A: Implementing versioning system with MySQL

MDCCLAs stated in comments, I would store the current or effective version of a BlogStory in its respective table and keep all of its previous versions (or past states) in a separate BlogStoryVersion table. In this way, you may find this post helpful since it presents a comparable method for a simila...

Great answer.

All right, my new and shiny VtC mallet is ready for work.
good morning

@AndriyM Evening. Congrats on passing 3K!

@PaulWhite Thanks! In a way, closing is harder here than on SO. The queue is mostly empty, and someone keen to close something has to be careful so as not to be carried away. :)
Seriously, though, making the first call is often difficult. I guess I'll mostly be useful in the more obvious cases at first.

Q: What are the guidelines for reviewing?

bfavarettoAbout reviewing The review queues contain posts that possibly need further action from the community, like improvement, closure or deletion. By presenting those posts for peer-review, the system aims for higher quality content. Some user actions, such as suggesting an edit, casting a flag, clos...

@MarkSinkinson, @MarkStorey-Smith, @MartinSmith, @Ypercube, @JamesLupolt, @JackDouglas - Given that they've postponed the tube strike I think we should continue with drinkies on Fri 28. I'll make an appearance at least, so you can assume that something will be going on. Venue: The Pigs Ears, Fri 28 Aug at 7:30pm. pigs-ears.co.uk

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells And here I was assuming that the drinkies were purely virtual.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells probably can't make it tomorrow
But I'll try

1:17 PM
@Colin'tHart Oh, no. Semi-regular actual social consumption of alcoholic beverages.
@Colin'tHart Feel free to pop over to London sometime and We'll arrange something.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells I must do so. Last time I was over there was 20 years ago...

@ypercube Pity.
@Colin'tHart Well, now you've got an incentive. Come to London! Drink with the folks on The Heap!
What better reason?

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Thanks, I think I can be there around 7:45-8 PM unless something comes up with work tomorrow night.

1:33 PM
@ypercube I suspect the order is Price DESC.
What column should be used for the ordering of rows? — ypercube 7 mins ago

@JamesLupolt OK. See you there.

There must be something to resolve the ties, though.

1:54 PM
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells 'fraid I can't make this one — I've got my bosses leaving drinks this week

Q: How to recover deleted records by mistake in Mysql

Anahit DEVI am using Mysql.And by mistake I deleted very important info.Is there a way to recover or even to see the deleted info over a month ago?

Recipe for disaster:
Don't backup, delete important data, wait for a month to seek advice.
I think the only correct thing they did was the "panic":
nope and that cause a panic for me — Anahit DEV 5 hours ago

It's that time of the day when the average quality of new questions is not at its peak.

3:05 PM
@PaulWhite I think @MDCCL consistently pumps out really detailed quality answers to modeling questions I noticed the one you highlighted too.

Yes they're remarkable. There's another user doing similarly good work as well:

A: How can I design a database to track each individual's stat changes weekly, in a group?

Todd EverettYou are thinking along the right track in wanting to store information about each person. Since you want to record a history of their statistics, the best way to do that is to use another table which will keep one row for each time your record statistics with the date when they were recorded. N...

That question had four close votes when that answer arrived.
So we're quite blessed with active people right now. Some other tags we still need to find good people for.

For sure
@PaulWhite I would like to participate in this comment conversation, but I don't think that would really be helpful to the OP dba.stackexchange.com/q/112422/72091 Should I flag one of the comments, create a new chat room with @datagod and @AaronBertrand, or something else?

@Erik If it's not helpful for the OP, comment here ;)
Aaron will see it. We can invite datagod as well.

@ypercube Ok will do.

3:20 PM
Yes that. If a Heap regular/mod wasn't involved, a flag for a chat room wouldn't be far away, but the comment chain isn't overly long yet.

You could create a separate room I guess. But then, how are we going to sell the popcorns, if the action is not here? ;)

@AaronBertrand I agree with what you are saying in your comments here dba.stackexchange.com/questions/112422/… . One reason I often order in the database is because I assume SqlServer will be more efficient ordering than the application layer, as such the overall load is reduced. Is that a reasonable assumption?
Other times the client needs to have the data ordered like your Google results response so efficiency isn't always the driver of the decision like you point out

aaaaand this morning our differential backup was failing. Marvelous.

@Zane I hope you got a hefty raise when you moved to this new company 2 months ago. Based on chat here it seems like there are lots of fires to fight

@Zane Blame LiteSpeed?

