Q: Why Sam "Ace" Rothstein was spared by the bosses in Casino?

StudioWorks"During an after trial meeting, the bosses decide to eliminate anyone involved or with knowledge of the skim in order to keep them from testifying." The car bombing wasn't authorized and Nikky was the one responsible for that.

Q: Why wasn't Ronan interested in the other Infinity Stone in possession of The Collector?

invalid_idBoth the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy seem to spin around the 6 Infinity Stones. In Thor: The dark world, the Aether is given to the Collector. He explicitly says "One down, five to go.". In Guardians of the Galaxy he obtains another Inifinity Stone "The Orb". However, later his p...

Can someone explain why this question is about to be closed (with no downvotes or comments, BTW)? I mean, when *are* these things allowed? Can we have clearer rules about the actor ID tag (or just disallow it altogether)?

Q: Is there any term for the following subgenres of horror movies?

TusharHorror movies can be basically divided into two broad categories: Where the 'villain' is a supernatural being. As in Exorcist, Conjuring etc.. Where the 'villain' is a human, usually a serial killer. As in Halloween, Scream etc.. My question is this: are there any widely accepted terms that d...

Q: What's with Mamet's dialogue style?

CGCampbellIf one watches a David Mamet written and directed film, such as Heist (2001), Spartan (2004), or even Ronan (1998), it will quickly become apparent that the dialogue is, well, different. Often times very jarringly so. According to the wiki page, "Mamet speak" is cynical, street-smart edge, preci...

Q: First movie where you hear breathing in a helmet

GraduateIs 2001: A Space Odyssey the first movie where you can hear somebody's breathing in a helmet. I talk about Darth Vader's type of breathing; in the case of Kubrik's movie it is breathing in a space suit helmet, in Darth Vader's case in some life-support body suit's helmet. I heard that this movie...

@Walt It's very clear to me that the question is on-topic

Ahhh, gotta love questions that you get to absolutely geek out on. Glad I was able to answer that Infinity Stone question despite the fact I'm more of a DC Comics fan. :D
@MovieReel Does this fall under pointless trivia? I wanna say that it does. I know we've had stuff like first instance of product placement in a movie, but this particular question just seems to have no other purpose than, "Oh hey, I know this nifty thing that no one probably really cares about."

@MrLore Yeah, no idea why it was on hold. It's a clear picture of an actor with a speaking part, the OP tells us what movie he's in, and despite this kid looking really familiar to me, I can't find him in IMDb or an image search. Glad to see this re-opened, I considered asking about it on Meta.
We can either come up with clearer rules for actor ID or just drop the pretense, admit we hate it and shut it down. But what mainly annoyed me was the fact that no one explained why they voted to close or gave the OP some pointers on how to improve their question.

7:15 PM
@Walt I was thinking the same thing, it's a catch 22 with picture questions: if you know where it's from it's off topic trivia, if you don't it's off-topic as picture-only

7:31 PM
@MrLore Do be honest, after seeing a bunch of these questions, I have no idea what's considered off-topic and what's not there anymore

Yeah we really need to have all the actual rules written up in the on-topic or off-topic sections

I answered a question once where all they had was a picture of a woman gaping and no other info. And the question was very highly rated.

8:05 PM
And speaking of personal experience, I really don't understand this one:
http://movies.stackexchange.com/questions/23993/what-movie-is-this-clip-from/
It contained a *5 minute clip* with 2 protagonists, but wasn't just closed but deleted. *After* it was answered. Not a rep whine (I don't need it), I'm just confused about the rules sometimes.

Should answers be allowed to link out to YouTube uploads of movies? movies.stackexchange.com/a/24355/5733

9:39 PM
@MattD Good question. Though Youtube is a legal site and the movie has been there for almost 3 years, this still might not be advised (in which case I can replace it with a trailer). Anyone knows the SE rule on this issue?

10:07 PM
@Walt It's a legal site, sure, but illegal content gets uploaded and taken down pretty regularly. This one may have slipped under the radar as it's likely not an immensely popular film. To me, linking to a stream of a copyright movie is no different than linking to a torrent of it.

@MattD You have a point, and when I think about it, there's no reason to do it in ID questions, really. If it's the correct answer, a poster or a trailer would be enough to jolt the OP's memory. I'll just stick to that from now on, and in rare cases would just advise OPs to search Youtube.

10:30 PM
Erased links from a few other recent answers I posted, but there are probably more

11:02 PM
@Walt Yeah, I noticed that, unfortunately all of those are ID and now the front page is full of greyed-out stuff. ;-)
Unfortunately for the actor ID thing, there is no close reason like "it's borderline on-topic but I hate this stupid ID-this-shit crap". As long as they don't get this as a close reason or the rules get more conclusive we don't get around standing those questions now and then. ;-(

@ChristianRau Sorry about that ;)

@Walt Haha, no problem, nobody can be blamed for perfect answers on crappy questions.

Trying to think what I might block and coming up with nothing

@Walt Huh? "block"?

