Q: Integrating Postgres/GIS data in a MSSQL environment without generating 'data islands'

ZQLGood day, Currently I'm facing an scenario in which a GIS expert is planning on starting to integrate mapping services for several departments within the organization I work for. I handle around 40 mid-sized MSSQL databases and so far its been a very painful process to try and unify the data so...

interesting problem, has anyone already seen such?
From the PostgreSQL side, there is AFAIK no mature solution

I so love science
I wish SO would recognize legitimate shitty questions and just shut them down

Q: SSIS - how to access ADP payroll system

user1878422how do i access the ADP payroll system using SSIS Is there any ODBC available? can someone provide any steps we can use? thanks

@billinkc interesting, my first reaction while reading 'if it's a boy or a girl' was 'but the left-hand-side is a girl and the other one is a boy, most probably'
bonus question: do I have a degree in biology?

@billinkc The first question here is why does he need to access them. we use 2008 R2 for ADP here. They don't like people touching their stuff and it can void the service agreement if you do. Not as bad a MS Dynamics, though

For the company I'm working for, it's entirely a SaaS so I assume as an admin you can get prepackaged reports and that's it. Didn't realize they had an on-premises verison

@billinkc or just ask me and I can handle it

But I like to bitch
because I am one
beat y'all to that one

2:48 PM
@billinkc Yeah, ours is in house. Used to track clock ins/outs for Drs
Which then ties into insurance verification so its very critical to keep it up. The only thing I'm allowed to do is manage the backup/maintenance of it. No indexing, nothing.

3:05 PM
I love getting put on the 'on call roatation'. I'm the only DBA, im 'on call' 24/7/365. Now I jsut have to carry yet another phone.

what's the other pager for? In case IIS goes down?

We share the rotation with .NET/AS400 team. I'm on call all the time, just now im the first responder.
We need to have each system have their own rotation, ideally
Less people that get woken up at 2am

Or stabilize stuff so it doesn't go off
Which doesn't happen until management allocates time to solve such problems
My first post college job involved a pager. They sure knew how to bend an eager young grad over. So, since then I have been vehemently anti-pager
So many places that didn't have official support come up with the idea of devs carrying support pagers but when I start asking the painful questions I learned about, they usually backed off

@billinkc Yeah, it's tough. Many problems need management approval to resolve and that can be difficult getting their approval

Now you have us essentially working 24x7 instead of our standard 5x8 - have you given any thought to remuneration? If the pager does go off, what's the expectation? There is no SLA in place. If I'm up all night, do you expect me to come in the next day? etc.

3:19 PM
@billinkc Yeah, that's a good point. Thankfully, my boss is VERY cool about that so if I'm up til 2am (like the past 3 nights), she makes sure to pay it forward a bit and let me come in late the next day or leave early. I know i'm incredibly lucky to have that

Or at least track it and bank it. The Financial services institute, I got a call on Christmas Eve while I was at a family function because the website was "slow"
"Really? People are buying mutual funds to tuck them under the tree? How do you know it's slow." Uhh, they (a person in marketing) just said it was.

@billinkc 'its slow', very descriptive. I ask 'how slow' and the response is usually 'i dont know, it's jsut slower'.
Go to their PC and there's crapware everywhere and 5 instances of chrome open

@AaronBertrand the confusion is that stats_column_id matches table order, not stats order for stats that support an index. in "theory" the stats_column_id should match hash_order of index_columns (if i understand BOL correctly)
@JamesLupolt AHHHH!!! MOTHERLAND!
@ypercube do you have access to a sql server 2014 instance?

@swasheck Yes, but not at the moment.

@AaronBertrand i met him in ABQ. he was a dick

3:27 PM
Only in my laptop and it's at home.

@ypercube hm. ok. send this to your home laptop
select
	schema_name = sh.name,
	table_name = t.name,
	stats_name = s.name,
	c.name,
	s.stats_id,
	s.auto_created,
	s.has_filter,
	s.filter_definition,
	s.is_incremental,
	spi.*
from sys.stats s
join sys.stats_columns sc
    on s.object_id = sc.object_id
    and s.stats_id = sc.stats_id
join sys.columns c
    on s.object_id = c.object_id
    and sc.column_id = c.column_id
join sys.tables t
	on s.object_id = t.object_id
join sys.schemas sh
	on t.schema_id = sh.schema_id
cross apply sys.dm_db_stats_properties_internal(s.object_id,s.stats_id) spi
of particular note is the spi.*
it's undocumented

@swasheck Who was a dick?

@ypercube but if you like nested sets, you can decipher that DMV and get a feel for how incremental stas are merged

@swasheck I have a 2014 instance spun up on my surafe pro, want to to try for you?

da
@KrisGruttemeyer you dont have to do it on my account.

3:31 PM
Yeah, he thinks pretty highly of himself. The other half is awesome, though.

i have 2014 humming along just fine
@MikeFal she seems it

@swasheck I'm bored. sys.dm_db_stats_properties_internal undocumented?

