12:30 AM
breaking news:
:)
4 hours ago, by Jolenealaska
I had an affair in college that I remember very fondly. If gay is black and straight is white, I'm charcoal.
I got that backwards:) I mean if gay is white and straight is black....oh well

1:22 AM
@Jolenealaska I thought it was all a rainbow!

2:03 AM
OK, in that case, I pick chartreuse.

1 hour later…
3:29 AM
@Jefromi What is this, and did I cause it with my paprika answer?
11
A: How do I achieve a light and even 'dusting' of paprika?

JolenealaskaYour initial theory is good, your technique just needs to be tweaked. The further away your "dusting" hand, the more evenly your food will be dusted. So hold a pinch of paprika far from the chops, perhaps even over your head, do the little sprinkling motion with your fingers as you toss the pap...

The question was very "hot" for a while.

4:01 AM
@Jolenealaska I think it's just that they had spammy tags/description on the video?
So they probably had it coming; it's possible that increased traffic caused it to get noticed and flagged but just as easily could be a coincidence.
Poking around it sounds like they might've started enforcing that policy more strictly recently, so... I'd say coincidence.

OK, good. I'll look later to see if I can find a replacement clip.

4:40 AM
Good Morning! @Jolenealaska @Jefromi
what does "Boiling Frog" metaphor means? When do we use it? example situation please?

The boiling frog is an anecdote describing a frog slowly being boiled alive. The premise is that if a frog is placed in boiling water, it will jump out, but if it is placed in cold water that is slowly heated, it will not perceive the danger and will be cooked to death. The story is often used as a metaphor for the inability or unwillingness of people to react to threats that occur gradually, such as creeping state surveillance. According to contemporary biologists, the premise of the story is false: a frog submerged and gradually heated will jump out. However, some 19th-century experiments suggested...
verrry sleeeepy.......
sorry not up for chatting right now

It's ok. Sorry for disturbing you

you didn't!
But I'm going to bed now. G'night

5:05 AM
@JudeNiroshan Why not ask where others will benefit from the answer? I assume that'd be on topic on ELL?

@Jefromi i'll try

3 hours later…
8:02 AM
morning all

1 hour later…
9:25 AM
well, it's very quiet

2 hours later…
11:24 AM
@ElendilTheTall very very quiet
I am making quesadilla for dinner
Chicken Quesadilla
mouth watering

12:27 PM
@Gigili is that yours? very tasty looking!

@ElendilTheTall Howdy.

@cindy hi!
how did the phone call go?

It went well. It was a very in depth pre-screen. The recruiter said she was going to forward my resume to the hiring manager and if he/she thought I had appropriate skills he/she would contact me to set up an interview.
Fingers crossed big time!

absolutely!
<browses amazon's Citizen section>
:D

12:42 PM
I did some research and there are tons of places to buy online. No big surprise there. But I was amazed at all of the retailers who carry them.

yeah, they're very popular
they're the upper end of average brands essentially
the kind of thing you'd buy for a 'major' birthday or a long-service present

True. But with the price points I was surprised at some of the retailers.
Of course those stores probably only carry the lower end. The high end are probably only in jewelry stores or high end dept. stores.

yeah, that sounds about right
I think the cheapest Citizen is around £100 here
@jay hi
@Cindy so when should you hear back from them?

Yeah. I looked and the cheapest I found here was $150.

Jay
hi :(

12:56 PM
@ElendilTheTall Don't know.

@Jay why the sad face?

Jay
I guess you dont read back. I was here last night with jojo after my car accident
i kinda wrecked my brand new car.

woah, woah, woah
aw heck
that sucks

Jay
its not totaled but its gonna be pretty high deductible

your fault?

Jay
12:57 PM
yea
it was a single person accident so there isnt anyone else to blame lol
i was parallel parking near a dumpster and the dumpster had like a piece of metal that was jutting out that i didnt notice

Jay
and the front right corner of my car got "hooked" into the metal as i was backing

happens to the best of us dude

Jay
pretty much ripped the front of my bumper and attached bits of my car off
im expecting a call from the autobody shop today. my insurance sent them the information. I just hope this resolves quickly because renting a car and such will get expensive adding on to the high deductible cost

doesn't your insurance give you a courtesy car?