Why else are they greyed out?
Can't do it myself as I'll always feel I'm missing out on something

11:14 PM
@Walt Ah, that's what you're referring to, the "ignoring" (that's what it's called). Of course I still read all of them nevertheless (be it just to downvote or improve, or both), but I like to get a rough estimate of the ratio between potential crap and potentially interesting stuff by simply a short view on the questions list.

@ChristianRau Ah, I see
They're not all bad

@Walt Sure, but they're rarely (very rarely) good either.
All in all the rough (very rough, though, I admit) estimate still works.

So what's the ratio?

At the moment it isn't really favourable, but that's probably just biased by 5 of the 7 top questions being greyed out. ;-)

:) I mean in general

11:20 PM
That is extremely hard to assess, because as you said, not every ID thing is bad and not every non-ID thing is good.
But if you're asking for ID vs non-ID, I'd guess (or hope?) the ratio hasn't changed much from 1:4.

I meant their precentage, but silly me, I can just click the tags and see how many questions there are
Yeah

That being said, Guardians of the Galaxy was really big fun, even if I might have expected even more after all this fuss about it. But amazing nevertheless. And as always, the post-credit scene was worth the waiting time (hint: sarcasm, for an absolute Marvel illiterate it wasn't).

Chris Pratt can't put a foot wrong these days. P&R, Lego, GotG
Top Chef (with his wife) ;)

@Walt What's P&R?

Parks & Rec

11:29 PM
@Walt Ah, ok.

Only know Marvel through films, but I knew HowardTD because I saw the damn thing in theaters. Still feels like a weird dream.

@Walt Hmm, I only know it through dubious fan-fuss legends (and by reading the corresponding movies.se question before watching the movie).

Heck maybe it WAS a dream. Nothing could be that weird. :)
How would you compare GotG and Avengers

Strangely enough there were actually people in the theatre who knew this thing, and that in a country where comics are even less of a less of a less of an absolute nerd activity, and not nerd in the modern sense like very second person is labeled at, but real nerds as in, well, nerds! (and that from someone who hates this term).

Well, it's not just a comic book character, it's a Lucas film
So nerds should know it well

11:36 PM
@Walt Hard to say, I don't really like to compare movies in an absolute sense, even ones that share so many similarities. But all in all, I might even think Avengers wasn't the best Marvel movies so far, but I'm not sure GotG was, either. Nevetheless, the humour was great.

Asking as I haven't seen it yet. It seems more irreverent

I guess assessing a proper comparison between Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy requires a bit more time (and a less drug influenced mind for that matter).

GotG requires drugs then? (jotting down)

@Walt Oh, then I must make sure of not spoiling anything.
@Walt Haha, no, they were consumed afterwards.

Don't really mind spoilers in this case
Mainly saw Avengers to see what's so important that Whedon can't get his butt back to TV

11:41 PM
In this case I might complain that there was no actual play of the song "Footloose" that I expected so much. ;-(

@Walt No, but it was mentioned, and from then on I just hoped for a Footlose-homage.

@Walt No fear, I have a far less opinion about this site than anyone else.
Though, there were other things in the trailer that weren't in the movie.
But I don't think this is a problem so much, better than a trailer that reveals too much.

We have far too few trailer Qs

11:45 PM
A very good example from recent history was Godzilla, where they actually completely changed a scene from the movie in the trailer to not reveal too much from the movie. And I was glad they did it this way.
@Walt Well, asking for some explanation for "what goes on here" seems stupid if you could just wait another month and watch the movie. But I would also be glad about some general broad trailer question, something marketing or reception related.

Yes, definitely hate trailers that reveal too much. In fact, unless I'm really curious about a movie (or alternatively, don't really care about it and thus about spoilers), I tend to avoid them
Yes, meant broader ones about how they're actually formed

@Walt Well, I still always enjoy them (but I'm also extremely unsensitive/fearful to spoilers anyway, and often am surprised at what minor things people regard as spoilers). If I'm really interested in a movie, I can't get enough of trailers for it.

This one is interesting though
http://movies.stackexchange.com/questions/3736/what-factors-go-into-determining-what-trailers-are-played-before-movies

That being said, I'm really looking forward to Interstellar. The trailers are amazing, and while showing much (and far enough to keep me hooked), I'm still not entirely sure about what it's really gonna be.

I'm sure CN's keeping it close to the chest
Haven't fathomed much from them, but maybe I'm not up to date

11:54 PM
@Walt "much of them"? Nolan-movies or Interstellar-trailers? In the former case you certainly have something to do.

The trailers
But maybe there's a new one I haven't seen. Eh, too tired

@Walt Hmm, don't remember this question so much, but it seems I upvoted two of the answers, so I guess they're good.

It's fascinating stuff that hasn't really crossed my mind

@Walt There's 3, the first one is some kind of teaser, which just shows some common news footage of space exploration, with Mathew McConahey (too lazy too look up that name) speaking over it. The 2nd one is more elaborate and the 3rd one is rather new and shows a bit more from the actual space mission (and that Anne Hathaway is also part of the movie).

Don't tell me, Michael Caine is the janitor or something

11:59 PM
@Walt Haha, but nevertheless he has the greatest line in all the trailers so far. "we're not meant to save the world, we're meant to leave it", amazing!
