@Shalvenay if I may ask: What is your motivation?

@dot_Sp0T I feel like I'm still...more often than not slogging my way through posts for dribs and drabs of reputation. That, and my question-voting habits still seem subpar (especially here on WB -- I've been able to get the Electorate badge on DIY, EE, RPG, and Aviation, but not WB

@Shalvenay So your motivation is to gather badges and become famous?

@dot_Sp0T Agreed with dot_Sp0T. There is no set goal for Stack Exchange members in the long term. If you're getting what you want out of it, you're giving back, and you're abiding by the letter and spirit of the SE law, then voilà! You've accomplished the only real implied goal of this site.
2

@dot_Sp0T well, the Electorate badge I see as the STack telling me something about how it wants users to behave
and I'm also seeing in my tag badge progress (especially on DIY) that not only am I not famous, but I basically am getting a rep/answer that's below what SE itself expects

The Electorate badge seems to me to be a way of motivating people to vote on questions. That's it. This badge has likely been created in order to ensure that the whole voting system that SE is based on is actually used.

12:34 AM
and it leaves me wondering if I'm just the victim of operating in niche areas where voters are less frequent, or if there's something wrong with the way I answer questions
hey there @WELZ

Hello fellow exchangers, I come here lurking from GD.SE

@WELZ well shoo get back where you came from, we're a highly distrusting and inclusive bunch here

@dot_Sp0T ooh, snarky - however, I'm not intimidated

@WELZ well you're a persistent sort yourself. Welcome to The Factory Floor
(I always wanted to say that)

one other thing I've noticed is that I'm extremely reticent to downvote questions specifically

12:37 AM
@WELZ what can we do for you? :) There's not too much going on here at this hour it seems. But I'll gladly help you where I can

@dot_Sp0T thanks, I'm just lurking, I have to see how welcoming you peeps are - if i should join the community... :p

@WELZ you definitely should not, it will ruin your life, you'll get less sleep and your mind will get filled with all those vague and crazy ideas that you definitely need to think about right now instead of doing any actual work
But the fact that you're already in the chat tells me that it's too late for you and WB.SE has already got you firmly in its grip

@dot_Sp0T thanks and goodbye lmao
@dot_Sp0T nah, I like to check out the famous questions/users/chats on most of the sites, sometimes they are just so intriguing...

@WELZ hmm sounds like a solid thing to do. But I think just checking out the top questions will not get you hooked here. Most of the top ones get their fame from catchy titles and content people can relate to when they're on the HNQ. The really intriguing good ones tend to get something around 20-50 upvotes before they shift to oblivion due to answering them being way more time-consuming than just dropping by for a quick 2-liner.

oh no, not at all. I genuinely read (waste time) tons of questions...

12:47 AM
@WELZ If I may recommend something I would recommend for you to keep looking at the activity feed for a few days. Maybe drop by here again in some 10 hours when more people are around so they can dig out a few jewels for you :)

1:08 AM
@Shalvenay gaather more rep from posting good answers? That means being creative and knowledgeable and knowing how to find info on the web. Something more specific to WB is to work on being a better writer, and that will help in real life and other stacks as well.
@dot_Sp0T hey, there are worse things to be gripped by.
@WELZ hello. I've posted a time or two on GD, too.

@JDługosz yeah -- I suspect it doesn't help very much that my reading tastes skew hyper-technical.
@JDługosz and yes -- WB isn't particularly great for answers for me because it doesn't touch on my strongsuits that often
@JDługosz but at the same time, on DIY.SE I tend to be pretty heavy on answering and still have problems gathering upvotes on my answers -- and it's sometimes hard telling if it's a global problem (voting base) or a local issue (writing style)

@Shalvenay writing style and knowing your audience is pretty important

@Shalvenay seems like DIY has high voting numbers, based on what I see on your profile.

