New meta is up - meta.stackexchange.com

8 hours later…
9:52 AM
@PaulWhite Actually I find its got a negative value-add. It's quicker to type out the identifiers than to fight with Intellisense and undo all its crap.
Having a programmer's editor with decent macro and search/replace facilities to hand is also quite useful.

@FreshPhilOfSO I applied some edits; you should have plenty of rep to do that too.

@Zane Agree, but I realised that only after reading @JNK's comment.

As a general you don't want to give you password to anything out on the internet. It's not helpful to the question in anyway possible leaves you vulnerable and if nothing else makes you look bad. — Zane 10 secs ago
I originally used incompetent instead of bad but it felt like I was picking on the stupid kid.
You should always prefix the schema anyway. Sooooo...... — Zane 14 secs ago

A: Resetting Primary key without deleting truncating table

BharathirajaYes you can do things like below update table set Pk_Col=4 where Some_Other_Col='D' if you have foreign key mean you have drop all the constraints or remove all data from foreign key column and execute the above statement

JNK
12:56 PM
that makes me crazy as well

@JNK I know.
It's like date formating people just don't seem to grasp that it's better to let the computer handle that.

So, meta.SE is no more, now we have a meta.SO

@Lamak we have both

yup, wrote that the wrong way

SO now has it's own meta like all sites do - but now the MSE is for Stack Exchange - network wide stuff

it was about time

@Zane I answered but have no interest in making the question better. :-)

2:40 PM
I hadn't realized before that the meta rep is the same as the rep on the parent site

@Lamak yes and your MSE rep is the rep you had before on MSO

@Lamak that's the way it should have always been
In fact I think your rep on the new MSE should be your network-rep wide rep, and again not affected by votes and other activity there. But where the hell would I propose that and not get shot to smithereens

Wait, so my SO rep will now be meta.so rep as well? so I can get 50k rep on meta, and have the same rep on SO ?

@AaronBertrand they had to turn off the meta notifications that mods get when a new question is posted - we were getting slammed last night

@bluefeet I'll bet

2:42 PM
@bluefeet I realized that. But what happens with votes on the meta site?, do they affect meta rep?

@Kermit yes, MSO rep = parent site rep

@AaronBertrand I think so too

@AaronBertrand wow that's dumb

@Lamak no, only on the main meta.stackexchange site

@Lamak Meta Stack Exchange?
@Lamak Meta Stack Overflow doesn't effect rep

2:42 PM
@Kermit it's how it has been here - go look at your rep on meta.dba.stackexchange

@bluefeet But it doesn't affect the meta rep either?

@AaronBertrand it was awful on the iOS app

@bluefeet I finally installed that thing. Not terribly impressed.

@AaronBertrand my only issue is that you can theoretically earn all your rep from meta.so now

@Lamak on Meta Stack Exchange it works like normal sites but on Meta Stack Overflow up/down votes don't impact rep

2:43 PM
@AaronBertrand wait, that doesn't seem right. I get that meta rep is the same as the parent site, but what @Kermit said is wrong

@Kermit huh?

@Kermit no you can't

@Kermit no you can't, you don't earn rep from meta.so

you don't get rep on Meta sites - unless it is now Meta Stack Exchange

only meta.stackexchange (and you can't use that rep for anything anywhere else)

2:44 PM
@AaronBertrand OHHH
Okay I feel better now

@bluefeet did everyone on meta.so just earn the yearling badge? My profile says 5 years 2 months, I shouldn't have earned a badge today.
I also got notified twice

@AaronBertrand yes everyone got one it had to do with the split

let me see if I can find the question about it
19
Q: Why are we getting yearling badges for a site that is 1 day old?

bfavarettoThe title says it all, why are we getting yearling badges on MSO for a site that is 1 day old?

3
Q: Yearling badge notified twice

Ionică Bizău Both are for meta.stackoverflow.com. Is it a known bug or just related to this?

2:50 PM
I can only imagine what this will do to meta.SO. If before people downvoted like crazy, now that it won't affect rep I imagine it will be worst

@Lamak but on the flip side, people will care less that they got down-voted
Think about our meta, meta.dba - you don't care if you get down-voted there because it doesn't affect your rep

@AaronBertrand you are right. Most questions complained about being downvoted to oblivion, now that should be better

You're actually less likely to down-vote people like crazy

Maybe people will be less invested in voting?, I think that it will have an effect, but not cleat what it will be

@Lamak I'm not sure if the behavior on dba.meta is because of the lack of rep impact or just low volume among mostly agreeable folks
(And by "the behavior" I mean very few down-votes on questions or answers)

2:55 PM
A little bit of both
scratch that, I don't think anyone here cares about rep

@AaronBertrand I can't believe I'm missing the wild game tonight. I got free tickets to go sit in the snow and watch the Twins get plowed lol
I think we've got a pretty good chance to take the Avalanche.

You keep thinking that
It'll be a good series, but Avs will take it.

I think the wild are a more talented team. They have been riddled with injury and inconsistent play. I'm certainly glad we are playing the Avs instead of the Blues.

hello, where could I find some statistic about the use of mysql? I was helping to my syster in a homewrok and her professor predicts that mysql disappears in about 5 years because of its adquicion by Oracle. I cant agree with that prediction.