Jay
1:01 PM
they looked and i apparently didnt sign up for that
it wasnt part of my policy

jeez. Americans don't half get ripped off by insurers
here courtesy cars are like a standard thing

Jay
ah well

get a bike!

Jay
i was super stressed out about it last night

understandable enough

Jay
1:02 PM
but after sleeping on it i feel slightly better

it's easy to feel guilty
but heck, the only victim was your car
lesson learned, move on

Jay
my poor poor car
when i say brand new i mean like less than 3000 miles on it

it's still just a car
no need to anthropomorphise it

Jay
it was so shiny and beautiful

it will rise again, and you will take better care of it in future

Jay
1:04 PM
maybe.
hopefully
or ill be incorrigible

I put the back end out on mine this morning, the ESP had to kick in
road was a bit wet
you can bet your ass i was more careful after that

Jay
what do you mean you back end out on yours

I turned too sharply traversing a roundabout causing the car to begin to skid

Jay
Ohhh
Im glad that turned out better for you

I was never worried O.O

1:55 PM
well, it's gone and got quiet again...

2:41 PM
I have a question about the "newness" of a topic -- interested if people think it's "new" enough for a separate question. I'm interested in the safety of using of glass cookware on a glass-ceramic cooktop. There's this question and an excellent answer from @rumtscho. I asked a follow-up comment not long ago on rummi's answer, but am considering a new question on the "glass-on-glass" topic.

@hoc_age well, what are you planning on asking?

@ElendilTheTall Basically, "Is glass cookware safe to use on a glass-ceramic cooktop?"
Manufacturers say stuff like (e.g., GE) don't use because of scratching (not a concern) and poor thermal conductivity (may be an issue).

I'd say that was different enough to warrant a separate question

Rummi's answer calls out glass as the only reasonable recommendation: "Only the glass warning is good - not because it would damage the stove, but because you risk the glass vessel itself to shatter."

why you'd want to use glass on a stove top is another matter
even if it was safe, it would be a terrible material for cooking with
what do you plan on doing with it?

2:46 PM
Ha. Why not? You don't like to use glass cooking vessels in general?

glass is fine in the oven
but on the hob there are vastly superior materials, like, oh, I don't know, metal
you know, materials that efficiently conduct heat

True, but there are lots of cookware that are glass -- e.g., I have a kettle like this one and it works quite well...
I find it works better than metal pots on my gas range. But perhaps I just like the aesthetics better.
Perhaps I'll do a boiling-time experiment...
@ElendilTheTall BTW: both you and @Jefromi recently (ish?) changed your icons -- I thought you were a LoTR-style tree (Ent?) and Jefromi was the Tron guy or something. Lawsuit protection?
@ElendilTheTall Ultimately the question stems from another question on Coffee -- this one about old glass vac-pot on glass hob as I cited in my comment.
@ElendilTheTall Okay, perhaps I'll ask away. Thanks for the input! And perhaps you should ask the "why use glass range-top cookware ever?" and I shall do the boil-time experiment...

@hoc_age my icon has been a gravatar for getting on 5 years apart from about a 4 hour period a couple of years ago when it was a White Tree of Gondor. But I decided it didn't look very good when it was so small, and went back to the gravatar
I can't speak for Jefromi

3:06 PM
@ElendilTheTall Wacky, I must remember incorrectly. Or my browser cached that 4-hour window by happenstance. I'm doing the water-boiling experiment as we "speak".

so you're a coffee buff?

I like my coffee...
How about you?

i'm partial to a brew
i am toying with getting an aeropress
what are your thoughts?
@hoc_age

Join us over at Coffee! :-D
I like the AeroPress. It's a pretty good method.

i'm told there's a particular Japanese hand grinder that fits neatly inside the AP

3:15 PM
I find the AeroPress a bit fussy to work with, compared with other methods (I prefer cone-filter pour-over). It's easier (for me) to clean up the cone filter and I like the result better.