@JourneymanGeek yeah
@JDługosz two things: 1) those votes are spread across lots of posts (the question inflow rate is very high and it can be hard to cull those down as dupes and such) and 2) it seems like some tags have better voting habits than others

@Shalvenay hyper-technical reading habits can work well for WB! Know your way around the subject and and point to the primary information in an answer.

1:21 AM
@JDługosz yeah. most WB stuff seems to be more economics, astronomy/astrophysics, biology, and earth-sciences though than what I deal better with (chem/engineering-scale physics, with something of a nod to combat and military history as well)
gov't stuff seems to be a mixed bag too
speaking of that -- what are good sources for models of law, if you will? I'm fairly facile with models of government as a whole, but my thinking on legal systems is very heavily inspired by what the US does...

1:44 AM
@Shalvenay that's a difficult question. Most law / government stuff I know began with the fact that we actually addressed such thing in history classes in school, when going through all the periods of history like the classical era with greeks, then romans, etc. so you might get a broad overview from a good history book

@dot_Sp0T yeah -- most of the history texts I had in school were too zoomed out for that

5 hours later…
7:17 AM
@JDługosz His answers show that he could actually be a normal member of WorldBuilding, but he always drowns it in random non-sense like he would do on 4chan and other sites. All of his posts show a lack of willingness to learn after all the time we tried to help him. His posts on Meta are very often just outright trolling and he uses this word himself pretty often.
Personally he's on my troll list for some time now after admitting in chat that he's a troll: I won't discuss things with him. I just vote, comment, edit and flag on his posts. Either he learns what is acceptable around here and his posts become better, or he gets ban/suspension after suspension and we won't have his bad posts anymore. Anything else I have tried in the last ~3 months doesn't seem to work.

Good morning

Good morning @Hyfnae

7:41 AM
@JDługosz Interesting question

7:54 AM
I want to ask a question but I don't really know how to word it concisely...

@Hyfnae Chat is the perfect place to start and after you have some ideas you can write a draft in the Sandbox

I've got this idea for a planet that's ecologically ruined and the lower class basically consists of slaves. If the middle/upper class in a mega city consist of roughly 250m inhabitants, what would the size of the lower class be by approximation?
The megacities are sustained by magical terraforming so around the planet similar mega-cities are the only places where humans can survive.

Good morning everybody

My first idea would be to look at ancient Rome or Greece when it comes to slaves.
Good morning @dot_Sp0T

Any good sources?

8:00 AM
Could anybody tell me if these folks are just pulling my leg or if they're serious? worldbuilding.stackexchange.com/a/81637/2746 (talking about the comment section on my answer)

@Hyfnae I'd start with wikipedia

@Secespitus how r you doing?

@dot_Sp0T RonJohn likes to start comment discussions like that
@dot_Sp0T Things are going slowly and next week is an installation. I am pretty sure I won't be around too much then as probably a lot of things will be going wrong

@Hyfnae When you say upper classes do you mean everyone who isn't a slave (so including doctors, lawyers etc) or just the aristocrats?

@Bellerophon I just finally understood the title of the movie Aristocats
@Hyfnae the small m being Millions or mille?

8:06 AM
@dot_Sp0T It reminds me of this meta question. Especially because RonJohn was the first to comment on that specific question, too.
I'd ignore it for now and wait if anybody else has a problem with your answer
@Hyfnae One pretty random citation from that linked wikipedia article "Among the Spartans, for instance, the slave class of helots outnumbered the free by about seven to one, according to Herodotus."
But I'd imagine it depends a lot on the tech-level and whether you allow people to use magic/ magical devices/ ...

@Secespitus while your advice seems sensible, I also want to make sure that anyone, that is willing to spend time writing up a comment explaining that they don't understand something, gets a chance to understand it - so I'm more than willing to add additional information or rewrite sections so everyone gets it

@Bellerophon The lower class aren't as much slaves as they're oppressed to the point where they either comply or die. They have been dehumanized to the point where they have been stripped of a last name which they can buy for an exorbitant amount of money. The middle class is anyone with a last name and the upper class is the ruling body. And money rules, so anyone rich really.

