Q: How to set MSDN in order to open on a certain version of Microsoft SQL Server?

VaradaIn a network, there are certain different installed versions of Microsoft SQL Server, starting with 2005, 2008 and 2008 R2. Is there a specific option of MSDN that can fix the opening of new pages on the version of SQL Server that is being worked on? For instance, can I set MSDN to open on Micr...

I wanted to flag this as blatantly off topic because the OP basically wants to know how to load a certain version of SQL Server documentation in MSDN webpages. Since it has been here for so long and has 7 up-votes I figured I would ask here before flagging

@swasheck Very nice. Perhaps a bit longer than I was expecting, but still good. I completed the tidy-up by editing the question. Bounty award in 12h.

@PaulWhite yeah. so i kinda got carried away with the experimentation.

It's ok.

i do love the topic
though i may only be moderately proficient
@PaulWhite it's a pity you're not going to summit this year. i still owe you a drink, or two.

I'm sure we'll run into each other again at some stage.

perhaps. you roll with the smarties and the mvps. i'm ... i'm a plebe

@MichaelGreen you are too diligent at reviewing

@dezso It has become a habit to review the queues last thing before retiring.

@MichaelGreen I got to the review, had 6 items in the First Posts queue - did a slowish edit on the first, then proceeded to the second (involving a quick check of the MySQL docs) - the other 4 were gone by then :)

I'm not sure if there's anything else to say to this guy
when i remove "order by" in inner query it work on mysql! — Masood Afrashteh 1 min ago

@dezso A couple of them had significant activity already so, to me, it was an easy decision.

12:35 PM
@ypercube I've thrown my two cents into the ring.

@MichaelGreen Thanx. If that squery gives different resuts, then it would be a bug. But I doubt it.

Q: SQL Server Outer Apply Returning 1st column

CDCI'm hitting some weird behavior on a table valued function when used with OUTER APPLY. I have a simple inline function that returns some simple calculations based on a row in another table. When the input values for the TVF are hard-coded scalars, there is no row returned. When I take the same...

Hey, I'm a SQL Server user, but we mostly use EntityFramework (an ORM) and I don't really understand how SQL Server works internally (I did take a DB course once, so I know what a block nested loop join or a hash join is, and I know all the axioms and what a query optimizer is, but not how any of that applies to SQL Server)
So I'm looking for a book recommendation for a book that will help me translate my academic understanding and my real life use cases and help me understand what I should rewrite, what indexes I should have, how to tune performance and how to write idiomatic, fast and correct SQL Server code.
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated :)

@BenjaminGruenbaum That's going to need more than one book. My favourites follow:

Sure, just order them by importance and what I should read first :) I'm not looking to become a DBA, I'm mostly just interested from a hobby point of view.
@PaulWhite anything else?

Too late now, you're just getting a list as I think of them and find the links :)
Those two would make a good start.
If you want something more basic on the T-SQL side:

Thanks! I'll start with these two and move on, I'll buy them on Monday when in the office :)

No worries.

3:09 PM
Would this room be a good place to ask questions about topics in the book as I encounter them or is that sort of question asking considered bad etiquette here?

3:21 PM
@BenjaminGruenbaum Most everything is on-topic in this general room. Very extended discussion about a particular topic might best be handled in a dedicated room. We can look at that on a case-by-case basis though.

Thanks, will keep you updated :)

Please note my revised question that contains answers to your questions. I know personal correspondence is frowned upon by dba - but I hope they can indulge me when I say - "your response is the most proficient and helpful addition I've ever received to any question, ever" - so a huge heartfelt thanks for all your effort thus far, I'm truly humbled and appreciative! Since this is a compilation post, it should probably be a community wiki. — Andriy M 43 secs ago

@AndriyM Grey area. In some ways, yes, and I generally do that myself. OTOH if someone puts effort and time into turning comment answers into an answer, why shouldn't they be rewarded? Voters will decide, perhaps.

6:52 PM
I think I'd just like to see more answered questions. I don't much care whether they are from comments, marked CW or not. I guess I just don't have strong feelings either way. Others might.

Q: Why is my SQL Server query behaving differently on UPDATE than on SELECT?

Chris SchiffhauerI've written a SQL Server query that updates records to have a sequential number after partitioning on a field. When I run it as a SELECT statement, everything looks great: DECLARE @RunDetailID INT = 448 DECLARE @JobDetailID INT SELECT @JobDetailID = [JobDetailID] FROM [RunDetails] WHERE [RunDe...