I have a Hario V60

But if you're looking for a strong, espresso-like (Aerobie calls it "aerpresso") brew, AeroPress is very hard to beat. It has a reasonably wide width of freedom.

for a while I got coffee from Pact
then I forgot to order filters for the Hario, and decided to stop with Pact
I'm not enough of a connoisseur to warrant the expense
but it was nice coffee

Never used Pact, but I hear good things! There's more and more of that style of boutique direct-sourced and single-sourced coffee roasters, and I think it's great. I prefer the coffee-house experience of purchasing freshly-/locally-roasted beans over mail-order, but I go mail-order for some specialty things (like cascara)
Yup, I like the V60 a little more than the Melitta-style filter, but I can't put my finger on it.
@ElendilTheTall Not sure if it fits strictly inside the AeroPress, but this grinder from Hario is a slim one.
I have a similar model.

what does cascara taste like?
this is the one

3:22 PM
@ElendilTheTall What a great question!

but between that and the Aeropress, that's £50 on coffee equipment
i don't know if I care that much
my experience with fruit teas is that they smell fantastic and taste like hot water

@ElendilTheTall And another question on the same topic. :) You should come over to Coffee ;-)

meh... see above comment re. how much I care

Just kidding. Cascara, to me, tastes a bit like rooibos (tea/tisane) if you've had that. It's a mild, dried-berry sort of taste; a little tangy-sour like cranberry, but fruity like currants and red berry-like stuff, maybe like mulberries.
It has a (rather) mild coffee-like smell to it also.

hmmm
I've never had red bush tea
do you have it (cascara) with milk?
are you picking yourself off the floor? are you one of those purists that refuses to taint their beverages with milk and sugar? :D

3:33 PM
I don't, but I hear people take cascara with sugar. Might work with milk.
I'm not so much of a "purist" in the fundamental sense, but I do prefer my coffee straight/black... (and tea, no offense intended ;-)
What I mean is... I prefer black coffee over milk and sugar... because I prefer to drink it that way, not because of any elitist "Thou Shalt Not Drink Adulterated Coffee" or something.
... it's just that black coffee tastes better.
... and should be consumed that way.
;-)
But I'm not going to force you to drink black coffee.
I'll just encourage you to drink black coffee because it's better.
Have I fully put my foot in my mouth yet?

not at all
to each their own
I find black coffee too sour
as for tea
are you sitting down?

@ElendilTheTall ... After that statement, I am now sitting...
:)

Add about 3/4" milk to a mug. Add a teabag. Pour on boiling water. Stir for 3 seconds. Remove teabag. Add half a tsp sugar
I loathe strong tea

@ElendilTheTall Thank you for the warning ;-)

several co-workers over the years have been almost genetically incapable of making such milky tea
as for coffee, I almost always just drink instant these days

3:44 PM
Just kidding, of course. You may want to try other types of tea (or herbal "tea-like" brews), not commonly found in bags: for example, loose oolong tea, or white tea, or rooibos (red bush).

though it is Nescafe Azera. So, really posh. ;)

:)

there's a bag of Ceylon Orange Pekoe at the drinks station, I could give that a try
I have never tried a non-black tea I liked

I like all kinds of coffee and tea. I try not to judge... merely try to convince people to embrace my philosophy...

well, in terms of coffee and tea, I can at least say I have given a go

3:46 PM
... which is to eat/drink half as much of (coffee/tea/cheese/whisky/etc.), that's twice as good, and enjoy it 10x as much.