@Secespitus @Hyfnae That sounds pretty high, from the Wikipedia article I work out slaves make up on average (mean) around 28% of the population where slavery is legalised.

@dot_Sp0T That is admirable and definitely a good way to go about this. If you want to invest the time then a graphic as you just mentioned in your comment to CandiedOrange would definitely improve your post. I am always a fan of anything similar to sketches. (You already have my upvote, though)
@Bellerophon That sounds reasonable. I only skimmed the text and I don't remember much from my history lessons in school about that topic. It was an interesting number though.

Those people in the lower class aren't actual property of someone though. So I don't quite know if the term slave is applicable.

8:15 AM
@Bellerophon On the other hand spartans were known for being a bit different compared to normal greeks and the roman empire
@Hyfnae Maybe the caste system of india could be a good read, too, in that case.

Yes!
Thank you @Secespitus.
Why didn't I think of that.

Glad I could help :D

@Secespitus guess I'll whip something up then

@Secespitus Indeed. Interestingly though the Greeks seemed keen on slavery with Athens having 60% slaves while Rome only had about 25%.

@Bellerophon Regarding the slaves on sparta I mentioned: " according to Critias, they were "slaves to the utmost",[1] whereas according to Pollux, they occupied a status "between free men and slaves".[2] Tied to the land, they primarily worked in agriculture as a majority and economically supported the Spartan citizens."

8:20 AM
@Bellerophon the Romans made most of their slaves Romans in order to keep them content

You have to give people hope they can escape their fate.
However small the glimmer of hope might be.

@Hyfnae Just as you did with the price for the name, right? ;)

Exactly.
Only crime or magical arenafighting allows to get that sort of money.

I've seen an anime that used something similar in one small scene - basically the fear and despair is greater when people are close to freedom and they thought they escaped everything, because they feel like "I was so close!!"
The glimmer of hope gives them something to strive for
This article about the Helots is pretty interesting: "Helots were ritually mistreated, humiliated and even slaughtered: every autumn the Spartans would declare war on the helots so they could be killed by a member of the Crypteia without fear of repercussion"

tyvm, I've got some reading to do to determine the demographics.
You've given me some really helpful pointers.

8:32 AM
@Hyfnae That's why asking in the chat first is nearly always a good idea :D Have fun with your research ;)

1 hour later…
9:36 AM
Graphic is done, glad about any feedback

@dot_Sp0T I'd upvote again

@Secespitus sycophant
I knew the word would grow on me :D

@dot_Sp0T Glad I was able to enrich your vocabulary :D

@Secespitus I'm glad too :D

2 hours later…
11:44 AM
Does any of you know a good tool to design city layouts?

11:54 AM
@Hyfnae I don't have any tools, but I remember from reading the Dungeon Master Guide from Dungeons and Dragons that there was a section with some tables you can roll on to get some ideas about a city you are trying to create. This question on RPG.SE might be useful, too.

The problem isn't to determine what's in the city, the problem is making a graphical depiction of my city's layout.

RPG Maker maybe?

I already got all important components of the city and their approximate locations listed and also less important components that are there to make the thing feel real. I just find myself unable to properly draw it so I need an alternative for the graphical part.

12:56 PM
@Hyfnae uhm, just place down boxes where the stuff is that you've already defined. Next connect everything with roads. Then add fluff

@Hyfnae What's to stop you from just drawing them out in a vector art program like Inkscape? There's so much history wrapped up in the layout of a city, that you can basically make the streets do whatever you want.
Boston, MA, USA has a giant rats nest of streets. Salt Lake City, UT, USA is a highly ordered grid. Both city reflect the evolutionary growth of that city.

@Hyfnae Do you mean "draw" as in "street map" or "draw" as in "pretty picture"?

@JDługosz I don't listen to polka. It just reminded me of Polka, with a touch of hoedown barn raising music.