@KrisGruttemeyer @ypercube yes. it's undocumented. and you have to have a partitioned table for it to seem like it makes any sense

Oh wow, ran it on a DB that actually has data on it, very interesting
@swasheck No partitioning here, unfortunately

if table is not partitioned, you're just as well to stick with documented sys.dm_db_stats_properties(s.object_id,s.stats_id) sp

3:34 PM
Silly Q; can I partition a table in Express?

@ypercube lmgtfy
(no)
but you can buy Dev ... or download the Eval

4:23 PM
important research coming out of Exeter

4:52 PM
@billinkc I would need your expertise to resolve the SSIS problem you helped me with yesterday. What would be the cost?
That's my SSIS questioner from yesterday where they couldn't form a coherent question

One MILLION dollars!
...is still probably not enough.

I think that the fact that he is willing to speak with @billinkc is a high enough cost

verdad

@billinkc bwahahaha
100 bucks an hour.
And you've already spent 2 yesterday.

ah, you and your somewhat random spanish words. When are you visiting?, I'll take you around and you can impress people with your vast knowledge

4:58 PM
@dezso PostgreSQL is pretty mature as a back-end (the technology was actually developed on this platform in the 1980s), and PostGIS extends it further. Various OSS front-ends are available (QGIS, GRASS) and IIRC most of the commercial GIS frontends (e.g. ArcGIS) have PostgreSQL adaptors. It's lacking an obvious starting point for vendor support, but I believe there are outfits around who can support it.

I will already impress them with my lovely blond locks. They'll think I'm a deity

@billinkc Don't forget to wear your Lava-lava.

Of course. My blinding white skin would surely impress them

@billinkc diet-y?, as in "you are on a diet"?

No idea what you're talking about

5:00 PM
@billinkc but yes, they might confuse you with a cthulhu or another lovecraftian descendant
I will explain them though, that it's somehow normal to have that kind of face and use a skirt, don't worry

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells thanks, but the truth is that I know postgres a bit (working with it daily since more than 8 years) - what I think there is no real way from the postgres side to connect that DB to SQL Server
a new yper on the board:

@dezso I should have copyrighted the name.

@dezso No. I think you would have to build an ETL process to exchange data between the PG and SQL Server DBs.

5:16 PM
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells which probably defeats the OPs (actually the other guy's) aims

@dezso It compromises them but a workable solution is probably possible to implement if OP backs off the purism.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells that's true, I think it involves some non-DB component
which might make writing queries from SQL Server against the geo data impossible, but the applications could still run without even noticing
of course, it would be nice to have a cover-all FDW on either side

Steve with Windows Security just called. My computer is at risk!
I guess asking what my Operating System was was too much, they hung up

Q: Sql Server Table Normalization 800+ columns per table

AnotherdreamI have been put in charge or creating an ETL that will take data we receive from Home loan servicers. @billinkc oh god you'd better give him your social security number quick!

I got them going for 11 minutes so that fine.
I like to drop hints that I'm messing with them. They want me to run eventvwr - read me back what the run menu says: Oh, it's eventviewer
Then when we look at the warnings anderror codes, I rattle off issues that a consumer would not have. SQL Server has been up for N hours, etc

@bluefeet where to start....

I closed the tab, that's where I started

5:56 PM
I took my best shot at shaving that corpse before VtC

Q: In VBscript how do you call the first element of objFolder object type

AnotherdreamThis is my first post and it is related to Vbscript. I am brand new to it, and I was able to hobble together two pieces of code I found on this site to get it to accomplish what I want, however I don't understand one section of the code and I'd like help if possible. Please see the code below, al...

Sorry, VBScript
I wrote ETL stuff in 2002 using VBScript (via DTS). I don't miss that in the slightest

At my last job I worked with some VBScript ETL that failed randomly on any machine that had more than one processor

The only safe way to ensure VBScript works correctly is on a machine with zero processors
Wait, you move around somewhat job-wise, right? That means within the past year or two, in the wild there is VBScript still running

@billinkc Yes, this was only a little over a year ago

I believe the proper Southern term is Jesus wept

It was some code that probably dated from somewhere between 2002-2005
It wasn't terribly important anymore and I didn't want to rewrite or figure out how to make it thread-safe, so I just set it to retry until it succeeded
That project was actually rather fun. It involved migrating an old SQL Server 2005 to 2012 after figuring out how it was gathering data from Oracle, Postgres, Access, Excel, Informix, SSIS, and probably some things I'm forgetting
It had close to 200 Agent jobs that did various ETL tasks, and no one knew what most of them were for anymore

6:46 PM
In our standup, the QA manager was talking about how the validation tests we wrote differ from the ones the remote team created which further differed from what the consultants wrote
It's... interesting.
The other dev and I shared a look while the PM was all Oh good, glad that's going well
No, no when an IT person says something's interesting, it's ... nevermind

@ypercube there's something satisfying about being the binding vote

You can always buy a Developer edition. It's rather cheap. And it's exactly for what you want to do, development ;) — ypercube 50 secs ago
... said the guy with Express on his laptop.