I like good coffee, just not enough to spend the time and money required to drink it regularly
now cheese I can get behind
though I am stymied by the fact that some strong cheeses trigger migraines
specifically, mature cheddars
which i love

For certain foodstuffs (specifically, cheese, tea, coffee, beer, bread, whisky, etc.) I generally want to regulate my intake... so I buy stuff that's 2x as quality/expense/fancy/etc. and enjoy it.

a sound philosophy if ever there was one

I think so, and it works for me! But not for everyone.
@ElendilTheTall Oh, that's a bugger.

i don't drink, so whiskeys and beers are lost on me, but the idea of 'learning' whiskey does appeal to me

3:49 PM
Interesting; in what sense would you "learn" the whisk[e]y if not for drinking?
(though I also very strongly believe in the "learning" process of foods!)

i mean, if I was going to start drinking, it would probably be something like whisky

(... and drink...)

i wouldn't drink for the sake of getting drunk, I would drink to appreciate a quality product

Ah, understood... and agreed.

however, my non-drinking is deeply rooted and I am as stubborn as a particularly stubborn mule, who has just been made Professor of Pigheadedness at Oxford University, so the chances of my actually doing it are slim to zero
but it's a nice idea
I can sit back and imagine myself in my well-stocked library, lined with leather bound books and rich mahogany, a roaring fire in the hearth, comfortably ensconsed in a wing-back chair and smoking jacket, reading a book and enjoying a good Talisker single malt or whatever

3:53 PM
@ElendilTheTall I wonder what is the cause of the migraine-triggers... perhaps critters from mould- or bacteria-ripening? But that doesn't speak for Cheddar.

@hoc_age tyramine
it is found in many 'aged' foods, like cheese and cured meats
it's also found in dried fruit, chocolate, and nuts
if I eat a lot of those foods over a period of say, a week or two, i will get a migraine
but if I have one mature-Cheddar sandwich, I will get a complete bitch mother of a migraine within 2 hours or so
@cindy hi hon

@ElendilTheTall ... mature cheddar sandwich with aged Dijon mustard, prosciutto, and dried figs... which I would never eat, because I don't care for any of those things.
Wait, sorry if you like all of those things.
/me removes foot from mouth again.

i like Dijon mustard, I can eat prosciutto (I prefer Serrano), and I'm allergic to most fresh fruit

I don't even know if barrel-aged whole-kernel Dijon mustard actually exists. Maybe it's better than the pedestrian stuff.

the latter not dangerously so, it's a side effect of hayfever called oral allergy syndrome. basically, I eat fresh fruit, my mouth itches like the dickens for a couple of hours
@hoc_age I go for grey poupon
good depth of flavour, not too expensive
oddly, cheeses like parmesan which are of course always aged don't have the same effect on me as mature cheddar

3:59 PM
Wacky, all around. :) My guilty-conscience condiment is Ketchup.

i wonder if it's because I previously ate a fair bit of cheddar
Canadian cheddar mmm mmm mmmmmmm

@hoc_age I mostly changed it for the hats.

@hoc_age ketchup is great
no need to feel guilty about that
@hoc_age whereabouts in the world are you, if you don't mind me asking?

@Jefromi Ah yes, I can hardly wait for Winter Bash this year! I should make myself a construction-paper Adventskalender in anticipation...
@ElendilTheTall A bit of a wanderer myself, currently East Coast US. You're UK, I think?
@ElendilTheTall Ketchup is fine, except for the corn-syrup laced swill that one finds too frequently around here.
@ElendilTheTall Back to whisky that I can get behind... :) That's a strikingly common picture you paint... leather-bound books, mahogany, cigar (if you're into that sort of thing), and whisky. I wonder if that actually, literally, was so common as to make the imagery so authentic-sounding..

UK yes. Home of the best whiskey, some might say :)
The image is probably traceable to something specific in pop culture.
As for cigars... Nope. I am boringly free of any substances more illicit than caffeine I'm afraid.

4:16 PM
@ElendilTheTall ... and based on your previous statements about coffee and tea preparation, you scarcely get any caffeine I think!
@ElendilTheTall Well, by law, there's only one source for the best single-malt Scotch whiskys in the world. Or Kentucky bourbon, for that matter. Or Japanese, or Irish, or...