@Secespitus draw as in just do it. After that you can overlay it with pretty-paper or another layer in your drawing program and retrace only the stuff that looks good
@Hyfnae you might also want to take a look at European cities, especially those in Switzerland, like Zurich, Bern or Basel, Fribourg, Lucerne, stuff like that

@dot_Sp0T Seconded. The population density of Paris along and why it's so dense is really good reading too.

1:03 PM
@Green or Berlin, for learning what the division of a country can do to a city

@dot_Sp0T That is another excellent example.

@Green so is Moscow and it's subway network
Or Prague

You could also choose a city from a part of the world your audience probably isn't visiting so often and adapt that a bit

Hong-Kong comes to mind for any futuristic Cyberpunk settings

@dot_Sp0T Agreed. Hong Kong is an excellent example of what super dense cities look like. Should probably make a trip there to see exactly how dense it all is.

1:07 PM
@Green well ping me if when you go so we can make a travelgroup

@dot_Sp0T If circumstances permit, sure.

@Green Smuggle me in your luggage.

@NexTerren I travel light. I don't think you'd fit.
Well, I might be able to take your head with me but that's definitely not going to make it through customs.

Why did nobody like my answer mentioning the evil-ness of twins? worldbuilding.stackexchange.com/questions/63100/…

@dot_Sp0T That question was closed 5 months ago. Probably no one has seen your answer since it was closed.

1:16 PM
@dot_Sp0T It's closed, nobody read it

Hello @Green and fellow humans!

@SerbanTanasa Are you sure everyone here is a human?

Why do you people always close good questions
?

@SerbanTanasa Hey Servant!

@Secespitus Well he implied that Green wasn't human. Which is fair, since he's a color.

1:22 PM
@Secespitus I feel dancer

@NexTerren Not true. To DaaahWhooosh, I'm just a black hole in his screen.

@NexTerren Fair point. But are we sure everyone else is a human?

...which still isn't human....I guess I'm not gaining much from that argument.

@Green He was color blind, right?

@Secespitus Is color blind, yes.

1:23 PM
@Green Black holes pull in all light. Including, in your case, green light.

@NexTerren So does that make me cooler than all of you since I don't radiate anything?

@Green He was color blind. He still is, but he was too.
@Green ...Wouldn't that make you the exact opposite of cool?
Since you retain all of your heat?

@NexTerren I guess it depends on where we are measuring. If you're measuring from outside my radius, then I appear very cold. If you're measuring from within my radius, I'd be beyond white-hot.
And so help me if anyone makes proctology jokes.

Now that was weird. A lady on the train asked me something in English, but now she's talking German on her phone. I feel like I don't belong anymore..

@Green, I think you misspelled 'Savant'

1:33 PM
@SerbanTanasa The T is silent and the 'v' is pronounced like a 'b'. Nope, I spelled it right ;)

Well, my name is derived from a archaic Romanian term-set that can be interpreted as either "Servant of the Lord" or "Slave Master"
guess which one I favor
you get one guess

@SerbanTanasa while you're around, what's the new correct way to VTC idea-generation questions?

Too Broad usually

1
Q: What happened to the idea generation close reason?

Xandar The ZenonWhy is the close reason "idea generation" gone? I have not heard really anything about the change, probably because I don't go on meta too often. Could someone point me to a post about it, or just tell me? I'm reasonably sure it has become the "too broad" close reason, and the very subjective clo...

Use "Too Broad" or "Primarily Opinion Based" as the alternatives.

Well, nvm. The question got deleted it seems
Here's the link for anyone that is more powerful than the average me: worldbuilding.stackexchange.com/questions/81704/…

1:42 PM
@dot_Sp0T I am not powerful. Which one was it? The Stargate?

@Secespitus the Stargate indeed. Asking what to do with the Stargate
I spent like 60 seconds typing out a comment explaining the issue with idea generation

@SerbanTanasa I'm just poking your ego a bit. No harm intended. :)

oh look, I have 14k rep now. I got so used to 13k...

@DaaaahWhoosh I'm looking to forward to 30K. Been at 29K for way too long.

