like that one about the sketch that really sounded like Everything You Wanted To Know About Sex, I suddenly really vaguely recalled there was some famous comedian who starred in it reluctantly. And was convinced it was Jerry Lewis at first.

@steelerfan It's a great film. I've seen it a million times. And I still had to cry like 5 minutes in. I seriously gotta check my hormone balance or something.

Crazy. I salute you, just crazy!

@AndrewMartin That's good too. I assure you that when it comes to the movies in my ID answers I actually liked, the numbers are way lower :O

@NapoleonWilson awwww, yeah, I love that movie, too. I'm trying to think about what is 5 minutes in that is sad......

8:41 PM
@steelerfan It wasn't really that sad. It was just Forrest meeting Jenny in the bus for the first time. And I don't really know why that made me cry suddenly.

@AndrewMartin To be fair, my highest rated ID answers are also usually the easiest ones and would've been answered anyway. I was just around.

@Walt: For me, any time the question says "TV movie" I just assume I don't know it :D
@Walt: I never understand that. 3 of my top 5 answers are from the last week, and they weren't even particularly complex.
Q: Why is Shawshank cinematically important? A: It's a good film.

@Walt Because people reconize it and thus agree even more with the answer, especially if they like the film.

Q: What does Silence of the Lambs mean? A: A line in the script.
Q: Why are films where the bad guys win so rare? A: They're not.

@AndrewMartin Not those "Why is this obvious title the title", I hope

8:42 PM
Simple! No idea why they were that popular

@AndrewMartin Oh, whoops.

@Walt: Crazy!

@AndrewMartin "70s Australian TV show"... um... yeah. I'm not going to find that.

You know the Mulholland Drive one was trending on the hot list earlier
@Catija: My thoughts too. I just forget it immediately lol

@NapoleonWilson Maybe because it was sweet that she was the only one that would let him sit down on the bus.

8:43 PM
@AndrewMartin But you still have to phrase it properly and exhaustively. I'd also bet during your last activity period HNQs weren't such a big thing, yet.

@AndrewMartin Oh, you answered that Ex Machina one too? Not... one of my favorite Qs. :S Your talents are wasted

@NapoleonWilson: That's definitely true. Many more people are here than before, that's definitely noticeable
@Walt: lol maybe. Sometimes the obvious questions are just the ones people love.

@steelerfan Probably primarily also because of the voice over and the whole love of his life thing and the foreshadowing of their whole relationship. Still I never really had to cry at that point.

But my # of answers pales in comparison to yours

@AndrewMartin HNQ logic. They're sometimes the easiest ones
@AndrewMartin Again, was just lucky enough to be around. But finally, something I actually know well and like :)

8:47 PM
@NapoleonWilson Sure you had to cry! Nothing wrong with that :) I cried at the end of Armageddon, which nobody else understands :)

@Walt: Well, I'm glad you're here!
2

@AndrewMartin Just barely. :( Still swamped.
And might have to go soon

@steelerfan Sure there's nothing wrong with that. I love crying to movies actually. And I cried to the weirdest things, Like 2012, which for some reason moved me a lot.

@Walt: Oh dear. Is it work that's been keeping you busy?

...And it might be for the best, before I blurt out what I really think about Gump

8:49 PM
@NapoleonWilson: I assume the opening to Up just destroyed you then?

@AndrewMartin Always :,(

@Walt: What do you do?

@NapoleonWilson OMG!! I cried at the end of that movie too! Haha! I thought I was the only one!!!

@AndrewMartin Hmm, I honestly didn't find that film as great as everyone else. Sure, was nice, but well. And the opening was nice, too. But didn't move me that much. I guess it's rather subjective what moves me or not.

@AndrewMartin Oh, would you look at the time :P

8:50 PM
@Walt: Ah, is this a big secret then. Interesting...
@NapoleonWilson: I bawl my eyes out at the opening. Every damn time.

Recently I cried quite a lot to The Prince of Tides, but I guess that's a film where you're supposed to do that.

@AndrewMartin Oh, god... that was horrid. I can't believe they would do that...

@AndrewMartin Well, since Napoleon is a spy, there is no telling what Walt does for a living ;)

@AndrewMartin Nah, not really. I just rarely reveal anything personal on a forum this popular

@NapoleonWilson I have never seen that movie :(

8:52 PM
@Walt: Fair enough. Sure just post your address and I'll come round and we can discuss.
@Catija: It was tragic, and so, so brilliant.

@steelerfan I'd never seen it either, but it was on TV at the weekend so I just tried. Pretty good IMHO.

@AndrewMartin The mods probably know where I'm from, for like emergencies and stuff, and that's enough for me

@Walt: That's pretty sound advice.

@NapoleonWilson Nick Nolte and Barbara Streisand, right?

@Walt: Although as you haven't said what you do, and as Walt is short for Walter, and as I've only heard of one other Walter... I am deep down now wondering if you're a meth peddling chemist

8:54 PM
@AndrewMartin Yeah. But it really gets you in the feels...

@Catija: Totally

The only Pixar thing that really moved me to cry quite a bit is Inside Out so far, I guess. But that might also be due to the fact that I usually don't watch them in cinema or alone, to fully concentrate on them.

@Walt: But I'll assume not :D

@AndrewMartin Nothing against you guys, I like you all. :) It's just like the 50th largest online site or something. People know who I am in smaller online communities. We even get together once in a while :)

@steelerfan Yes.

8:55 PM
@AndrewMartin A common mistake. :) I picked this nic before I saw the show.

@Walt: No, that makes sense. We all probably give out too much online. Heck I use my real name. Probably am not that hard to google/find.

@AndrewMartin Luckily for you, it's a common one, though

People keep adding comments under my "movies where bad guys win" listing more and more random films. "What about Rocky I and II?" is the latest.

Walt is mysterious and magical... No one knows who he really is.

Yeah, probably needs another cleanup run. ;-(

8:56 PM
@Walt: Indeed. Never really worried about it though. My address and phone number aren't online. Name and email are and I'm not that bothered by that.

But we know that our lives on M&TV would be empty without him.
2

@Catija: I know. I don't know if he's 15 or 50. It's very mysterious.
@Catija: Or if he's even a he!

All good guesses

OMG!!! Walt is a "chemist" and Napoleon is a spy!!! This is AWESOME!!! ;)

@Catija Aww likewise :)

8:58 PM
You can google me. I'm a fabric designer. andrewmartin.co.uk

@Catija I swear I don't mean to be. Make this site more popular, and problem solved

(Disclaimer: That may not actually be me).

Heh, I had an online doppleganger too. Their site was awful