Yes indedd
Indeed
Well, I probably have about 4 or 5 coffees a day
Instant. So probably not much caffeine in the scheme of things. But a detectable amount. And I certainly know when I haven't had any
Otherwise my body is a temple O.O

@ElendilTheTall But I wonder what the pop-culture reference is... hmmm...

Until recently a Buddhist temple with a standard chubby Buddha in it, admittedly. Now it is a somewhat more toned and ascetic Greek temple

@ElendilTheTall Based on your O.o I assume your body is an analogous "temple" as mine is.
or maybe i'm wrong.
BTW: anecdotal evidence on boiling time for water... Glass won!

It is more of a temple these days than it was for sure. I have lost about 35lbs since February.

4:26 PM
@ElendilTheTall Congratulations! Wow, quite a feat. How'd you lose it, if you don't mind me asking.

Interesting. I look forward to reading your findings in Physics
Cutting down on cheese, butter, cream, bread and sugar mainly

@ElendilTheTall A witty quip from the Scientist! ;-)

All diet, very little extra exercise.

@ElendilTheTall Well done! I look forward to your full findings in Healthy Living Magazine... ;-)
I boiled 500g of room-temperature water in glass pot and metal pan of reasonably similar size. I used the same, quite small burner (for at mechanically-enforced "high" gas setting. Glass to rolling boil in 10:40 and metal in 12:20.
gtr; ttyl.

4:43 PM
@hoc_age bye. Nice chatting to you. Do stop by again. I will set up another wing-back by the fire old chap.

5:40 PM
@ElendilTheTall Hey there. Sorry I missed you. You guys were in a conversation and I didn't want to interrupt, so I wandered off.

6:23 PM
@Cindy believe it or not, I am capable of carrying on two concurrent textual conversations. Sometimes even three! ;)

Jay
Motherf******
waited 2.5 hours for tow truck
piece of crap ><
they had originally estimatedd 20 minutes
i called 1 hours in and they said they were 8 blocks away
1.5hr later...
and i didnt realize how expensive rental cars are when you dont reserve it super ahead
cheapest i can find is like ~$50 a day

7:01 PM
Really? In Pittsburgh? You should be able to get better deals than that.
rent-a-wreck (not really wrecks, but well used)

7:28 PM
"there is still at least one more group that faces direct discrimination by the Boy Scouts: atheists"
oh well

7:51 PM
oh well as in 'who cares'?

Jay
@TomW I think oh well as in "we cant have everything. one step at a time"
from what i know of her

Well, it doesn't will affect me, since I'll never be a Boy Scout. Gay rights is kind of a pet issue of mine, so I watch it carefully and I participate in the fight when and where I feel it's appropriate. At this point I feel that (in the US anyway) the gay-rights fight has largely been won.

@TomW @Jolenealaska is an example of that rarest of things: an American atheist

Jay
is that sarcasm?

The Boy Scouts demanding that all members have religion is kind of not very important to me, at least right now.

7:56 PM
@Jay what, my comment?
@Jolenealaska hello you, by the way

Jay
about atheism being rare in us

it's kind of like "In God We Trust" on our dollar bills.

@Jay relatively speaking, it is

@Jay Relatively speaking it is rare.

Jay
hmmm i guess i have a skewed perspective since i live in philadelphia

7:58 PM
And the fundamentalists have a loud voice.

Jay
and a huge population here is atheist

Here, it's almost something that you don't want to say too loud.
@ElendilTheTall Hi sweetie
Because it's come up in conversation, I have told two people at the American Legion that I don't believe in God.

@Jolenealaska I do wonder how much of that is knee-jerk towards that specific word. Would the reaction be any different if you said, for example, "I was raised non-religious"?

One of those people really reacted very strongly.

Now I know they don't mean quite the same thing

8:00 PM
@TomW Well, saying it that way would be untrue.

@Jolenealaska I dunno, over 1/5 of the country is unaffiliated at this point. It's bigger than Catholicism, which people give plenty of attention to.