I have to come up with questions/answers at some point to stay over 2k...

1:54 PM
@Secespitus You get downvoted that much?

@Green No, I downvote so much
Well, not much

@Secespitus Oh dang!

I just don't get any upvotes because I never post anything new :D

@Secespitus 190 isn't too bad. I mean, you upvote 17 times as much.

@HDE226868 Yeah, I am voting a lot.
It would be so much easier to get to 3k if I could still get rep from edits. We should raise that limit to 4k or something like that :D

2:14 PM
@Secespitus If you can make 100 constructive edits in an hour I will give you 1000 rep.

yes, yes, you all have very nice e-peens.

@Bellerophon I could just go through old questions in one of the bigger tags. But then I would bump all those old questions to the active tab, which would probably not be too well received. So while I'd love to accept that challenge I have to decline it
@James Losing the privilege to edit without needing other people to approve those edits is a reason to be concerned about my precious internet points. Though I still have some time before that

@James, It's mostly about the e-size, after compression.

@Secespitus You reckon you can do an edit every 40 seconds? I doubt my Internet could manage that.

@Bellerophon We will never know ;)

2:22 PM
@Bellerophon so many edits in such a short time sounds like a recipe for bad edits. That's less than a minute to read a question, see things that can be improved, type them out, and move on to the next question...

@AndyD273 Depends on the edits, I can see updating grammar/spelling in that timeframe, but it'd certainly be too fast for changing content effectively.

you could line up all the edits in different tabs, then submit them at the same time

That's true... Ok, loophole accepted.
Oh, so I watched a new anime last night called Blame! on Netflix... It was an interesting take on the "Terminator style" genre, and some interesting world building too.

2:39 PM
"Terminator style"? Like, naked, and then biker clothes?

@DaaaahWhoosh Like AI sending humanoid killer robots to kill any humans it finds, and humans living in the wreckage of an seemingly endless mega city that keeps getting bigger

oh, that makes more sense

While a guy dressed in black, who may or may not be cyborg, is trying to save people and find a way to stop the machines from killing everyone.
Well, he's definitely a cyborg, just don't know how much
And the city is so big. They ask the guy in black where he comes from, and his answer is something like "6000 levels below"

oh, but is it CGI? It seems like it is, and that makes me really not want to see it
I tried watching Knights of Sidonia, but found it to be absolutely terrible
(only slightly better once I switched from dub to sub)
lol wrong window

1 hour later…
3:56 PM
@DaaaahWhoosh I don't think it's CGI.... it didn't really look like it to me anyway, at least not how I think of CGI anyway

@DaaaahWhoosh Sidonia no Kishin is def better in written form. Although it's still an acquired taste.

Hmm, I guess it is CGI... So I guess I don't know what CGI anime actually looks like

4:10 PM
@dot_Sp0T I think it was a combination of the CGI, the fact that it was identical robots fighting tentacles, and the cyborg bear in a nurse outfit that turned me away
I don't want to judge the manga, I'm sure it's better, but I'm not willing to pay money to find out
@AndyD273 supposedly it can be done well, but as someone who draws a lot I seem to be extra-sensitive to such things

@DaaaahWhoosh kissmanga?

oh, huh. I can read it there for free?

I don't know if you can.
I know that I can due to the fact that the law in my country allows me to pretty much download almost anything exempt from software that removes copy-protection. As long as I do not upload it.

4:44 PM
@DaaaahWhoosh Knights of Sidonia was a bit weird, especially because of the unusual style. The story was... okay I guess.