3:56 PM
Statistics about database usage is pretty hard to come by. Usually the numbers are BS PR and tend to conflict. However MySQL is insanely popular and I doubt Oracle would just shut it down. Especially since they are making money on the product.
IMO her professor is talking out his ass.

hahaha

@Zane i see taht number, I think the number was reduced because the close question, 3 months ago were almost a million question taged in mysql

Some criterion anyway. Figures for other platforms could be added to give at least some idea about how popular MySQL is.

the things is I would like to use some source that I can cite, he always ask for valids references
and I cant put my experience as references to him

4:01 PM
@MikeFal Parise, Suder, Pommers, Kiovu plus Granland and Coyle are look fantastic.

@Zane McKinnon, O'Reilly, Stasny, and Barrie are great, Johnson has some moments, and of course we have the better goalie. :)

@MikeFal No way we have the better goalie. He's just not playing anymore because he has MS lol

@EmilioGort Depending on what he might consider a valid reference, you could start with the Wikipedia article, which does include references about MySQL's popularity.

wikiepdia isnt a valid reference in the academic world, that were their words, in the forum

@Zane I'll take Varlamov over Bryzgalov any day of the week.

4:06 PM
Harding still leads the league in GAA and Save% ;)

i sent this link to to he, see how many important sites are using mysql mysql.com/customers

@EmilioGort I'm not saying you should refer to Wikipedia, I'm saying you could try references that article uses.

@MikeFal No I meant Josh. He's been out over half the season though and no one knows if/when he'll be back.

ah ok...

@EmilioGort pay for membership to stats agencies like Gartner Research. Most of the "valid references" you find online are sponsored or ill-informed.

4:08 PM
@Zane No matter, I'll take Varlamov over any other goalie in the league. Except maybe Ryan Miller.

@AaronBertrand I think in the same way about Most of the "valid references" you find online are sponsored or ill-informed

Sounds like a douchey professor. "MySQL was soooo great then those corporate fat cats at Oracle bought it and now they'll probably drop it to make more people switch to Oracle"

@EmilioGort Maybe that professor is sponsored too, who knows.

I feel bad for my sister, that is her db professor..

Oracle won't kill off MySQL. They'll just start charging licensing for it.

4:09 PM
@MikeFal Miller is pretty boss. That's why I didn't want to play the Blues.

@MikeFal I put Ryan Miller and Luongo in the same category - whiners who perform well sometimes but can't always stand up to the pressure.

@MikeFal They already make bank off the consultancy fee's

@Zane yes thats the idea i got from her intervension..but I think you cant compare mysql with oracle...my thought

@AaronBertrand I don't know that I buy that. He's been on a team that hasn't been relevant since 2006. I'm interested to see how he does now that he's playing on a good team.

@Zane he's been on some pretty good olympic hockey teams too, and fell short

4:14 PM
@MikeFal i can see the mysql questions now ... "mysql no work, do needful"

Yeah, after group play this year, USA hockey was a pretty big disappointment.

@EmilioGort the point is that MySQL is free, but not really free - support and consultancy for MySQL represents a substantial portion of Oracle's income
(Not more than Oracle licensing, of course, but nothing to sneeze at)

@AaronBertrand there are any reference to the income generated by mysql to oracle, I'd like to use your point in the forum discussion with the "professor"

i think this solved their problem with a comment
Yes it can be done with pivot, since it is a string you will have to use max or min as the aggregate function — bluefeet ♦ 19 secs ago

@EmilioGort you'll have to contact Oracle. As a public company they're required to make financials public, but how they break it down by product is up to them, and they don't seem to do that

4:18 PM
thanks...for the info anyway.

@AaronBertrand Yeah but that was a brilliant game and Crosby put on in in double OT they he had a ridiculous save%.
@MikeFal Quick played pretty great but their team could not keep it together. They looked like shit in that Cananda game.

@Zane In St. Louis he has better defense in front of him, so it will be interesting to see how well he does when that breaks down. No matter how well he plays though, he's still a whiner.

@AaronBertrand I don't know anything about the whiner business. I don't pay attention to any of the off ice stuff.

thanks @AaronBertrand

4:22 PM
This is the Sabres' fans own rag: sabrenoise.com/2013/02/18/…
Not a very team-like thing to do, and not an isolated incident. Off-ice stuff may not be important to all fans, but it is important in the locker room.
Three goalies I would not want on the Bruins: Miller, Luongo, and getting Tim Thomas back. Dressing room poison.

@AaronBertrand They aren't kidding about that support they charge some major bucks for that.
@AaronBertrand Tim Thomas is a bit of a nut bar.

@Zane of course. But just because I don't want Charles Manson on my team doesn't mean I'm ok with John Wayne Gacy.

I still think the Blues are going to be beastly in the playoffs.

They have potential, but they crumbled there at the end. I think they're gonna get beat up in the Chicago series.

Although you never know. Hockey is weird and has by far the most interesting playoffs.