10% of the US is atheist. compare that to 47% in France, 30% in the Netherlands, and 25% in the UK for example

I used to teach Sunday School and sang in the choir.

unaffiliated != atheist however @jefromi

8:01 PM
@ElendilTheTall I find it quite hard to believe it's that low. I think people tend to say they are, because that's just the done thing

Yes, I know, it includes agnostic and "nothing in particular" which I can only assume means basically the same thing as agnostic in practice.

@ElendilTheTall d'oh, I mean...I am convinced a lot more people than that are atheist

Encompassing at least agnosticism, atheism, deism, secular humanism, and general secularism, Americans without a religious affiliation represent about 20% or more of the population. and since the early 1990s, independent polls have shown their rapid growth. Unaffiliated Americans are sometimes referred to as "Nones". Though having no religion and not seeking religion they have diverse views: 68% believe in God, 12% are atheists, 17% are agnostics; 18% consider themselves religious, 37% consider themselves as spiritual but not religious, and 42% considers themselves as neither spiritual or religious...

I am far more than nonreligious. I actively disbelieve and am almost anti-religion.

@Jolenealaska ok, well it'd make sense for me

8:02 PM
Which makes family get-togethers stressful.

People are definitely really reluctant to explicitly label themselves atheist or anything else they think will come off as nonreligious, since the Christian majority not only exists but has a lot of influence on everyday life.

@Jolenealaska I advise you not to read the comments here then: foxnews.com/us/2015/07/28/…

I read enough
I would not have sued, nor would it have really bothered me, but I would've walked out. If I were penalized for walking out, then I would have pitch a bitch.

> In a statement issued by an attorney, Rankin County Superintendent Lynn Weathersby said that despite the court's ruling, students and teachers will continue to pray.
disingenuous cow

My dad is also an atheist, but he is very non-combative about it.

8:06 PM
pretty sure the court didn't say you couldn't pray

I'm positive they didn't say that!
So dad would go to church with Jeene and with his first wife (my mom) for social networking. I didn't even know he was an atheist until I was 10 or 11.
@ElendilTheTall that map surprises me. Alaska is ranked fairly high at 27% irreligious. I'm guessing that is because native Alaskan traditions may not always be considered religious, although they are somewhat faith-based.
The state maybe 27% irreligious, but the Anchorage Baptist Temple is huge, and Jerry Privo (preacher) is extremely powerful politically. He's vile.
Children knocked on my door yesterday to invite me to a carnival at the Anchorage Baptist Temple. Damn them for sending kids!
Oops Jerry Prevo

Hm. I had one courgette - my first - off my plants a couple of days ago. I've just had another six. At that rate of progression I think the observable universe will be completely full of courgettes before the end of the season

They do that!

And judging by the size of the damn plants that doesn't seem to be an unrealistic possibility
the leaves are dinner plate-sized

"The Anchorage Baptist Temple’s chief pastor, Rev. Jerry Prevo, said he wasn't worried about backlash. The Bible’s message is plain, he said: 'No homosexual will enter the Kingdom of God.' "

8:19 PM
You could at least have filled the universe with a vegetable that didn't taste like wet ass

... I don't think it's backlash from God that they were talking about, but okay.

Here they get so huge that the they are like our pumpkins and cabbage state fair.

@ElendilTheTall they're easy to grow and were in the selection of seeds I scrounged off a friend, sue me
@Jolenealaska yeah, I'm taking the advice of aggressively picking them. This variety is not meant for growing marrows, so they probably wouldn't be that good. Also, the soil is quite dry so that should check their growth somewhat.

@Jefromi He has also said that there is no such thing as a homosexual Christian.
If I saw him crossing a street, I would be very tempted to run him over.
brb

Well, if he thinks his church and others like it are the only real Christian churches, I don't think he really has to worry about gay people trying to join, so... maybe he's not wrong?

8:28 PM
What I find really hard about dealing with him (and I've actually talked to him one-on-one... it made my skin crawl) is imagining a kid growing up in the church, as he (or she) becomes more and more aware that he is gay.