;)

@swasheck hammer feeling

Do you need/want developer edition?

7:20 PM
@billinkc No, not really.
I work on Postgres now.

@ypercube which version?

the latest, 9.3

Two hours later no response from OP
It sounds like you have mismatching data types to me. — Zane 2 hours ago
So I'm moving on with my life.

Good man

@ypercube How is it?

7:24 PM
Postgres? I like it. has a lot of nice features, which we don't really use.
(The devs and the boss decided to use an ORM for most of the job.)
So, sometimes, I'm the guy who has to spend 30 minutes to figure out how to write in the Python-ORMish language, a query so it is tranformed to a SQL query that I could write blind folded ;)

@ypercube Is there some sort of anti star I can give for this comment?
I don't understand this question at all

My best answer of all time.
@ypercube I don't get twitter so I had to use my phone.
Someone downvoted me! What?!
Someone must use delete instead of backspace...

I was downvoted, too!
@Zane I hope you saw my answer because it's really going down now.

You should make yours visable for a moment.
haha

And me going away. See you tomorrow (or MOnday)

Monday for shore.

fershur, dood

7:51 PM
@Zane @ypercube I had to clean up your answers

aaaww

@bluefeet ouch.

yeah I'm awful

I wanted to delete myself. pissed

there was a reason why I had to handled them

7:53 PM
Flagged?

I assume someone flagged them

@bluefeet What?!
Mines a legitimate answer.

@ypercube yes

But Zane's answered the question "How to put it in one line".
The question needs closing I think

done
@zane you really didn't want me to leave that there
I'll say that the DV was because of a flag

7:55 PM
I could totally eat some DV's that answer is both informative and hilarious.
Geez where's @Kermit he would have gotten a kick out of that bit.

There are some flags that carry severe penalties. Neither one of you wanted that

Meh. Are they network wide or just SO?

You're mistaking me for someone who cares enough.

Lol

yeah, I know you don't care

We're rebels @bluefeet.

you are so dangerous

Lol
Yeah me and my gifs go where we want to go.

I was going to patch your gif into my answer

@billinkc for that same question?

Yeah

8:02 PM
@bluefeet Anyway, I don't really mind the deletion. It was just a fun moment

That ate all my magical unicorn points!

I'll remember that y'all don't care in the future

-3 is the threshold where it deletes
right?

there are no auto-deletes

@billinkc You can still do. It's on hold, not deleted.

8:03 PM
Oh, I thought stuff got autodeleted if it hit some negative threshold

@billinkc I may have snuck my gif in there for you ;)
If you still want to use it...

@billinkc No. Certainly not questions.

That said, I know you can't specify what flags were filed but I'm trying to understand from a general perspective what flag could be logged that'd result in severe penalties. Spam? Nope. Not an Answer. It seemed to address the question. Other - shrug so we're left with Offensive, abusive or hate speech: contains content that a reasonable person would deem inappropriate for respectful discourse

@bluefeet I care, don't go mixing me with those anti systemic rebels

@billinkc spam & offensive carry additional penalties

8:06 PM
@Lamak Boo, get an anti-star.

we should have those

So it can't be spam since it wasn't an advertisement. Offensive though? Perhaps I'm just far too callous to exist...
@Lamak You probably want the dislike button on FB too

nah, a downvote button would be nice

I know, take my things to meta

People have different perspectives on "offensive" posts.

8:10 PM
Which is why we need people like you and Jack as moderators

yeah, people have different sensitivities @billinkc. For instance, I find your avatar offensive, and your often hate speech....but well, I have to manage ;-)

That's meant in sincerity btw

I'd be interested to see if my flag was followed up on.

@Zane what flag?

@bluefeet I thought my answer was flagged.

8:12 PM
@Zane both of your answers were flagged.

@Zane and got deleted since

I handled both of them
Well actually @ypercube handled the one on his answer when he deleted it

Wierd. This is a process that I don't understand.

@Zane your comment made it sound as if you had also flagged something

I stepped in because the flag was wrong on both of the answers. So I needed to clear them

8:14 PM
@Lamak Nah. I don't flag much.

I figure, I just said it to explain why @bluefeet asked "what flag?"

No sir I don't like it.

My second most voted answer at dba is a joke.
Good that it wasn't flagged.

hahaha I remember that.

yup, I'm horrible

Q: What database technologies do big search engines use?

rkosegiDoes anybody knows how Google or Yahoo perform searches for keywords against very very huge amounts of data? What sort of database or technologies do they employ for this? It takes few milliseconds, but they have more than a billion pages indexed.

@bluefeet It's not your fault SO is packed to the gills with easily offended obnoxious people.

But that joke-answer did also relieved some tension. There was huge controversy between that NimChimpsky guy and Aaron + some other heapsters.

@ypercube I remember

It's also not your fault that there isn't much transparency. It just blam it's gone.
@mmarie would not be happy with this report in the slightest.
I love how everytime someone writes a shitty query that goes slow they immediately think "it just needs to be in PowerPivot"
PowerPivot is not a magic wand.
Alright I'm out of here.
