@Randal'Thor So what happened next? Nice bit of writing, reads like the beginning of a mystery or maybe a setup/action/fantasy thing.

Q: How many hours a day will it take to complete NaNoWriMo?

PureferretOr more helpfully, how do I gauge for myself in a realistic setting, how many hours an evening it will take to write 1,666 words (assusming all planning is done and no editing is done during NaNoWriMo, as unrealistic as that may be). I suspect this will be different between people, so I'd like ...

Getting some not very to the point answers to that ^
How can I improve it?

"They will not come". The old but majestic figure pours some wine into his glass, sitting on the far end of the long dinner table, accompanying a series of empty chairs. The sound of wine hitting the floor of the glass rang through the silence of the empty dining, the hallway, the stairways and throughout the castle. He empties the glass, and stares at the ceiling. A shadow of a bat hovering near the ceiling could be seen in the dim lamplight.

"... at the time of the flood, I opened wide the castle door. My lands drowned, but hundreds of people were saved. And now, when I require them the
The running theme is the decay of feudalism this time, yes :P

@NeilFein Definitely fantasy; nearly all my contributions to these writing exercises have been fantasy. The viewpoint character was roughly inspired by Karis from David Gemmell's Dark Moon. As for what happened to all the people, I deliberately left it open. Most likely food poisoning - remember she was the only one who didn't eat at the castle the previous night. Or perhaps the castle had already been taken by that army not far away and she hadn't heard about it during her journey.

@BalarkaSen Ooh, some very nice description in that.
@Randal'Thor food poisoning... or murder most foul?!

@NeilFein Thanks, however the past/present tenses are garbled - I frequently overlook that, perhaps because in my mother-tongue such things are allowed. It's not too hard to fix all of that though.

@NeilFein The food poisoning could be murder. That nearby army might have sent someone to taint the supplies or the well in the castle.

Questions like this have been asked before, and are usually left open as a question related to writing. However, now that the law site is up and running, perhaps it'd be best to send these questions there. — Neil Fein ♦ 7 hours ago
@NeilFein I think the difference between the song-lyrics-on-wine-bottles question and those other ones is that the others are from the perspective of the songwriter, while this one is from the perspective of someone who wants to use written work. Which I didn't think about when casting the last close vote and might be splitting the hair too finely. It just doesn't seem like a question about writing. I didn't want to discuss it in comments, though, hence bringing it here for the community.