@TomW you'll be hearing from my lawyers

my brother told me something kind of interesting the other day!
The Catholic arm of my family (some of you might have seen me speak of Bill and Patty) have lots (I've lost count) of kids.
Most of you have probably read of the study that show that younger brothers with multiple older brothers have a higher tendency to be gay.
Well, my brother recently spoke to the youngest son. Kevin (my brother) told me that if that kid isn't gay, he would eat his shoes. Last time I was in town I watched the son in a high school play and had dinner with the family the next night.
That was years ago, but my gaydar was tripped.
This is going to be interesting to watch. I hope the kid has some backbone.

Sigh.

@Jefromi ?

It's just all infuriating and depressing.

8:40 PM
Yes. But every day somewhat less so on some fronts.
of course, as soon as you start to feel optimistic, another tragedy strikes

Yeah, I know, I'm generally optimistic.

When people ask me if the glass is half empty of half full, I like to say 'which half?' and watch their face.
Or*
> Most of you have probably read of the study that show that younger brothers with multiple older brothers have a higher tendency to be gay.
A) no one reads studies
B) why would most of us have read that one?
:P

And yet I have heard of that!

But have you read the study?

Nope but she said "read of".

8:55 PM
@Jefromi (after careful editing because I knew that he was going to say that)

Cheater

Well aren't we all smart.

we are, we are

9:07 PM
@TomW A thought for a fantasy short story: Some mix of Wesley Crusher type nerdiness, zucchini, Alaskan-esque climate and tribbles.

0.o
Shut up and take my money

I actually think I am going to try that, I need a break from autobiographical stuff. I haven't actually sat down to write a short story for a very long time and that premise is actually kind of fun to play with.

@Jay If it makes you feel better, I managed to hit two cars in my life. Both times it was broad daylight and the other car was stationary. One of those was in a parking garage.
It's kind of an accomplishment, really.

@FaheemMitha That's how I look at it. One of these days I'll tell the story of the rather spectacular roll that killed forever my all-time favorite car.

9:22 PM
@Jolenealaska roll? You mean it turned over?
Or just went in a circle?

2.5 Revolutions
right into the Alaska Native Medical Center parking lot snow burm.

My other memorable accident was losing control of my car in the fast lane somewhere in VA, going south, in 1996. It went in a complete circle, and ended up facing forward. Black smoke billowed from the tires. I guess cars aren't designed to do a merry-go-round. Neither the car or the tires were ever the same again.

11:50 PM, almost late to work (of course I actually was), driving too fast on the main road, hit a patch of ice in a Geo Tracker.

I was moving from Chicago to NC at the time, so it wasn't the best circumstance in which to have an accident.
@Jolenealaska Going to work at midnight?

I worked the midnight shift most of my working life. Even at NSA and in Korea. Even as a veterinary technician. Even now, I tend to drift to that schedule.

9:28 PM
@Jolenealaska Oh, because you're a night person?

I guess so. As soon as I was out of school I immediately drifted towards lifestyles that meant being up all night and sleeping during the day,

@Jolenealaska I see.
@Cindy Good luck with the job thing.
Well, I should probably try to sleep. Night all.

good night

9:44 PM
@Jay I want to ask you a favor.

10:07 PM
@TomW and everyone else: I Googled "Shut up and take my money" because I never get pop-culture references or internet memes. I wanted to make sure that I was interpreting the line correctly. This was the top Google hit (or at least the first one that I chose to hit): oneplus.net/2
Shut up and take my money

10:37 PM
@TomW in a stream of consciousness kind of way, I ended up here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confit_byaldi Not only does that look like a really good way use up surplus zucchini, but now I want to rewatch the movie. I remember that it was pretty cute.
Shit...The pizza place just sent me another half-price offer one day only.
I still have left over pizza from them!
But their half-price offer is legit.
I can't eat rice and beans that cheaply.

11:11 PM
I need a techno-geek
And a moderator, actually.
