Q: Not using conjunctive adverbs to begin a new paragraph in plain document

OokerSometimes, I find myself not using conjunctive adverbs when I start a new paragraph in academic documents/essays, like IELTS writing test, dissertation or SOP, especially when the topics are not relative to each other. It's not that I'm not aware of using it, I just feel that not using them will ...

Q: How much repetition is too much repetition?

Alexandro ChenThis is a question that'd been bothering me for a while. Here's an example: My heart racing, I wriggled to the edge of the bed and fumbled for Travis' hand. Just make sure to hold onto it, he'd said, whenever you get the chance. I searched for a few minutes until I finally found it—smoo...

Hi.

> She argues that the issue is not the increase in people putting pen to paper or keypad to blog, but the lack of a mechanism for separating those who should remain amateurs from those who should make a living from writing.
When did I get a hair across my ass about this kind of stuff?

which kind of stuff? people being patronising for no reason, or bad writers getting paid by self publishing?

I'm not sure when I started to care about the professionalism of the writing industry.

I see :D

The point being made above was basically (another quote): "I’m less concerned with lots of people trying to be writers than I am about an industry that doesn’t know how to distill out who’s good and who’s bad..."

I think that's no more the case now than ever
but what do I know?

8:08 PM
Um. A lot?

yeah, but not about publishing :D
I mean, it feels like publishers have always made bum decisions sometimes. does the author think it's getting worse now that people have more freedom?

> “The problem now is ... who are you going to learn your craft from? What structures are going to support you in doing work that’s any good? And how are you going to know if it’s any good?
> Nobody looks at you now when you’re 27 and you write the kind of stuff that everyone who is 27 writes and says ‘hey, man, I know you think this is smart but there’s this, this, and that, and you need to have an aesthetic that governs what you do and isn’t dumb, and you need to actually spend time with the people you write about, and if you just join the herd of smart-asses on Twitter you will end up looking like a tool.’

Q: Where's the most appropriate place to ask about the efficacy of various documentation models?

dwwilson66I was looking for a technical writing or documentation-writing stack, but didn't see one. Tips would be appreciated.

well... so?
so more people are writing stuff publicly, that's fine
of course there will be a lot of shit
but there are people you can learn from and places where you can learn to write better.

The article is lamenting the paradigm shift. Well, not lamenting. Just pointing it out.

8:13 PM
I guess
like if you're an illustrator, you learn to get better by mimmicking artists you like. it's the same for writers

Yeah.
This kind of stuff bugs me too. Seriously, this must be written by a man.
> It is not just his job not to look; it is our responsibility to provide nothing provocative to look at.
Hahahahahahaha

> We’re in this together, girls! Let’s honor God and earn the respect of the men around us by pursuing His standards for all of life and living.
probably written by a woman, then?

Might as well bind all your curves flat and wear a burka.
@MattЭллен The author and credit suggest a woman, but it's got to be a lie.
And sunglasses.
"It's difficult to work out when there are girls wearing yoga pants." No consideration for how difficult it is to work out completely covered in loose clothing, referencing women as "girls", no thought that maybe he should go to a men's club instead of a mixed-sex place then. Nope.

yeah, possibly

Q: Is there any research about the efficacy of illustration and example placement in procedure writing?

dwwilson66In writing procedural documentation, I have the choice of writing the complete step-by-step instructions with references to an appendix of illustrations, For instance: 1. Do task 1 (see Fig. 1) 2. Do task 2 (see Fig. 2) Illustrations ------------- +-------+ | Fig 1 | +-------+ +-------+ | Fig...