@Secespitus definitely preferred youtube.com/watch?v=G_sBOsh-vyI

@RoryAlsop ... What?? :D

@Secespitus Knights of Cydonia :-)

Yeah, but the video is weird

@dot_Sp0T Hypothetically, once I've checked all applicable laws and stuff... Is there a way to download from kissmanga so I don't have to read it on the website?
That doesn't involve viewing each page and downloading the image I mean

4:53 PM
@AndyD273 well, technically you are already downloading it when you read it on the website, as that is how the internet works.
@AndyD273 yarrrr. It seemeth thou knoweth me too well

@dot_Sp0T :)

@Secespitus :-)

I honestly don't know. I only read a few chapters ever on that site, normally I buy them at the local mangastore
I don't think there's an easy way to download other than spending some 10minutes hacking together a tool that downloads the images from each page for you

Gotcha. Ok, just figured I'd check

5:06 PM
`There's probably other sites, but that is the one my more manga-up-to-date friends seem to use

@dot_Sp0T Yeah, I can't spend $20 per volume when there are 10 volumes... I guess I'll have to hold off on reading it

5:22 PM
@Secespitus you seem to be getting points from editing tag wikis — something that still needs some work done. Your rep page is showing funny things though, the last few days.
@Secespitus why, are you losing rep?

@JDługosz Why would downvotes be funny?
And I am thinking about tag wikis from time to time. But creating a tag wiki is not as easy as fixing typos so I don't try it too often.

@JDługosz excessive downvoting
@Secespitus I don't think he means funny haha

"Excessive" = ~2 every day for like 4 days in a row.

@AndyD273 maybe a Greasemonkey script?

@Secespitus Hmm, doesn't seem like that would be very noticeable at such a low number...

5:28 PM
@AndyD273 Like I said: I don't get any upvotes. Not a single one. I don't post anything that could get rep.

@AndyD273 Before browsers had good download managers and speeds were much slower, I used the “GetRight” app. It includes a feature to read a page and download all the images on it, or even traverse a tree. I suppose it would work for sites other than porn…

I just looked at my page and it's not even days in a row. It's more like 12 downvotes in 12 days. 4 at most on a single day

@Secespitus showing funny things: a day shows a total of 1 point gained, but expanding it says “no rep changes on this day”. I don't see any losses other than a bounty that was given.

@Secespitus Maybe take a break from down voting and come up with something better? Rep isn't all that hard to get really, and if you can see enough problems in an answer to down vote it, you can probably see how to fix it and make it better...

5:32 PM
@JDługosz I don't see a day with one point gained.

May 21, may 17, may 9, all show “1”.

@AndyD273 It's just what I come across when reading things. Just because I see bad answers doesn't mean I know a good answer.
@JDługosz May 9 is minus 1 and the others are not shown on my page.

@JDługosz I know that as a non mod I don't see any display of points lost from downvotes.

@JDługosz Maybe it's some kind of bug when I cancelled my vote on something?

5:41 PM

Retracting a downvote on a question gives you a +1 rep gain. If you downvoted and retracted in one day. you had a +1 rep gain but no rep change. It could be displaying it's math wrong.

You just can't see my downvotes

@AndyD273 jeez are they really that expensive overseas?
@AndyD273 I find it at $7 per volume on amazon: amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/1935654802/…

@sphennings “its“, not “it’s”

@JDługosz Thanks for the reminder. I've been fighting a losing battle about remembering to distinguish between them for a while now.

5:49 PM
@sphennings if it’s not showing votes (that makes sense) then it gets funny results for unvotes.
@sphennings easy: when you use a contraction, expand it out in your mind. “it’s” -> “it is”.

My brain thinks "it's" is the possessive form of it. That's what trips me up.

@sphennings on the flip side, his/hers/its are a matched set. You would never write “hi’s” for “his”, right?

@sphennings why does it do that?

@sphennings pronouns don’t do that. You have different posessive pronouns instead.

@dot_Sp0T I don't know it just always has. I don't even have the excuse of ESL.

5:54 PM
Hopefully those are enough things to muse over, to improve your internal parser.
Writer tip: this won't work for every quick chat line, but when writing a post or other “good” piece of material, refer to a post-it note when proofreading it. Add “grep for all “it's” and verify” to that post-it. It will also bear words to avoid as overused, and other reminders.