4:31 PM
That series could very easily go 7 games.

@MikeFal Truth.
Chicago isn't exactly a pushover.

@Zane As a team, possibly (if their skid ends). My comment was just p'shawing the notion that Miller is one of the top 2 goalies in the league; he's in the top half for talent but bottom half because head case.

@MikeFal I'm thinking our series will go at least 6.

Probably

Tim Post on April 17, 2014

We’re very pleased to announce that as of today, we’re (finally) splitting the site formerly known as Meta Stack Overflow into two sites:

Meta Stack Overflow is a brand-spanking new site for discussions specific to the Stack Overflow (programming) community:

Meta Stack Exchange will cover feature requests, bugs, and any discussion topics that affect the entire network:

Meta has always been one of the most important things that make our network… work. Almost all of our most important features, improvements, and community rules were partly or entirely based on our users telling us how we could help …

Did this get shared already?

Q: Passing a table to a stored procedure

praveenI have a table with 20 billion rows. Table does not have any indexes as it was created on fly for doing bulk insert operation. The table is being used in a stored procedure which does the following operation Delete A from master a inner join (Select distinct Col from TableB ) b on A.Col = B....

@jcolebrand "dah"? Was that Russian?

Am I the only one who feels area 51 is getting a little out of hand?

Haven't even glanced at it since my failed Stack Overflow for Canadians experiment

I see one for data science. I see one for Operating systems.
Embedded systems.
Joomla
Computer Graphics programming. Those all seem like they already fit into some of the broader sites.
It seems like sooner or later every tag will have it's own site.

@AaronBertrand It's a "guess my problem without any details question". My first thought would be to check the errorlog for anything that might be clearing the plan cache from time to time. That's a quick way to get compilation waits.

@PaulWhite good point, I didn't think of that. Maybe they have a job that occasionally adjusts max server memory.

@JNK Yes I use SQLPrompt all the time. It gets better each new release, though it'll never be perfect I guess.

JNK
6:01 PM
@PaulWhite the stuff they added in the last major release is great though

@AaronBertrand Or clears the adhoc plan cache when it gets large.

JNK
tab history is a super valuable addition

@JNK Yes. Tab history is great, SQLCLR integration, inserted/deleted tables in triggers etc.
Using intellisense when SQLprompt isn't available is painful

JNK
Yeah I deal with it semi-often here when I need to run something locally on one of the servers
I keep typing ssf<tab> and it doesn't auto complete and makes me sad

Q: SQL - 1388 Character SQL Query. ( Must Be A Simpler Solution? )

James CordeiroI've wrote an SQL query that should be simple, that turns out is not so simple. I have a database of 1.2 million words (several languages)+ more. My neice asked how many words I can make with 5 letters from the letters jxtehmrungce. I then decided to run a test. Well, turns out it's easy to write...

6:24 PM
I've become a bit of an Azure fan.
And of course by Azure fan I mean a TitanFall fan who appreciates the solid ping I get from the Azure box they use.

6:45 PM
@Zane Yes....but 6v6 makes me sad

I like that all our bounty questions are for MySQL

@JNK the people who won't spend money on a real database are also the same people who won't spend money on consultants

I've still never been able to claim a bounty.

...but they'll spend all the meaningless rep in the world

JNK
@AaronBertrand but they WILL spend Magic Internet Points™

6:48 PM
@MikeFal I'm telling you it doesn't feel like 6v6
I'll tell you I'm started to get frustrated with it a bit. I keep getting put into games with people who apparently have a lot more spare time than I do.

Heh. Welcome to online gaming. :)

@MikeFal I used to be that kid.

Not me. But then again, when I was a kid, we didn't have online gaming.

Now I'm still hyper competitive but don't have the time to get good. The first month or two I can whoop up on people pretty good. Sooner or later I'm getting tossed left and right.
I saw a kid who have 50 hours in on the launch week.

I'm fairly competitive, but I mostly enjoy team play. My current addiction is still Planetside 2 (what little I've been able to do) and really only when I can play with my outfit.
Though in the last month I haven't had any time to play at all.

7:16 PM
Hearthstone is out on the iPad. Perfect for dipping in and out of
One day I'll give up WoW and all things Blizzard, but not yet

Yeah....I am tempted to try Hearthstone, but I still remember my previous CCG addictions.
Is it only out on iPad, or is it available on Droid?

Only iPad and Windows/Mac OS at the moment. Having worked for a company that tried to get into the mobile space I can fully understand why they developed for iOS first. Android is a mess - Blizzard ooze quality and they won't want people having a negative experience on some crap $99 tablet
I played the WoW TCG, so it's all good for me :) A few of my cards are worth $750 because of their rarity (not checked recently - google for Spectral Tiger WoW TCG)

7:35 PM
Sell that sh!t

I'm not a hoarder, I've chucked most of the cards. WoW TCG has been discontinued (I imagine they revoked the licence because Hearthstone was in development), so it'll only get rarer
So worth keeping

8:13 PM
@FreshPhilOfSO down to 550 better sell that beast.
I really hope they don't release it for Android. I really don't need that company getting their teeth into me again.
