@MikeFal Huffman's hot sauce packed for summit.

5:38 AM
@PaulWhite I have your green chile sauce packed up as well.

5:52 AM
@PaulWhite We still need to catch up for beers at some point. Probably a couple of weeks away yet I'd guess - when are you back?

6:16 AM
@MikeFal Awesome, thanks. When do you arrive in Seattle? And which hotel are you in?

Sunday afternoon, Sheraton

@SimonRigharts Um, well I'm going straight on to Las Vegas after the two Summits so I'll have to check ... brb
@MikeFal Ah cool, I'm in the Sheraton too, arriving Saturday night.

@PaulWhite So yeah ... sometime in the new year then? :p

Yeah, I'm doing SQL Saturday in Portland. Should be fun

@SimonRigharts Back Saturday 15 Movember
I'm much keener to get into WLG when the weather's nicer :)
Seattle's going to feel like flying back into mid-winter though :-/

@PaulWhite well, it was related to this answer, but before the OP added the resolution bit.
My thought was that for such simple selects the estimates could be good enough to match the actuals.

We have a question where at least the OP makes a valid suggestion:

Q: Overlapping indexes

StackoverflowuserI have two non-clustered indexes on one of my dbs and their definition are: CREATE NONCLUSTERED INDEX [NC_Index1] ON [dbo].[anyTable] ( [X] ASC, [Y] ASC, [Z] ASC ) INCLUDE (A , B, C) and CREATE NONCLUSTERED INDEX [NC_Index2] ON [dbo].[anyTable] ( [X] ASC, ...

Q: Improving my answer after it's been accepted

James AndersonIf my answer is accepted and then someone else adds an answer that isn't as good but has a few points that I didn't have should I add those points to my answer? Feels like I would be stealing their ideas/work.

Q: how do i join two different tables in mysql

Vivek Kannathis is table1 id name m1 m2 m3 total 1 raj 10 10 10 30 2 ram 60 60 60 180 3 kumar 70 70 70 210 4 kanna 50 50 50 150 5 vivek 64 64 91 200 5 vivek 90 90 90 270 this is table2 id name mark1 mark2 mark3 101 vivek 78 78 ...

JNK
yeah it's not
he's matching nicknames to full names
which is turrible

1 hour later…
2:29 PM
@JNK And even if there are some hidden columns that provide order for the 2 tables, mysql does not have window functions, so joining them will have horrible efficiency.

anybody have a great way to convert a string formatted as 214000 into a DATETIME value 21:40:00 ? I can use SUBSTRING etc, but I'm hoping there is a nice canonical way for SQL Server to do the work for me. Much like CONVERT(DATETIME, '20141031', 112) returns a datetime of 2014-10-31 00:00:00

JNK
2:35 PM
don't believe there's a built in method for this
and you probably want the TIME datatype
if you look at the CONVERT msdn page there's no options without colons

Hello All

JNK
hi

what's up @Kin

Kin
nothing much .. just saying Hi ...
anyone coming to PASS summit ?

JNK
:(

2:58 PM
nope

@JNK thanks, that's the conclusion I came to.

@JNK eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeewwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

@swasheck I will see you in 5 days!

@MaxVernon doesn't 108 do that?

indeed

2:59 PM
@swasheck when do you get in?

@mmarie i'm getting there early. sunday afternoon. my wife's coming with me and leaving thursday morning early. we've never been to seattle so we're trying to take a little time to get away from kids and such.

@swasheck fun! I get there on Tuesday. But I'm going to crash an MVP party that night because Bill put me down as his + 1 :-)

well that's fun. i'm not cool enough to crash any parties

I'm not cool. I just Know People ™
and by people, i mean person.

well - i had my mvp +1 last year at summit when i got to race a car

3:05 PM
yeah, that looked pretty cool

JNK
@swasheck get checked!
> 9 out of 10 proctologist DBAs agree - TIME requires a colon.

Someone walked behind me and meowed. I was confused until i looked up and realized that the girl sitting across from me is dressed as a cat today, and that was just her coworker saying hello.

wtf. people are ... wow ...

I am dressed as a 404 costume not found today.