3:29 PM
Don't know if I can this time. The issue is resolved though.

@Erik for that Q, you could also suggest this:

@ypercube Which question is that for?

@ypercube What I appreciate the most about your advice is how it elucidates the solution :)

@ypercube You pasted all that in chat rather than as an edit to the answer? ;)

3:35 PM
@ypercube you have my permission to add that to my answer if you so desire. :)

@Erik indeed there are but I am winning the day my friend.

keep fighting the good fight my man

Plus it's all good experience my backup skills were rusty.

@PaulWhite Done and done.

Nice.

3:45 PM
@ypercube Thanks for that edit, and the extra explanation. Initially I didn't understand why that was a good solution.

@Erik Are you aware that you can rollback any edit to a question or answer of yours that you don't like? Just checking.
Not that you'd ever get such a thing from Mr Cube.

Hmmm. In UAT we update Statistics daily. However in Prod we do not.
Methinks this might explain some of the descrepencies I've been seeing.

@PaulWhite I've seen the badge for rolling back so I assumed it was possible, but I've never explored how.

Sorry talking to myself again.

@Erik You've clicked the edited x minutes ago link sometimes to look at the revision history?

3:51 PM
For the record I'm totally fine with edits big or small that improve my answers/questions. If I ever have a question about an edit I'll post here.
@PaulWhite I just did on @ypercube 's edit

@Erik Yes I'm just checking you're familiar with this feature.
@Erik Earlier versions than current have a "rollback" link.

I see that now

@PaulWhite What screencap tool do you use that leaves that little paper rip?

@Zane SnagIt! by TechSmith

3:54 PM
That is a nice effect and the circle looks good too

I could have just linked to the FAQ, but I was feeling artistic.

Q: What is a 'rollback'?

Andrei RineaWhat is a 'rollback' on the Stack Exchange sites? I see this mentioned as being necessary to earn the cleanup badge, but I do not understand the term. For more information, see "Why can people edit my posts? How does editing work?" in the Help Center. Return to FAQ index

I just signed up for SqlSaturday Denver. Can I RSVP for the talks I want to attend now or is it a first come first serve kind of deal?

@PaulWhite I use that. I didn't know that thingy existed.

@Zane Image Tab -> Edges ribbon menu

Derp I didnt' see half of these options.
I usually just add letters and arrows.

3:57 PM
@Erik FCFS
I forget who's from where. Do we have a Denver person in The Heap? @swasheck?

Cool so I'll show up early and move fast between talks. :)
@swasheck is a Denver person I think

I wonder if he's going/organizing/speaking

@PaulWhite that looks like an acronym of ForFuCkSake

:) So it does

A few days ago I read here that he wasn't organizing this year (his choice). @ypercube lol it surely does now!

4:04 PM
@JackDouglas Oh well, never mind.

4:14 PM
Both @swasheck and @MikeFal are from Denver.
@PaulWhite @swasheck is on the board and @MikeFal is doing a powershell pre con. I'm hoping I make the cut as well.

@Zane Thanks!

@Erik I highly doubt there will be any that are full to the point that you can't go.

That is good news. Here is a link to the schedule sqlsaturday.com/441/sessions/schedule.aspx I'm planning on going to all the Application/Database dev (marigold) talks because that is what I mostly do. Is there anything else that I should attend as a smart beginner mostly working with Azure?

@Erik are you talking about the precons?
or the actual sessions

@swasheck I have to work on Friday so I can't go to the PreCons. I was thinking about the sessions on Saturday

4:25 PM
no reservations needed. show up. and learn

Plus my wife's birthday is on Friday, and she would kill me if I took her birthday off and went to a conference..... :)
@swasheck Will do. I'm looking forward to it

@johmann Are you having trouble on this question?

@swasheck what's with the to be announced sections?

@Zane no clue

Okay. I've just never seen a group post most of a schedule before.

4:41 PM
yeah. a lot of it is out of my control :)

4:51 PM
Gah I feel like crap I'm going to work from home.

We can't V, we can only C :)

Kin
@PaulWhite I meant that only .. Thanks :-)

5:14 PM
@Kin I didn't agree to do anything, just stated a fact.
I think you might have missed the fact the question is not about SQL Server

Kin
@PaulWhite Just curious how did you figure out it was Oracle ?
initially it was tagged as sql .. I assumed for sql server ...

@Kin dual would be my guess

@Kin DUAL is a special table in Oracle.

