@ypercube You're both right. wBob is right that CTEs behave that way today; you're right that this depends on implementation and may well change in the future. There is at least one active Connect item for this. By the way, wBob is a good (and smart) guy.

@PaulWhite Ah, thnx.

morning party people

morning (or something)
@JNK remember this one? Just had a reason to make some further testing.
It turns out that you can get different query plans depending on the order of columns in the column list.
I did not think that was possible but you know.... it's XML, anything can happen.

I vaguely recall that
it was my last big thing at my last job

12:35 PM
@AaronBertrand you around?
do you have anti-virus software on your mac? My former employer is requiring it on macs to remote in, so my spouse needs one. Just curious if you have one.

2 hours later…
2:48 PM
FWIW, I don't have virus software on my mac. Or any machine I own for that matter
You should get her a VM on the box so she has a work sandbox to isolate any dumb crap the work requires from her native machine
The Cisco vpn forces all the traffic to go through the work network, even for web traffic so I'd run a work VM for just work things and general usage, I'd still have my host OS to "connect to whatever I darn well please, thank you very much net nanny"

JNK
are macs advanced enough to support viruses? I thought it would be like getting a deadlock in Mongo or something.

I've reimaged my mac to just run mangodb

man I hate product investigations

Researching whether a product is suitable?

@billinkc I don't either we never have. They made it a new requirement, they make sure the machine has anti virus software in order for the remote connection to work.

And they got it right for a mac? That'd be semi-impressive
Moo no longer supports the text-o-matic business cards. Pity, I rather enjoyed that style (allowed you to have random text printed on the backs of cards)

@billinkc They sure did

JNK
@billinkc yeah

3:45 PM
@bluefeet How do they check?

@ypercube Not exactly sure but they couldn't log in this morning until the software was installed and a scan was completed

3:59 PM
Until what software was installed? No, no anti-virus on any Mac here. Agree with Bill - use a VM

4:16 PM
@AaronBertrand We had to install anti virus software on the Mac here at home before the remote connection would work.

4:32 PM
@bluefeet got that, but what software? Was it looking for specific software, or does it have a known whitelist of anti-virus apps?

@AaronBertrand Sorry, I missed that. Maybe it has a whitelist, I'm not exactly how it works but it refused a connection until we installed an anti virus and ran a scan. I was just wondering if you ran an anti virus on your machine. We installed sophos to get the connection to work
Obviously I've not been clear, I'll blame my pain meds. Just forget it. ;p

Does anyone want to migrate this to workplace?

Q: What are the dangers of non-IT managers using improper database terminology

Brians BoutiqueMy immediate manager above me is not an IT person. She has obviously read a wiki page or two on SQL Server and/or database theory. Many times during discussions she will use terms like "Normalized" or "Inner Join" for no reason or in the wrong context. I try and correct "Actually what you are ...

@MaxVernon Flag ;)

@ypercube I'm a bit reluctant to flag:

OK, I did it for you ;)
Questions cannot be migrated to the Workplace without a moderator's intervention.

@ypercube that goes for any site that is not SO, correct? In my image, I asked for it to be moved to SO or Sharepoint.se and that flag was declined. Perhaps we should have a flag reason "move to another site: ________" that accepts anything other than the list of sites in the "close question -> off topic -> move to" list?

Yes, but it's so rare. How often do we have questions that should be in other sites (not SO)?

5:53 PM
I guess not all that often.

I didn't even know there is a sharepoint site!

lol, no doubt. There are so many sites now in the network that it is very hard to know all of em!

Have you tried the Sims? — Kermit 5 secs ago

@MaxVernon Don't let one declined flag stop you from advancing to [badge:Marshal] ;)

6:02 PM
@ypercube cheers!
@Kermit lolol.

You can compensate by following Kermit and flagging his comments.

@ypercube I tried duckduckgo.com/?q=!dbasx%20kermit%20boom! but got nothing

I don't think the search works for comments.

@MaxVernon why would you want me to explode

@Kermit Because VERTICA!

6:08 PM
@MaxVernon you're just jealous of the massive parallel processing power

@Kermit lol... that's what she said.

@MaxVernon she got results fast

lol
where the mind rolls on Friday afternoon, it boggles, well, the mind.

6:24 PM
Whoa, I should be getting way more than 10 rows back... 5 minutes of furiously evaluating my join conditions to realize I have a TOP 10 in my query. I think that's a sign I should take a nap

@MaxVernon they look 12

JNK
6:49 PM
@billinkc done that

7:00 PM
You had a nap? You sonofa...

JNK
oh no I never nap
I have 2 little kids and am away from home 11 hours a day

"You are taking a nap because I need a nap" always worked for me

@billinkc Wait, "You are taking a nap because I need a nap"?

Yes. I had no problem telling them when they were 2-4ish that they were taking a nap because I needed one.
My nap requirement was likely due to them wearing me out with their deteriorating behavior. But telling a child they need a nap is a sure fire way to get a response of "no, I don't"

@billinkc Haha, indeed! I'm slow tonight.

Have children yourself?

JNK
@billinkc yes it is

7:28 PM
Nope, only a nephew and a niece, 6 1/2 and almost 2, my sister's

My 4yo can will himself awake
We were driving to his grandparents' house pretty late and he stayed awake for the prospect of presents. He normally is out cold by 8 and he stayed up in a quiet car in the dark until like 11pm through force of will.

Niece and nephews are the best, you can have as much or as little of them as you wish and then you can walk away
@JNK They are buggers like that, aren't they

@AndriyM Do you plan to have kids?

@ypercube Well, I love children, but I'm not ready to have a family for some other reasons.