I think I have just found my most convoluted query of my career:
1. stored procedure that builds dynamic query to be called by sp_executesql
2. The first part of that dynamic query: 'SELECT TOP ' + CAST(@rows_to_return as varchar) + '...
3. Earlier in the procedure found: SET @rows_to_return = (SELECT dbo.fn_get_purge_max_rows_to_return())
This coming from a vendor that is supposed to be a leader in their industry...?!!??!

separation of duties?

4:37 PM
So many of these come out of conversations we have on the Heap.

5:34 PM
Free Pizza!

@Zane ?

I got free pizza from some sort of recruiter group who's trying to get management to use them.

nice work

I didn't do anything for it. Which is what makes it sooo great.
I don't get this comment.

6:00 PM
@Zane I suppose they mean to have an indexed view on SELECT COUNT(*) FROM table

6:10 PM
@ypercube seems a tad bit silly.

I can't discern the melody from text. What's the song.

not sure it's your cup of tea, but it's "Dark Horses"

6:26 PM
Band or song?

song - Switchfoot is the band

I can't believe SSIS still doesn't have a native adapter for SharePoint. Madness.

6:41 PM
@Zane OData
but the sharepoint source and destination out on codeplex are nice. i have used both.

dear symantec:

Symantec hears ya',symantec don't care.
So I need ~6 hours of entertainment.

@MikeFal symantec dont give a fsck
@MikeFal @billinkc on a unicycle should get you halfway there

@swasheck Is @billinkc in DIA? Didn't think so. Try again.

For you, @MikeFal

6:48 PM
@MikeFal oh. so now you start giving requirements. jeez. what are you, a developer?????

If I watched trolololo guy for 6 hours, I might shoot myself. I'll at least shoot someone else.

go to the bar and find someone with whom you can get into a drinking contest. you'll pass out and the time will fly

That has potential

@mmarie that's what I'm using now.

7:34 PM
anyone know a good reason to UPDATE STATISTICS ... WITH NORECOMPUTE ??? Seems a bit dumb to do that to ALL statistics in ALL databases on EVERY instance, right? (background - we have a custom stored proc that updates statistics nightly and uses this option - it wasn't written by me!)

@MaxVernon how much data do you have and how volatile is it?

that very much varies from table to table and instance to instance, but suffice it to say this instance I'm looking at is Sharepoint.
and it's pretty volatile

iirc, sharepoint has its own management and maintenance stuff and messing with statistics is not good. i'd make it an exception to your maintenance tasks
@MaxVernon also, what's the sample rate? default? fullscan?

@swasheck its FULLSCAN

holy cow.
so you're swatting flies with bazookas?

7:41 PM
by default, would you agree turning off auto_update_statistics is a Bad Thing™?
@swasheck something like that

@MaxVernon generally. again, not sure about scarepoint because it's its own beast

thanks!

@swasheck @MaxVernon Yeah every query in SharePoint is rigged to run a certain way (not necessarily the best way)

@MaxVernon for huge data sets, with moderate volatility, i'd look into tf 2371

Query hints, MAXDOP 1 at the instance level, auto create stats off on the db, etc

7:43 PM
@James yeah. i really hate managing sharepoint

You'll get different answers from different people (even within MS) about whether auto update stats should be on for SharePoint
@swasheck Me too
@swasheck ... but the nice thing about SharePoint is that if it performs terribly, most people just think "Well OK it's SharePoint"

@James hahahahah. yeah. we have the newsgator addins as well, which makes performance that much worse

@swasheck I wonder what Glenn Berry thinks of that. Didn't he used to work for newsgator?

@James he did - and i've never bothered asking him ;)

i'm on the most boring conference call ever
right now there is an argument about a syslog server

8:13 PM
Happy Halloween guys hope you have fun and get as drunk as I will.

@Zane Ditto!

Q: General database questions for a beginner

Benzle1) Is a database just like another data type like the data frame in R, or a list? 2) Is SQL the language for interacting with the (data type) database? 3) I can use MS SQL Management Studio to make a new DB, is this similar to using MS Access? 4) Once made, how do I host/upload my DB and then co...

@AaronBertrand oops

c'mon. that's an awesome question.

if I reopen it are you going to answer?

8:21 PM

@Zane agreed

this would complicate MySQL so much more