@dot_Sp0T This is the one I was looking at: amazon.com/BLAME-1-Tsutomu-Nihei/dp/1942993773
the kindle edition is $10, the comixology version is $20 for some reason

I improved your answer here worldbuilding.stackexchange.com/a/68543 I think going into detail — even so briefly — on how carnivorous plants do digest their food (rather than just being a thing) makes it easily the top answer. The accepted answer is lame.

The paper version is > $25

@JDługosz Thank you very much

@Secespitus so perhaps you can find other similar things in your existing posts. Going back later and seeing all the answers, you might realize something. You might fix up an answer post to make it better written, better referenced, more complete. I do that when I don’t see anything new that’s interesting for me to answer.

6:07 PM
@JDługosz That might be a good idea. All of my answers are from the time when I started in this community and at some point I basically stopped. Thanks for the suggestion.

@sphennings no excuses
@AndyD273 well, that's Blame! - naturally it'll be more expensive

@dot_Sp0T I'd much rather have a spelling mistake but communicate myself clearly than the inverse.

@dot_Sp0T I Blame! it on the fans

@sphennings I admit I only know ESL as a language school; what is your abbreviation?

English as a Second Language

6:14 PM
I was going to guess English Sign Language

I guess it's way easier for a non-native speaker
@AndyD273 European Song Language

@AndyD273 There isn't a 1 to 1 correlation between signed language and a spoken language. American Sign Language and British Sign Language are considered different languages.

@dot_Sp0T That sounds... intriguing. Wonder if that would sound anything like the whistling language:
@sphennings I know. That seems like a flaw, IMHO

@AndyD273 it's a pun on the ESC (European Song Contest)

@AndyD273 by that logic everyone should be only be speaking one language.

6:22 PM
@dot_Sp0T I guessed that it was something that you made up... But the sound of it is intriguing
@sphennings American English and British English ARE the same language (minus the slang I guess).

@AndyD273 But the signed languages spoken in both countries are significantly different. Even fundamental things like how letters are signed differs.

If I was deaf, and wanted to fly to England, it would be more difficult than it already was. "Oh, I know sign language gov... Wait, you want to do what with my sheep??"
2

@sphennings Interesting. Why is that?

"And wouldn't that be cruel to the octopus too???"

@Secespitus In ASL the letters are signed with one hand. In BSL the letters are signed using both hands.
@Secespitus Linguistically speaking ASL has more in common with French Signed language than BSL.

6:30 PM
@sphennings That's weird

It's because in the 1800s when an American Minister traveled to Europe to learn a signed language to teach back in America he was rebuffed by the schools in Britain.

@sphennings Right, I get that. I kind of think that for spoken languages we won't ever have one single language, but eventually there will be built in AI translators that will just whisper in your ear when someone speaks a language that you don't know. Then I'll finally understand my Jive friends...

@AndyD273 Translation is such a complex subject that I think it's possible that we will have strong general purpose AI before we have perfect machine translation.

@sphennings Maybe, though I'm more optimistic. It doesn't have to be perfect, just better than I can do learning from a book in a couple weeks: qz.com/526019/…

Q: Why would a language be undubbable by universal (machine) translator?

AnonymousA hypothetical speculative fiction setting uses the universal translator/babelfish/translator microbes/whathaveyou as a convenient plot device. However, certain languages are simply untranslatable by this method. What property would make such languages untranslatable by the universal translator?...

6:39 PM
@Secespitus yes?

@Secespitus I always thought that "Darmok and Jalad" should have been translatable. A skilled translator will translate idioms into a form understandable by the listener.

@sphennings but you have to know the idioms first

Yes and idoms are part of the speech act.

@Secespitus Yes, but that's purposefully looking for something that can't be translated, by say having the meaning be opaque. But human languages generally aren't like that. Any living language is known enough that it could be translated by an AI with in > 70% accuracy.
(I made that percentage up)

@AndyD273 Perhaps for the major languages with millions of speakers. What about the other 5000 languages of the world?
@AndyD273 The average language has less than 10,000 speakers.

