@Jolenealaska When you see spam, please go ahead and flag it as spam, rather than just removing the link. It makes it easier to catch users who're consistently spamming so we can destroy them better.

@Jefromi OK. A few of us were discussing just that a day or two ago, so I'll pass that on.

Thanks! It's hard to cover it with comment replies since not everyone will be able to see them.

Apropos of nothing, do you know of the drama regarding the Science Fiction chat room over the past weeks?

I don't!

High rep users suspended, the whole room frozen, a mod asked to resign... High Drama
I wasn't there but apparently things got ugly.

7:14 AM
Meh, that's sad.
I guess it's easier for that kind of thing to happen in chat than on sites where things are a lot more restricted.

Star Wars fans, Trekkies and Slytherins in the same room. It was bound to happen I suppose.
Apparently political debate and that kind of thing got out of control and not nice.

Ick. Do ping if anything approaching that happens here; I'd rather jump in and suspend a ton of people (high-rep or otherwise) than get to where people say things they can't take back.
Or freeze the room, I guess, as they did.

I find it hard to imagine it happening here. Sometimes people butt heads (you've seen me do it), but others will jump in as referee/peacemaker. That that didn't happen there is one thing that Shog9 brought up as a major problem.

Hum, yeah, I don't really expect it to but if you get unlucky, if it's the wrong subset of people, if someone who'd otherwise help is in a bad mood...
I imagine a lot of the people there were people who were usually reasonable?

Apparently, not so much in chat. It had been an issue for a while. Particularly the high rep users who were suspended.

7:29 AM
Ah, I see. It's certainly true that you don't have to be a nice person to write correct answers and collect votes.

I'm not sure that the mod being asked to resign was a part of all this or whether that was a separate issue.
That particular one was way surprising for me because I voted for him. His answers are awesome and I voted for him because of it.

Looks like there's a meta post about it giving about as much detail as you're likely to see outside CM team: meta.scifi.stackexchange.com/questions/7319/…
Sounds rather like it's an instance of smart/knowledgeable person, good answers, popular content... but maybe not good at all the people-things you have to do as a mod.
And yeah, that's definitely hard to do, especially on smaller sites.
Scifi is substantially bigger than cooking, but still.
In some ways, really high rep users (in particular competitive ones) may tend to not make good moderators? It's hard to wear the moderator hat if you're also out there fighting to answer questions and collect rep and defend your answers as the best ones and so on.

He was also such a fast rising star (128K in less than 2 years? Holy Crap!), he is obviously competitive and obsessive.

Yeah, definitely seems like someone who'll contribute plenty without being a mod.

You can't gain rep that fast otherwise.

7:43 AM
Same way I'm happy having folks like you posting more answers and collecting more rep than me :)

@Jefromi That too.
@Jefromi :)
Stephie could possibly beat me for the year. So I've been sure to step up :)

Glad y'all are getting some challenge!

(not that I'm counting or anything. HA!)

And it's the holiday peak question season too so y'all can have plenty of fun the next month or two!
@Jolenealaska Of course not!

Americans have an advantage during turkey season WooHoo!

7:48 AM
We could probably do a better job at organized turkey FAQ though.

@Jolenealaska As I said, you Americans and the turkey ;-) But honestly, even 2nd for my first full year would be way more than what I went for when I started here ;-)
And good morning!

Though that doesn't add a whole ton of value to the internet, I suppose, there's some pretty good pages already for things like "how do I thaw".

@Stephie You sound like me :)

Good morning!

@Jolenealaska And yet here I am, answering at least one turkey question ;-)
But don't let me interrupt. Parenting SE has seen some mild controversy about how mods handeled edits, too.

7:53 AM
@Stephie Far as I'm concerned, as long as you're in the top few you're doing some pretty awesome stuff. There's a bit of luck of the draw anyway, managing to answer the most popular questions.

@Stephie Really? I'll be sure to nitpick it. :)

@Stephie Don't worry, I don't have a whole ton to say about any of the dramatic stuff, I wasn't there.

Or getting a gazillion upvotes on what felt like a trivial question: Powderd sugar, anyone?

I broke my losing streak with this one:
21
A: Are Pyrex casserole dishes safe for use on electric stovetops?

JolenealaskaNO! It would not. They will break, possibly violently. Unless they are labeled for that use, don't do it.

Sometimes there is just no sense to it.

@Stephie I said popular, not meaningful :) Click magnets are a thing.

7:56 AM
@Jolenealaska As in "read the label"?

There ought to be a badge for more upvotes than words.

Good idea! Would also serve to discourage some very long-winded answers.

It annoyed SAJ something fierce.

What did?

We answered the pyrex question simultaneously. I won.

7:59 AM
The way I see it, reputation via voting is obviously an imperfect unfair system, but making it significantly more fair would be a huge pain so it's not so bad :)

With almost exactly the same answer.

If that happens to me, I think "Great mind think alike!" andmake sure to upvote the other answer.

Sportsmanship badge!
Wish more people had that one.

Cindy's ketchup answer had her a bit dazed.
wow...only 7 sportsmanship badges. That surprises me.

@Stephie I think the real thing to watch out for is when the answers aren't exactly the same, so it's really tempting to think "oh, mine's better because of X, I don't want to upvote theirs, then if they don't upvote mine, theirs will end up on top, and that's not right."
@Jolenealaska It does require you to have answered a pretty large number of questions, so that's part of it.
I guess theoretically you could upvote a lot of competing answers per question, but I think it's pretty common for there to only be one other answer or even none.

8:07 AM
As I have only 148 own answers, I'll have to work a bit for that badge...

120
Q: Gold Sportsmanship badge

Mr.WizardI propose a new Gold level Sportsmanship badge. I earned the silver badge June 4th, and I continue to vote for competing answers. I would like to feel that I am working toward something, not because I would otherwise cease to vote for these answers, which clearly I have not, but because it adds...

Might help if there were a bronze one too.
Anyway, late here, see y'all around!

I've answered quite a few older questions, even questions with highly upvoted, accepted answers. Not that it matters, but do upvotes for another answer count if you vote while your answer is at 0 (assuming that it becomes positive later)?
CYA Jef.
@Stephie That illustrates a very high average. I love the cat/rabbit answer.

But that was one of these "once in a very long time" questions. I think it says a lot that this actually has a more upvotes for the question than for the answers. In this case the credit goes to Chef_code.
As for the average: What is "high"? Mine is around 63, but because of the rabbit/cat one.
And yours is 52, that's not much of a difference.
Tall has 57.
If you want high, that would be Aaronut: 104!
Sorry, did I bore you?

8:32 AM
@Stephie No! I was putting food away.
Mine is skewed by avacados.

As in browning, I know.

That and asking a lot of questions.

Why wouldn't questions count? They do contribute to the site.
But enough maths for one morning - how's the pooch?

He is being quite charming lately.

Oh?

8:38 AM
Yep.
He is still not trustworthy with strangers, but we have a plan for that. He stops barking when I tell him to, and his basic obedience is pretty darn good.
He's trying to crawl into my lap as I type this. I think he's trying to tell me that I need to take him out.

Is it that he might have been a bit bored before? So now he has orders, knows his position in the pack and all's well again?
So take him...! I have to go, too. ("leave", not "bathroom")
Take care!

The position in the pack thing, definitely. CYA soon, Steph!

Well, I was watching a Red Dwarf quiz show, then took a nap and dreamed I met the Red Dwarf cast. Let's hear it for positive dreams!

I'm adding my creative input.