Kin
Ok .. my bad then .. Not an oracle person ... but good to know .. thanks

Q: How does the Oracle DUAL table work?

LazerSQL> desc dual Name Null? Type ----------------------------------------- -------- ---------------------------- DUMMY VARCHAR2(1) SQL> select 4*5 from dual; 4*5 ---------- 20 SQL> I find it ...

Kin
5:25 PM
@PaulWhite awesome .. thanks Paul

@Kin Your comment doesn't make much sense now. Will you remove it?

Kin
@PaulWhite deleted

Thanks.

Kin
@PaulWhite Do you think it would be a dupe of dba.stackexchange.com/q/435/8783 --> The one you pointed above ?
Since the question header says almost the same thing and the later one (the one that you pointed) has good answers
Just my thought

@Kin Originally I thought it might be, but he's not really asking about DUAL at all, so the answers would not match. He's actually asking about how Oracle handles the incompatible types 1 (numeric) and '2' (string) in the UNION.
Which, as you pointed out, is different from, say, SQL Server.
I did not know that about Oracle.

Kin
5:30 PM
Ah . ok .. Good point .. learnt something knew .. which I am not going to use in future though (Oracle)

True, but it's now hard for me to argue the question has no value :)

Kin
Retracted by Close vote as well
my
moving on ....

So I think I'll let it run it's natural course. It will probably be closed, we'll see.
@Kin Good on you. Thanks again.

5:42 PM
I concur (good point etc)

Q: In Sql Server, is there a way to check if a selected group of rows are locked or not?

ToCWe are attempting to update/delete a large number of records in a multi-billion row table. Since this is a popular table, there is a lot of activity in different sections of this table. Any large update/delete activity is being blocked for extended periods of time (as it is waiting to get locks o...

My feeling is the only solution is password recovery on the OS side, but I'm not sure so I didn't vote to migrate to another site. dba.stackexchange.com/q/112455/72091 Should this be closed/migrated?
@PaulWhite I wish I was good enough to add a valuable response to that question.

7:41 PM
Even though we know @billinkc has "no regard for disregard" chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/179?m=23693388#23693388 please disregard my question above related to password recovery

8:29 PM
there seems to be an issue with sqlfiddle
^^^^^^why does that works?

8:40 PM
@Lamak I don't know what you are trying to do but it seems to work as it should. What are you expecting?

@Erik I was expecting for it to fail, since you can't use over(partition by productid order by productid, date rows between 6 preceding and current row) in SQL Server 2008
(and it wasn't my query)

@Lamak Gotcha. I don't use partitions very often and almost never touch 2008. Looking at it logically it seemed to do the math like I expected. I probably shouldn't have replied because those aren't my strengths (2008/partitions)

no problem. It was actually explained in a comment
@JuanCarlosOropeza SQL Fiddle is actually running on 2014 server using hypervisors, and the 2008 option just means that the compatibility level will be set to 100 and for some reason SQL Server uses the order by even though it shouldn't when compat. lvl is set to 100. — jpw 5 mins ago

8:59 PM
Compatibility mode just means that it will use that version's quirky behaviour with regard to plans and crap. It's why you can set compatibility mode to sql server 2000 and use the date datatype
That blew my mind as well as I assumed it'd keep you in check
before you wrecked yourself

Because being confused about COMPATIBILITY_LEVEL is bad for your health

@billinkc Yeah, I didn't know how sqlfiddle was actually managing the database engine selection

9:33 PM
@billinkc nope. sql server even loads the gun for you to shoot yourself. all of the protection is how they lock the trigger

9:49 PM
@Lamak Just to confirm what you've been told: sqlfiddle.com/#!3/9eecb7/4254
I didn't know that either, by the way

really enjoying Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats ... S.O.B.
@mmarie whats up

@swasheck ?
hi

just saying hi

oh ok.
ooh, can you test somethign for me?

samething @billinkc wants me to test?

the link to our schedule
i thought bill sent it to you

yeah

the link no longer works for me
i want to confirm with someone else that it seems to be locked down now

> There are no event for you to manage. If this is a mistake, email webmaster@sqlsaturday.com.
so ... screw them

10:06 PM
ha
ok
i'm done now. It's time to go drink margaritas and celebrate my friend getting older

pass seems to have a lot of data and application issues for being a community of ... developers
i have offspring turning 10 today

well, don't give them a margarita

i'll get them one (as a nice gesture) and then consume it on my own (as a measure of responsibility)

good plan