6:47 PM
the trouble with 'universal translators' is that they have to hear every 'word' in the language at least once. Unless you can figure out the word for 'dog' from the word 'cat' somehow

7:43 PM
@sphennings I'd be willing to bet that the major languages would cover a very high percentage of humans. Even most of the ones that speak the smaller languages probably know at least a little of one of the major languages. And once you have the structure in place, you can work on expanding it over time, so Swahili (or whatever) will come along eventually

@AndyD273 I agree.

@sphennings so in C++SL you use for feet for metatemplates.

1 hour later…
9:05 PM
hey there @NexTerren

9:54 PM
hello there @Thriggle

@Shalvenay howdy!

@Thriggle what brings you here today?

@Shalvenay Just checking out the chat for the first time. :)

ah

Ah, fresh blood! Everybody know their parts now…

10:08 PM
hey there @JDługosz

@JDługosz i get the feeling that the OP from the 3D printer question might be Redacted

@Thriggle well, you certainly made an impression once you became an active poster: 96 upvotes and still going!

speaking of answers -- is there anything glaring I'm missing in my answer to the EMP question?

@dot_Sp0T This one? It's not flashy enough to be Redacted

hey there @Secespitus

10:15 PM
Hey there @Shalvenay

how're things going?

@Shalvenay Pretty normal. And on your side?

@Shalvenay nah check the comment with the lemons

@JDługosz Yeah, that's been quite surprising! I've been chugging along providing technical answers in SE for years and I've only once broken 10 upvotes on an answer.
Now I know the terrible power of the HNQ

alright here. wondering if I missed something big in my answer to the recent EMP question

@dot_Sp0T No, it appears not. The IP address is on a different contenent, and isn’t shared with any other accounts, and isn't a recognisable proxy service (though that doesn’t mean it isn’t).

@JDługosz contenent?

@dot_Sp0T There is no excessive punctuation, no "trying to be funny", no "rhetoric question for everybody who knows a certain reference", etc. I am pretty sure that's not Redacted's style.

@Thriggle I’ve made the same remark about certain “easy” answers that get piled on, while fhose I really care about are underrated.
@dot_Sp0T land mass that you can't drive between.

@JDługosz People are looking for funny easy to read stuff when looking at the HNQ.

10:27 PM
@Thriggle hopefully it will encourage you to read and post more.
That's definitely the creative and technical thinking that I enjoy.

@JDługosz Haha, thanks! I'll keep honing my MS Paint skills

hey there @HDE226868

waves

how're things going?

10:45 PM
@Thriggle back in the day, MS Paint was pure drek.
Why not look at Gimp for painting and Inkscape for these kinds of drawings (as vettors)?
Someone want to nominate this as Unclear before we start getting bad answers?

@Shalvenay Well, they're going.

@JDługosz The wormhole is supposed to prevent light from going through it. How would you look through it if light can't go through?

@Secespitus -- you about a bit?

@Shalvenay ... What?

@Secespitus ...how lethal could you make a knife concealed in the form of a lipstick case, and how would it function?

10:57 PM
@Shalvenay Everything is deadly if you know where to hit your opponent. A needle or something similar would be more than enough.
Maybe a little button to make the needle spring forth so that you can actually stab someone?

@Secespitus nods -- I was thinking more in terms of length -- you can get at a lot more vital spots from a lot more angles with a longer blade...
that, and handling

Yeah, that's true. But if you only want the case to look like a lipstick then the blade could be as long as your average lipstick case, right?

@Secespitus yeah -- would a twist-out blade be workable? and how long would the resulting blade be?

@Shalvenay I don't know anything about lipstick, but this site mentions different lengths up to 12.7mm. I think you could make a special "designer case" with a bit more (not too much or else people might get suspicious).
Googling "length of lipsticks" only return results in terms of swipes, not centimeters...

the cup size seems to be a diameter not a length

11:10 PM
@Shalvenay ... that makes more sense actually... it's too late to think for me

the quoted length for a "full size" package is 70mm

I think I will go to bed. See you guys around.
